Foods Canned veggies vs Fresh Nov 14 2009

Fresh.  Without a doubt.  And if organic, even better, as you want your veggies free of pesticides as much as possible.  As far as canned, yes, high sodium content, not to mention the cans can be lined with BPA, and other chemicals that are harmful to your body.  If you are looking for convenience and something to last longer, I suggest organic frozen vegetables.

Foods Health Food...or Health Fraud? Nov 08 2009

This is also why 90% of my food supply is organic.  After reading and studying reports of how corporate greed in this country adds chemicals, preservatives, and claims it's healthy, when in reality, it's making us sicker.  I don't trust most of the things out there.  And, definitely read those labels.  What's on the front of the package, is entirely different on the side of the package!

Guilty as charged.  I'm taking it right now.  I'm also taking her fat burner too.  I know, I know, these are junk, but I've been frustrated with my weight loss stall, plus I just got off of vacation, and I'm eating clean, organic, no processed foods, and 2 workouts a day 3 days a week with a total of 5 days a week, but I just want a jumpstart, gimmick or no gimmick.  Even if it's a bottle of expensive placebos, I think it will help me in my mind.  So far, I have had no stomach problems, no jitters or nothing.  So we'll see.  Maybe she did sell out, who knows, but I would hope, her of all people, if she's going to put her name on something, she will want it to be a good product.

No one here needs to call the airline "stupid".   I'm tired of that.  Every passenger is accounted a weight of 194 lbs, whether you weigh 350, or 95.  It's a damn safety issue.  Alright?  It has nothing to do with discrimination.  Every RULE the airline comes up with is because of SAFETY!  SAFETY!  SAFETY!  SAFETY!  YOUR SAFETY!

Health & Support Generic Birth control options? Esp. for Loestrin 24 FE? Mar 29 2009
00:29 (UTC)

Just be careful with generic birth control.  I have a friend whose a chiropractor, and was very careful about taking b/c.  She is now 6 months pregnant, and she was taking a generic, (I don't know the kind she was on) but turns out the pills weren't 100% like they have stated.  Years ago, Cosmo had an article that said even though generics are supposed to be the same as the brand name, they can have altercations.  Do you REALLY want to save a few bucks?  I mean you never know.  I've been taking Ortho-Cept Brand name for 15 years.  It costs me $50/month, but I figure that's a freaking bargain compared to having an "oops".  I will never ever ever take a generic birth control, but I don't mind taking a generic ibuprofen.

Weight Loss Cutting carbs to break through plateau? Mar 22 2009

Funny you mentioned it, I was thinking the same thing as you.  I cut carbs down to 25% of my intake, hoping that would get me to lose MY last 5-6 lbs as well, and NOTHING.  However, I do like the way I look in the mirror, I notice my muscle definition better, although my clothes don't fit me any better, which I cannot understand why.  Also, I have a cheat day once a week, with cocktails, and before, I cut out carbs, I would pay the price of being bloated all day the next day, and the one thing I've noticed, is I'm not, I repeat, not bloated the next day, so I don't know!  But, overall, it doesn't seem to work much.  I'm also the same as you, I was increasing my calories, and I had gained too, hoping I could be one of the lucky ones and eat more and lose, but nope!  I've been at a loss, I wish I could just ask my body, what it is exactly I need to do to lose those last few lbs.  Because I'm tired of guessing.  I also do HIIT 4 days a week.  Hang in there though, and you could try it, it may work for you.

Me too.  We vacation all the time too.  What I do, is eat perfect for about 2 weeks prior, exercise like a fiend, and have fun when we go.  And no matter what I do, I always come home about 5 lbs heavier.  I've learned to not even weigh myself when I come home.  It's too upsetting.  What I do though is immediately get back on track.  I take 10 days to 2 weeks without a cheat day.  I lose it all back again.  Counterproductive?  Maybe.  But, I go on vacation to have fun.  No stress.  I'm not going to stress out about counting calories.  I do that 24/7 when I'm not on vacation.  I love life, and I want to look good livin' it.  Oh, and I love food.  I love cocktails!  I've never counted calories on vacation, I don't go to the gym, but I do try and do active things, like swimming, dancing, walking on the beach, or walk everywhere!

I agree it is frustrating, as someone who works in the airline industry, it is a sensitive subject.  While I don't work for Southwest, I do know why they have their policy.  The airline I work for is, our policy is, if you still don't fit in the seat WITH the seatbelt extension, then you have to buy another seat.  But the MAIN reason why they do charge for an additional seat, is because of safety.  It's weight and balance.  Each person is accounted for 195 lbs.  And the FAA has gradually increased that over the years.  In the winter, they add an extra 5 lbs for additional clothing.  Each person has to have a number attached to them, to know what is safe for that airplane to take off.  Each person, plus 30lbs of carry-ons, plus cargo, and most importantly, the fuel.  They take these numbers, plus the runway, weather, and take-off conditions to make sure it is safe to fly.  There have been several times, we have to bump people off due to being "weight critical"  Sometimes it's because we require more fuel to get to our destination because of bad weather, and we need additional fuel to divert to an alternate.  But like I said, it's due to weight and balance.  Safety.  I don't know if that's not what you want to hear, but it's true.

This is not the only thing I've noticed a calorie change.  Several of my favorite Lean Cuisines have changed as well!  I'm bummed out too!  Now, if I have them, I hesitate a little more, because the calories count is much higher.  For example, the Macaroni and Beef used to be a simple 250, now it's 300.  Some of the pizzas were around 280, and now they're like 310-320.  I wonder what had happened, and I wonder if it was incorrect all along?

Health & Support Does fat retain more water than muscle? Jan 13 2009
02:49 (UTC)

That's a proven fact.  I'm proof.  Years ago, when I had originally lost weight, I would have one cheat day, and the next day, no consequences.  Looked fine, felt fine.  Now, over the years, I've lost more fat, and gained a lot more muscle through years of strength training.  Now, I pay a huge price from having a cheat day and especially having drinks.  I'm bloated the next day, and look awful, with a mushy, cellulitey, belly.  Hate it.  I'm glad I put on all the muscle, but I hate the effects of cheat day, due to muscle hanging on to all the water it possibly can.

Weight Loss Off the bandwagon, feel horrible, need a detox Sep 26 2008
01:58 (UTC)

Don't feel too bad, but I can't say that, because I do the same thing!  When I have a week like that, I easily gain 5 pounds.  It sucks, because I will workout and eat right so good 2 weeks prior, lose maybe 2 lbs?, then way up after.  Then it takes me about 2 weeks to get back on track.  What I do is eat right, drink tons of water, get back to working out bootcamp style (if possible).  What I have learned is that your body has an amazing memory of where it should be.  I can never break 115 lbs.  I can lose 3-4 below that, it lasts for a day, and when I go on trips like you, I gain 5-7 lbs!  But no matter what, no matter what, it will eventually find it's way back to 115.  So, I guess, in retrospect, I have to come to accept that weight.  Your body will find it's way back too.  Bottom line, I bet you had fun, and you enjoyed life, and I think it's imperative to enjoy life and food and drink once in awhile!  Because now, I bet you're CRAVING nutritional foods, and exercise!  I know I always do.

Weight Loss "Cheat" Days? Sep 14 2008

I'm logging my cheat day from yesterday right now!  And I hate doing it.  But I've noticed when I have a cheat day, I sometimes end up logging up to 4000 calories!  But I look forward to it, I do it mostly once a week, to every other week.  Most of those calories are from beer.  And I do pay for it the next day.  Ever since I have put on muscle mass, I get more bloated the following day.  It's my punishment I guess.  But it's my lifestyle, and I enjoy it.  I enjoy life.  But, like other posters have said, you have to do what works for you.  For me, to have a cheat day, it's SO easy for me to get back on track today.  All I crave for the next week is health food, and eating right, and exercising.

Motivation Airplane Seats Aug 28 2008

If you are traveling this week, chances are the flights will be fairly light.  Right after Labor Day, there is a period, where the flights aren't full.  Knowing that, I am not sure what airline you are flying, but most of them when you check in, you can pick your seat.  You can look for where there is an empty seat next to you.  Or you can ask the customer service agent at the gate if there are any empty rows.

Also, I don't know how long your flight is, you can go to Seatguru.com.  Knowing the exact aircraft you will be flying (which you can find on the airline's website) this site will tell you what seats to avoid and what seats are the best.  Translation - what seat will be the roomiest and most comfortable.

But your best chance is to have an empty seat next to you.  As far as the extender, the FA's will be happy to accomodate you discreetly, and Mollymouse is right.  If you need an extender you can't sit in the exit row.  This is due to entanglement issues and therefore slow the progress of a quick evacuation if need be.

Enjoy your trip!  You'll have a blast!

Thanks, guys!  I did workout shortly before I came home and got dressed.  I can't believe I didn't think of that!  I did the stepmill for 50 minutes today on the fatburn mode at levels 6,7,8, and 9.  It's grueling, but that makes perfect sense.

I fly 3-4 days a week for my job as a flight attendant, and I pack a soft sided lunch cooler with me.  I pack it with ice packs, and when those melt, I use an ice pack you can fill with ice and it does not leak.  Those you can find in the first aid section at Wal-Mart.  And I pack chicken breasts, avocado, celery, bell peppers, fruits, I ration out a can of black beans in smaller containers, I cut up strawberries, I boil eggs for egg whites, I pack oatmeal, soup, yogurt, apples, oranges, carrots, hummus, etc.  You name it.  You just have to be creative.  Every hotel has a microwave you can use.  Sometimes they will even give you a room with a fridge and a microwave.  You can cut anything with a plastic knive.  I haven't eaten out in 4 years.  It can be done.  You will not only save a ton of money, but you will lose the weight.  I'm not as social with my crews because of this but they understand.  Anyway, the more you do it, the more creative you will become.  It's literally become a "part-time" job for me to keep up with my food, but it's worth it!

Thanks coach_k.  I think I have read that some time ago, but that's one of those articles you need around to read again and again, to make you feel a little better, and remind you of what it could be.  Some of those factors it mentions,(most of those factors!) could be whats contributing to my number on the scale.

Mortalmonkey, I'm glad I just read your post.  I just stepped off the scale, and the last couple weeks, my weight trend is going the wrong way!  It's like it's creeping up, and I'm doing what I've always done to help me lost the weight.  TMI, but it is a week before TOTM, but, still.  Very frustrating.  I did eat mass amounts of fiber this week, and it may not all be out of my system, too.  I sometimes think I have this pattern you do, too. It's good to hear we are not alone.

Weight Loss I've been eating healthy and working out but I gained weight. Why? Jul 16 2008

This happened to me to this week.  Sometimes I will have a cheat day or two, (if I'm out of town for a mini vacation,) so then I go for like 10 days to 2 weeks without a cheat day, workout 5-6 days a week, and I lose nothing.  I was hardcore on eating right and exercising for the last 10 days, and I had gained 2 pounds too.  Although it's frustrating, I don't let it bother me at all.  I will weigh myself next week, and I will probably be down those 2 pounds.  Your body changes and goes through changes all the time.

You know you're doing all the right things.  It will eventually catch up to you, and you will reap the rewards.

Weight Loss How to lose 3 pounds. Jun 25 2008

I wish I had suggestions for you, because I'm actually in the same boat!  I'm 5'1 and weigh 114, and have been trying to get to 110 for a LONG time.  I'm trying to lose it based on my lifestyle, and all I've gotten has been 1 lb loss, but I am able to eat more now (had to fix my metabolism) and I am now a proud owner of serious muscle definition!  So, I have lost a lot of body fat.  But the other posters are right.  Cut out sugars, processed foods, things like that.  I eat healthy but, I have a cheat day once a week, and I can't cut out EVERY SINGLE THING.  If I did, I too, would achieve a 3 lb loss, but I don't believe it would last longer than a day.

But, for you, you're only 18.  ENJOY YOUR SPEEDY METABOLISM!!!  I'm 32, and I have to work twice as hard to keep it revved up, just based on my age!  So, it will be a lot easier for you.  I workout 5 days a week, doing HIIT, (High Intensity Interval Training) most days of the week, and strength train 2-3 days a week.  It's a lot, but it feels great.  You won't have to workout as hard, but, if you did, you will drop it a lot quicker.  Good luck!

Maintaining 5'2 ladies around 100lbs: Jun 25 2008

Hey all! I'm 5'1, and 1/2, weigh 114. I'm a little higher too, but my body seems to refuse to go below this.  My goal weight is 110, and since I've been on CC I've only steadily lost 1 lb, but have gained a lot of muscle definition, AND, I've been able to increase my caloric intake. (Was on low caloric restriction for too long)  I consume anywhere to 1200-1500 per day, with one cheat day a week.  I travel a lot too, so sometimes every other month, I have about 2-3 cheat days when I'm gone, but I try to be sensible, and get back on track immediately when I return.

There are days where I've seen 110 for like a day, but I believe it's skewed sometimes due to eating.  Yeah, if I eat no carbs, sugar, and sodium, I can bring that scale down, but that's not realistic eating to me for everyday.  But I incorporate oats, wheat, fruits for breakfast, fruits in season like, melons, berries, for snacks, lean proteins like tuna, chicken, beef for lunch and dinner, and I'm eating a lot of corn on the cob for dinner as well right now, and frozen yogurt for dessert.  I have got to have something sweet everyday!

So, part of me is maybe, just maybe, starting to accept that 114 is it.  And, I'm okay with that, I guess.  My abs are looking better everyday, and I'm in 0's and 2's, so obviously, I have a lot of lean mass.  I have to stop obsessing about the number of the magical 110.

Fitness the best ab workout? Jun 23 2008

I have been doing planks a lot.  Basically, you're in the push-up position, but with your elbows bent, back straight.  Hold your core in, and in this position, hold it for about 20 seconds, and build up as long as you can.  I usually do 4-5 sets at 30 seconds, then rest for 30 seconds.  You can feel it working deep into your rectus abdominus, thus reaching those muscles that ordinary crunches don't do.  I do all sorts of variety of crunches, but have added this one, and it seems pretty powerful.

Weight Loss At what point did you plateau? Jun 18 2008
15:54 (UTC)

I agree.  I have been trying to lose the last 5 through a sensible way of eating, and I have only lost 1 lb this way since I been on this site for about 3 weeks.  My problem was eating so low, at an unhealthy level, and I have increased my calories, so I wasn't expecting much of a loss anyway, so I am grateful I had no gain either.  But like some posters are saying, when you increase your calories, it kickstarts things, and that's my new strategy for this week.  I'm going to add a few more calories, see what happens, then cut, a few for another week, and then go back up.  It's always a game, and and experiment. One thing I have noticed for sure, I'm seeing so much more muscle definition now than ever, so my body needed the extra calories to supplement my weight lifting, and probably couldn't do that before on such a low calorie diet.  As far as exercise, I am busting my butt already, so as far as breaking a plateau through MORE exercise, it just wouldn't be realistic.  I would have to quit my day job, and live in the gym fulltime, so I have to try other methods.  LOL

Actually, I happen to be a flight attendant, and can tell you on international flights, the food is quite good.  Although it may be high in sodium, and fat.  What you can do, is you can request a special meal, specifiying if you want it low fat, low cal, low carb, vegetarian or even kosher!  When I travel for leisure domestically, I usually bring my own snacks, depending on the length of the flight.  Internationally, I'm usually treating myself for a few days, so I eat what they serve and enjoy it, because like one poster wrote, you usually don't get anything!  If you can, try and get into First/World Business Class.  Let me tell you, the food is amazing.  I work for Northwest, and they use all organic and fresh ingredients now.  Have fun on your trip no matter what!  Drink lots of water, and bring your own empty water bottle so you can fill it up in the airport.  It will help you out a lot, but I'm sure you knew that already.Cool

I was in Italy for 10 days in March.  We walked everywhere, everyday, but my meals went from 5 small meals a day to 3 big meals, and I had drinks everyday too.  When I got back, I was 7 lbs up.  And I left weighing at 113.  After 10 days coming back, I was right back at 115, which is my set weight, that I can't seem to get past, but I was happy to be back at 115 at least.  My goal is 110 and that's been my battle forever.

So either way, if you put on a few pounds, don't sweat it.  Enjoy your trip.  I sure did!  And when you get back, you will look forward to getting back on track, and you will at least get back to your original weight before you left.

I didn't count a single calorie when I was there.  And I enjoyed every morsel.  My go to outfits were leggings and balloon-y tops/tunics.  LOL
