| Katie, I agree with Sun that your second period of Phase 1 might not result in as big a weight drop as the first period. I'd also be concerned about going that low on carbs again for a full two weeks. I've read that we need a minimum of about 130 grams of carbs each day so that our bodies don't start eating our muscles. Maybe a few days of Phase 1 just to get back in the groove then move to week one of Phase 2 (page 250 of "Supercharged") to be sure you're not depriving yourself of needed nutrients. I also love Agatson's attitude to diet slip-ups...they're going to happen so just smile and get back on track ASAP. My weight loss has stalled so I'll be easing back on carbs, too. Good luck! |

Hi all, I have some questions about other people's responses to SB. I was only able to stay on Phase 1 for one week...I felt too tired to go on longer and was seriously craving fruit. I added back two fruits and two carbs per day and began to feel better. My weight shot up but was back within a week to where it had been on the last day of Phase 1. I'm feeling good and not craving sweets very much but now I think my hair is falling out! Could this be signs of a carb deficit? My fingernails are strong and growing well so I think I must be reasonably healthy. My hair is thin and fine anyway so losing any of it is serious. Sun 123, the photos with LN are terrific. You are very lucky to have met him. I've been a Trekker since the original series first aired in 1966. I'd watch the show on my grandmother's color set and she got a kick out of the fact that she seemd to have bought a color set just so I could follow a show about a green man! Those were the days...my best friend and I in class Thursday afternoons counting the hours until the show aired...sweet memories. |

| Karen, check out the new book "South Beach Diet Supercharged". The expanded food list includes beans and pulses, soy-based meat subs, and lots of nuts and seeds. It would be easy to do an ovo-lacto version of SB in all phases. I think is would be a bit of a challenge to do vegan in phase 1, but not impossible, and certainly not after phase 1. Good luck! |

| Hello Ranters, I've missed you all. I got discouraged with weight loss on Weight Watchers and gave up for a while. I'm now on South Beach (day 6 of phase 1 and I've lost 4+ pounds so far). I've also learned that I need help to stay focused and motivated! My rant regards Weight Watchers...I just can't stick with it because I get hungry and I hate being hungry. I re-read my South Beach book and decided it is essentially WW with better science. It also doesn't require that I obsess about writing down everything I eat. I was up to 5 columns of analysis in my food log...I'd decided I needed to know not only the points but also the fat grams, grams of protein, grams of fiber and the calories. Too much! I hope SB keeps on working for me because it is certainly much less stressful. Molly, I am so glad your DH is safely back. Even 100 degree weather in Fresno has got to be a relief to him. I'm sorry it is so hard on you and your asthma. It is hot here in North Florida (and muggy). I try to think of it as folks up north probably think of their winter...a season for generally staying indoors. We are repairing part of our deck and find we can only work on it early in the mornings and only then for an hour or so because it gets so very hot. As for the garden I have some herbs, grape tomatoes and chard...it is much too hot for anything else. The good news is that I'll get to plant lettuce in October! The bad news is we don't have any great vacations planned. Hawaii, Las Vegas, St. Maartens all sound lovely. Jane |

Shia, Molly's right. If you eat too little you'll set yourself up to be over-hungry later. Get back on track. Sticking with your usual, planned calories will put you back in control. Yes, you've gone over a bit...but not enough to panic about. If you feel you need to do "penance" over the binge then drink extra water! The extra water will fill you up and help flush out toxins. Good luck, Jane :-) |

Starbucks - the rant!!! What a diet buster! DH and I were running late Saturday AM and stopped at Starbucks for a quick breakfast on the go. Their muffins are huge and I don't even want to think about the fat and calories. I tried to get something that sounded healthy but it still tasted more like cake than muffin. Thank goodness we were headed to an art festival which included lots of walking and where I was able to get a healthy salad lunch. Still...does their delicious-looking stuff have to be soooo fattening? The anti-rant...DH had a pumpkin-cheesecake muffin at Starbucks. It was, of course, oversized with a dollop of cheesecake filling baked into it. He said it was good and asked me how they did the filling bit. I explained my theory and also that I have a recipe for a cheesecake brownie that could be adapted to a muffin. He said he'd like it if I made it the way I usually bake things. He meant he wanted me to "healthify" the recipe as I usually do by reducing the fat and sugar, replacing the white flour with whole wheat and adding either flax meal or wheat bran! He noticed that I try to make things healthier and he prefers the lighter tastes! That made me feel really proud and happy. Jane |

kiwiviv, if it works for you that's great. I googled the diet yesterday and read several reviews the most thoughtful of which concluded it is a decent plan as long as you stick with it. The problem arises when you go off the diet, even for the 3 recommended days. If it helps you lose weight and get motivated to follow a healthier eating plan in future that will be great. I understand how motiviating quick results can be. Just be careful to transition into a sustainable eating plan ASAP. Good luck, Jane |

Original Post by mollymouser: Molly, If you posted the USWID I missed it...what was it? In your favor, I hope! We saw our old friends this weekend. They've both also gained weight so I fretted for nothing...as often as that happens you'd think I'd have learned to stop fretting by now! We had a lovely visit. I say "Happy Veterans' Day" to Ron and all our brave current and former military folk. My life has been blessed by my father, a WWII and Berlin Airlift vet, and my BIL, a Vietnam vet. My brother served in peacetime. I also pray that all our people are out of Iraq and back home ASAP. Jane |

Dear Shia, I'm glad you found what you needed to satisfy the cravings. I agree that you should ignore negative people/comments. Pompey's idea is a good one. I know don't feel right if I don't start off the day with lots of protein and complex carbs. As Sun123, noted carbs get some people off to a bad start while others do OK with complex carbs. I also think your idea of eating smaller meals more frequently will help especially including, as Molly suggested, protein and fiber. It really does sound like a blood sugar thing to me. Best of luck, kiddo! Jane :-) |

Hi michellesf I love your photo. I've always wanted to see Ayer's Rock! I think a sushi restaurant would be a great choice for healthy eating, avoiding the sake and those rolls that have been sabotaged with avocado, mayonnaise and/or cream cheese! Vietnamese and Thai are also usually good choices for dishes with lots of veg and little fat. In San Francisco you are really spoiled for choice though, aren't you? Molly, you will taunt me with tales of the wonders of your local Whole Foods! I am so jealous! At least, I'll be able to visit my fave WF in Atlanta at Thanksgiving. I saw that Tesco has opened some shops in the LA area that are described as "Ralph's meets Trader Joe's"...they sound marvelous. Oh well, here in Florida we have Publix which is a really great store, too. Jane :-)

Sue, your advice to silveraynebow is great. I've heard of HALT but this one: Remember "If hunger is not the problem, food is not the answer!"reply to silveraynbow is wonderful. is new to me. I'm going to write both phrases out and post them on the fridge. I may even embroider them to help myself remember. Thanks, Jane |

Megan, I, too, am going to try the "just admit the truth" strategy. It is a great idea. Chris, about the wine jelly...maybe you could get the recipe from the lady at the church bazaar. I find that it helps if I have the recipe of something that I crave and know I could make it for myself if I got desperate. As you can tell, I have problems with feeling that I can "never" have something and letting myself know I could have it if I really, really wanted it helps stop the panic. I was only able to quit smoking because a new grocery near our house was open 24/7 and I knew that with my car keys and a credit card I could always get cigarettes, even in the middle of the night, if I was desperate. It was a "baby" strategy, but it worked. We will be traveling to visit some old friends of the DH and I am in a panic because they haven't seen me since I've gained so much weight. They are nice people so I don't think anyone will say anything mean. I already feel embarrassed about them seeing me. I've even considered not going which just makes me angry with myself. grrrrrrr...I'd just like to be "normal"! Thanks for listening, Jane |

K, I understand how you feel. Sometimes I feel "trapped" by the idea that I'll have to watch what I eat forever. It helped tremendously recently when I watched a segment on E television about movie stars who have to diet and exercise everyday in order to maintain their shapes. It seemed to help when I realized it is not just that I'm being "punished" for being overweight...just about everyone who is trim and fit got that way by making a conscious decision to do it. The other thing I've picked up from successful dieters on this website is that you can, periodically, splurge and still lose weight or maintain a weight loss. After all, it takes 3500 calories to add a pound...that's a lot of food. So, you will still be able to lunch out with friends or just enjoy your Thanksgiving dinner. You'll just have to get right back on track the next day. It's not like you'll never be able to enjoy that second slice of pumpkin pie...you just can't do it very often. Elin, I found your comments very encouraging. I look forward to being able to just select reasonable portions good foods and then going on with my day. Jane |

My current body image problem is the opposite...I don't feel as heavy as I am, which is ironic because when I weighed less I still felt "fat". I now keep a recent photo on the fridge to remind me that I really do need to watch what I eat. Pattikins, I, too, am always startled at that older woman I see in the mirror. (Where did she come from?) You are brave though to keep that large mirror in your bathroom.

Hi, Amethyst, I agree CC is great for support. I find it much better than any Weight Watchers meeting I ever attended. Everyone gets a chance to speak. Lots of people are going through the same things as you. And, best of all, there are so many really intelligent, witty people on this site that you can always find a good laugh or an inspiring thought here. I admire and envy you for catching the weight gain at just two pounds. I've lost weight before but, because I wasn't vigilant, the weight has "crept" back on while I wasn't paying attention. Jane |

Caro, you have to carry your own meds kit??? Gasp! I didn't think about that aspect of "exotic". I've only ever traveled to England where I'm sure it's OK to eat the food and drink the water. When my aunt went to Morocco she rode on a camel...are there camels in Tunisia? Molly, I like to roast cauliflower and broccoli for a pretty side dish. I was thinking how lovely a roast of all three colors of caulis would look...creamy white, green and orange. I do agree with your DH...they look just like brains! My rant...It has finally gotten cold here (low of 28 last night) and now all I want is starch! I love baked potatoes at this time of the year. Thankfully, last year I discovered they are just a tasty with fat-free yogurt as with sour cream. I know...I know, one baked potato won't destroy the calorie count...the problem is that I want 3 or 4 baked potatoes. I hate starch cravings! Happy Thursday All! Jane |

Gosh, I haven't checked in here in days. Sorry. I missed you all. Ohio, thanks for the bike seat advice. The weather here in North Florida is finally cooling off and DH and I like to bike and hike at this time of year. Pattikins, I am so glad to hear you are doing well. It is nice to get the "all clear" about exercise. I had a small heart attack last year and found the worst shock was when the local blood bank said I wouldn't be able to donate for 12 months and then not until my MD OK'd it. I got the word yesterday that he's cleared me to donate again. It made me feel "normal" again. Bonna, I hope you are well and feel yourself surrounded by prayer. Sue, Gee, finding the wedding togs on sale and the rings on sale...it sure sounds like this wedding thing is "meant to be". How wonderful! Anne, I pray you and your DH get over this rough patch soon. Your wedding sounds charming. I'm glad you have memories of special people woven into that part of your life's story. I've been married for 21 years and over that time we've lost several people who attended our wedding. The memories of that special time shared with them are now more precious than ever. Jane |

I love the grooming idea! I'm going to try it. There is also an old Weight Watchers trick of brushing your teeth after you eat so you won't want anything else which, also, works before you eat if you can catch yourself in time. My problem is catching myself in time. I don't play an instrument but I do needlework. If I think about it in time and grab my knitting, embroidery, whatever and keep my hands busy I can get my mind off food. But, I'm going to try the grooming idea ASAP...I haven't plucked my brows since sometime in the 1970's (I am blessed with thin, light, well-shaped brows) but I could really get into a pedicure! Caro, welcome back to the rants...I've missed your posts. Tunisia...I am soooo jealous! Oh to live in England and be able to travel to exotic places. You traveling from London to Tunisia is probably like me going from Tallahassee to New Jersey...hardly an exotic destination! I hope you've recovered by then and are able to enjoy the sunshine and wonderful food! Sue, you and Molly certainly have amazing adventures. My life is (thankfully) very dull by comparison (I am deathly afraid of spiders). Have you figured out what happened to the car's alarm? I hope that doesn't happen again! My latest rant...perversely, after finding out that Prozac may have contributed to my weight woes I've found myself frequently nibbling the left-over Hallowe'en candy. Like Sue, when upset I'll suddenly find myself eating something. I totally understand "coming to" from a trance-like state while stuffing cold leftovers down my throat! I need some kind of retina scan thingy on the fridge that will check to see if I'm in my right mind before it lets me open the door! JJ

DH and I learned about Guy (aka Guido) Fawkes at the Tower of London this past Spring. They have a great multi-media program about the Gunpowder Plot that makes the point that religious extremism is ugly no matter which religion or which century it shows up in. I wished DH a happy GF day today as he headed off to work...he made me promise not to burn anything in the front yard while he's gone. Molly, I am so glad you survived the spider attack. Thanks for sharing the story...I laughed so hard I woke up the cat! Swimsuits??? My legs look so awful I haven't worn a swimsuit in years. I simply don't swim. (I know...I need to get over the fear of exposure and join the water aerobics class at the gym.) My swimsuits usually did OK even with pool water because I washed them immediately with Woolite and let them drip-dry. I only lost one suit to poor care when my then newly-married DH washed and dried my favorite 12-year-old bathing suit in the machines. Little bits of elastic broke and stuck out of the material. I was devastated...it was a great suit...but I forgave him. I wish I still had that suit and the body that went with it!!! My rant...I just found out that Prozac might contribute to weight gain! Did anyone else know about this? I've been on Prozac for over 19 years and done nothing but gain weight or struggle mightily to lose a few pounds over these past two decades. I ran across a post on this site last week on this topic and did a web-search for information on SSRI's and weight gain. I was floored...when I first started Prozac they were saying it could cause weight loss! Now I learn that my sloth-like metabolism and belly fat may be related to Prozac!!! How come no one told me about this??? Like my MD, for example??? Needless to say, I am miffed. In all fairness, the med saved me at a very difficult time but now I'm going to try going off it since the main stressors are (thank God) no longer in my life. Now, if I can only get the MD's office to return my call regarding a med step-down plan... |

Hi, this is a nice idea if a bit intimidating...all of you tiny young things out there striving for 100 lb! 56 y/o Medium frame HW: 220 CW: 205 GW: 135 Calorie target: 1600 (although I've stopped losing so I might need to take that down a bit) Just an FYI for other medium to large framed 5'2"s...in adulthood I once weighed 107 lbs and was a size 7 Junior Petite for maybe 5 days and I was on weight loss meds at the time. I also couldn't sit in my mother's unpadded wooden dining chairs! I had no spare body fat so my sit bones hurt when I sat on an unpadded surface! I have been able to maintain 125 and looked great. I'm shooting for 135 now and will reconsider my goal when I get there...anyway, if you have a med to large frame you need to weigh more and you'll have great curves. Jane |
