| Foods | Calories in muffins - holy crap! | Aug 29 2008 02:06 (UTC) |
|
| I am a HUGE muffin fan...they're seriosusly the only thing I will spring for the calories for.... I HIGHLY recommend vitamuffins/vitatops...they are great and only 100 calories.... I also often just get muffins from whole foods (they have a low fat bran muffin option as well as regular one's) or a dunkin dougnuts one and cut it in half and freeze the other half and eat it another day...that way you're only getting 200/300 calories and not 500+ |

| yesterday: Breakfast: 1.25 cups Kix cereal & light n't fit yogurt, banana Snack 1: 1/2 Low Fat Bran Muffin from Whole Foods Lunch: Pita with egg beater egg whites and a sliced tomato Snacks in afternoon before dinner: plum, peach, 1 cup watermelon, 1 cup cantaloupe, handful of blueberries, Dinner: brown rice, tomato sauce, and shrimp with green beans and brocolli on the side (steamed) Later Snacks: No sugar added Italian ice, 5 saltines , nectarine and to put it in perspective I am a 5'7'' 20 y/o male who weighs 147 lbs. my days are generally the same thing- 3 main meals (breakfast isn't really a full blown meal because I hate eating before like 10 a.m. haha) and I allow myself one "unhealthy" (but still not crazy) snack, and when I snack I only eat fruit now...I stay away from any crackers, cookies, chips, and cereal as a snack because those are my downfalls....I am maintaining like this now |

| Weight Loss | Which scale is more accurate? | Aug 24 2008 17:51 (UTC) |
5 |
| yea scales pretty much suck hahaha but yea like you said, I would just go to a reliable source (doctor, nutritionist, gym, etc.) where you KNOW the scale will be closest to accurate and have them weigh you and then use the scale that is closest to that accurate weight when you are home... also don't let the numbers drive you crazy, their is so much more ot weightloss than what the stupid (and rather arbitrary) scale likes to say haha |

| I had never seen it...but I am watching it now on youtube and it is hilarious...I could see it offending people who had ED's...but as someone who did, it is sometimes good to laugh at a problem (if that makes sense without comming across as insensitive) | |||
| Foods | What is a tablespoon? | Jul 30 2008 16:07 (UTC) |

| I use a scale too for meat, etc. but from my experiences if you use a leveled measure (cup, measuring spoon, etc.) it is pretty much accurate.... As someone who once developed an ED from becomming obsessive with measuring and stuff...don't get too carried away....the fact that you are consciously portioning out your food rather than just digging in like the average person accounts for A LOT even if it is always 100% accurate! |

| I always measure my cereal and spreads (especially high fat/calorie things like my favorite nutella hahaha) and then always level it off with a metal spatchula....my family and friends think I'm nuts that I measure in the first place and then when I do this they are like "oh give me a break"....but see it makes a HUGE difference (I'm not just crazy) I am so going to show them this video haha In addiiton to being common sense, I actually learned about "leveling" ina home ec. cooking class I took back in high school where the teacher was a measuring fanatic hahaha....another tip I learned and follow: also remember to "pack" your food into the measuring spoon/cup (especially if it fluffy or liquidy in nature) because otherwise you could be getting LESS than you wanted as well (although perhaps that isn't always a bad thing hahaha) |

| Weight Loss | Bad Habits Never Die | Jul 29 2008 14:27 (UTC) |
4 |
| I dropped over 100 lbs in a relatively short period of time...and when I was done while I was now thin I still had my old eating habits deep inside that would tear at me hahaha....but I didn't give in and now two years later eating healthy has just become a part of me and my old habits have not only died but are buried somewhere far far away hahaha....so bad habits do vanish with time! | |||
| Foods | What's so bad about McDonald's french fries? | Jul 29 2008 14:24 (UTC) |
35 |
| umm to answer the question posed in this thread: because they're McDonald's french fries hahahaha and yea the McDonald's in Italy is definately different than those in the US...there is a McDonald's ironically close to my apartment in Italy, as well as my apartment in the US (globalization at it's best hahaha)....and I only eat there to get the occasional frozen yogurt thing they have for 150 calories or their fruit pouch thing hahahaha |

| Weight Loss | I'm going to be that fat American | Jul 29 2008 13:59 (UTC) |

| hey! don't be down about this at all.... I was morbidly obese as a child/teen until I was 18 and I went to Italy for extended periods of time to spend time with family there and later to study (especially in the summer when the shirt comes off and you generally wear less clothes hahaha) and you know what I was absolutely fine....I was just in Italy, as well as France, Monaco, Switzerland, and England and trust me I saw my fair share of overweight people....and I know how you feel because even now when I am extremely thin by US standards I still feel "large" compared to my Italian counterparts...but anytime I mention it they tell me to shut up hahahaha oh and this trip comes at a great time, because EVERYTIME I have gone to Europe, even now when I am thin, I always end up losing a few pounds just by walking and eating their foods, meanwhile in the US I eat less than that and have to go out of my way to exercise and usually gain or maintain my weight hahaha....so maybe this can be a great starting point for a life change to shed the pounds you want... and again from my experiences, the European view of the body is MUCH less superificial than that in the US...(hence why the US has such a distorted problem with obesity and body image related diseases) so don't worry at all about your weight and enjoy your trip! I'm so jealous you're going because I won't be able to go back until January! Buon viaggio! |

| The Lounge | the real biggest country and other useless stuff | Jul 27 2008 13:40 (UTC) |
15 |
| I guess it's "good" the US is not "number 1"...but look at the nation's that are ahead of us...they have such small populations that it would take that much obesity to be topping that list....the US on the other hand has a HUGE population (numerically-no pun intended) and the amount of obese citizens is truely alarming.... not surprised at all to not see the other country I have citizenship (Italy) not listed on there hahahaha |

| I was born and raised in the USA, however have dual citizenship and spend a lot of time in Italy and the European Union...and every time I come back I like you am shocked somehow by the large size of everything that surronds me.... partly it is our culture which is just based on the "bigger is better" mentality, but some of it definately can and SHOULD be changed, it just isn't healthy or appealing.... |

| The Lounge | BMI is b*ll*cks | Jul 26 2008 21:31 (UTC) |
2 |
| yea BMI is a hit-or-miss measurement IMO I think if you have an AVERAGE body it is pretty accurate in giving you an idea of the ball park you should be in....more so for women than men for example I was always morbidly obese before I got carried away with "dieting" and dropped to 130...even though I was still classified as "normal weight" when I hit this low point I looked like I was ready to die and starving (because I was)...so the low end I think is a bit messed up now I said this is for AVERAGE people...if you have a lot (or even slightly more so) of muscle the results of BMI will surely be skewed...as someone has already said by BMI standards athletes would the vast majority of time would be considered over weight based solely on the fact that they have so much HEALTHY muscle which weighs more than UNHEALTHY fat.... I also have had epxerience with this...I was 140 last year and started an exercise routine...a few months later I was 165 lbs. because I had acquired muscle (a good thing) however I was once again considered "overweight" according to BMI even though my waist was the same and I looked the same and my clothing fit better than ever.... moral of the story: take BMI with a grain of salt |

| I am sorry but are you saying that obesity is completely the sole individuals fault and that larger than life macro-level social factors are not at play? Sure obesity is not as permanent as other life chances (i.e. reace, gender, sexuality, creed, etc.)...BUT make no mistake that there are MANY social obstacles in the way of indiivduals losing weight...not to mention the biological one's..... while one can turn their weight around, it is VERY difficult and as a result is not just "self inflicted" disadvantage they give themselves...yea I'm sure morbidly obese people wake up every morning and say "man how great I feel to be obese and stared at and have to worry about carrying out simple life functions that no one else bats an eye at".... and what qualifies me to make this assertion? I have been on both sides of the aisle and have done EXTENSIVE research on the topic... of course you are entitled to your opinion, but please do not be quick to dismiss mine as "wrong" |

| discrimination/sterotyping against anyone based on there current physical appearance or preferences is of course wrong in ANY instance, this one included.... HOWEVER, it is still not ok to say that being fat (or obese by any medical standards is "ok" and should just be something people accept and learn to deal with)....I have as much of a problem with that as a skinny person saying they need to lose weight..in both instances the person is giving into false consciounsness by beliving they are heatlhy or doing something healthy when they are not.... now I do know that people get carried away with "dieting" and can develop an ED (it happened to me when I quickly dropped 100+ pounds)...but I did get help for my ED and am now at a HEATLHY weight....not obese and not underweight...and here's the clencher...I don't do anything ABNORMAL or DANGEROUS anymore to keep myself this way...I just live a healthy lifestyle by eating right and exercising when I can fit it into my schedule.... no one is healthy "fat" in ANY instance |

| Young Calorie Counters | Fending off The Freshman Fifteen... | Jul 23 2008 13:32 (UTC) |

| so two years ago I was entering college as a freshmen and at the same time had been on a diet since April of my senior year...I was losing weight all spring and summer....but everyone continuosly kept reminding me that I was not only going to stop losing weight when I entered college, but gain the "inevitable" freshmen fifteen.... well that didn't happen considering during my fall semester I dropped from the 180's into the 150's..... in other words, it doesn't have to happen if you don't want it to .....amidst all the changes that occur around you, stay conscious of what you eat (and drink hahaha) and you'll be abolsutely fine and don't have to fall into this trap...of course if you don't mind and feel like it's part of the experience go for it lol |

| I know it is VERY common for my college friends...they go home, slow down with their usual exercise routine, and are happy to be eating "home" food again...not to mention all that good stuff we enjoy eating and drinking on vacation... personally though I don't like to eat as much in the summer for some reason and use the free time to exercise more....but I always put on weight in the winter for some reason, so I get mine too lol |

| Health & Support | "manarexic"...what does it mean? | Jul 19 2008 21:15 (UTC) |

| oh ok....I am guessing they just are tlaking about my mannerisms in a "joking" way over my appearance because at 153 I am not annorexic looking at all-although there really is nothing funny about saying that...ahh | |||
| Health & Support | those japanese people... | Jul 19 2008 14:25 (UTC) |
16 |
| I don't think you can take someone from a completely different culture and compare where they should be at in this regard with someone from a VERY different other culture.... for example I have lived in both the US and Italy....I have always been at a healthy BMI and am a pretty small guy, but compared to my Italian counterparts I am bigger....not because I am fat, but rather our body strctures are just completely different..... in fact when I was even medically underweight at one point I was still larger than my Italian cousins who were the same age, height, etc....if I weighed what they weighed I would look completley unhealthy and probably be dead..... like someone said, if you're a small Japanese, Italian, French, etc. person you should eat like one...if your a 6' big boned American or whatever than eat like a 6' big boned American..... and like someone said with the orange juice example....our portions and idea of a portion in the US are COMPLETELY different than other nations....I was in Italy since April and would have a little cup of espresso in the morning...now that I am home I get my large dunkin odughnuts iced coffee every morning whcih is probably equal to what I drank my whole time there hahaha |
