| Well, I'm sedentary, so the site says my burn meter is 1700. I guess, my question is what net calorie intake should I have to lose weight? | |||

My mother is the quintissential apple shape, seriously, she looks just like an apple with toothpicks stuck in for limbs (Very nice legs though, must admit). I've inherited this shape from her, with the extra bonus of bulgy thighs and winged arms. The best thing for the stomach is water. Water, water, water and heaps more water. Stomach bloating is ofter caused by salt retention, so drinking heaps of water will flush it out nicely. When you look in the mirror and see the phantom pregnancy, have about a half a litre and it'll clear up in a couple of hours. |

I'm gonna agree with mop on this one. I've been overweight my whole adult life and everytime some well-meaning family member/friend/co-worker mentioned it, I felt depressed and hopeless. Not once did it motivate me to diet or exercise. Hearing 'You used to be so thin and beautiful but now you've put on so much weight' or any variation of that, no matter how subtly phrased, upset me. I was so defensive, I could hear 'You are fat' in the words 'How are you today?'.? The worst thing my partner ever said to me was 'Another icecream?? That's 3 today. You'll get fat!''. I won't go into details regarding the fallout, let us just say that he now flinches whenever we pass a Haagen Daaz. In conclusion, never tell your girlfriend she's fat. Trust me, it's for your own well-being.

GREAT NEWS!!! He gained back a kilo! He's now heavier than me again, so all is right with the world. Still, one kilo is only a slight margin... And something else just occured to me...everyone here eats carrot sticks and is trying to lose weight, but our carrotless partners eat as they please and stay thin. That's it! I've found the answer! NO MORE CARROT STICKS! |

What, is 3000 a lot? I regularly ate steak for breakfast, a fried chicken and chips meal for lunch and a large pizza for dinner. Plus I snacked on burgers, fries, chocolate, etc, all through the day. But I washed it all down with alcohol though, so I guess that makes it ok. (Yes, at one point I was very large. Lost about 5 kilos from cutting down to 1 McDonalds meal a day from 3. )

Hey trxr4kids, It's great that your bf is so supportive! And a hoover! Mine use to make derisive comments about overweight women we saw on the street (though not about me, he's not suicidal). I've gotten him over this, but his opinion does reflect the common outlook of the people here. Even when I feel good about my weight, I know that people looking at me see me as an elephant in shoes. I'm trying to only let my own opinion matter, but actually, for my health, I do need to lose weight. Fattening up my bf like a turkey before Xmas won't change this. |

Hey Kate, Yes, my boyfriend is Japanese and about 5'8 too. He was developing a satisfactory beer gut (as an Aussie, I like my men to have a bit of padding) but now it's all gone. As for beating him at anything athletic, not likely. He regularly does martial arts and loses heaps of weight through that. The only 'sport' I can beat him at is drinking alcohol. Does that count? |

Hey anna-anna, Yeah, when I met him, he weighed about 60 and I weighed around 75 (having come down from 83) and I quickly lost weight from being with him. Having a new boyfriend helped relieve some of the emotional triggers that were encouraging me to eat, so I lost weight from that. More so, every time I opened the fridge to eat something, it was already gone. Now I'm down to around 64 and he's up to the same. It's not that I am extremely overweight (at least, not compared to before), but I'm surrounded by thin people. No joke, the average weight for women my height here is about 50 kilos. And they're all on diets. It's hard to feel good about your weight when the person prancing in front of you has a waist the size of your forearm. And then you pass them and realize they're a man. With nice hair.

Philomela, I honestly got a smile on my face just from reading that. I feel really motivated now, especially since I totally sympathize with the 'These jeans must have shrunk in the wash!' excuse. Next time I'm tempted to break my diet, which will probably be in about 5 minutes from now, I will remember your story. Thank you! |
