Foods Help me guesstimate Edamame! Apr 29 2009

my guesstimate would be 15 beans = 1/2 cup.  1/2 cup = 100 calories.  it's probably about 200 calories.  mmm, edamame.

my suggestion for tracking water consumption: use a large water bottle ~ you can even find one that holds 128 ounces.  i freeze mine the night before, then drink the entire bottle through out the day as it melts.  this is the best way i've found to get all of my water in without having to actually log it.

good luck.

thanks for the reply, tammy - i appreciate you taking the time.  you bring to light a good point: ihave to get better about my diet in general.  i could certainly increase my protein intake to see if that stabilizes my mood some.

Foods I hate mayonnaise...any other ideas for tuna? Aug 24 2008

i like spicy thai chili tuna:

mix thai chili flakes, chinese chili paste, ketchup, sesame oil, a dash of soy sauce, finely chopped garlic & onion.  add to drained tuna.

bumble bee makes a packaged one that's good but high in sodium.

Weight Loss Hypothryroidism or just crazy Aug 23 2008
14:01 (UTC)
32

hey oink.  sorry you're going through this.

an endocrinologist is the place to start.  s/he'll look at your thyroid panel.

i take synthroid for hypothyroid (hashimotos' thyroiditis) & it hasn't made me gain weight.  in fact, synthroid (generic: levothyroxine) helps increase your metabolism to bring it back to the normal level, so you shouldn't gain weight on it.

that said, your body may be holding on to calories if your daily intake is as low as 800 calories (especially because the calories you burn in a day would be relatively high since you exercise vigorously 5 times/week.  it seems counter-intuitive, but try eating more calories on a consistent basis.

best wishes.

i bought a medela electric double.  i suggest you spend $ on a decent electric double pump now and you'll save $ in the long run because you won't have to buy (as much) formula.  you can get a decent one under $300.  it really is worth it.

Foods black bean soup Aug 07 2008
02:56 (UTC)

my copy of a copycat black bean soup (panera bread): 1 onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 celery ribs, finely chopped
1/4 large red bell pepper, finely chopped
2 small chicken bouillon cubes (use vegetable stock for vegetarian)
1 to 1 1/2 cup boiling water
2 cans black beans, undrained
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cumin
1/2 lemon, juice of
1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch

in a pot, combine the first six ingredients; simmer for 10 minutes.

add half a can of beans, salt and cumin; cook for 5 minutes. puree soup (use an immersion blender which makes it easy to do it right in the pot).  add the rest of the beans to the soup.

combine the cornstarch with 1 1/2 tablespoons of water.  add the lemon and the cornstarch to the soup; cook until thickened.

that is super creepy.  if she does it again, ask her why she's staring at you.  perhaps she'll be honest: "i think you're cute...  i want to learn how to use that machine better...  i'm a freak with psychotic tendancies...."  then, tell her it's creepin' you out & ask her to stop.

Original Post by theswissmiss:

Whyyyyy do they call it "losing" weight. Losing implies that you might find it some day, wandering all alone, and it might magically reattach to my hips.

i don't lose it - i misplace it.  it eventually finds my hips & reunites after a short hiatus.  lately it's been expanding it's territory.

Foods The next apple you eat Jun 07 2008

found this answer after experiencing the same issue:

"the reason eating apples makes you hungrier is because they have a high glycemic index. that means that the blood sugar concentration following an apple consumption is going to be a sharp spike up and then down. and then your body is going to go "wah! I was full five minutes ago, but now I am hungry again. feed me!". carrots are even worse in that regard - they are great, healthy snacks, but eating them to relieve hunger just won't work. both of these are best eaten as a snack some time before a larger meal. grapefruit, on the other hand, has a GI of 25 (vis-a-vis apples' 38, or carrots' 47). No wonder it leaves you feeling full before bedtime - the blood sugar release will be much more gradual, over a longer period of time. other low-GI fruits and veggies include cherries (22), peaches (28) and bean sprouts (25)."

cheerio friends.  it's been a while since my last post.  congrats to all of you for your accomplishments...

date: march 30th.  173 lbs. total weight loss for challenge: -4 lbs.

i'm happy with that.  since we had the house fire, i was certain i'd go straight back up the scale roller coaster.  food has always served as a comfort for me.  i work on that daily...

happy thoughts and good vibes to all of you.

lata.

well, we had a house fire on saturday - everyone is OK.  that's a good enough reason to miss a weigh-in, right?!?  also, the scale burned up (seriously). and the food.  Cry

seriously, everyone is ok which is the main thing.  i may not make it on-line as often though.  i'll try to jump on while at work or at the library.

weight = 172.  I think that's down 14 pounds from my Jan. 1 weight.

keep on keepin' on!!!

my latest favorite: vitamuffins.  bluebran = 100 calories, 0 fat, high in fiber, etc.  yummo-lishious.

i'm feeling really good.  i'm learning about moderation.  i'm changing how i view food.  i'm laughing and having fun along the way.

snow, one of your posts inspired me to achieve goals 10 pounds at a time.  i even changed my goal on C-C to 170 instead of 135.  i'm 4 pounds away from  my goal now rather than 39 pounds.  then i'll ajust my goal to 160 - you get the idea.  10 pound short-term goals are much more achievable and motivating for me.

how's everyone else doing?

congrats on the -4 pounds!  don't worry about the +1 pound gain ~ quite frankly, there's no better reason than a birthday party to gain a pound!!!  Laughing  besides, it's probably H20 weight.  up the water, back to calorie-counting & that birthday cake's gone!!!

welcome, frat.  i understand where you're at right now, i started at 186 (@ 5'2").  dat's a lotta weight stuffed in this li'l frame.  think of it this way - that's the highest you'll ever be from this point on.  start now.  the number will come down.

well, my friends, i suck.  there, i said it.

i miss this group - we started out strong, then i fell off the face of the earth.  i've since landed.  all 173 pounds of me landed firmly on the ground.

anyhoo, i'm back.  i'm determined.  coach & tree - i've seen you about on the boards - you're doing AWESOME.  (much deserved pat on the back.)

since we last spoke, i gained 8 additional pounds... i've lost 10 since re-committing to this lifestyle change.  no fads, no crash-diets.  simply a commitment to change.

can someone PLEASE stop this roller coaster?!?

i hope all is well with the rest of you.

yea for you guys, and yea for me!!  i'm at 173 this a.m. - down from my sw of 186 in january - woot woot!  13 pounds ~ dat's a lotta fat!!!

i planned better this week (knew i was going out last night, so ate reasonably, small meals during the day so i didn't go way over my calorie allotment).  i've been better about my water this week too.

you guys have been extremely helpful with ideas, encouragement, and the occasional kick-in-the-ars, if necessary... keep it up!

btw, i'm in love with LUNA bars.  i heart them.  i usually eat one for breakfast with fresh fruit & glass of skim milk.  it easily keeps me full through to lunch.  :::end commercial:::

have a great week.  thanks to all of you for your support.  i echo what iam7 says - this is really working for me.  (thanks again to xqohx for arranging - if you'd like us to rotate who is responsible for the weight updates, i'd be willing to help.  maybe you could make your original thread say the members' names with their original weight - & we could take turns doing a weekly post with updates.  it's up to you - i just don't want all of the responsibility to be yours - unless you want it.)  Smile

welcome back, WW - we missed you.

snow & twin - my weight did come back down after my weekend of eating poorly & drinking richly!  (i did have fun though.)

i have to figure out how to enjoy the foods/drinks that i love, but do so in  moderation.  anyone got that figured out yet?!?
