Maintaining Did I just eat an entire box of cereal? Why yes. Yes I did. Nov 24 2009

Well according to CC, at a moderate activity level, I should eat 1,925 to maintain, and have a healthy BMI of 20. I don't understand why people keep insisting that I gain weight. :/

Well actually I think the cause of my "binge" was more emotional than nutritional.

My dad is in Pakistan visiting his sketchy e-girlfriend and he sent me a message about how the daily bombings weren't all that close to where he was staying. On top of that, my mom's boyfriend has stage 4 colon cancer and they just found out his chemo didn't do anything (the doctor's think he may have only another month or two to live). I also suffer from chronic depression and anxiety.

Like I said, I'm trying to work my way up to higher calories, but I want to take it slow so my weight doesn't go up. (I ate 1800 calories yesterday and probably will for the next 2-3 days and then bump it up to 2000 and see how that works out). I eat a very healthy diet, with alot of fiber and protein and try to limit sugar to little indulgences.

Based on the results I've gotten through my attempts to lose weight, I really don't see any problem with my calorie plan. Like I said, I'm just trying to be careful. My metabolism is a bit slower than it used to be because of the medication I'm taking.

... but the point of maintenance is not to gain weight. I think you'd be hard pressed to find somebody who is 100% confident with their maintanance calories from the get go. Nobody wants to end up back where they started.

My stats= age 22, height 5'3, weight: 112-11, small frame

I'm pretty active (usually 20 minutes of intense cardio.. either on treadmill or elliptical) and I usually walk 2-3 miles a day in addition to that. I also strength train every other day.

I'm kind of afraid to go as high as 2000 calories just because it seems like such a big deal and I'm a little person so right now I'm starting around 1500-1600 calories and working my way up (I had been eating 1200-1300 before).

Fitness RUNNERS--what do you think of when you're running? Nov 05 2009

Well instead of telling myself I only have 30 minutes, I think of it in smaller terms. While I might end up running for 30 minutes, I say to myself "ok, 5 more minutes and then you can slow down" ... then if I've made it those 5 minutes, why not 5 more? Eventually I just get to the point where I'm having a good time running (endorphins and what not) and don't have to think about it anymore.

Hahah nice! Yeah I'm on the college student/broke diet. Mostly live off of beef ramen, frozen veggies, oatmeal, and eggs. It's nice too cause it also makes you more of a lightweight so you don't have to spend as much on drinks to get drunk :P

Beadlady- I really don't believe that it's almost impossible to lose weight when on antidepressants. I've been on Zoloft since feb. and have since lost 10 lbs. I think it goes back to what you were saying about attitude (which I do agree with) since most people fear that they are going to gain weight/not lose any on antidepressants, it changes their attitude.

x1elektrik_reighbeau1x- First off, I'd like to say that I really admire your strength. Having been through all of that and maintaining your hope is really inspirational, especially in these times. That said, since you've demonstrated that you are a strong person, I know that in time, you will lose the weight. As far as making it happen though, if I were you, I'd order some Tae Bo or kickboxing dvds... An hour of those generally burns like 500ish calories or more, plus it tones just about every part of your body (and it also doesn't hurt that it is a means of self defense in a sketchy neighborhood). Meat is expensive. So I'd stay away from that unless presented with it.. somebody before suggested beans and I'd have to agree that they're probably the best choice for fiber and protein. One final note, drink lots of water. It does wonders!

They're probably just intimidated by the fact that you are trying to get healthy and they aren't. When you order something fatty, it makes them feel better about themselves.

One more thing-What I fear the most is ss harming my baby Shih-Tzu. I have seen him kick the dog out of his way, as well as toss him on the couch. Dommie is like a son to me-one I could never have. It pains me to think about what's he's doing to my dog. He just lost his Shepherd of 16 years and I think he resents the fact that I received my puppy from my husband for Valentine's Day. We just also lost our family cat, as some of you may know. And he gets SO upset because he has to keep my kitty from going outdoors-she's always been an indoor cat.

Ok that's it. I knew he was wrong doing all of that other stuff, but kicking dogs?!? Why would anybody do that? I've had 4 dogs die in my life and never once upon seeing another dog since was I compelled to kick it. That's messed up. I really don't think I can give you any advice... how do you reason with dog kickers?

... sorry but puppy cruelty really strikes a nerve with me and I couldn't not say something. I do think you need to talk to your husband though. Your SS would more likely listen to him (blood does run thicker than water..)

Also, the mocking disabled people bit is most likely a coping mechanism. Sometimes, things are so upsetting that the only thing you can do is laugh to keep from crying.

It's tough to give advice when I haven't been there and seen the whole situation (plus I was a really sweet kid :P)... but I'll do my best.

One thing that I do believe is true is that you have to do what you can to try to respect, understand, and love him regardless of his flaws (I know he isn't your true child, but when you got married, the kid was part of the deal). Having been through my fair share of traumatic events when I was a teen, I think a big part of his problem is that he feels that having endured his mother's death (as well as the drama that preceeded it) makes him an adult. It's probable that he thinks he has to prove himself by being defiant. The sex and the drugs bit is fairly typical of teens these days I should think, but it was wrong of him to go against your rules.

My advice? Confuse him a little. Don't let him get you worked up (or at least don't show it). Show interest in his life (if you really wanted to change his perspective you could always light up with him... but that's a bit of a radical suggestion. Just throwing it out there). Calling him a loser (even if it may be true) is only going to exacerbate the problem. Best thing I can say is that you have to be patient. Even if he's approaching legal adulthood, that doesn't mean he's anywhere close to being grown up (Hell, I'm 22 and I still don't think I'm quite there yet).

Young Calorie Counters How to tell a guy you don't like him.....gently! Sep 10 2009

Well...

When I was in high school, I made the mistake of rejecting a guy by saying "well. the truth of the matter is that I just don't really like you at all, and that's why I don't want to go to prom with you anymore."

... I wouldn't really reccommend that because it's mean, although looking back now it's also fairly hilarious. Maybe it'd be best if you just started talking about some guy (fictional or real) that you're really into. If I were you, I'd try to refrain from just flat out asking if he likes you, because either way, that will be a really awkward and embarrasing conversation for both of you.

Original Post by trustwomen:

It is a self-esteem thing. A woman who feels deep down that she is a loser will automatically believe that any guy who is interested in her is obviously a loser too, whereas a guy who doesn't like her is "one of the cool ones". This is factually incorrect, of course.

Work on liking yourself more, and thinking more highly of yourself. Therapists can indeed help you break the negative patterns that you have developed.

That's actually pretty enlightening. I've seen a therapist a few times, but that hasn't really helped much.  I do sometimes feel that when a guy does like me, it's simply because he doesn't know me well enough and when he does, he'll leave for somebody more "normal"

I don't care if somebody is fat or not, but I don't think somebody should be proud of their unhealthy lifestyle. It's not like I go around and proudly flaunt the fact that I'm a smoker. But I have an addiction (not unlike a fat person with a food addiction). Spme people smoke with me, some people don't care that I do it, some people hate that I'm doing it to my health, and some people are just disgusted by it. I think that's fairly analogous to the fat/ana pride argument.

I really don't think my eating disorder was provoked by the fashion industry at all. I know it's different for everybody. I think images of obese people were more of a trigger than fashion ads.

Health & Support Occasional "starvation" day ? Aug 22 2009
20:59 (UTC)

Rather than planning to starve, why not just listen to your body? There will be days when you're not as hungry as others. Sometimes you're gonna be hungrier. If you pay attention to your hunger, generally the calories are going to balance out (unless you have an eating disorder, are actually tired, or dehydrated, important factors to take into account :P)

I think eating disorders can only be understood by those who have experience them. Most people with any sort of eating disorder, whether it be anorexia nervosa, bulimia, or binge eating disorder, are engaging in these activities because or low self esteem; they are intentionally destroying themselves out of self hatred. This is the reason why anorexic people are the most likely to actually follow through with suicide attempts. They just don't want to exist anymore. They want to wither away to nothingness. Overeaters aren't any better or worse: They ignore their true feelings and eat to compensate for that. They essentially are the same problem dealt with in a similar way actually, because both use food to deal with their emotions. Therefore, I don't think anybody should glorify being underweight or overweight. Everybody should strive to have healthy, happy lives.

Weight Loss The fear of going back to your old ways... Aug 22 2009

Well said, gi-jane! For a year or so, I had restricted myself to 1200-1300 calories a day, monitoring exact percentages of fat/proteins/carbs and making sure I didn't eat anything fried or sugary while working out an hour a day, 5 days a week. Strangely enough, I didn't end up really losing weight during this period because I'd end up overeating the healthy foods that I didn't really enjoy and I was absolutely miserable. Now, I've been much more relaxed with my diet, eating foods that I like when I feel like it, but not forcing foods when I'm not hungry. I walk out of necessity (I live in a city) and have been losing weight naturally without even trying.

What I don't understand is why everybody is attacking drinking as though they've never gone through a phase in their life where they drank heavily. As the poster, I'm not advocating heavy drinking/alcoholism or anything like that, I'm simply pointing out that a significant amount of people do drink for enjoyment and that there's nothing wrong with that. There are definitely worse things that they could engage in. Furthermore, it's no different than anybody posting that they like to have fried foods occasionally so long as it fits into their allotment of calories for the day and people support them all the time because you shouldn't restrict yourself from the things that you really like. It may not always be the healthy choice, but life's too short not to enjoy every minute.

well somebody (who isn't anorexic) could want a 100 calorie "meal" in the event that they have just eaten a HUGE meal earlier that day, bringing them close to their limit, but are hungry and want to eat something satisfying that fills them up without going over their limit. I don't think it's worth attacking the poster for calling it a meal... that said,

shirataki noodles with soy sauce

fat free ballpark hot dogs with a calorie-reduced bun

wasa crispbread with melted shredded lowfat cheese and a few slices of pepperoni for a pizza substitute

fruit salad
