heres some ideas i have gotten from studying and watching people who went from chubbier/fat to extremely fit/muscular (and that have also worked on me): 1. eat ALOT of protein and have protein shakes. the better the quality of the protein, the better results you will see. 2. restrict carbs a little (dont go overboard on the restriction) and try to eat most of it during the day 3. dont reduce your calorie intake too much and workout a hell of alot. what will happen is that you will actually start to see the scale move down but your clothes will get tighter. what happens is that your body starts to eat muscle and pack on fat. overtraining and eating very little doesnt help at all. ive been there and was super confused until i sat down and calculated how much i was in the gym vs. how much i was eating. 4. eat rediculously clean, eat 5-6 small meals and make 2 of those protein shakes (only if you weight train). i know its hard...but its not going to be forever. 5. weight training is key. you may reduce your size with just aerobics and dieting, but weight training will help tone you, increase your metabolism and give you the shape you want. it will help u make it to your overall goal. 6. keep the discipline. remember your goal. nobody said it was going to be easy or we would all be hella fit! |

i think the combo of sodium + pasta could be a HUGE reason you didnt see a change this week. i always weigh myself in the morning and when my trainer weighs me in the noon with my clothes on i get mortified with the weight gain. i like your idea of weighing at the heaviest so you dont set your mind up for failure...i tend to do that alot! the last couple of pounds are so brutal! hang in there, the 7lbs will drop off with dedication and hard work. i find that my diet has to be super tight in order to get to that - no processed foods. BUT i have ice cream everynight..i dont care what happens i cant live without my icecream... :) |

Original Post by dirktwolf: you basically start at the roots and massage the oil as needed into your hair to get it "wet". if your sleeping with it, its better if you can wrap it in a thin cotton to get excess oil from getting on your pillow. then wash it out in the morning with your regular shampoo. i suggest you pay special attention to massaging your scalp and making sure the ends of your hair have soaked up the oil. |

krazykim - LOL yeah if i was a size 2 i wouldnt be here...i would be out eating cake to celebrate! lol..i think with my hips (pear shape) i wouldnt be able to get any lower than a 4 if i was a twig (which i dont want to be!). about weighing in at the gym, its usually a couple of pounds more b/c of the food you ate prior to going there, as well as the weight of your workout clothes, unless its exctly how you usualy weigh yourself ( i do it in the morning, naked after going to the bathroom - and when i weigh at the gym im at least 4 lbs heavier) im also continuing my weight loss after the wedding and continue until june (which is when im going to my honeymoon) and the goal date on CC says june1st to get to my goal. its going to b very difficult b/c South Asian weddings are 3-4 day long parties with rediculousy good food ill weigh in today b/c i just weighed myself: last week: 120 lb this week: 119 lb i thought i was more since im on my period (hence water weight) and ive been eating everything in sight (ice cream everyday, sushi binge as usual) i think this forum has died a slow death!

since you complain your hair is dry, do what Indians do (and they have crazy curly/frizzy hair to tame as well) and oil your hair at least once a week. i recommend coconut oil or almond oil. leave it in overnight and w ash it out in the morning. your hair will be alot softer. if you do this enough times, you will see a difference in your scalp and hair. about the sticky thing - this sounds odd...go to a doctor or see someone specializing in curly hair. every city usually has specialized salons that deal with curly hair...do some research.

just weighing in for the thread: last week: 121lb this week: 120lb (i guess my clothes fit better for a reason!) i havent taken my measurements yet..for some reason i do it on fridays :p im guessing ive gone done a 1/4'' here and there esp my thighs ...im guessing not more than an inch or 2 total around my body since im already smaller...its sooo slow and frustrating sometimes.. BUT i did go shopping yesterday for honeymoon clothes (summery stuff and some dressy dresses) and i was ecstatic to fit into zara's size xs! the jeans are around a comfy size 6 .. which i was a yr ago before i gained weight but this time around i can wear tighter clothes and not have much muffin top spillage like i used to (i got crazy love handles going on thanks to my moms genetics!) ...so def changes are happening. its hard b/c im getting married in 3 weeks and i have to buy clothes now, not when im done training a couple of days b4 my wedding...so if i drop inches the clothes might b baggier ok ill be back to respond... i have a makeup trial and im still in a towel from the shower! i hope she doesnt make me look like a drag queen...

| Weight Loss | Gaining muscle but not losing fat? | Apr 22 2009 00:41 (UTC) |

when i started my diet a couple of years ago, at about 159-161 on my 5'5 small frame, i was put on a 1450 cal diet and basically what i did was weight training 3x week for a long period of time (1 hour) so one day it was upper body, one day lower body and last was mixed very intense cardio/weights (circuit training)...ontop of this, i did cardio as much as i could without fatigue...so around 3-5 x a week a minimum of 30 mins. it worked for me and over time i dropped my body fat about 10% and increased my strength like crazy. i think you might be overdoing it on the # of times you do weights a week and you really need to cut it down and spend more time in one sitting isolating muscle groups. In addition, you can lift weights all you want, but you n eed cardio to burn the fat....! |

krazykim - honestly, thats so weird. yesterday i was soooo uncontrollably hungry. the day before we had a party at the house and someone decided to bring over my favorite desert in the world - tiramisu....which i began to eat uncontrollably. so i said, monday i will be very good. so monday comes along and hitting about 2 pm until i fall asleep i was so disgustingly hungry no matter what i ate. but heres the trick -- when i eat really high levels of protein, i NEVER feel hungry between meals. this is when i eat as many grams of protein as my body weight, so about 120g protein b/c im around 120 lb. the way i do that is for lunch and dinner i make HUGE salads and i broil 8 ounce peice of pink fish like salmon or rainbow trout. trust me, it will be hard to finish that meat and by the end of that and the salad, you wont think about food until dinner where you will make another huge ass salad which a hunk of meat (i find things like ahi tuna, lean steaks like sirloin, or more fish, work REALLY well). these days i havent ate that much protein, hence my hunger. try it for a day and see if that might work for you. it helped me drop tons of weight, put on alot of muscle and curb the appetite while i was doing high levels of exercise. oh ya, i always eat off other peoples plates - but thats an ethnic thing..we share food. i know italians an greeks probably do the same! so who cares what your friend said.... never take what others say to heart...everyone thinks differently... and you cant change that...just be your beautiful self :) sometimes shrugging your shoulders at what people think makes you a happier person. OR you can tell me where this friend lives and i can go kick her ass for you :) lol
longg story short - im weighing in tomorrow but since ive been battling the scale to get below 121lb i dont really care to be honest...my clothes r slipping off me, my silhouette is geting more streamlined and i can feel muscle in places i never thought i could build muscle....so if that means i cant get to my goal of 113 lbs, but stay at 121lb and look even better than who gives a crap! im beginning to realize the numbers dont mean anything and that i put on muscle faster than the average woman...which is good cuz i can eat more sushi.. bahahaha.

| Weight Loss | Could I be loosing more? | Apr 20 2009 16:01 (UTC) |

1200 calories is not suitable for you, its way too low and is probably a big reason your not losing like you were before. although as you lose weight, you should compensate by reducing your calorie intake, i think 1400-1500 might be a better fit for you (not 100%). when i was about 150 ish i ate around 1450 to lose, and i only reduced to 1250 -1300 now when im at 120 ish lb. if you weigh more, you need to eat a little more. also, as you lose weight, you may want to consider upping your activity level by including some cardio & strength training. its really easy to hit walls when you lower your weight but dont compensate by increasing intensity on cardio. the smaller you get, the harder it is to get the weight to move. hope that helped :) |

krazykim - great weight loss. i love spinning but i do classes. do you check your burn on the bike? i wa surprised when i got a heart rate monitor that was burning ~450 cals for a 45 min class... be careful on the readouts on the machines they either over or underestimate...they have neverrr been accurate for me. amcm - wow 3 pounds is awesome :) and i do workout like almost everyday of the week....i dont enjoy it...i find it a means to an end and something that i have to do if i want something, which is being healthy |

Original Post by lostlittlerabbit: sure! hers the recipe (it serves 3) 1 tbsp melted butter 2 tsp ginger-garlic paste 1-3 green chili's, minced (1 if you dont want it too spicy, 3 if you like it hot) 1/4 tsp red chili powder (do not substitute with paprika) 1/2 tsp garam masala 1 big (black) cardamom 2 green cardamom 1 inch peice of cinnamon (stick) 1 bay leaf 3 large tomatoes, pureed (i used canned tomatoes, which are small romas, so i use about 6 small ones with a little juice, and i puree it) 1 tsp sugar 1/2 cup half and half 1 tbsp dried methi leaves (kasoori methi) <-- do not leave out..it makes the dish about 250 g paneer, cut into cubes i dont marinate the paneer in tikka spices like you would with butter chicken because the butter chicken sauce is so awesome, it doesnt need it to be honest. plus it would add more calories which you dont want. If you want to sub with chicken, use thighs (they are more moist, and marinate whatever amount you want with 1 tbsp lemon juice, however amount chili powder you can handle, 1/2 cup yogurt and 2 tsp tandoori masala powder and about 2 tsp ginger-garlic paste -- then broil in the oven until done) 1. heat the butter and fry both cardamoms, bay leaf and cinnamon stick until the bay leaf changes to a brown color. 2. add the ginger-garlic paste and green chilis and fry for 30 seconds 3. add the tomato sauce, red chili powder and the garam masala and enough salt to your own taste. when the sauce comes to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for about 7-10 mins until it thickens slightly 4. add the sugar, methi leaves and cook a couple more minutes 6. add the paneer and mix well but make sure you mix lightly so the paneer doesnt break 7. add the half and half, let it come to a boil, taste it and adjust salt or spices. remember, whenever you add something, allow it to come to a boil first before turning off the heat 8. eat it! its good over rice or eat with naan (i use whole wheat pita bread to control calorie consumption)

congrats everybody! im glad everyone is doing so well. topazie - no way in hell you gained 4 lbs of fat in a day. it will be a combo of the food still in your system, that your retaining water, and maybe a slight gain depending on how much you ate. i havent weighed in today...have been sick the last several days..i tried to get ambitious and do some cardio today....suffice to say im now bed ridden after that attempt..lol. i got really sick of the foods i was eating which was usually a hunk of protein with a little carbs and salads and tons of fruit. i always find north american food easier to handle when dieting but its hard to eat b/c im used to heavy heavy spices in my foods. i have been cooking unconventional "diet" foods like paneer makhani (like butter chicken but using paneer) and oddly enough stayed within my calorie and fat intake for the day. im going to keep making indian food since it kind of wakes up the taste buds and if you control the oil/buter/cream in the foods yourself, it tastes just as good as restaurant but can fit it into your diet. ok time to pass out in my bed again. good luck everybody! |

Original Post by coreyander: i agree with you coreyander, and it was the reason i posted what i did. ive read many studies that show lower income neighborhoods have many disadvantages with respect to access to fresher and cheaper produce. there are also instances where in higher income neighborhood, there are more grocery store per number of people than in low income neighborhoods (which had more fast food chains) |

having taught elementary school, the answer is quite simple: - wealthier families sent cut up fruits and veggies with their kids - less wealthy families packed junk food - which is obviously cheaper than fresh produce i made this observation in different schools in different income level neighborhoods the staff room is pretty horrible too - fridays its usually full of coffee cakes, donuts, dips, chips, pizza. almost all the teachers were overweight. |

honestly...im the last person to harp on someone for their weight loss goals, but ashleyyy, thats going a bit far. we are all saying this out of concern, not to piss you off or turn on you. im 2 inches shorter than you, small frame and i couldnt even dream of going that low without being sick. if you dont like your appearance, you may want to try gaining muscle. it does a world of difference for your body! what you mentioned about your calorie limit being small, i hope it wont be under the minimum 1200 cals......! |

Original Post by allibugg: 1) make sure your eating enough 2) throw out potential foods you know you cant control yourself around (mine is chips and chocolate) 3) dont go too long between meals without having a snack (even carrot sticks help, watermelon is filling, etc) 4) always plan out your meals. this will ensure you dont panic at 8 pm when you dont hve anything to eat and go "oh well" and grab something unhealthy. stock that fridge for the week! 5) ask yourself if the food is worth the crappy feeling afterward...usually it isnt! |

buttonsxandxbows - 3-4 weeks? wow no wonder your frustrated. when i started my weight loss thing about 5 weeks ago, i didnt see any loss for the first few weeks, and then bam, it all fell off within a week and a half....did you check your measurements instead of the weight? maybe they r going down bluecolors - i think stress can affect weight in the sense that we tend to make poor choices. some deal with stress by rewarding themselves with fattier foods b/c they feel like it was an accomplishment to get through the day. others lose their appetite and dont eat at all. but im no scientist :P krazy kim - you may want to keep a measurement diary..i keep one, so when i gain weight or i dont budge, i take my measurements and see if theres any change there...it can save you from feeling miserable! im pretty sure 1 lb is pretty damn good of a loss in anyones eyes! congrats hakusaki - welcome. 1100 calories is not good! i know courtneylauren is going to be all over this :) comeonnn tell her something you always have some great advice. well i would say try to get your minimum 1200 cals in, and if your stuffed, you should try using olive oil in your cooking to increase the cals, or put peanut butter on your toast...something calorie dense.
TODAY IS MY WEIGH IN -- so i have gained back all the weight i have lost. in the last week..so im at 120 (up to from 118) BUT i did whip out my measuring tape, and in most areas im exactly the same as i was at 118, but a tad smaller in my hips and my thighs, so it was muscle gain (thanks to my crazy trainer who is on heavy-weights mode). The only reason im upset is because i have a bet with my fiance that i would be 113 by our wedding day (may 15th) and whoever wins our weight loss bet (he has to lose a certain amount too), gets to spend $1000 of the wedding money on a new wardrobe, shoes, whatever we want. i know if i wasnt gaining muscle i would totally get there, but im actually happier gaining muscle (meaning i can eat more) and your body looks more sculpted...but the money could have bought me tonsssss of shoes! |
