In terms of physics, I think the question about the tree falling in the forest actually can be answered. If there is literally no one (including insects, animals, humans, etc.) to receive the vibrations in the air that are caused when the tree falls down, then it doesn't make a sound. Sound is produced when disturbances in the air meet with ear drums and send a signal to the brain. Otherwise, the air simply moves.. xD Sorry for the lame rant; incidentally our choir was having a discussion about this topic with our instructor, and he won with this argument.
I guess I'll contribute a riddle:
(Answer: unscramble the first letters of the bolded words in this message.)

Their VOICE. It has to be just the right degree of deepness. Not too manly, but a voice that you know can sing. Sing you to sleep, or resonate in a theatre. xD Personality-wise, I prefer a sort of dorkiness, or a way of saying something funny where they only realize it's funny after you burst out laughing. Neither of these are too weird or out of the ordinary... |

Last summer, I was almost 15 and kissed a 19-year-old guy at camp. >_< Before anyone gets weird thoughts, he was a great guy, except now he's halfway around the world and we really don't feel anything for each other anymore. I mean, if I saw him again, we'd just be like old friends. I think after that experience, I seriously learned that awesome guys are hard to come by. It's helping me to concentrate in high school now. =D I'm not going to rush my next kiss. Kisses are overrated. ;) |

XD I'm Chinese... and I've known how to use chopsticks since I was four. And yes, I have to admit, I'm quite proud of that habit (lol "instinct"). I don't even use spoons anymore. If you don't mind using chopsticks, and it helps to pace your eating and makes you savour the food more (it helps ME ^_^), then it will definitely get easier with practice. I know I am a "shoveller" - even with chopsticks, I can shovel rice into my mouth quickly and with ease. *wince* Not to mention, pick up green peas one at a time at lightning speed. XD;;

I've always thought the French name Genevieve has a nice, soft sound to it. I used to think it was just *with accent*"jen-uh-veev" but then I heard it like "jen-uh-vee-ave". Either way sounds soooo nice to me. |

I'm pretty sure you've already looked up "Birthday Cake" in the food database. The calories are measured in "1/10 [of whole cake] slice". Like said before, just estimate the amount. |

Yayyy!! You mean going home as in, going home to your parents in Thailand? Sounds awesome... <3 Lol, I KNOW you can hang in there until then. By that time, you'll have mastered good habits, and be able to enjoy yourself. (: Aren't you glad you posted on here BEFORE you decided to... commit suicide? Hopefully, you NEVER feel like that again - I mean, how would you be able to "go home"? XD I'm looking forward to summer too... and in the meantime >_> I'm "eating" through my mountains of homework... |

Original Post by charming_imy27: Oh yes... it sure IS a crazy world - teen girls are more and more competitive about things like weight and looks. I don't have much to say about that except - now that I've learned to eat healthy, I can eat basically whatever I want until I'm full. I jog an hour every day while watching 3 episodes of my favourite online anime. It passes the time quite well. If at anytime you want to exercise but the gym is closed or something, do squats or another resistence exercise in your room. That way, some of the extra calories can go to building muscle. What I like to do is, while I'm on the computer doing homework, I don't sit and instead, I walk on the spot in front of my desk, leaning forward to type. Yes, call me weird, but it helps me believe that I'm burning SOME calories... It sure feels good to have regular meals and then a treat, while other people look miserable not eating anything and "complaining" about how much I eat. But I DO work for it - in my own, fun way... |

I hope this is not the wrong thing to say, and it sounds like you're feeling a bit better now. I just want to add that WOW I DID THAT EVERY DAY FOR 3 WEEKS OR SO WHEN I WAS RECOVERING. (No, seriously, I binged and almost finished an 8-oz bag of pistachio nuts, something like 1200+ calories). I woke up the next morning and the scale hadn't budged. Seriously. I've calculated the total amount of calories (approximately) that you listed. The good news is - you're barely over 2000 calories. Since you're a teen, the MOST you could POSSIBLY gain from this experience is 0.06 lbs. I know you're in recovery, and is trying to maintain your weight now. I've read your previous posts before, and wow - you got healthier MUCH faster than I did. Try to keep it up! Think of today as a treat day, and get back on track as fast as you can - which you're doing right now. Like everyone's been telling you here - tomorrow is a new day. I think an orange and a cup of milk is good. Better something healthy than nothing at all or something sugary! Good luck! ^_^ |

I am by no means agreeing or disagreeing. However, I find this thread interesting because that's EXACTLY what my Chinese mom tells me - that rice left in the cooker for a day is fine. We eat like that EVERY single day - literally. We have rice for dinner, save the leftovers in a closed rice cooker, then scoop it out the next day and reheat it before eating it for lunch. All five people in my family have been doing this for years. I think you're right to stay on the safe side, but keep in mind that probably 95%+ of Chinese people do it your wife's way. It's completely between you and your wife's preferences. |

| Weight Loss | Little help? Burn meter seems to be underestimating... | Feb 27 2008 06:22 (UTC) |
1 |
The 1680 number is your total estimated calorie burn for that day if you stay at the activity level that you had chosen when you set up your profile on the site. (Sedentary, Lightly Active, Active, etc.) If you add 1000 cals of exercise, it subtracts the calories that you WOULD have burned if you'd sat there doing nothing. Example: you would burn 60 cals an hour sitting, but if you'd jogged all that time and burned 400, realistically, only 340 cals should be added to your estimated total for the day. That's my take on how the burn meter works. If I explained it horribly, don't hesitate to ask again. ^^; |

| Pasta, sauce, dressing on the salad, etc. can have quite a bit of sodium in it. You must have retained from water due to that increase. Don't worry about it too much - hey, it's one day in - what, how often do you get to see your bf in person? I don't know about you, but over-indulging by something like 500 calories for ONE DAY in many? You won't even remember the difference by next week! | |||
| Weight Loss | How can breakfast help you lose weight? | Feb 20 2008 08:24 (UTC) |

No one seems to have mentioned this yet. And since everyone's already said what I was going to say, I'll just add in my two cents. ^_^;; Your roommate seems to... have an eating disorder? Well, that's too strong of a term to describe her, but you know what I mean. And, have you ever thought that the reason she is so competitive and grouchy is because she skips breakfast? I used to have anorexia (it's HORRIBLE - I might have ate less than your friend, and I wasn't even trying to "beat" anyone). The ONLY thing I DIDN'T do wrong is that I never skipped breakfast. I always guaranteed an egg and a glass of milk every single morning. Oh, I might also add that my parents are western and traditional doctors. Anyways, in the morning, I'd feel great, but then by afternoon, I kept feeling like I wanted to punch something because I was feeling... in control? Like I was "proud" of myself for controling what I ate. That may be what your friend is feeling - even if she doesn't realize it now, she's slowing getting to the point where, it's not even ABOUT you anymore - she just wants to get skinnier and skinnier because it makes her feel "in control". Teasing you is just a bonus. I used to always feel down, and my Chinese parents, because they're so strict, thought I was just being stubborn and "teenager-ish", so there were times when we got into ridiculous fights. Literally, they threatened me if I refused to eat. Another thing is, how can you be sure your friend eats "a sandwich and 700 calories later..."? Does she brag to you, like "Today, I ate this food and this food..."? If she really does eat so little, then by all means, don't let her teasing get to you; you sound MUCH healthier! And if she really IS losing weight by eating so much, by all means, there's nothing either of you can do to change that. She may just have a very fast metabolism (didn't you say she's like, 5 heads taller than you? XD). But, if she doesn't exercise now, that metabolism will slow down later or when she's older (oh wait... by that time, you won't be her roommate... ) while your metabolism will still be going strong.
Sorry for the very long "two cents". |

I saw this post and I guess I'm very late in replying, but what I try to do everytime I have an intense craving that I just HAVE to resist because I know I need the calories for later is... keep a pack of gum or bag of tiny mints on hand. So everytime it's like *the cookie's looking at me... and beckoning for me to eat it...* I take a deep breath ^o^ and stuff one in my mouth. It's said that mint helps suppress the urge to eat (when you're not hungry) and it works for me. Just thought I'd throw that out there 'cuz no one's mentioned it yet... I don't think. |

Thanks for the support, everyone! Well, I do hope that I am "growing". Although, I just measured myself and I'm half a cm shorter than how tall I was a month ago... Even if my last measurement was inaccurate, I'm not convinced that I got taller... T_T I wish I'd grow in the right places, like UPWARDS and not in the middle. ;) Oh wait... the chest and butt would be nice thought. |

Wow, this forum thread is still up? XD Thank you for replying! Haha, whoops, this is very outdated now. Now, my stat is 5'2.5", 99 pounds. -_-; I think what really "helped" with the rapid gain is my (literal) weakness of almonds and nuts. And my mom is deliberately punishing me by buying 5 pounds of them at a time, saying "I have to learn to control myself and it's my own fault if I get fat" which is very true... but I wish she could maybe buy some this week, then none the next, then buy them again, etc. Right now I can't help but eat roughly 400g of almonds per week. But you know what's really strange? After entering my stats and logging exercise, my total calorie burn for the day usually comes to 1700kcal. I usually eat 1800+ these days, so I think that's why I'm gaining. It DOESN'T help when everyone's like "EAT MORE"... Not to sound really ignorant, but I DON'T see why everyone thinks teenagers can just eat and eat and not worry about anything. It's not true. |

It'd be very helpful if you'd offer us your stats. How much do you weigh, how tall are you, and what's your age? Because losing weight is one of the most confusing things dependent on so many factors, usually it's not something you're doing "wrong" but perhaps even simply: you're already at a health weight. Of course, I can't decide, but like I said before, more information is needed if you seek advice. |

I think what we mean to say is, no, you will definitely not gain weight from eating that. If you log all that in, I'm very certain the nutrition grade will be an A and you'll only be at 300 calories. How about trying for some nuts/protein? They provide really healthy good fat, and eating just a small handful of them won't even add a dent of weight to your body. Plus, I'm assuming you'd be hungry after eating what you've listed... try nuts, and you'll find it holds over for your hunger longer. |

I think I'll toss in my 2 cents... XD Coming from an asian family where a mother insists on raw ingredients for home-cooked meal every night, that's the first thing I'd suggest - more RAW things that you can cook yourself anyway you like. I'm pretty sure you already know more about this though. Things I'd suggest (they're not very processed or sugary, so I don't know how much this helps): -FRUIT, definitely keep a bunch of your favourite fruits on hand - really helps with sugar craving (simple, health snack is like strawberries with fat-free yogurt or something) -nuts (good fats) apparently, replacing monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats by eating things like nuts and avocados will reduce inner fat - the kind that's really dangerous for your health and helps you lose weight by being satisfying(good fiber content) JUST watch portions... - fresh/frozen veggies like carrots and maybe fat-free dressing -jar of PP2 (GREAT replacement for peanut butter and MUCH lower in calories, I've heard...) -sugar-free gum :D (to keep yourself busy when all else fails) Hehe, I won't be posting any stories of mine this time - I only addressed your frist question. I know this is very basic advice, but that's what I'd do! XD |

I'll try them too! ^_^ Next time I have a chance, I'll check this list and pick a tasty-looking one! |

I'm considered very, very disgusting for my food habits in my Asian family. >.< Trying to stop... - I can NEVER eat a whole piece of something (ex. picking out broken pieces of veggies and meat with chopsticks, etc) - when I indulge on almonds, I MUST eat the shrivelled, wrinkled, cracked, curly, small, irregular shaped ones. I prefer crisper, crunchier almonds - and there are too many "identically" perfect almonds in there - I MUST eat unique ones... - With peanuts I like eating the thin skin on the kernels, for extra fiber. My siblings hate it, so i "peel" all the roasted peanuts and splitting the snack (giving them the actual "peanutty" part!). Then, I slowly eat the broken ones. - during lunch at school I mooch food off people (this is really rude, i know, but my friends ALWAYS bring extra food to share with everyone) like a square of Hershey's, orange slices, apple slices, etc. - my siblings will only eat certain parts of vegetables, so I eat the parts they don't like, because there is seriously no food in this world that I really really can't stand (ex. I only eat broccoli stalks, my sister eats broccoli florets) |

Original Post by lauren_s: Sorry, this is just a poor penniless 14-year-old who's strict asian mom does all the strict asian shopping. *nod nod* XD Yeah, I have NO choice about what my mom buys at the store. When I asked her to buy almonds in packages, or in-shell (so it takes longer for me to eat and allows time for someone to stop me), she refuses, saying, the whole, kerneled almonds are more convenient to buy, generally cheaper and the only way I'm going to learn to "control" myself is if she forces me to. Dx Waaaahhhh how will I face alcohol and smoking when I'm older if I have no self-control?? Oh well. AT least it's only almonds NOW. >_>;; |
