| Weight Loss | 1200 Calories is working for me. | Nov 25 2009 00:36 (UTC) |

Please keep in mind that on days you exercise, your deficit is going to be even bigger. If you MUST eat 1200 calories on most days, promise you will eat more on the days you work out. In general, I do not think a 1200 calorie diet is your healthiest, safest, and best option. I wish the best for you. |

For some reason this post just tickles my funny bone... Moonikins, I love the term a$$hat, it is so perfect sometimes. If any of you were wondering "Hey, what is an a$$hat?"... Does anyone else see the irony in the second guys post? Happy Friday Mooni, thanks for the laugh |

"I alternate a 60-120 seconds of sprinting with 60 seconds of jogging for 20 minutes." To the OP, it sounds like HIIT. But to the post above, I do not believe this is considered HIIT because you never let you heart rate come all the way back down. There are 2 part to High Intensity INTERVAL Training. The first part is the sprinting intervals and the second is the recovery intervals. If you don't fully recover, I don't think you get the same results... |

Hi Everyone- I was just referred to this group as I have been posting about NROLFW since I started the program about 6 weeks ago. I just started Stage 2 and I absolutely LOVE it. I haven't seen any weight loss yet, but I think I need to readjust my diet. Did anyone here lose weight with Stage 1? |

I only burned about 200 calories during each workout. Since I would have burned ~25 in those 20minutes just sitting on the counch, my net burn was only 175 calories. Just be sure to count it right. The weights part of each routine are very high rep and very low weight which I don't agree with. You would be better off lifting heavier weights and then doing 15 minutes of interval training (in my opinion). |

Original Post by awestendorf: Wow you really are lifting heavy. My record for squats is 115lbs at 8 reps and for deadlifts its 95lbs at 7 reps. I've heard most people say they DL more than they can squat and for the life of me I can't figure out why... and yes I do squat below parallel. I just started stage 2 so every other workout, I do at least 15 minutes of interval training. I am planning on increasing my cardio a little in hopes that I will start to see some weight come off. I will look for the NROLFW group... thanks! |

fatanr11~ I am a 25 yo female, I weigh 167 at 5'6". This is the most I have weighed in a really long time but like I said I am not operating at an extreme deficit any more. I would love to lose about 12 pounds (of fat). I LOVE the New Rules book and am so happy I found something that makes sense. Although I haven't lost any weight, I have definately managed to get some definition in my stomach area, arms, shoulders, and thighs. Something is working ;)
awestendorf~ did you find yourself tired at a 500 - 700 calorie deficit while lifting? How heavy were you lifting? My main goal is to steadily increase my weights and each time I do, I am dead tired when I get home. Also, did you find that running on non-lifting days made your workouts harder to get through? |

To be safe, you may want to ask your doctor if this type of exercise is ok to do in your particular situation. HIIT can be a great fitness tool but you should double check before giving it a go... |

Original Post by fatanr11: I just finished stage 1 of NROLFW (starting stage 2 in an hour). I am absolutely loving the workouts but I haven't lost any weight. Lou Schuler gives an easy formula for calculating how many calories we should be eating on lifting and non-lifting days. He then says if you are trying to lose weight, you should decrease your calories by NO MORE than 300. If you have too much of a deficit, you will have a rough time getting through the workouts. I have lost weight at a 1,000 calorie deficit from excessive cardio, but I couldn't keep it up and I gained the weight back. This time around, my focus is completely dedicated to the free weights and NROLFW. I am eating at the level Lou suggested for maintainence and I haven't gained any weight, which is very reassuring. I am just about ready to decrease my calories by 200 to see if that helps jump start my weight loss. Good luck to you! |

Forget crunches if you only have cement to workout on. You could do push-ups, squats, lunges, ect. I'm sure there are plenty of other exercises that can be done without a gym as well. I find that running in place can get rather boring, try mixing it up with jumping jacks. If you have access to the internet, try searching YouTube for some fun exercise routines... |

If you'd like more information about beginning lifting, try reading the New Rules of Lifting for Women. It looks to me as if amethystgirl has already read it. I just started the program, and I absolutely love it. You can buy it online for less than $10... |

Aventura Spa Palace in Playa Del Carmen
The food and drinks are delicious and the ocean and pool are wonderful. The staff is friendly and the rooms have a balcony and a private hot tub. Perfect for couples because you must be at least 18 to be a guest which means NO annoying kids screaming in the pool. No offense, I know not all kids are annoying... |

I yelled at the TV too. I don't necessarily agree with people losing 15lbs in a week but at least the show advocates diet, exercise, and commitment. Seeing her endorse diet pills makes me sick. Sell out is not a strong enough term for her. She is using her "power" for evil instead of good... |

| Weight Loss | Very Frustrated! | Jul 27 2009 23:22 (UTC) |

Please don't let the scale mess up your healthy life style. When your body is ready to drop the weight it will. As long as you keep up a healthy calorie deficit, weight loss is inevitable. I am going through the exact same thing right now. I have been working out like crazy (running 5 miles and weight lifting 5X a week) and eating to keep a 750 - 1000 calorie deficit. In the past 3 weeks, I've actually gained 1 pound. I know how my body works though, and soon the weight will start to come off. Running 8 miles can burn over 800 calories. Have you considered eating 200 calories more each day, or cutting back to 5 miles? This may just kick your body into weight loss mode... Good Luck and stay healthy! |

Thanks for the replies! I think a half marathon is a great idea. I am already running at least 3 times a week and my milage ranges from 3 - 5 miles. 13 miles sounds like a great goal. I just started back at the gym as well so I can lift on my non-running days. |

I hated the finale, it was terrible! I have watched the show religiously all season and was really looking forward to an exciting season finale, what a let down. It was soooo boring and drawn out. Helen looked awful, she lost too much weight. Terah and Mike looked wonderful, I wish one of them had won all the $$ |

| Fitness | 30 min of jumping jacks. Has anyone done this? | May 01 2009 00:59 (UTC) |

If you haven't tried to do jumping jacks for a solid 30 minutes, I think you might not know what you are getting into. I do a combination of jumping jacks, jump rope (without the rope), butt kicks, and punches while I'm watching tv in 1 minutes intervals - try not to take a break in between sets until you hit the 30 minute mark. My body bugg says I burn about 10 calories a minute which means I burn about 300 calories. I would highly recommend doing Jillian Michaels' 30 day shread part 1. It will give you some ideas of what you can do with very limited space. |

"I could be wrong. This is just the way that I see it. Not to say that studying world religions isn't a good idea, I just think that students would be more receptive to the information once they reach college level. Same idea with philosophy. Philosophy is a great field, but its all about questioning everything. I believe that students would get much more out of a philosophy class if it is taken in college as well."
I think for most student you are spot on. BUT there are some advanced students who can handle this subject matter early on, just as some can handle calculus at a young age. I personally wish I had been taught more about religion and philosophy in high school, it would have helped me choose my path for college classes. I discovered a passion for philosophy and religious studies in my last year of college and by then it was too late for me to go back and take more electives. |

I love when people comment about how often I eat. I have a whole shelf full of healthy snack food at my cube and people actually know me for it. Whenever I get a comment (usually from someone who is overweight) about how I am always eating, I like to say "Oh yeah, it's the only way I can lose weight." When people comment on my healthy eating habbits, it only makes me want to keep it up. |

My family is not religious and I was raised similar to what ~monkey described. I remember having to say the pleadge of allegiance in grade school and not liking the "under God" part. I knew as a 7 year old that I didn't believe in any God and as an adult I believe religion should be kept at home. As for Religious Studies (i.e. ALL religions) as a course, I'm all for that. Learning religion to practice it is one thing, learning it to become more educated is another. |

You simply are NOT eating enough. For someone your size at your activity level I would say do NOT eat less than 1,600 calories (that is the absolute MINIMUM). You are only going to lose weight if your body doesn't think you are starving it. Do your morning workouts and feel good knowing that you CAN eat and still lose weight. This 600-1,000 calorie stuff is what is killing your weight loss. The MORE you exercise the MORE you must eat to lose... it took me a long time to figure that out but once I did the pounds started to melt away. You are lucky... all you have to do is eat more ;) |

| Fitness | Elliptical vs Treadmill | Apr 14 2009 01:18 (UTC) |

For me personally, even at a high resistence, I do not see results from an elliptical. I started using the elliptical because I find it to be easier than running on a treadmill but after 6 months and no results, I switched back. I don't have issues with my knees or shins so the treadmill is my cardio machine of choice. On non-running days, I walk at an incline as fast as I can. Running has put me in the best shape I've ever been in. |

Usually I feel horrible when I cheat... then I remember that it is ok to indulge sometimes and if I stop looking at it as cheating then I don't feel so bad about myself. I went into Easter knowing that I'd eat a ton of chocolate, I allowed my self to indulge and now I'm right back on track. Who cares if I gain .4 pounds at least I'm still counting and on the right path. It's your Birthday, eat cake, eat as much cake as you want... and tomorrow get right back on track. No regrets and a very happy birthday :) |
