stevia is a natural sugar substitute and if you insist on using one i would use that one. artificial sweeteners are not good for anyone's body regardless of if symptom's show or not. it's NOT GOOD. i use maple syrup or honey or if i really do need sugar i use raw sugar. i also drink plain seltzer which i think is really refreshing (and you can get it with flavors) but maybe others need something more exciting. i haven't been into sugary soda since i started having to pay for my own dental work. curses, a lot of mainstream stores are expanding what they offer for organic and healthy so there is hope for you yet! |

| this is a good idea. i also eat some of the same things every day and find it really cumbersome to have to pull up a report for past days and add each ingredient for each thing. for example, i have a smoothie that has some variations but has many of the same ingredients everyday. if i could somehow repeat the list the following day that'd be awesome. | |||

thanks for that link dagicat. as i mentioned earlier, a lot of the commercial soy products you find are from "round up ready"/gmo laden soy crops. i like almond milk because it's lower in carbs than rice milk but my bf drinks rice milk and i think both are nutritionally a lot better for us than cow or soy milk. angel eyes i can't speak for everyone else but what i was trying to say is that even though i don't consume milk, organic dairy farmers are more likely to be treating their cows well than non organic dairy farmers. your uncle is doing a brave thing in today's industry.

| stevia is much better for you than splenda. sucralose is not good for you. if you use stevia, keep in mind it is SUPER sweet so you need a lot less than sugar. it comes in handy little packets too. i personally usually use maple syrup as a sweetener. | |||

i drink the green kind every day if i can. it has spirulina. my second choice is citrus. i definitely feel it, literally through my body as i drink it. i haven't really seen weight loss results per se but it does help with appetite. |

you need lots of protein and fiber and less filler carbs to stay full. especially in the morning. luna bars are like clif bars. i would say more of a snack than a meal replacer |

| Foods | Quinoa or Coucous? | Aug 30 2007 04:56 (UTC) |

QUINOA!!!! it's not only whole grain but it's a complete protein. it's like eating rice and beans. this is what wikipedia said: In contemporary times this crop has come to be highly appreciated for its nutritional value, as its protein content (12%–18%) is very high. Unlike wheat or rice (which are low in lysine), quinoa contains a balanced set of essential amino acids for humans, making it an unusually complete foodstuff. This means it takes less quinoa protein to meet one's needs than wheat protein. It is a good source of dietary fiber and phosphorus and is high in magnesium and iron. Quinoa is gluten free and considered easy to digest. Because of all these characteristics, quinoa is being considered as a possible crop in NASA's Controlled Ecological Life Support System for long-duration manned spaceflights
yay quinoa! |

the FDA says a lot of things that aren't true. rBGH has been proven to cause mastitis (udder infections) in cows, and the major risk of cows with mastitis is that they are given tons of antibiotics to cure which we in turn consume (not to mention that there is pus in the milk from infected cows). it also reduces their longevity of milk production and their life and it causes birth defects in their calves. what is it doing to the humans that consume it? studies have also shown it causes cancer. we are the ONLY industrialized nation to not ban it. also, did you know that monsanto, the makers of rBGH are also the creators of that fine product AGENT ORANGE in addition to the fact that they are poisoning the country's crops with GMO laden seeds? (in addition to like 5 thousand other horribly corrupt and irresponsible things that they do?) check out this link: http://www.organicconsumers.org/rbghlink.cfm in addition to this section there is a wealth of organic news info. most soy is genetically modified these days and is so oveprocessed and bad for you. the stuff you commonly find is owned by big businesses who add a lot of crap to it. if i use milk i prefer a nut milk substitute like almond milk. i do think milk from cows is for baby cows not humans. that said, if you are going to drink milk, if you buy organic and locally produced (if possible) then you can feel confident as to where it is coming from and how the cows are being treated. i've read some bad things about horizon but i suppose it's better than buying something commercial that definitely has hormones in it. just pay attention to labels and read up on things but find viable sources of information.

| i just want to put in another vote for 0% fat greek style yogurt. we have "fage" and "oikos" where i live. the plain is good with a little honey or agave or maple syrup (probably stevia too if you wanted a sugar substitute). oikos also makes a vanilla which is a little higher in calories but much. | |||

hard boiled eggs, cheeses and nuts are all really good quick high protein snacks. most soy is so over processed that it isn't really good for you. i also think milk is for baby cows and prefer almond or hemp milk but that's just me. organic food and whole grains are always good but sharee said she was a student so it may not be realistic. it's good to eat food that has been as little processed as possible. the less you do to already delicious and nutritious foods the more of their nutrition you will keep and therefore get into your body. if you can find 0% fat greek style yogurt (we have "fage" and "oikos" where i live), it is creamy and thick like the fatty style yogurt but without the fat and super high in protein (13g a cup!) and low in calories and carbs. |

| juicebox it's totally normal to feel the way you do we just don't want you to be unhealthy. there's so much pressure to be smaller than you are no matter what size you are and it comes from all directions especially in high school. i'm 5'6" and i was 125-130 in high school and always thought i was fat. i had very small friends and none of them ever said i was fat but i just felt large next to them. i also had a boyfriend who was a jackass and made comments that made me think i was fat (and subsequent bfs through my teens and 20s after that). people can be cruel. it doesn't sound like you are "fat." just make sure you eat healthy food and exercise. your body will do the rest for you. | |||

you have to factor in the type of carbs you are eating. whole grains and unprocessed carbs are GOOD, processed carbs are not so good. there are tons of glycemic index diets that all say the same thing. it's good when you are dieting to include fiber and healthy carbs because they help fill you up and help you process protein properly. oats and quinoa and long grain rice are all good for you. my general rule for eating is if i look at the ingredients and i can't pronounce something or don't know what it is i don't eat it. i also don't eat any high fructose corn syrup or trans fats. and i try not to eat processed sugars and use maple syrup or raw sugar for sweetener. |

| i'm brand new, can i join in? start date tomorrow. i just joined the site yesterday and have not gotten within my suggested calorie range yet. buhri - i work at a co-op and compared all the different non dairy milks and found low fat vanilla almond milk is better nutritionally than the others, including soy milk. for one thing, the type of soy products on the market are not very good for you (SO over processed and yucky). almond milk has less carbs, calories and fat and i think more protein than others (rice, hemp, soy, etc). i drink a smoothie every day for lunch they are so delicious! |

| hello, it's my first post and second day here. i am 30 and the last time i weighed in i was at 165, which is where i've been for about a year or so. at 5'6" i'd like to see 135 (but haven't been there in about 5 years and would settle for something in the 140s). my peak weight was 182 about 2 years ago and i did a modified atkins/south beach/combining foods diet in which i got down to 150 but as soon as i got sloppy i got to where i am now. i've been struggling to find what will work and feel good and not make me miserable and obsessive and thought i would try this out. it's a little difficult to find some of the foods i eat in the database as i don't eat fast foods or processed foods and eat a lot of natural foods that aren't in there but i'm figuring it out for the most part. i'm finding that eating something healthy every 3-4 hours has made me feel good even if it isn't helping with weight loss (i'm not gaining anyway) and choosing healthy carbs instead of no carbs is also a lot more satisfying. and i can't tell you enough how much i love having a smoothie for lunch every day. you can pack them full of lean protein and fiber to leave you full for hours. i got the basic recipe structure from the "abs diet" book which i found somewhat useful but not fully realistic for me. as far as exercise, there are weeks where i am really good and do an hour of yoga pilates 5 days a week and there are weeks where the DVD never surfaces. i've been trying to walk around and ride my bike whenever i can these days while the weather still allows it but i fear the winter and the sedentaryness it may bring. anyhow, it's nice to see others with similar stories. i hope to be in the "150s club" sooner than later and eventually the "140s club" and maybe even lower.. we'll see. |
