Weight Loss Starting an '200+' Group Jun 17 2008

Hi, I'd like to join.
Last year, I joined CC in the summer, lost about 20 lbs, but then right after New Years, I slacked off and went right back to my old habits.  I gained it all back.

I've lost weight, gained it back, lost it, gained it back so many times.  It is terrible!  I can't seem to keep it off during the winter!  I absolutely hate to be cold, and I live where there's usually a couple of inches of snow/ice on the ground from December through early March (or beyond!).  I hate exercising indoors, too.

CW 247
GW 1st-199 Dec 2008, 2nd-150 May 2009

I have to say, I really doubt that I will reach either of my goals.  Sad, but true.  I keep telling myself it is possible if I just try HARD, but I don't think I really believe myself since the goals seem so far away.

So, I thought I'd join this list and see if I can get motivated to try again.

I've been doing heavy gardening 3 days a week for 4 or more hours each time, and I can tell a big difference in my endurance levels, strength and energy already.  I hope I can keep it up and it will start to show on the scales!

VK - don't give in to the bad feelings!  You know it is just sodium!  You are a source of inspiration for me.  I am SO inspired by the weight loss that you have acheived so far. Just take a deep breath, look back at ALL that you have achieved, and don't let your friend bother you.   Before you started on this weight loss trek, did you think you'd be able to do all that you do now?   Probably not! GIVE YOURSELF SOME CREDIT and don't let it bother you that your friend has a flat tummy and can ride 23 miles in 2 1/2 hours.  (I have a friend like that too. She likes to rub in in whenever she acheives something that I have not.  I think they are deeply competitive people, and so I just say  "hey, that's great, look at you go!" and then I congratulate myself for all of the things that I have done, and can do, that she cannot.)

My goal weight for 1 Jan is 210lbs (doesn't have to be what you gave us on 1 Sep)

To accomplish this, I will eat a minimum of 1200 calories and a maximum of 1800 calories per day. I will eat at least 25 grams of fiber, and drink at least 64 oz of water per day
I will make every effort to make wise food choices when in my power to do so.
I will try to face down indulgences, tasting only a bite -- realizing that it is within MY power to recreate a holiday recipe if I need/want to -- I do NOT need to eat as if I will not see this food again (for a year)
I will exercise for a minimum of 45  minutes 5 times a week.

I understand that there will be times when I don't meet my daily goals -- I will not panic and I will NOT GIVE UP. I will start again as soon as I can. This is MY life, this is MY health, and I have the power to do this.

I am losing weight for the following reasons:

  1. To improve my health
  2. To be more physically fit so that I can participate in more things and not be embarrased.
  3. To feel comfortable in my own body.
  4. To enable me to give the training sessions that my job requires without feeling body-conscious.

I may be setting myself up for failure with that 210 by Jan 1 thing, but I SO want to weight that amount by that date!  CC says it is impossible, and it probably is, but one can always hope, right?

11/8/07fiber - 36 grams
Well, I managed to get in more fiber, but I went WAY over my calories for the day!  I seem to be doing that a lot lately!  For months, I had no problems staying within my calories levels, or even staying below them, but not in the last few weeks!  I DON'T want to gain any weight back, because I had to work so hard to get it off!  ARGH!

Hello everyone!  Sorry, I've been MIA for a while!  Partially because I've been doing really poorly with the eating, exercising and losing, and didn't want to 'fess up to everyone, and partly because I've been super busy both at work and at home.  I've been working, working, working... and then working some more...
Anyway, sorry for going MIA, I will attempt to do better. For last week's stats, I didn't lose a thing!  I'll enter my inches when I can...
My fiber for yesterday was 20 grams, or so says CC.

I sort of took the weekend off of CC. Sorry!  I didn't even weigh myself this weekend!  <bad, bad me!>  I don't think I've lost anything, though, still feel the same size!  LOL

I did exercise a lot yesterday.   40 minutes of trail riding on a bicycle (I would say mountain biking, but they were only little hils, so...) and 40 minutes of walking!  WooHoo!  Go me!  Of course, I also ate 1/2 of a bourbon steak meal at Applebee's yesterday (don't ya' just love it when you eat out with someone who doesn't mind sharing a meal??? It is great!) so that really hiked my calories.
I am SO envious of alldolledup and coach  I WISH I could loose 3-6 lbs in one week.  This time of year, I'm lucky to loose anything at all.  The colder weather really does a number on me.  Maybe I'm part bear?   I just want to curl up somewhere and hibernate!  LOL (preferably with a good book, on the couch, under a blanket!)
VK - even a little bit counts!  Don't be discouraged!  You're one of our "biggest losers" so keep up the good work!
Foxfire - Great job!  So, what did you do to break the plateau?
Mavschick - just enjoy the  festivities.  Cheesecake Factory is great. They have some fabulous salads.  They also have some great sugar-free cheesecake!
Alldolledup - WOW!  Six lbs in one week!  I am lucky to lose that amount in a month!  The HRM sounds neat, you'll have to keep us updated on the results of wearing one.
Coach - You ROCK!  You passed up your Jan 1 goal already??? Wow!  I am so proud of you!
Blue - that 1/2 lb is probably only water weight. Don't get discouraged!

VK- thanks for the encouragement and the suggestions!  I think you are right. Instead of trying to keep avoiding bread, I should just have a couple of pieces in a sandwich every once in a while.   And baked potatoes seem to satisfy the carb urge, too.
Mavschick - I think it is AWESOME that you are going to go on the 5k fun run!  Sounds like a great way to burn off those extra calories from Thanksgiving!
Blue - great job on walking!   Good luck with having your sister stay with you.  Maybe you can get her to walk too?  I read (somewhere) that walking produces calming endorphins in our brains, so perhaps that might help her a little?

I did manage to walk yesterday for 35 minutes!  WooHooo.  It was too dark to go bikejoring when I had the time, so I had to skip that.

VK - no I did not get any exercise in, except for my 10 minutes of walking the dog, which I have to do each day whether I want to or not.   My schedule is shot!   For the first time in MONTHS I have gone off of the deep end!  Yesterday evening I was such a couch potato!  I did nothing but lay around and watch TV and eat pizza.  My knee/hip was hurting, and so I did nothing.  This morning, I am paying for that pizza. It did not agree with me, since I've been eating so healthy lately!I was pretty confident that I'd be able to keep up my exercise/diet schedule through the winter, but now that the cooler days are here, making it dark when I walk, it seems to be getting harder and harder.  Also, I've been craving carbs, which I haven't done all summer.  I want BREAD!  Hot from the oven yeast rolls... mmmmm.   LOL!   Today I am eating very LIGHT (salad, fruit) to make up for yesterday's calorie glut, and also to try to soothe my stomach.  And I am going to try AGAIN to do my exercise today.
Thanks for asking! It helps me to be accoountable, and perhaps to succeed in the long run!

I think Coach is right. We all need each other on this list if we are going to make our goals!

VK - great job on the cardio!  I don't have anything to add.  I've been really neglecting my exercise...  But, tonight I plan to remedy that with 30 minutes of bikejoring and 30 minutes of walking - maybe I can even sneak in 10 minutes of weight-bearing exercises?

Nikkiddy - CC says that moving boxes  burns 700+ calories and hour! (Does this barn have stairs?  If so, you can add 200 calories an hour to the burn rate!)   So, I'd say you were doing quite a lot!
Sorry to hear that your daughter is sick.

VK - YES!  I can just see the eyes glaze over whenever I mention eating a certain amount of calories, or how many calories certain types of exercise burn.  I actually try NOT to say anything about it anymore, other than "I lost another 2 lbs!" or things of that nature.   But, I know for certain that I need SOMEWHERE to talk about it because it has to be a big part of my life in order for me to continue to lose weight.  So, I'm very, very glad I found CC!

Foxfire - LOL!  Yep, aren't some of the perks of losing weight absolutely FANTASTIC?

Blue - LOL!   I actually CAN'T afford it.  I was just trying them on for the heck of it, and because one of these days I really do need to buy myself some new pants.  All of mine just hang off of me anymore!   What a GREAT feeling!  :)

Coach - Juniors?  Boy do I ever WISH!  LOL!   Maybe someday, right?

Thanks for all the congrats, everyone!  Coach is right, all of the support here just makes a person feel all warm and snuggly!

Thanks for the pointers, VK!   I think you are right about the support that CC offers.   No one in my immediate family/friend circle really wants to talk about my weight loss.  I mean, they are glad I'm losing weight, but they don't really want to talk about it, and they aren't doing it themselves so I feel alone in that aspect sometimes.  It helps to be able to talk about weight loss issues here!    Just going and reading people journals, and their successes, does make a big, big difference.
Speaking of milestones, yesterday I was at the store, and decided to try on some jeans.  I can't remember the last time I tried on clothes on a whim.  Clothes shopping, for me, has not been fun since I am heavy.  Anyway, I went to the "women's" section, and I got the smallest size I could find there in jeans, which was a 16.  And guess what?  THEY WERE TOO BIG!  YaY!  I can't shop in the women's section for jeans anymore - they don't have anything there below a 16!  <happy dance>

VK - wow!  Way to go!  79 lbs?   That is really something.  Keep it up, you are such an inspiration!!!  Care to share any tips?  I'd sure love to hear some!  I have about 70 more I'd like to loose, and my determination is flagging (after only losing 21 lbs since July 3).

Tabbby - are you sure that dropping out is what you need?   I don't think you are causing anyone on this list any problems, but it sounds like you could sure use some support!  Won't dropping out just make you feel worse?  At least on the list, you have us all to cheer you on and encourage you!

Sheesh...  I'm thankful for the loss, I really am, but I seem to loose weight SO SLOWLY.  It drives me crazy.  I had hoped to be at 230 by Oct 1. and it is already Oct. 12, and I'm still 1 lb away!!!!

lumumba - well, I guess at least you had some good news with the other, right? And at least it is supposed to be the "easiest".  Glad to know you are doing ok.
Blue - I actually have 3 big dogs. The third one is 1/2 german shepherd and 1/2 golden retriever.  She's a sweetie, though, and not much trouble at all.  I sort of collect abused dogs... Can't seem to help myself!

Blue - I have a shepherd/husky mix too!   He weighs about the same as yours, and he's 13 years old and very spoiled. He's the one that I have to walk 2-3 times a day because that's the only way he'll go potty (he won't go in our fenced backyard like he's supposed to)!  SPOILED!  I don't take him bikejoring because he's too old, but he would have loved it when he was younger.   Bikejoring can be dangerous, but I also find it invigorating and fun.  I guess it must be the challenge of it that I like?    I didn't break anything last year flying over the handlebars, which is quite lucky!   My Great Dane mix did really well listening to commands last night.  He'd slow down when I told him to and stop when I told him to, and he only saw a cat once!   :)

10-8 - walking 40 minutes, strength training 5 min
10-9 - walking 35 minutes, strenght training 6 minutes, bikejoring 30 minutes (bikejoring is a dog sport, you hook your dog to your bike with a special attachment and leash, and then let him run beside you)
I have a 2 year old 1/2 Great Dane, and boy does he ever like to run!  Even though I walk him almost every night, he never seems to get enough exercise unless I let him run beside me on the bike.  He runs way to fast for me to run beside him!  I haven't done it in about a year.  I didn't have the special attachment and leash last time, and just thought I'd be clever and hold the leash in my hand.  NOT a good idea! He pulled me over the handlebars!  I haven't been brave enough to try it since then!

I got on the scale this morning, just to see if there was any improvement and to my surprise, the scale said I'd lost 1.5 lbs since Friday!  I was very happy with that!   Then, I went to my closet, and pulled out a pair of pants that USED to be too small, and they fit!  They're even a little loose in some areas!  Boy, does that ever feel good!!!!!!!!!!!!!

fatmum - I don't know if they have farmer's markets where you live in New Zealand, but here fruits and veggies are really reasonable at the farmer's markets when they're in season. I've been gettting lots of fruits and veggies all summer long from the farmer's markets and it has been pretty cheap!  An added benefit of buying from our local farmer's market is that the produce is mostly organic!   I know what you mean though, about having to cut way back on grocery money. It does stink!   Potatoes, beans, rice, frozen veggies and whole grain flour are all pretty cheap around here, so when my budget is tight, my family eats a lot of these foods.  Also, you might check around to see if there is a local cheap source of eggs.  I can buy free-range hormone-free organic eggs from a local supplier REALLY cheaply!

Walking: 10 minutes
VK - those migraines are AWFUL aren't they?   Glad you are feeling better now!  Congrats on the loss, even a little counts!
Coach - Congrats on the loss!  Is plantar fascitis that awful heel pain?  I used to have that, and if I do not walk every day, it comes back!!!  My husband bought me some really good walking shoes, and they have helped quite a bit.
Blue - I'm with you!  Wah!  But even though we didn't loose, at least we didn't gain, right?
Fox - Wow!  Great job! Congrats on the loss!
Alldolledup - you lost too!  Good job!
Mavschick - Congrats!  (What sort of scale do you have?  Mine only measures by half-pound increments!)

I am starting to get a bit concerned that I will not meet my Jan 1 goal.  I've put in my Nov 15 goal as 220, but CC tells me I won't reach that one until Jan 2!!!!  ARGH.  Time to ramp up the calorie burning, I guess!

I only managed to walk 40 minutes yesterday, but I did go shooting (pistol & rifle) for an hour (which CC says burns 240 calories) so I'm not too disappointed in my calorie expenditure for the day.   We did target shooting, and it was surprisingly fun!  (Maybe that's because I was beating the pants off of everyone else shooting down the targets!)  I was shooting a .357 Magnum most of the time, and my wrists are a little sore today!
