NPR for global news and my local paper for local news.

...my local paper is very conservative...yet NPR is not, it's sort of refreshing to get two "views" on facts.

There is no law that states we have to pay taxes...none...money is being taken from those who earn it legally.

There's no law saying we have to pay taxes? really? so everyone is just paying taxes for fun?  If there is no law saying you have to, and you don't want to, why don't you stop?

None, there is no law.  If you can find it please send it to me, I'll give you my e-mail address.  I'm very serious, if you do find it let me know.

PG - I actually value a lot.  You don't know me so it's hard for me to give you everything without you seeing my actions.  I do donate to the local fire and police squads every year, and I have done my share in filling the pot holes on my street.  I value the community that does that.

Also, I let a homeless man live with me when he was on hard times, I donate to local and national charities. I volunteer at a local shelter many times a year.  I'd rather give my time than my money if I can...but sometimes, money is needed and in those instances I give.

I'm having a hard time articulating myself here, so I'm going to bow out, but if I can compile a list a bit later after work, I'll try and get my thoughts out in a coherent fashion. :)

...and it's Tatjana....with a J, not a Y. :)

I didn't exect the responses I got here...and yes, we are heading 100% to a socialist state.  Show me how we are not please.

for starters, a socialist state wouldn't contribute billions to support corporate entities.  it would either let them fail or take them over.

That's not the only thing that constitutes a socialist state.  ....If I said we are, then I will retract that...we are heading towards...we are not currently.

you're going to pay on the front end or on the back end - so you choose

pay for treatment

pay for prisons, police, courts, and higher prices due to theft.

which is better, in your opinion?

Oh it all pisses me off.

I'd chose not to pay for any of it......I don't enjoy living in a socialist country...I don't think any of us should pay for it....they're sucking us dry of any money any of us has left...and now they're going to pull more out of me?  Awesome.

wow.

ok - well, at least you're consistent.

i DO like to be able to call the police, and the fire department.  Eh, I think it should be a volunteer service if there is one.

i DO like to have criminals locked up.  Why?  I don't like paying for them...and they're going to get back on the street within 30 years depending on the crime anyway.

i DO like driving on nice roads without having to pay a toll every 2 miles. You must not live in Mass.....the roads are HORRIBLE...and I've not seen a road crew since spring of last year....

i DO like having a military that can defend the country (and i wish that is what it were being used for, rather than invading and occupying other countries) I disagree here.

i DO like the public schools that my daughter has attended as I would be unable to afford a private school for her -- i'd put her up against any kid from india or korea or china.  I also disagree with public school systems...I believe in home schooling.

i Don't mind paying my fair share for these things - it's called Civilization.  Our ideas of civilization are different.....that's all...just different.  Ever read Ishmael...or any of those series?

i would be willing to pay for a health care system that focuses on prevention and outcomes in order to lower the costs for everyone, including for mental health, which is really no different than other health, it's just less well understood that you don't consciously control your serotonin, GABA and dopamine levels, etc. I agree with preventative medicine and help.

i DO mind paying a higher percentage of my income in taxes than hedge fund managers, corporations and other elites do -- they benefit from all of the above "socialist" services, and they definitely want to do business in the United States and profit here, but don't want to pay their share.  that makes them leeches.  There is no law that states we have to pay taxes...none...money is being taken from those who earn it legally.

I didn't know how to change the colors of my answers other than to bold them, so I mean no disrespect with the bolding of my  answers...I wish there was a way to turn them blue or something. :)  Just my opinion...just my two cents...don't let it upset if you don't agree....that's all...just an opinion. :)

The best solution, to me, is about education and service.

If we can get kids out in the community learning about the problems, helping with volunteering, we can teach them to stay away from drugs a lot better than preaching to them in a classroom.

This...I agree with this!  :)

And "they" is the government, out cities, our states.

And my money is the taxes I pay.

I didn't exect the responses I got here...and yes, we are heading 100% to a socialist state.  Show me how we are not please.

My college has a marathon "team" that runs it - if I register with the school I'm in no matter what. I think I could probably walk a marathon as it is now, it's just running one that I'm worried is impossible.

Well then you've answered your own question....if you think it's impossible it will be....

If you don't...then it won't.

I don't see why I should have to pay for someone to heal themselves, when, they most likely don't want help in the first place.

It's not my responsibility..

However, I do take responsibility to educate myself on addictions and take steps to prevent myself from becoming addicted in the first place.

We're saving for..... A HOUSE!!!! :)

We have our budget all set up with an Excel spreadsheet.  We save all our receipts and make sure we stick within our very strict budget.  We anticipate as long as we keep this up...we'll have $30,000 to put down as a payment in four years! woooo!

...also....another english bulldog....so, it's kind of a 2fer...I want them both but have to have one before I can get the other one! :)  Good luck everyone!!!

Saving can be difficult, but it's SO worth it!

The best advice I can give you...is to find a running store in your area.  They will watch you walk/run and advise you based on that.  The shoes will probably be in the same price range as the ones you have posted (ones I bought were cheaper).

Also take your old running shoes with you.

I was going to suggest this exact same thing.

If you want to talk, message me...my brother is bulemic, I know it's not the same exact thing, but dealing with an eating disorder is very difficult both emotionally and physically.

I should also mention he was anorexic for about 2 years maybe 9ish years ago...the restriction pushed him into bulemia.  He's been dealing with eating disorders for amost a decade now.

First guess - you're not wearing the right shoes.

Second guess - you aren't warming up before you start running (that's not static stretching, but actually warming up (loosening) your muscles.

Are you following a plan, like Couch to 5k (C25K)? If not, that might help.

My thoughts exactly!  My first guess was amethyst's guess..it was immediately the first thing that popped into my head.

I suggest going to a running store and having them help you find the ideal shoe for you.  Good luck!

Weight Loss Reward Apr 07 2009

It must be hard...your job..your position, I couldn't imagine doing what you do, you are to be rewarded, but have you considered rewarding yourself in different ways, other than food?

Sometimes, I enjoy a self done pedicure, manicure, bath with lots of bubbles and some candles, throw a book in there and I could be in there all night.  What about a walk after dinner?

I know it's hard, especially since you're so hungry when you get home, but I would do what gi-jane suggests and plan a meal for when you get home, eat the meal and then "treat" yourself to somethign, like a movie or a rockin' book, some time for YOU.  Do you have any hobbies?  Anything you can interject into your night?  Is there anything you wanted to try?  I used to reward myself with fresh acrylic paints on the weekend and I'd be so excited to use them through the week.  It's amazing how great a new paint brush can feel..or a new bottle of nail polish...or anything that suits you!  Good luck...it is hard...it really is.

Fitness Which budget treadmill? Apr 04 2009

I have a proform, but I don't remember what the model is.  I purchased it used from a lady off Craigslist for $200.

I've had it for about 3 months and it's been GREAT, no issues no problems.  She had it for 4 years and got it maintenanced every year, so she took good care of it when she had it.

So...in my experience, the proform is great, but again, she took care of it and I plan to do the same.  IF you could find anything on Craigslist..obviously, that would be good for you since you're on a budget.  When we went to pick it up, she left it plugged in and unfolded so I could get on it and try it before we left with it, I was grateful for that.

So, hopefully you can find a used one, maybe put a "wanted" in Craigslist?  But if not, I'm having success with the proform (and I run every day).

This is so confusing.  And that's all I have to say about that.

And by the way, did that woman on the beach pause to think that maybe, just maybe, those starfish WANTED to be on the beach?  Maybe they were going for a nice tan - trying to get their vitamin D up?  Or perhaps she was thwarting the next stage in evolution.  If she'd just been patient and watched, one of them may have sprouted an opposable thumb and hitchhiked its way to the nearest tiki bar.  Selfish, selfish girl.

Rock on...I'm more of a that girl myself, but certainly see this side of it.

We go to our local Asian Market an but a package...and I'm talking a package that will last us for a couple of weeks (two of us) for less than 5.00, now, the calorie in that is 350 per...I think they're rice noodles, but if you browse the market, you can find noodles for a lot less calories than those, but the prices are typically less than our local grand super market...a lot less.  Just an avenue to pursue.
