Yeah, water weight can mask weight loss or make it appear that you gained or maintained weight. I'm especially prone to water retention, so I know that when the scale goes up and I feel puffy, it's water. Then 2 or 3 weeks later it balances out. My little trick is to stay low on sodium (1500mg or less) for a few days and eat plenty of fiber. Overdrinking water with a high sodium intake can make it worse.

| Weight Loss | what have you found to be most effective? | Sep 29 2008 10:41 (UTC) |
|
| - Calorie cycling - Not eating too much less - Eating at or close to my goal weight's maintenance calories - Strength training and HIIT (intervals) - Eating wholesome foods most of the time - Taking "free days" - Striving for balance, not perfection - Not depriving myself; enjoying all the foods I like - Only eating things I like and nothing that I don't like |

| I'm in the same exact boat! I've been overweight my whole entire life; I've never been close to thin. It's very scary to get to lower weights that I have been in my adult life. I don't know how I will look OR feel when I get there. It's fun though!!
But scary, very scary. All I know is how to be "fat". |

| Weight Loss | Staying on track 6 days a week at least | Jun 15 2008 21:21 (UTC) |

I take "free days" at least 2 or 4 times a month to eat anything I want, as much as I want without counting. As long as I'm on track 80-90% of the time, that's fine, it all balances out and hasn't stopped me from losing 95+ lbs since last year. |

| Weight Loss | could working out too hard hinder weight loss? | Apr 11 2008 22:12 (UTC) |

If you aren't eating enough to fuel your activity level then you can slow down your metabolism (plateau) from your metabolism reaching equilibrium with your intake/expenditure. Use this calculator: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ and multiply it by your activity level: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ harris-benedict-equation/

I've done it before. I call it a "Grazing Day" on my menu. It's fun once in awhile and it doesn't matter what order you eat your food in or on a certain schedule. It works just the same. I like seeing how much I can cram into a menu when I do it. It's fun. In fact I might do that sometime soon for a change! |

I plan a "free day" every 2 weeks, on holidays, special occasions, vacations or whenever I just feel like it, but I usually stick to once every 2 weeks. I have taken them since day 1 and they haven't stopped me from losing 89 lbs since last June. |

| Weight Loss | Starvation Mode Rant | Apr 07 2008 20:43 (UTC) |
48 |
Is "starvation mode" thrown around pre-maturely, often without enough information? Absolutely!
People under extreme starvation circumstances, like Anorexics, Holocaust victims, stranded in the desert, etc. lose weight when they body has no choice but to use what it has. Absolutely. But slightly under-eating for one's weight/height/age/activity level is NOT the same thing as starvation and "starvation mode" is not a permanent condition; you cannot "break" your metabolism. A lot of people unwittingly overestimate their exercise and/or underestimate their caloric intake and portions, but there are many others that have no idea that they COULD BE under-eating when they believe they are doing everything properly. After all, it's been drilled into our heads for years that you have to eat less to lose weight. But how much less? Well, that's an individual formula that only you can find to be useful. Telling someone to "eat more" when they are believed to be in starvation mode isn't a suggestion to go to McDonald's and order the biggest value meal they have. It's simply sound advice to eat ENOUGH to fuel one's body and mind. Under-eating, whether intentional or not, can be just as bad for one's health as overeating and while the Internet has sensationalized "starvation mode" and makes people panic over the latest fad, it's a real condition that is just simply misunderstood because of the name it was given. |

Hey guys! My current weight is: 236.8 lbs I took a few weeks off in March to eat anything I wanted while we moved and traveled. I had a good time, but of course I gained weight. Mainly water! I shot up to 244 lbs within 10 days, but I've been back on track since last Wednesday and I'm already down to 236.8 lbs this morning. I was down to 234 lbs about 10-14 days ago. No worries though. I feel that a break from counting calories and the ordinary is good every few months or so. I don't regret any of it and WILL do it again in the future. |

BMR calculators and calorie estimates are just guidelines but they are usually pretty accurate unless you have metabolic issues and/or underlying medical condition(s). Check out: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ Calculate your BMR, then go to: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ harris-benedict-equation/ And multiply your BMR by your activity level. If you have been under-eating, you'll probably gain weight initially. It's normal, don't worry because it will even out within 2-6 weeks. Just be patient. Under-eating slows down your metabolism and deprives your body of nutrients, don't be afraid to fuel your body, you'll get better results and overall health. |

| Weight Loss | Finally Losing Eating BMR+? | Mar 07 2008 06:55 (UTC) |

Keep in mind, BMR means if you just lie in bed all day doing NOTHING and does NOT account for regular daily activities (NEAT) and planned exercise/strength training. Your BMR is the bare minimum your body needs just to sleep all day; breathing, blood flowing, etc. I have eaten an average of 2057-2121 calories per day and have lost 80+ lbs since last June. I believe in eating at or close to your goal weight's maintenance calories, INCLUDING your activity level and eventually you will arrive there. I follow the Harris Benedict Equation: www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ harris-benedict-equation/ |

| Weight Loss | Help with p.m snacking please | Mar 07 2008 06:45 (UTC) |

I plan 2 snacks/mini meals after dinner because I am usually hungry. So I eat every 2 to 3 hours, 3 meals and 4 snacks: Breakfast Snack 1 Lunch Snack 2 Dinner Snack 3 Snack 4 As long as you're within your calorie range for the day/week it doesn't matter when you eat; day or night. |

| Weight Loss | My BMR is too high to eat so many calories.....HELP!!! | Mar 07 2008 06:41 (UTC) |

That's NOT a lot of REAL food. Skip diet foods and light versions of foods and you can EASILY get it all in. I eat 7 times a day, every 2 to 3 hours:
Breakfast Snack 1 Lunch Snack 2 Dinner Snack 3 Snack 4 I've lost 80+ lbs since last June eating an average of 2057 to 2121 calories per day, plus exercise in the recent months. You should eat as much as you can while creating a deficit so that you keep your metabolism burning HOT. If you under-eat, it will slow down your metabolism and make it harder to lose weight. Keep this in mind and try to eat a lot of real foods, like: whole grains, lean meat/fish, fruit, veggies, dairy products and good fats like nuts and olive oil. See my diet blog at www.j3nn.net for my daily menus. |

| I believe it's good to take a break from ordinary diet and exercise every 3 to 6 months and give your body and mind a vacation. Enjoy yourself and pick right back up where you left off. Strive for balance, not perfection. What you eat in one day or even one week doesn't matter nearly as much as what you're eating and doing the majority of the time. Aim for 90/10 and 80/20 healthy to relaxed approach. | |||

| Denial and diet obsession. That and eating too many "diet foods" instead of REAL food. I gave up "diet foods" 8 months ago and never went back. You can eat a LOT of volume with frozen meals and 100 cal packs but get little to no real nutrition. | |||

I've been using my digital food scale that I bought from Walmart for $30 last year, it works great and I'm still losing. I would check it once in awhile for accuracy though, but other than that, I think a lot of people plateau from not eating enough. Seems to be the common factor in a lot of people that get close to their goal. Their metabolism tends to reach equilibrium with itself. Digital food scale is the best diet tool ever though! |

| Weight Loss | How do you truly target BMR/calorie count? | Mar 07 2008 03:04 (UTC) |
|
BMR calculations are just an estimate but they are pretty close to accurate for most people but they do not take into account lean body mass (muscle, bones, etc.) I like the Harris Benedict Equation: You find your BMR: Then multiply it with your activity level: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ harris-benedict-equation/ Then to lose weight your eat less and/or exercise to create that deficit. It'sbeen working very well for me. I believe that people should eat at their goal weight's maintenance calories including their BMR and activity level and eventually they will arrive there. I've lost over 80 lbs eating an average of 2057-2121 calories per day. I calorie cycle and I've had great success with it. Unless you are very short/elderly, have underlying medical condition, and/or very inactive, 1000-1200 calories per day is NOT a lot of food for an average adult. 1200 calories per day is barely enough for an inactive 5 year old. You need to give your body enough of what it needs to lose weight. |

| I take a "free day" every 2 weeks or on holidays/special occasions to eat anything I want, as much as I want (upwards of 4000-6000 calories) and get back on track the next day. They haven't held me back from losing over 80 lbs since last June. I also calorie cycle, so it all balances out. | |||
