I know exactly how you feel when it comes to people commenting about what your eating or how much you are eating.

The other night, I had just gotten done with my dinner, but I was still a little bit hungry, so I went into the kitchen to get a little snack. My husband just happened to walk in the kitchen as I was looking in the cabinet, and he made the remark, "You are still hungry???". I know that he didn't mean it in an offensive way like I took it, but at the same time he knows I have issues with food because I have talked to him about it a million times. I ended up shutting the cabinet and walked away.

Then just this weekend, I was with my mom and I was eating a couple of pretzels, and my mom said "I am so glad to see that you are eating." Again, I know that she wasn't being rude or anything, but when it comes to food I rather people just not talk about it with me. I ended up telling her, "Can we please not talk about that."

The only suggestion I have to you is to sit your boyfriend down and express your feelings honestly. Just let him know again, how you struggle with food and maybe offer him some suggestions of maybe how he can help you deal with your issue. Don't worry about making him feel bad or anything, because in all honesty, he needs to know how you feel. If he truly loves you, then he will want to do anything he can to try and help you.

I wish you the best, because I know how hard it can be. Just stay strong. :)

I went and visited my cousin in the hospital on Saturday, and I am pleased to say that she is doing amazing! She has such a great attitude and she is ready to fight and beat this! She is pretty confident that they got all of the cancer out. I was so happy to see how great she was doing. She was sitting up in bed and talking to everyone. It is a little hard for her to eat, and she can't turn her head but that is because she has about a 7 inch incision going from the front of her neck all around to the side of it. I am so happy to see her progress! Thank you to everyone who has thought and prayed for my cousin and our family. All the thoughts and prayers are definitely working. In fact, the doctors are thinking that she will be able to go home today.

Also, I found out today that one of the cancerous lymph nodes had attached to her jugular veins. The doctors said that if they didn't catch the cancer at the time they did, my cousin would have probably had a massive stroke in three weeks and died. That was so shocking, but boy am I thankful that they got it out!

Again, thank you so much for your support!

I just found out that the doctors had to remove several lymph nodes. They said that the right side of her neck was clear, but the left side was a different story. They said they removed many lymph nodes from the front of her neck all the way to the back by her spine. That is really disconcerning because she has had the cancer for longer than we had originally thought. I was feeling better by hearing so many great recovery stories from you guys, but now that I hear the cancer has spread to so many lymph nodes worries me greatly. Just please keep praying/thinking about her.

p0nda, thank you for your words of advice. You have really helped me when it comes to speaking with my cousin. Thank you so very much. You are wonderful.

All of your responses are really helpful! Knowing that so many people have been able to go into remission is a great sign and it is encouraging as well. I will be sure to let my family know. I think that will really help the healing process.

I am not sure how my cousin is dealing with this right now because she just got out of surgery not too long ago and she hasn't been told the news that she has cancer yet. When she does find out, I know it is going to crush her, and I want to be there for her as much as possible. How can I support her and lift her spirits?

Thanks for the quick replies. The doctor has said that her form of cancer is slow growing and not too aggressive. The only thing that bothers me is that they did find cancer in her lymph nodes. I am not an expert about cancer, but I do know that when it has spread into the lymph nodes that is not a good sign.

My whole family is just taking this really hard because she is so young and it is hard to hear that one of your loved ones has cancer. Again, the thoughts/ prayers and comments that everyone makes is greatly appreciated.

The Lounge learning a foreign language May 20 2008

I have tried to learn Spanish and Turkish. For Spanish, I took classes from elementary school all the way into college. I think the best thing to learn a language is just be exposed to it on a daily basis. In college, I took the Spanish course every single day for an entire year. I think through this exposure I was able to learn the Spanish a lot better. In that class we also had outside homework assignments in which we had to use a computer program that would speak the Spanish to use and then we would have to complete the work based upon what was spoken. That really helped in being able to understand the spoken language.

As for Turkish, my husband is Turkish so he has been my teacher for that. When I first started out, I bought some books that had CDs in it. The book and CD helped a little bit since you have the words in front of you along with the CD that is able to pronounce the words for you. However, I think I was able to learn the language a lot better through actual conversations with my husband and other people who spoke the language.

As for being able to retain the language, for me, I need to be exposed to the language on a daily basis or I do tend to forget some of the words. For example, I haven't taken Spanish since three years ago, and I do sometimes forget a lot of the words. I think if I had a refresher course a lot of the words would come back to me though. Also, like I mentioned earlier, my husband speaks Turkish, and he has found that since he has been in the United States and away from being able to speak his language on a continuous basis, he sometimes does forget a lot of the words.

My suggestion would be to invest in some programs, but if it is possible I would enroll in some kind of class that can help you learn the languages. This way you can have extra practice.

Sorry this reply has been so long, but I hope it helps a little.

Anndjoe, I am really not used to going tanning, so I was really unsure of how long I would need to stay in the bed. I had no idea how intense the beds can be even after 6 minutes. Although I am burnt, at least I have learned my lesson.

After my sunburn heals, how long would you reccommend I stay in the tanning bed the next time? Should I increase the time slowly over time or what? Any suggestions would be wonderful so I know what I am doing!

My husband is Turkish and majority of Turkish people take their shoes off in the house. When I first went to Turkey, it was kind of hard to get used to taking my shoes off, but after awhile I got used to it.

If you think about it, taking your shoes off can be a really good thing. First, you don't track all the nasty stuff from outside into your home. Second, after a long day at work, you probably just want to come home and relax. So when you get home and take off your shoes, it is the first step into entering relaxation and giving your little feeties a nice rest. My third reason might be more for the girls like me, but I love house shoes, so it gives me another reason to go out and buy several pairs of comfortable house shoes. :)

Laschndr, I was surprised that I burned this bad after 6 minutes too. However, I still should have known better since I do have a lot of Irish in me and I tend to burn pretty quickly.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I will definitely try them out. I have been using lotion to try and soothe the pain. That seems to work while I am applying it, but later it starts to burn again. It is worse probably at night when I am trying to lay down because the bed just presses against my skin and aggravates the burn even more.

Also, it is really hard because I am a teacher and my kids are constantly hugging me and hanging on me, so it is quite painful.

Does anyone know why my stomach and thighs got burnt more than anything else on my body? My arms and lower legs are almost perfectly fine, but the other places is a different story.

The other day, my husband and I went downtown to see the Oklahoma City bombing memorial. In the memorial they have chairs that represent each of the people who was killed in the bombing. I wanted to go look at each of the chairs, but my husband said that he couldn't do that. Even though they were not graves, he still had some sort of issue with walking throughout the chairs. I found this a little strange, but each to their own. :)

I do have to admit that when I do go to the cemetary, I make sure not to step on the graves. I don't know why, but ever sense my grandmother passed away I have become really sensitive to this.

It is nice to know I might need to pee in a cup. Now I know not to tinkle before going there. Haha. Thanks for the heads up. :)

Also, I was unsure of how I should dress because I wasn't sure if this was a prescreening for an interview and I would need to look professional.

I do have a degree in education, in particular in elementary education with endorsments in early childhood education.

I would like to eventually go back and get my masters, but I would like to gain a few years of experience in the classroom before going back to school. What exactly is your masters program like?

When I lost 35 pounds I found that I was freezing all the time as well. I went to the doctor to check my thyroid and everything came back just fine. I persoanlly think the reason I am colder than I was before is because I lost quite a bit of the fat that was keeping me warm before.

When I was little, my family had a little teacup chihuahua named Pebbles. She was a serious mess. My mom and dad used to smoke and Pebbles would somehow find her way onto the table where the ash tray was located and snatch the cigarette butts and chow down. I think she had a bad taste in food, because there was a million better tasting things that she could have gotten into, but she just had a love for those cigarettes.

I had "burp pads" that I could not live without when I was younger. They seriously went everywhere with me, and if I misplaced them I would go crazy until I found it. If I didn't have my burp pads at night, then I couldn't sleep. I would bunch up two or three burp pads on my pillow and rest my head on them to fall asleep. As I got older, I didn't need to carry the burp pads around with me, but I still needed them to sleep. Eventually, I realized that I probably needed to move away from my burp pads, but I had to have some coaxing from my mom. Although I don't use them anymore, I still keep them in my room in the drawer. I just can't get rid of them because they were a big thing to me. Also, even though I don't use the burp pads anymore, whenever I go to bed I have to take a blanket and bunch it up on my pillow in order to sleep. :)

Weight Loss Anyone here on Alli? Mar 31 2008

My mom has been taking Alli since the beginning of this year. I think she has lost about 20 lbs so far. She has only had one negative incident with Alli but that was after she ate out at a Cajun Restaurant. However, I have noticed that she has been lacking in energy for the last several weeks. I don't know if it is because of Alli, but from January - February she was walking on the treadmill for approximately 30 minutes five days a week. Now, she hasn't exercised in about two or three weeks and she complains that she is always tired. I don't know if it has decreased her weight loss though. Personally, I think that before you try Alli, you should try counting calories and start an exercise regime. I would hate to spend 60 some dollars to lose weight if you could lose it by just watching your calorie intake. That is just my opinion though.

I think your need is very important. First of all, you should be so proud of yourself that you have the strength and will to get help. Just try to stay positive when you go to your first counseling session tomorrow. Please do not think that your counselor will not think you are sick enough because she went into her profession to help people like you. Anyone that comes to her, she will see as someone who is in need and she will do whatever she needs to do to try to help you. Just be open and honest with her and all will go well.

Anyway, I will definitely pray for you! Again, I am so happy that you are taking this step to become healthy.

Keep us updated.
