| Health & Support | Picking Feet - self-mutilation? | Nov 09 2009 20:07 (UTC) |
|
I don't have the feet picking thing, but I do have a bald spot and nerve damage on my head from a place that I just keep scratching at. It's been there for over 10 years now. I also have a problem where I will lose 2 or 3 hours in the bathroom because I'm just sitting there with a pair of tweezers and a needle pulling out random body hairs, and digging out any that have become ingrown. It really gets in the way of school work and sleep sometimes, and my legs tend to look kind of gross. I can't believe there are so many others with similar problems. |

Original Post by ohyum: They're kind of like jube jubes, but tougher, more flavourful, and slightly less sweet. The black ones are not that awful black licorice flavour though. You can get them (Maynards brand) in pretty much any store that sells chocolate bars (here in Canada at least). Wikipedia has a decent entry about them (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wine_gum) |

I just have to make a comment on the cell phone thing... Sometimes there are cases where I'll bring my cell into the gym with me. If I'm expecting a call about a job, I'll bring it in so that I don't potentially miss the call. But with that being said, I really don't understand how somebody could bring their cell to the gym and talk/text throughout their entire workout. I'm pretty lucky that at the YMCA I go to there aren't a lot of people/things that bug me. Lots of machines, everybody comes, does their thing, and minds their own business. I stopped going to the gym on campus because there were too many people there who would just blatently stare at anyone. |

I've been doing some simple arm exercises with light weights for the past month or so, and the last time I went home my mom commented on how toned my arms looked. It's so nice when somebody notices! I actually find the weights to be too light for most of the movements, so am buying some slightly heavier ones soon. No more stick-thin chicken arms for me! |

Original Post by neanderthin: Actually, the egg whites that come in the cartons are just plain egg whites that come from eggs laid by the same chickens that lay the eggs you buy in cartons. The only difference is the grade quality of the egg. Only eggs with a quality of AA or A make it into cartons. B quality eggs are used in liquid egg products. The difference in quality just has to do with the yolk height and viscosity of the egg white, so it's not like the egg whites in cartons are that different than the egg whites that come out of an egg that you crack. (edit: fix spelling) |

Straight from a fact sheet given to me from my nutritionist: Try to stick with whole grain carb sources (ex. multigrain cereal, whole wheat english muffin, popcorn, unsweetened applesauce, fresh fruit) and a lower fat protein source (ex. tuna packed in water, boiled egg, milk, yogurt, humms, peanut butter) and your snack will keep you full and fueled for longer, but will also provide you with that immediate boost that comes from carbs. |

Yes, green tea could count as fluid intake. But you have to remember that caffiene does have a dehydrating effect on the body, so you may need more fluid from another source. Herbal teas, such as chammomile and mint, don't have the caffiene that green tea does, and might be another way for you to get your daily dose of water. I find that if I keep a bottle of water near me at all times, I do get the water I need. I also make a point of drinking a glass of water with at least one meal. |

That does seem really weird. The only thing I can think of is that the different brands/companies have gotten slightly different results for the food analysis of their products. Another possibility is the whole harvesting, storage, and preservation process. Most bananas (like other fruits and veggies) are picked when they are not quite ripe and are stored in specific gases to prevent them from ripening while in storage. Then, before they are shipped to a grocery store, they get a blast of ethelyne gas (signals ripening) so that they do end up looking ripe on the shelves. So if a fruit was picked further into its ripening process, it would contain more sugars and nutrients than a fruit picked while it was more green. That's why we're often told that frozen or canned fruits and veggies are more nutritious than the fresh ones (they are picked when they are ripe and processed immediately), but with the salt used in canning, I'd think frozen is a better option. Wow, that was a pretty big digression... but I guess what I'm trying to say is that there are so many variables with fresh produce, that it's impossible to have an exact food analysis of the piece of fruit/veggie you are eating. The rest are just kind of samples of what it could be, and your best bet is to look at them as an average of sorts. |

| Health & Support | I get my period once a year...Is this unhealthy? | Jun 17 2009 18:02 (UTC) |

If you're only 15, then it probably isn't that big of a deal, unless (as other posters have said) you used to have fairly regular periods. Some people just get them later in life. I know I didn't even start getting my period until I was almost 16, and they remained very light (1-3 days) and only came every 2-3 months. It wasn't until somewhere between 18 and 19 years old that they suddenly came regularly and were much heavier. So yep, everybody's body is different. If you really are concerned, I would get a second doctor's opinion on the matter though.

When I started my recovery process, I had the help of a nutritionist and I really, really wanted to get better... and that made all the difference in the world. I have a big thick folder of information sheets, snack ideas, the physiology of recovery, etc. etc. etc. One of the most useful things I found myself doing was looking at my daily schedule ahead of time and planning out when I would have time to eat. I aimed for my eating times to be once every 3-4 hours, but if they were a little closer, or a little further away, that was alright too. Then I'd plan out which eating times would be meals and which ones would be snacks. "Meals" included at least one serving of three food groups, and "snacks" contained both carbs and protein. Some ideas of balanced snacks: I also found that I went through a period of time where I was just NOT HUNGRY. It was extremely frustrating because I knew that I should be eating, but for some reason after two carrot sticks I felt like I had just eaten Christmas dinner. During that time I ate mostly "snacks" and spaced them out 2.5-3 hours so that I would still get the calories and energy that I needed for the day. Best of luck with recovery. It has its ups and downs, for sure. You'll probably gain weight during the first part since your metabolism is slower, but as you increase your intake, your metabolism will eventually speed up and you'll be able to eat more food and give your body the nutrients it nees without gaining any weight. Sorry for the novel... a lot of this information is coming from the 1" stack of pages my nutritionist has given me over the past year or so. And again, good luck!! |

| Health & Support | Chances of getting pregnant while using birth conrtol and a condom? | Jun 17 2009 17:26 (UTC) |
4 |
Even though the cances might be really small, things still happen. My sister was told by doctors that due to a medical condition of hers, she would likely never be able to have children. She was on the pill, and her boyfriend used condoms, but she still (by some freak of nature chance) ended up getting pregnant. If there's a serious medical risk involved with you getting pregnant, then I'd say wait until that risk is gone before you do have sex with your boyfriend. Even if the chance is really tiny, it's still a chance, and it's still there. Is sex really worth a potential serious medical risk? |

I think it's a good thing that you recognize your behavior and feelings now. Since you do acknowledge that there is a potential problem, now is the time to seek out help. Try finding a nutritionist or counsellor in your area who you can talk to, because if you don't nip your behavior in the bud, there is a good chance that it will slowly take over your life and make you miserable. I noticed when my 'dieting' started getting extreme, but didn't do anything about it for about a year. In that time I managed to start exercising extensively, eating little to no food during the day, and having enormous binges randomly in the late evening throughout the week. I also managed to warp my own perception of my body to the point where I was convinced that I was legitimately overweight, even though my BMI clearly stated otherwise. I've been working on recovery since September, and it is a difficult process. The binging habit I developed has been a very hard thing to kick, and I still have a terrible sense of what my body actually looks like. I feel like every girl around me is smaller than I am, and I still haven't been able to get rid of the feeling of shame I have about the way my body looks. If I could go back to when I first started being weird about food, I would in a heartbeat. And I would tell myself to get some help immediately so that I wouldn't have to be dealing with the things I'm going through. Please take care of yourself, and prevent yourself from going through a very difficult time later on. |

| Health & Support | I just binged for the first time in over 2 months | Feb 23 2009 00:44 (UTC) |

Original Post by i_startedthefire: I think that is supposed to mean that relapse is something that happens to all people trying to recover from some sort of disordered eating pattern. In general it's something that is expected to happen (aka is the rule), as opposed to being the exception where it's something that doesn't usually happen. I'm actually seeing a nutritionist now to help me in the recovery process from what I guess is considered ednos. After I had gone about a month without binging she told me that it was great, but not to be surprised when I binged again. And she told me that it would happen, and it was just a matter of time. She said that the healthiest thing I could do when I did binge again was to just accept that I had binged, make note of it for our whenever our next appointment was, and move on as though the binge had not happened. She also gave me a few documents on "What to do instead of binging", and reccomended that when I did have another binge that instead of doing anything I'd normally do after binging, I should do something on the list and distract myself from any negative feelings of guilt that I would have. When I did have a binge another 2 months later, I was prepared for it... and as soon as I realized that I had binged, I got out of the house, left the mess in my kitchen, and did something distracting. I still felt bad about it a little bit, but kept telling myself that no, this was a normal part of recovery, and that I'd just keep going through my normal routine as though I had not binged.

I used to be allergic to everything, but most of my allergies don't bother me nearly as much any more. I think I conditioned myself out of those by subjecting myself to all of them at once for extended periods of time (a girl who's allergic to hay, horses, cats, dust, dust mites, etc. shouldn't spend as much time working at horse farms as I have :P). I haven't had any allergy problems in years, and haven't noticed any symptoms popping up lately. My asthma is something I haven't been able to condition myself out of though. I've just gotten better at ignoring the fact that I can't breathe. When I do take my puffer it doesn't help, although that could be due to the fact that it is expired (thus the Dr. appointment...) |

I was in Mexico a few years ago... although I was near Ensenada and was on a missions trip, so it was a little bit different. We did go shopping at La Bufadora though, and for the most part I had US$ with me which worked out fine. I think most of us did a bit of exchanging in the airport in California before we drove down to Ensenada... but I honestly don't remember many of those details. |

Hi everyone, I haven't posted here in a while... almost a month now! I slipped back into old bad habits, but I'm trying to fix things again. I'm not going to try to gain weight this time, because it will just make me feel awful about myself, but I'm going to try to be healthier in my eating habits. I booked an appointment with a nutritionist in October and I'm really excited to have a bit of professional help. I just thought I'd come back and say hi because everyone here is fantastic. I am going to get my life back on track, but I'm going to do it slowly. |

Sorry for running away so quickly last night. I was mid-post when I noticed the time and realized that I was behind schedule.
I haven't eaten yet today (just woke up) but my stomach still feels off and so I'm scared to. I know know know I need to eat more, but it's so hard. The good thing is that I've been eating a lot of fortified foods and have been using 5% cream instead of milk, so those have upped my intake, but I still need to get my butt in gear and eat more. (Haven't even been paying attention to my food this weekend, which for now is a bad thing I guess) Anyways, time to go have breakfast (protein shake, vector cereal). |

Thanks everyone who reassured me about the haircut (even if you can't see it :P haha)... I'm sure I'll get used to it. Positivelinny, your comment made me burst into laughter. I loved it :D gibbit - You're not disgusting, peanut butter is for being so seductively delicious! The 'binge' you had doesn't sound terrible, but I've been there and it's no fun. Hope everything has been going well since then! (Besides, if you're trying to gain, a little binge here and there must be good for us, right... :S haha) agru - I can't believe I haven't wished you happy birthday yet! HAPPY (belated) BIRTHDAY! Hope you have a great time being 25!
shoot, i have to run.... have to walk the doggie and then drive home... going out to the club tonight with my friends (eek, i don't know what to wear at all) and so it's going to be a challange! haha |

I've made some goal weights / checkpoint weights. Weight 1: 134 lbs I really don't want to hit weight 2 right now. It's just a scary number and is way more than I've ever weighed in my life. Even 134 is my highest weight. So... I'm scared. But I'm going to eat lots until I hit weight 1. Hopefully I'll be able to get to a nutritionist or something before then, but since I'm 130ish right now that might not happen. I guess I figure that if I gain more weight than I want, at least I will fix up my metabolism along the way, and then I'll be able to lose any extra in a gradual and healthy way. But seriously... Not a good day today mentally. Grrrrrrrrrrrr.... |

So apparently I'm terrible at getting to the computer to keep up with this thread! Whoops. So starting from the bottom up... agru - I think it is near impossible to figure out the calories in ice cream unless you have the nutrition label from whatever it is you're eating. There is just SO MUCH variation out there! t17 - Peanut butter is my stupid weakness. I know that it's something that makes me feel sick if I eat too much of it but I just love it so much! Mmmmmm. As for university... I'm going back after taking some time off and it's stressing me out too, even though I've been there before! Mostly just the idea of doing an intermediate calculus course after not doing calc since fall semester '06 terrifies me beyond belief. Not to mention the fact that I have lost touch (on purpose) with my old friends/roommates and am now going to be that person who's 2 or more years older than everyone else in my classes. I'm used to being the young one of my friends, and do not take well to being the oldest. Gaaaaaah! Stress. As for food.... I've been adding in these 'shake' things to my day... So today I've had 2 shakes, a banana, a package of crackers, vector cereal with cream (still getting used to it), a caramel/vanilla drumstick ice cream cone, a package of those fizz candies (hehe!), a granola bar, 1.5 strawberry pop tarts... and a can of iced tea. Today SUCKED as far as 'real' food goes, but there's reason for it. I didn't start work until later than usual today, and I fell asleep and then was late for work, so didn't get a chance to pack a real lunch (thus the crackers, banana, pop tarts, granola bar, ice cream, candies, garbage food, etc.) After work I had to walk the dog and pick up my car from the garage, so by the time I got a chance to eat I was just like "Screw it! I'm having a shake and cereal!" |

Sorry, just have to log the food before I catch up because I feel like I ate way too much and need to reassure myself that I'm alright. breakfast - 1.5 packages oatmeal with grated apple added, about 1/3-1/2 cup of granola, handful of froot loops lunch+snack - a banana, about 1/3 cup of froot loops, 4 arrowroot cookies, 2 garlic sticks, 1 big shortbread cookie with smarties, a bottle of iced tea after work - bowl of froot loops (my sister bought them and they are delicious, ok! haha), a few saltine crackers, yogurt, some candies, m&ms supper - 1 chicken breast, some green beans, about 5 cheddar cheese cubes, 3 mini chocolate bars, 2 chocolate dipped strawberries and a piece of chocolate dipped banana more snack - english muffin with butter and a bit of peanut butter, 2 bagel bites ...
