| Haha I like that comparison of a huge chest and a carbon frame. *finally proud of his pre-pubescant chest!* I have been doing a lot of very intense hill work. There is a climb about 10km from my house that has an insane grade and when I go there I try to ride up in as big a gear as possible while keeping my cadence high. My HR goes very close to max there and I do that hill 3 times with a short recovery at the top and while I ride back down. I'm pretty sure that must be paramount to a strength workout or perhaps a strength endurance workout? I have found a gym that seems quite relaxed and there dont seem to be any hectic power lifting going on there. I think I'm just going to sign up and see what happens. I want to do a lot of core strength and lower back strength along with squats and that type of full body training to assist in both a reduction of BF% and leg strength. Thanks for all the links melkor and trhawley for your sugestions. I think I have the right sort of ideas now |

| Thanks melkor, there are some good principles there. It makes sence that the stronger your muscles are the more power you have at your disposal; the interesting part is how to convert that to actual speed on the bike... anyhow About joining a gym. What is the proceedure normally? Does one just have to dive in there and find your own way? Do you have any pointers on joining the right gym and how to actually get started once you have signed up? |

| Fitness | I suddenly greatly respect mountain bikers. | Aug 31 2008 10:54 (UTC) |
|
| hey :) im a mountainbiker and i love it. we have forests all around where i live and its awesome to get away into the trees and forget about everything. when you find techinical single track to ride on its an exhilerating experience. in South Africa we have a large population of people who walk cross country to work so we are allways finding exciting footpaths to ride down that people have trodden into the ground. its also a lot harder than people think. when you say you have ridden for 20km to an experienced road cyclist they will scoff at your seemingly menial achievement but the steepness of the rides and the difficulty of pedaling over rough terrain makes a short(er) distance as hard as a longer distance on a flatish road. where i live the sport is growing in popularity and there are organised mountainbike events almost every weekend. its great excersize and burns a lot of calories. i actually dont believe those HRM's though. on my ride yesterday my garmin hrm with the altitude and gps reader (supposed to calculate calories more effectively with more information to go on) said that i had burned 1000cals over one hour and 20km. to me that seems like a few too many calories burned.... anyway im glad you are into it now and keep going! the more you ride the sexier your calves look ;) |

| riding my mountain bike.
there are people riding who are almost too young to walk and almost too old to walk. races are a huge social event for young and old and its such good excersize that dosnt damage your joints |

| Fitness | Which bike seat????????? | Apr 09 2008 22:37 (UTC) |
|
| hi
Bike seats... :) wow this one took me ages to get right. i am a mountain biker that varies from fairly fit to very lazy but i have found a seat that works for me. the thing about these seats is that you cant just sit on them and expect to feel great because realistically this is not going to happen with any seat. with a good seat your rear end (right euphemisn?) gets used to it quickly and then it is super comfortable. But a bad seat or one that is too "cushy" will give you dull pain indefinately. a good bike seat must be engineered right. companies like specialised and selle italia put a lot of time getting the right amount of preassure on the right points. i think it really is worth it to invest in a good seat and to spend a bit of time/displeasure to wear your bum into it so to speak beacause then you will have a very comfy seat i bough a "max flite" from selle italia and allthough shcoked at how much it cost at the time i have never regreted it since good luck and remember that helmet :) |

| Health & Support | Depression and Bingeing | Mar 07 2008 20:23 (UTC) |

| hey lucy
i know EXACTLY how that feels and i firstly want you to know that you are NOT alone and that i understand the depth of your despair, especially afterwards. i never got propper treatment for my depression but i came out of the worst of it in the end. For me it was getting out of the worst of the depression that stopped my binging and for me that was finding the love of my life and my messed up life just cae right on its own. my point is that i never was able to stop my binges so perhaps the best course of action is to go and see a doctor or somone who can treat your depression becasue therein lies the cause of the binging and so that is what you must treat. treating the binging is treating the symptoms and that gets you nowhere. that being said i found tht certain things were bound to "trigger" a binge. the "quit carring" that you spoke of only happened to me once i had eaten somethig VERY calorie dense or somethign that you know you shouldnt have had so for me the best way to avoid the binge was to get the hell away from any trigger fods whenever i felt really down and eventually i got very good at recognising when i was headed for a "bad mood" and i would get out the house, go for a walk, a jog or go play squash, do anything to get away and out of "danger" i really hope you found something in my post that you can use and that you go see someone qualified to really help you. depresssion is ugly and i have the scars to prove it so i wish you the best of luck and my sympathy |

| hey.
firstly dont try to compare yourself to your friend because thats problably why most people feel so bad... you sound like a chronic procrastinator like myself. it sucks but you have to get a grip of yourself and only you can decide when that happens. maybe you should start my not promising yourself anything. dont say you going to go for a run, go for the run... i know its not as easy as that but its somethign to think about because if you SAY you going to go for a run, it kind of gives you the excuse not to because you are so used to not listening to your own promises. i dont know if that makes any sence but i tried :) |

| hey. congrats on the weightloss :)
i think i have simmilar sorts of issues. the kind of thing where people are telling you that you are thin but you just cant see it. no matter how much you loose you can allways find some fat on you to be sad about... my "goal weight" a few months ago when i started to loose weight is actually 3kg heavier than i am now (nearly 7lbs) and im still not happy. maybe this is actually about learning to love your body the way it is and not compare to the lucky ones like miss alba. after all we are in the lower parts of the BMI... i dont have answers for you chelseagirl, i can just say that you probably not alone and goodluck on whatever you decide to do |

| i do this all the time. its terrible :(
i totaly understand how you feel. its the most disgusting thing because you completely loose your head and then afterwards you look at what you have done and you feel so bad. dont beat yourself up about it please. and just consider why it happened. dont let yourself get too hungry becuase i have found that that is a big trigger for me |

| the problem i allways have with people saying "i cant reach my calories for today" is this: peanut butter has 622cals per 100grams. if you have a spoon or two of that every few hours there is no way you wont reach your goals (irritates me too cuz i allways have to cut down cuz i could eat 6000 easy) | |||
| Foods | Breakfast Foods...HELP!!! | Nov 18 2007 18:45 (UTC) |

| OOOH i love breakfast time :)
One of my favorites is mixing interesting and different healthy cereals and adding things to the mix for example. high fiber bran + a cut up apple + some strawberries + a nutty muesli or bran flakes with raisins and cut up banana and some nuts (almonds, peacans ect ) an egg in the style of your choice for some protein and never forget the coffee :) a 500 cal vreakfast can be very fun to "spend" because its quite a lot if you eat things like fruit and high fiber bran |

| hahaha. you have an outlook i admire (but shouldn't)
maybe you should eat something like high fiber bran. it is the opposite of the beer i suppose. I eat this bran for breakfast most days that is about 200cals per 100grams and 100grams of this stuff is a HUGE portion. that should fill you up/absorb some of the alcohol. i'm no expert but that makes sense to me... then maybe just cut down you cals during the day before the big night and the day after. but honestly dude you cant get wasted and still expect to loose weight. maybe just look to limit the damage? |

you are not alone in hating your body even though you are "normal". you are aiming at an ideal an ideal where you can just accept you for you AND work on your body at the same time. I wish you the best of luck |

| i'm really glad that i'm not alone with the binging thing. but its so silly... i suppose its just something you have to figure out for yourself and learn to controll.
so the dried cinamon reduces your unreasonable apetite/hunger? |

| Thanks for all your replies.
I hear what you are all saying and i think that the best plan would be to slowly increase my food intake till i get to the recommended calorie levels. Its actually quite funny in a dark sort of way when i look at my situation. About 2 months ago i was stuffing my face with as much food as i could get hold of and NOW I am too scared to eat anything because i dont want the weight to come back on. I would have laughed at you if you came to me back thenand told me that i would be too scared to eat any food in 2 months time. |

| I was very active at one stage. Played squash everyday and played hard (for those of you who don't know squash... its hard work) and i was not loosing weight. At the time i wasnt particularly interested in loosing weight but i did notice that all the sport didnt kill off the fat.
with this new thing i am loosing wieght at a good rate but i feel so depressed (some may know how it feels to hate urself) that i want to not eat. I hear you with all your warnings that all the fat will go right back on when i start eating again. But how much food is enough. how much food a day will keep me healthy but loose weight. Im 16 male and overweight at 78 kgs. |
