Health & Support Religious Fasting Mar 23 2009

definitely a NO No for a diabetic. Of course it is dependent on if you are willing to die young or suffer the long term effects of diabetes for the sake of getting to heaven. {If so, why waste a doctors time or all the expense ofmanaging your diabetes (especially if you do not pay for all the costs)- just die young and get to heaven faster if you are such a religious nut- I have no sympathy for those that waste (abuse)scarce and expensive resources like medical care.}  People do odder (and way, way nastier) things in the name of religion. The reason it is a no no is that diabetes have poor control over their blood sugar levels. It is  HIGH blood sugar levels that damage (alter) redblood cells. The higher the sugar level, the more sugar attaches to red cell. The attachments make the red cell"rougher" and less flexible. That means it "scrapes" blood vessel walls and had a harder time moving in the smallest capillaries. Over time the damage done to blood vessel walls is what causes the "complications" of diabetes- what causes organs to fail- (renal( kidney) damage; eye( retinal) damage; poor circulation, not enough white blood cells moving to fight disease, less red cells moving to bring oxygen- gangrene loves such an environment- then amputation;etc.

So fasting is no food. No food -no increased sugar levels? so why? I think (do not know for certain) a diabetic has such poor control adjusting sugar levels that when they eat there is more out of control surging of sugar levels. A steady level of sugars is easier on a diabetics body long term? Do check it out. It may depend on the type of diabetes you have as to how bad fasting is for you. It is easy enough to check your particular bodies response- just chart your food and sugar levels (do not forget to chart "medications", etc -  have as few variables as possible). Compare fasting to non fasting sugar levels- ( och for all those hourly pokes checking out the sugars). Anytime the sugar increases too much (and especially how long it stays increased) you are asking for long term damage.  If you are doing A1C tests on a regular basis try comparing non fasting months to fasting months- make certain your diet and methods of eating apart from the fasting is the same otherwise  the comparison can be meaningless.(again control the variables).  A1C measures the "damage" to red cells from high sugars. Red cells are produced every day- they generally live for 120 days as a result A1C levels are a good measure of how well a diabetic has managed to control their sugars during the last 120 days.  Can it also meanthat an occasional indulgence resulting in high blood sugars may be OK in the sense of not increasing the risk from long term complications? You will have to wait 120 days for the damaged cells to die before indulging again? maybe- you must give your body a chance to repair the damage too. Good questions to ask, research and keep yourself updated about if you are a diabetic who wants to take as may "safe"  risks as you can. ( all for the glory of a possible non existent god? do it for your friends and family- it a better reward)

Health & Support Question for diabetics and/or people with insulin resistance? Mar 23 2009

my husband needed to lose a lot of weight after been diagnosed as Diabetic. about 150 to be in the slim side of his height. Since it was diagnosed early, it might even mean he would stop been a "diabetic", been fairly "normal" if he managed to lose weigh. He followed CC's recommended calorie levels. ( we bough a food scale to be accurate) and we found he steadily lost 1 to 2 lbs a week with out any increased exercises. So it is doable. maybe you just need a scale and be diligent about accuracy ( use CC recipes "tool" to figure out calories in home cooked food was time consuming but very doable if you really want to know if you are maintaining a 350 calorie deficit every day to lose weight)  that may be your main problem to the slowness of your weight loss- it does not take much inaccuracy to add that 350 calories that is going to stop the weight loss. To keep to the limit he did have to change his diet to have more veggies and fruit, just about no starches like bread.  We noticed a definate relationship between weigth loss, blood sugar levels and A1C blood results that was most encouraging.  after losing about 30 lb's there was a setback after gall bladder surgery that showed the same relationship when the weight went upUndecided.

Get a scale and be diligent, you will know if lack of accuracy was the problem within a month.  the first month had my husband  losing 10 lb- since he never had been that successful at losing weight before so he was impressed.  he loved the fact that it was not always the same foods- as long as the week averaged out to the 350 calorie deficit per day, it allowed him lots of leeway when it came to extra helping of especially nice food - he was willing to  have less calories the following days. he did not have it easy- he has a big appetite, but idea of suffering the side effects ( future medical problems) was unpleasant enough that he learned to like a large salad instead of potato chips or nachos for munching snacks.

Once you know it is inaccuracy that is your problem there are little ways to make food entry easier. for example I tend to use lots of milk in many cups of coffee- instead of measuring the milk I add to each cup, I just pour a likely daily amount in a small jug for use that day for just one entry for the day.  If you eat a standard breakfast( saving time on busy mornings) just make the whole breakfast a "recipe" and enter just that one entry rather than each individual food.

Again -do get a scale and try to be dilligent. Later when you know the calorie values you problebly can get away with be less through- just keep been careful of high calorie foods- a 5 extra lettuce leaves just to use up the lettuce is not that much inaccuracy compared to a couple of extra chocolates consumed just so you can throw out the box. I'm sure that is the problem with slow loss for those who are not burning calories in a lot of excersise but are depending on just lower food calories for weight loss.

If I can I try to measure the dry uncooked food. different people like different amount of firmness or softness. thick rolled oats takes up less volume than watery -gruel like porriage.  That is why if you are really serious to figure out if you are eyeballing too often you should get a scale. Weigh it before and after cooking if you wish to be superaccurate Smile ???

Why did you gain?  If extra stress, that hopefully will not happen again. Just go to the gym again, and impress the guy with the fact that you can deal with problems like weight gain. if the gain was an unusual event think of it as a blessed event to impress a guy with your will and determination to be healthy- not an easy mind set, but if you talk to married couples you will find one of they ways they are impressed by their partners is the way they overcome hurdles.  In a situation like yours , they would have sympathized with the weight gain, then be impressed by the way their partner goes on to lose the weight gain when the crisis passed.

fruit often contain some fiber and all kids of various trace stuff. so as calories go they are way healthier than stuff like sugars or bread. Have a look at the nutrition labels to see if the fruit gives you stuff that other things in you diet do not give before deciding it is too much calories.

why? anything one posts can have a negative effect.  No one replying for example. For all you know lessin08 might have a sneaky suspicion he IS sabotaging but is too uncomfortable to admit to be married to such an uncaring person.  It might BE reassuring to know his behavior sounds negative to others.   She is not imagining things out of "cultural" differences.   For all you know it might lead to marriage counseling and a marriage saved before too much bitterness from quarrels occours.  Myself if that was the problem I'd find to have a complete stranger tell me that my partner was trying to sabotage me and didn't have my best interests in mind an opinion helpful. I'd have to decide if it applied to my case or not, and if I'd been avoiding a painful truth.  kind of like the Emperor is wearing no clothes bluntness.

no. they taste no different. Actually bluberries have few pests and as a result need few pesticides.   Must be just that batch or variety.  If you keep on finding them objectional go back to getting regular blueberries. Save the extra money for organic for stuff that gets a lot of spraying.
Health & Support Im completely lost... Feb 12 2008

remember Twiggy said she always ate everything she wanted. She was born with the right metabolism at the right time.  Not everyone is that lucky. If she had been looking for a husband that wanted a wife who could happily bear a lot of children without discomfort, bet she would have been out of luck. (given a choice, would you really want to marry someone who will likely die in childbirth especially if you love her)  Find what you want in life that you can use your ability to control that would not be that hard on your health-Musical instrument, a foreign language. try seeing if you can change focus as to what makes you feel good aboutyourself.  I like food too much that I cannot imagine the will power to semi starve ones self the way people with ED do. Remember it's society message about been slim is perfect that you are asorbing. look around- there are prople whoes lives are "perfect" without been slim. -So are you "stupid" to think you need to be slim? Think outside the Box????

Maybe what I'm saying sounds silly, but sometimes just there right concept at the right time can change a persons attitude. It could even be a concept they have heard before.  I remember as an adolescent for years I used to look at my image reflected in glass window displays. I used to wonder if I had a huge streak of vanity- very uncomfortable notion since I was about 14 at the time and very self conscious. I knew my behavior was weird. One day it suddenly struck me I did not look as "fat" as I though I was because I was long legged. One I realized what was bothering me about myself, I found myself not looking anymore.  Very strange to say the least since it happened around 16 - seemed to me I had been starring at myself for years!  A zen moment???

Foods How do I add half a serving of a tagged item? Feb 11 2008
01:48 (UTC)
1

Recipes and items you tag for foods you cannot find listed is tricky. With entering you own nutrition values-best to enter the amount you often eat. with the bagel, enter half a bagel. If you want to enter a whole bagel just add to your calorie count twice.  Recipes you edit as to the number of servings. Its annoying but if you have a generic recipe like stew entered with each time you are making it yu use different amounts of ingredients( example adding the last two carrots) you are editing so much another change in the amount you are serving is not that much of an inconvenience. Sometimes I break it down so one person gets 2 servings (working out to a "normal" amount -the serving is actually half a "normal"serving) while another with a larger appetite gets 3 three. there are some conveniences in the set up also. I have an unvarying breakfast on workdays. I tag the whole breakfast as a recipe, that way I just have one item to click to add for all my different breakfast items.(porridge, milk, bran, coffee, milk, sugar all with one click) . If you tag something you find in CC's database, you will find hovering your cursor over the amount gives your other options like other, teaspoon, tablespoon, cup etc. Other is great if you can weigh your food.

If you need to be fussy about the amount you eat, say you are a diabetic so you want to know how hard your foods are on your sugar levels, get a scale with grams. Best is an electronic scale with a tara( zeroing function) for great convenience in having less addition, subtraction mistakes. The inconvenience of weighing everything ( until you remember standard amounts) is more than made up by the fact you "KNOW" why you were not losing weight.  400 extra calories daily because you were not  accurate, translates into not losing by one pound a week. to get a 1 to 2 pound a week weight loss,CC tries for a 600 to 400 calorie deficit every day.  (it also works if you average out to the same deficit over a week.  If your have an extra 400 calories one day, but manage to be lower by 400 calories over the rest of the week to make up for that days spike, you can still lose that one pound a week.  Use analysis.)

Foods what time of the day should I take my vitamins? Feb 11 2008
01:24 (UTC)
I'd take it with something that has fat in it like milk that is not skim because some vitamins are fat soluble and as a result they will digest (uptake) by your body better if there is a trace of fat when you have your vitamins. Not a big deal though since with daily vitamins you are likely to be getting sufficient.  It does make breakfast better time since you are likely to be eating stuff that has a trace of fat. There would be none with water.

Meanwhile look around for websites. you may find a source that you may not think as a likely one. I came across a site for mail ordering organic grain products that had a lot of gluten free products- I would not doubt that they would have suggestions.  http://www.bobsredmill.com/   was the company I was thinking of. A lot of large grocery chains carry their products.

best to try to balance your diet when possible since unless you pay for quality one never knows how good the quality control for the company is. You know wilted"fresh" veggies is likely to be poorer quality than flash frozen "fresh vegetables. Hard to tell with a pill.  Know what foods are rich in what vitamins and minerals and try to make certain you eat them on a regular basis.  Most nutrition labels will give you information on calcium, so thats relatively easy to figure out. A blood test that checks your hemoglobin count will always tell if your diet may be too low in Iron. If you are healthy, unless you are VERY fussy about food (making very poor choices) chances are if you vary your diet  a multivitamin every other day is the most you would need.

Foods Salad Dressing Debate! Jan 29 2008

The fat is what helps the rest of the dressing stick to leaves and other smooth surfaces. So if you cut out the oil the dressing is likely to collect at the bottom of the bowl. Its seems a wast of effort if people will not spoon up the fresh basil ,parsley etc. at the bottom of the bowl.  So if I'm not using oil, I try to dry the washed salad as much as possible so they are more likely to be coated with the oil free dressing.

You should plan to have the fats with foods that has fat soluble vitamins to make maximum use of the few fats you do eat.  If having carrots, sweet potatoes,etc- add a tiny dab of butter.  drink 1 % milk, instead of skim all the time.  http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/foodnut/093 15.html  will give you all you want to know. Vit D is the latest "fad" vitamin with many studies recently been published as to its greater need in people.

Main reason it's considered unhealthy is the calories it packs-unless you live in a state of semi starvation those calories just get stored as fat. Carbohydrates, fats then proteins are the oder the body breaks down ones food reserves.  If you eat enough carbs (sugars and starches) the fats get stored as fat instead of been used as fuel by the body.

supposedly a grandmother health when carrying you mother can influence your height. weird. but I assume it was properly researched. Shorter people require less nourishment so I suppose it was a good survival tool when someone might be a grandmother at 30. She would still be healthy enough to help the grandchild get proper nourishment in a food scarce situation?  Its not saying a mother does not have an affect, just saying a grandmother can affect also.

If you find them to be too small a serving why not pick up some vegetables and heat them in the microwave at the same time. Usually there is enough sauce in the dinner to flavour the extra vegetables. Different bags of frozen veggies will make for a quick choice and great variety. For that matter if you will use it up soon, you could chop up extra veggies when cooking throw them in bags that you will use with the frozen dinners in a week or two. Usually there is no problems with freezer burn in two weeks if you do not do not bother properly preparing for long freezer storage.

Health & Support Too much iron??? Jan 11 2008

There is a medical condition where people take up too much Iron . Its hereditary. So if you do have this rare condition there are blood test to detect it. A person can only absorb so much Iron a day. And it is gradual, so people who need to restore quickly restore iron lost due to blood loss (bleeding as in heavy periods) might take slow release forms of Iron in a daily pill.
New Members Editing Food Addition Jan 07 2008
02:03 (UTC)
Slightly faster is to click on it in the food log to bring that entry up - change to what you want, enter it, then go the the "wrong" entry and delete it. It does save looking through the tagged items for the same item.  Its also a good method for looking up foods you figured out a few days ago( like a complicated to enter item you picked up on sale (say frozen entrees) that you cannot bother to tag as you are not likely to eat it again for months till the next sale. Just change the date to the day you want added to the food log.  (experiment-sometimes depending on how you have opened the log( 7days searching for the item) it will automatically log to the last day looked up-so double check if you do not fuss with the date.)

Go on it for a few weeks. 3 or 4 at least. See if there is weight loss-do a weekly weight with a routine that day that is consistent (first thing in the day after good nights sleep?). It might be that you are not logging foods accurately. I bought an electronic food scale and have been weighing just about everything (things like lettuce are low enough I go by cups instead of grams) and it has been good enough that my husband who all his life believed he only had to look at food to gain, found himself losing 1 to 2 lb a week without any additional exercises. it even helped over Christmas in that he could roughly guess the foods he ate when not at home-he basically fluctuated for December -plateaued instead of gaining since his heightened awareness as to the calorie costs of what he ate allowed him to balance things well without even more than one or two days of glucose levels higher than he wished. Recently diagnosed as a diabetic-(he had been expecting it to happen one day) he finally had the motivation to have a serious try at losing weight. He loves the fact that he can have his favourite treats (admittedly in lesser amounts, but he would throw off his sugars if he had a large amount so that is not a worth while option anyway) He balences them with healthier options like extra salad vegetables or fruit.  You may find that the lack of accuracy in counting the calories is the main stumbling block, since by been more active ( increase in the activity level you log yourself at) means you can eat 400 calories more.  The scale was well worth the price since he has about 120lbs to lose -1 to 2 years of regular use.  It has been snowing enough that he has been out shoveling just about every other day the last two weeks-it was enough exercise (despite the christmas/ new year eating), its has suprised us that he lost 2 lb's at today's weekly weighing.  Before been discouraged make certain you ARE weighing the foods you eat.

reaction to stress goes both ways. Some eat (to get some pleasure out of the day?) others are so busy they have little appetite.  I do know from personal experience shock like from somone's unexpected death can make me lose weight ( as far as I know I ate normally, it was only for about a week though I lost weight but it was 10 lbs at least during that week.)

At least you are aware of your problem, and not in denial. That is sure to help in you successfully figuring out how to deal with the situation now and later.

Get a scale,an electronic one with a tare function to weigh all foods. the only way to know if the dieting is working with the freedom to chose foods you like. If you have 100lbs to lose following a life changing diet style, you would be trying for a 2 lb a week loss, =1 year, so you should think about buying a good quality  scale you find pleasing to use. As it is you will be spending a lot of time guessing if you have made the right choice for calorie equivalents -lots of possibilities for error there. On CC use recipe, and the tags to figure out and quickly add what you often eat. For example if you tend to a standard breakfast- place it all under a recipe for a quick addition to your food log. If you tend to vary somewhat with a standard meal, tag it under a general name, for example  Salad, with your commonly used salad ingredients all listed under one tag for quick calling up an item to add to your food log.   weighing is a good way for people who are convinced they just have to look at food to gain weight- the weight of the food is proof that you had under or over estimated.  It also allows you to figure out if a less calorie dense  food( which you do not like) is worth the replacement- for example you many prefer to drink your coffee black, rather than substituting skim milk for whole milk. you make up for drinking it black by buying a coffee you like better.  Or maybe you decide the whole milk is better and maybe make a point of making coffee more milky because its going to be about the only regular source of Calcium and vit d in your diet. (you are just not soaking up 15 mins of vit D producing sunshine every day)

If you are really curious-weigh all ingredients and compare the percentage of dry lentils used to the weight of all the ingredients used. To be super exact weigh after you cook too - to estimate water loss as steam if you thicken the soup with a long simmer. Write it up (log recipe on CC) if you think you would be making it up often with similar ingredients. With all that weighing you can figure out a percentage factor you could use that would be reasonably accurate. If you can round up some kids that will participate (something to do with the young relatives coming for a long Christmas visit ?), include them in the fun- they are playing "Food scientist".  the recipe you finally log will be your science report. They can have fun figuring out how to phrase it so someone else looking up the recipe can see how rigrous the "experiment" was.  REAL LIFE SKILLS.  You never know, some who you think might be too old (or too young), might be intrested in helping out with the project.

For Christmas get yourself a GOOD food scale. Electronic ones with a Tare(zeroing) function would be the best. You will be using it every day ( 100lb at 2lbs a week is one year of steady and a commitment to a life change loss) so get good quality. It is the ONLY way to know you are not guessing. weigh everything, enter it on CC. Knowing that cheese will add 300 calories may mean you eat less of it or savour every crumb since another you would rather use the 300calories of another healping for something else.   I have found by measuring everything one gets to have an idea how much every portion of food will add up and as a result when you are away from your scales you will be in better control. The other nice thing - it DOES allow you treats and favourites - just add its calories into your diet, and compensate with healthier foods (add an extra carrot, chose a bigger pear, have whole grain rather than white bread, etc).  Knowing you can eat that treat as long as you make up for it by eating healthier the next few days will allow you better self control- after all it is not what you eat THAT day that counts as much as what you eat over time that determines what weight you put on permanently. Over time you might even appreciate-the fact that your are choosing the more expensive chocolate since a small (but very delicious) piece is cheaper (both in price and calories) than a big but hohum chocolate bar -  Resist buying that impulse chocolate bar at the checkout because you know you still have a few of some absolutely heavenly chocolate horded in your fridge.  check out http://www.salterhousewares.com/to get an idea of what top quality kitchen scales can be like. the easier you make it for yourself to count calories, the more you are likely to do it. the tare function makes for ease-less adding and subtracting to make for errors too.  My husband has been recently diagnosed as diabetic too-he believed he was one of those who only had to look at food to gain weight, but weighing food and faithfully entering it has had him loosing 1 to 2 lbs every week . He is now convinced that in time he will lose weight (120lb to go still) without even going out of his way with exercising or depriving himself of favourites like ice cream. ( if he is wanting Ice Cream-he will have less of cheese, or switch from ham to chicken to as to have the calories to indulge in Ice Cream). the resulting steady weight loss (and the low blood sugars -it really make him feel better-less irritable in mood) is really motivating him.

since you did not post your height we have no idea if you are underweight, normal, overweight or obese.  but also look at it this way- yes, you have a right to value your views on what you should weigh (anorexic look or African standards of "well padded to western standards" beauties)and it is none of anyone's business what you are trying to achieve.  If you are looking for some one who is attracted to your inner beauty-you should not stress out ( for that matter some Muslim women are convinced a burka will attract the ideal mate, weird like as if in a world of arranged marriages, you would not be look upon with suspicion worthy of a used car from any parent who cares about their son's happiness.)  That aside, remember you are young and pray to all of youth's insecurities ( just look at older peoples complete obliviousness of their unattractive, unhealthy over weightess  ( by the way I'm one )).  So decide what you really want (it may change in the next hour but convincie yourself you are mature and not a flighty innocent, naive, gullible (etc)4 year old ( people say that to themselves ALL their livesSmile). Decide on various options-enjoy yourself with out fussing because you  are not out to catch a goodlooking pleasure for the night, enjoy a different headspace giving you a break form you student life, etc. Do not add extra stress on top of a student life that is already stressing you enough you are asking for help here.  Any option that helps steady you right now should be welcomed. Remember you  have 80 plus years of life to correct ,adjust and find happiness in.  EVERYONE makes mistakes - you still have-at least 60 years to find perfect happiness.  Seriously you might as well start thinking about food habit's that are good for you now -great if it makes you feel better by your vacation where you may find it an occasion to try new foods.
