Weight Loss I feel like I will never lose those last 10 :o( Aug 19 2009

Hey chickie. I am 5'5 and three quarters.. and I'm about 151 now.  I'm usually 145-146 and I do NOT get any lower than 144 without starving / obsessing over food all day / working out like a fiend.

I have a larger frame, and I just - like you said - don't think my body is meant to get lower than the mid 140s.  I've tried everything - it just doesn't happen for me, sooooo my conclusion is..

I just try to look the best for my weight.  If that means lifting more, killing my ab muscles constantly - then so be it!  My goal is hardbodied, not skinny!

Hope this helps :)

Azule - very cool that your husband is supportive to you no matter WHAT!  I think we are both very lucky :)  We'll always have that, whether we're a little heavier or a little lighter that day/month/year!

4Sparta - very funny lol!

Hey, KBella - thanks for the tip on the beach! Maybe it ISNT so ridiculous after all!  I love how you said "break from reality" -- very funny.

Haunted:  I agree that confidence is part of sexiness!  Unfortunately I think I appear confident to everyone BUT my husband, because he gets to hear the stuff I don't tell everyone else (i.e. no one else who knows me would have a CLUE that I think about my weight this frequently!).  Good point.

Also - I love the question you posed on the _alternative_!  Yikes - I would NOT want a dieting zealot for a spouse / someone tearing snacks out of my hand!  LOL.  I guess I have it pretty good :)

Hmm, perhaps that is why my weight seems like it's distributed differently... Less in the tummy more in the legs.  Eeeenteresting!

THanks for the quick response!

Yeah I'm just annoyed that I have to get back to the whole weighing / counting thing.  On the upside, with all the cardio I'm doing now I think the lbs will probably come off more quickly.

We shall seeee...

Thanks too for the note about feeling good about yourself.. It's so true!  Thanks for the pick me up :)

Motivation Being called "thick" a compliment?? Jul 09 2009
22:02 (UTC)

A LONG time ago when I was about 16... 5'6 and probably around 140... A guy I worked with at a restaurant described me to another employee and I heard him.. He said, "Oh that girl Dana yeah she's built like a tank!"

I cried!

Now, more than 10 years later (about same weight plus 5ish but mroe muscle) it cracks me up, because well.. I AM built like a tank!  I'm training to run a half-marathon, have been workign out since I was 17... Do yoga (almost mastering headstand! Flying crow is childs play)... And I'm never broken or busted.. Always power through my workouts, and I think I look great!  No I will never be slight, or petite, but who the hell cares.  Strength and "studiness" - thick, whatever... Us thick chicks (built like a tank.. whatever the term) We can get **** DONE!

Thanks everyone!

I am feeling a lot better.  I have logged everything today and will log my exercise as well.  I like the idea of "starting from scratch," because that's all it really is, isn't it?  The weight I lost or gained years ago has nothing to do with the weight I put on in the past month.  It's all new.. so it needs a new perspective.

No lemonade diet for me... :) THanks all! I love my CC Buds.

 FYI.. today:

Breakfast: 0% fage greek yogurt w 1/4 cup blueberries, 1/4 cup fit granola

Snack: Banana

Lunch: 1 cup brown rice (steamed), 2 cups steamed veggies, 1 cup steamed chicken, 2 tbsp no sodium chicken-based sauce.

I think many, MANY of us (myself included) have experienced what you're going through.  But the important thing to consider is:

What were you doing for the past year that made you gain the weight? Were you binging, or just not watching and letting it creep back on.. Did you leave the gym?  Were you sad and eating comfort food?

Like you said, it will be key to find the reason behind what you were doing, so that you're much less likely to repeat it!

It's Spring / Summer now, so perfect time to get back on the horse, get outside and turn those 16 lbs into a distant memory!!  :) Good luck ---Dana

I go to the gym at lunch 4x a week. I love it.  I just eat lunch at my desk while working, afterward.  You can do yoga, and light cardio so you don't have to shower... or do a heavy cardio and do a quick shower afterward, just bring a shower cap.

It really helps my energy level too!

I also have shopped and put all my week long groceries in the work fridge at the start of each week so I don't have to worry about bringing lunch AND workout clothes every day en route to work!

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the replies!

I agree that we're going to have to settle on using our eyes.. But if I found out my body fat is STILL 30%, I might be inclined to say no a bit more often to splurge items... Maybe add some more intervals into my workout.  If I'm in a healthy range, I would view myself in more of a maintenance / slow improvement mode and keep on my current track!

The two things that mystify me are: body fat percentage and credit score!  Everyone tells you something different :)

Stevia isn't nearly as sweet as splenda (as you most likely know, artificial sweeteners - splenda included - are WAY sweeter than sugar)... It's a different sort of taste.  It's sweet, but not as in-your-face sweet.  I have found it in my local grocery stores now next to the sugar and equal and all that.  Whole Foods definitely has it if you don't see it in your regular food store.  Hope you like it!

There's also a stevia product called Truvia, which is apparently made from the highest quality parts of the Stevia plant and is a little more similar in texture to granulated sugar than regular Stevia (which can tend to clump).  Good luck eating clean, I have been meaning to do this too!

Hey Jenn,

I'm going to a registered dietician right now who tells me that the body's metabolism is HIGHLY elevated an hour after finishing a workout.  She says it's really important to eat a balanced snack or meal (depending on time of day) in this hour timeframe in order to to refuel (bring blood sugar back up), and to encourage muscle repair.  Of course it also depends what you're doing, so for my heavy lifting days I make my snack/meal more high in protein.. For cardio days I opt for a little less protein, maybe a little more complex carb.  But regardless you should eat within that hour to maximize your revved up metabolism.

In fact, she told me that if you were to take your normal workout (say.. an hour on your bike) and break it into two separate workouts (half hour in a.m and half hour p.m), then even that would be advantageous bc you would benefit from that metabolism rate burst TWICE per day not just once.

Hope this helps!  --Dana

I don't agree with this either (your poor body is starved for vitamins/minerals and not to mention FIBER! I think many of us did Atkins in 2001!).  But.. I can't help but point out.. Milk and yogurt both contain naturally occurring sugar.  Odd you would permit those but not nuts.  Some yogurts have 20 g sugar in half a cup.

Good luck with your crazy diet....  I will say that yeah you will probably drop weight FAST for the short term.  Like, if I had a dress to fit into in 4 days or something and HAD to drop weight quickly I would probably restrict carbs just to drop water weight on the fly.  But.... as a life decision.. bad bad bad!  God help you when you touch carbs again though...  You'll feel like you're on the world's fastest weight-gain program.  :(

Why don't you try something you can incorporate into your lifestyle, for the rest of your life?  Why need for the quick-fix?  If there were a quick fix this site wouldn't even be here! (or in your case, it would be called CarbCount.com not CalorieCount!).

We are not purely carnivorous , Happyface, or we'd all have a mouth full of fangs!  Your molars are there to crunchedy crunch on fruits and veggies and grains!  C'monnnn Now! --Dana

Hi Amanda,

Have you taken measurements at all?  Have you noticed a change there?

What about body fat, have you had that measured at all with either of your trainers?

DON'T GIVE UP.  You do NOT want to _gain_ right now, especially not how you're feeling and with what you've been doing.

Have you worked with a nutritional counselor or dietician?  I've done this a few different times to evaluate my diet for different purposes.. Once my goal was losing weight, then running a 10 m race, now it's building muscle.. So needs can really vary depending on what you're doing at the time.  You should check it out!

Don't give up!!

I chew gum a lot lately to avoid this same affliction!

I realized I just want something to do with my teeth, haha.  It's been working well so far, just keep gum around.  Then an hour goes by and you're like omg I can't believe I still have this gum!  And you forget about the food thoughts.

Also, there's a book called Mindless Eating (go figure!) that delves into why people eat when they aren't hungry.  It's a good read.  Some of it is common sense but other stuff is pretty enlightening :)

I'm a big fan of the Cuisinart Griddler!  It's great for turning standard sandwiches, wraps into delicious melty goodness!  And everyone eating healthy knows it's key to maximize on taste and flavor.

It has a panini grill option AND a griddle option, which is nice for making breakfast when guests are over and you need more cooking surface/space.

Weight Loss do you think the size of your friends influences your weight? Mar 16 2009

The worst EVER is having skinny friends who don't work at it.  You see them in their size 4s eating nachos and fries and drinking beer.

Then you end up feeling fat (bc you're bigger than them) and BEING fat, since you're going out to eat and hanging out with them.. feeling silly eating healthy since they can obviously get away with it...

Good post, very interesting.

Weight Loss Why do I struggle with self esteem more now that I am at my goal weight? Mar 16 2009

I was kind of thinking along these same lines today.  I've been in a rut (lose 5, gain it back, etc) trying to get these last 8 lbs off.  I was wondering why one year ago when I got to the weight I am now, I was ecstatic and felt GREAT!  Now, after having been at that weight (and lower, and back to it, and lower.. you get the idea) for a year, I'm "over it" and feel chunky again.

I seriously think sometimes it's just a symptom of too much spare time.  This time last year it was already warm out here, I was running around doing all kinds of things.. This year it still hasn't gotten that warm... Cabin fever = obsessive brain.  Too bad I don't get obsessed over something like, oh I don't know.. Cleaning my house... Doing extra well at work.. etc!  My brain just hangs in a state of food / weight thoughts :(

Keep us posted on how you overcome this!

Hi there, I've worked with one before (he was 30 bucks for 45 minutes), and now I've started with another at a different gym.  The one I have now was voted Best in the City, so he's significantly more expensive... 90 bucks an hour (less if you buy in packs).  It's amazing though.  He has never left me alone on a machine - everythign is super hands-on and you can't even TRY to cheat an inch on anything bc he'll catch you right away and call you out on it!

I like it a lot just for the HUGE increase in strength. I've also gotten the caliper-testing done once at the start and once two weeks ago (so.. about 5 weeks in), and I lost inches everywhere.

I love mixing things up and learning new exercises.  I have a killer hardbody goal to meet by May when I get married and go to Greece for my honeymoon! After that I"ll probably cut down to once a week or something.  It's so fun though, i Love it!!

I would definitely go to 2-3 trainers for "initial" sessions to see if you like their style /energy, etc.

Good luck!

You guys should totally post in the fitness forum.  You'll get a lot more responses on specific exercises..

That being said, though.. Does your gym offer aerobics classes?  You could check them out, but go early and tell the instructor that you're a beginner and that you would like some tips on how to do the basic moves.  ANy good instructor will be happy to show you how to safely go about doing any of the exercises he/she teaches in class.

Good luck!

Motivation Yikes...a child in my daughters class called me fat Mar 10 2009

My friend's kids get a huge kick out of saying that people have "big butts".. They're little, and what they mean is.. a bigger butt than THEIRS (they're about 5 years old!).  So, pretty much anyone older than a 5 year old ends up hearing that they have a big butt, regardless of whether or not it's legitimately big in proportion to their body.

So, fat to this kid could mean more than HE weighs.. or it could mean he figured out at this early age how to push a woman's buttons, but has no clue what "fat" really looks like.. nor does he care!

Or, if you're really pissed, just send your daughter to school with cupcakes for him every day.  Soon he'll know what fat is!  HAHAHAHA, I'm evil.  Is that bad?  LOL.

I say tell yourself that if you go for 20 minutes, and you're STILL tired, then let yourself leave after that.  At least you got 20 minutes in!  Most of the time, though, when I use this strategy, after 20 minutes I end up feeling pretty darn good, so I end up staying an hour anyways :)

Oh yes.. there were wine pairings, hehehe.. And I did partake!

Well.. I ended up just throwing caution to the wind.  The menu was:

Scallop escabeche with fennel (amazing!)

House made tortellini w local ricotta cheese, lemon, toasted butter (only 3 of them .. very light and amazing).

Braised rack of lamb (small portion was served) with house made lamb and pork sausage (still a small portion.. yum)

And a peach crisp with home made cinnamon ice cream.. Which i ate :)

I didn't feel full afterward though, bc each dish was quite small. I had a great time, and don't feel TOO guilty (though the wine could have been avoided). IT was awesome.. Got to meet the chef.. Super, super cool, and very much worth it!
