Too little, too late.

He was in a position to prevent much death, maiming, and destruction, but did not do so.

Gains due to eating larger portions, though logged and consciously done.  I do not seem to have increased in actual size, though.  I haven't increased scheduled exercise (in fact I've missed some) but I have increased activity, I think.  The cats have hidden my pedometer, but we've been busier at work, which does mean more running around there, up and down stairs etc.

It did...

In a better alternate universe, Shirley Chisholm would have become President in 1972.

Also, Gore Vidal would have been able to enter public service as an elected official.

Still haven't gotten into winter strength training routine yet, but riding bicycle to and from stations every work day as long as the weather holds.

I have to admit I haven't been reading this thread at all, thus I can't comment on either my progress or anyone else's.

Plateau again, but justified; I've been very hungry and have overeaten, including a qualifying binge on Indian food.  I deliberately set out to overeat, but it did not feel good so I hope I've learned something.

Again, best wishes!

I hope you do have a child, and as many as you can support!  It's wonderful to hear this from someone--that you're really _planning_ responsibly and taking everyone else into account with your decisions.

As I recall from my younger cousins, the cloth used is important.  If you can't find a service, the initial cost of the two or three dozen will be amortized over the child's use of them, and any subsequent ones as well.  A green shower would be an idea, and you could educate your friends and perhaps set up a scheme to pass the diapers, and toys and clothes as well, as needed among your group of young mothers.

I'd think the rubber pants would be necessary when the child is fully dressed and leaving the house, but you'll learn all that gradually from people with direct hands-on experience.

Best wishes!

This week: 167.0 lbs.

Last week: 170.2 lbs.

Loss: 3.2 lbs.

...more or less the same as two weeks ago, but the trend line is still descending.

yeroc: Congratulations on getting under 200#--it's a real milestone!

alexanderrob:  When I was very young, and seriously losing weight, I was resentful that men could eat more.  Needless to say, within another year or so, I'd gained back the weight I'd lost, and more.  As I get older, I'm able to accept these temporary inequities and stay willing to live this life on its own terms.  But I'm sure your wife has a more difficult time than I ever would, since it's in her face on a daily basis.  I think anything you might say would only do more harm than good--it's hard to detach when we care deeply about someone, and her well-being, but in my opinion you might find your path now is to strive for loving indifference and to detach as much as you can.

nbkelly: Congratulations on the shows, and on taking people noticing your weight loss in your stride.

***Week 4 Mini-Challenge***

I don't really have anyone out to "sabotage" me; in any case, I'm responsible for my own choices.  I do notice that the few people who tell me I've lost enough weight (when in reality my BMI is well into the overweight range) are now fatter than me.  I either don't respond, or tell them that I am actually still overweight, in a matter-of-fact way.

> So what are your reasons?

I want to be strong, mobile, and flexible enough to enjoy retirement.  As with savings, I can't start any earlier.

> How do you think your life will be different once you reach your goal weight?

I will take up less space, use fewer resources, thus being a better steward and citizen.  I'll be able to do more and have fewer physical limitations.

>  What is motivating you to move forward with this lifestyle change, as painful as it may be at times?

Desire to take care of the physical aspect of my being, and live longer.

jamminator wrote: "I want to know that I have the discipline to accomplish something that is really difficult. I've always been like this academically. I used to just ignore sports and 'active' things because I was bad at it. I just had to translate my drive into active things and losing weight.

I, too, maintained this attitude: I disdained "unnecessary" physical effort and the people who seemed to get some kind of pleasure from it.  I grew to realise that I do live in a physical body, and need it to be in good functional shape.  I still hate exercise, but am finding effective ways to get the most good from the shortest time, since I unfortunately am not able to exercise properly and read at the same time.

This week: 166.6 lbs.

Last week: 169.4 lbs.

Loss: 2.8 lbs.

This has got to be water weight loss, as I ate what I wanted Friday at lunch.  But the food choices weren't as good as the last time we were there.  I didn't bother with the bread since it was again the French-style--I had cous-cous, lamb tagine, carrots, spinach, beans, and just one glass of tea.  All in all, not bad.

Saturday I rode my bicycle to the walk, but ended up not doing it, as my co-worker didn't show up, and I started coming down with a cold.  Was sick the rest of the day, and yesterday as well.

nbkelly: Is that side-saddle?  If so, my hat's off to you.  I can only ride a Western saddle, and really only a walking horse then.  And I haven't even done that in many years.

magaroonie:  Nostaglia to the meth-head bit...sometimes I sort of think speed would be good, but I'd be afraid of the adulterated stuff passing itself off these days.

arcticmonkey:  Good wishes for school--main thing is to keep learning.  I wish I'd known how much better I'd have felt if I'd been healthier, and how much better my grades might have been.

The weekly challenge:

My most common excuse: lack of time
How to deal with it: Will just have to make time.  However, I think I may have been overdoing the strength training.  Still working on finding a viable routine.

Gain--disappointed but not terribly surprised.  My body apparently wants to weigh around 170 pounds, so I need to find some way, short of starvation (I'm exaggerating actually, but I really get hungry when I don't eat at least 1600 calories a day, and sometimes even when I do.), to convince it differently.

> Hey - anyone have any suggestions for a good movie? I need a good movie for the weekend...ANYTHING will do!

Anything by the Marx Brothers.

On another tack, I didn't do too badly at lunch today.  Of course the restaurant, although very good, doesn't have the dark barley bread I love, nor does it serve pastries, at least not at the lunch buffet.

Here's what I had:

Carrots A   64   26 Couscous, Cooked B   118   132 Potatoes, Boiled A   78   67 Spinach A   270   62 Lamb, Cubed B-   85   190 Lentils, Cooked A   99   113

For a total of 590 calories.

Of course, the sugar in the two small glasses of thé a la menthe I had would add about 31 calories.  Still not bad, though.

The staff meeting lunch Wednesday wasn't bad, either.  I had red chile with a slice of Roman Meal bread, tomatoes and lettuce, and lots of watermelon.

leanne21071: I think I'll also have to get that book (NRTLFW); I'm trying to set up a good schedule for strength training at home, and really know nothing about the entire subject.  The various posts on this site have been very helpful, though.

This week: 169.4 lbs.

Last week: 172.0 lbs.

Loss: 2.6 lbs.

This is part of my normal fluctuation, as I did not eat within my calorie range, nor did I exercise as much as I'd hoped to.

It may be impossible for me to lose 10% before Oct. 31, as I'd need a deficit somewhere over 700 daily, but I want to try just to break this plateau.

I plan to maintain a daily deficit of at least 500 calories, and incorporate more exercise on a more consistent basis.  This will be cardio three times a week, strength training three times a week, and a rest day which will ultimately include some yoga, which I haven't done for years.  I eat very well, but I do like more of it than I need.  I need an incentive to drink more water, and today I decided to pay myself a quarter for every cup, which I will put into a savings account and use to get an audio player, as it's difficult to read while standing up holding my bicycle on the train.  I almost need to sleep more.

My challenges in the upcoming week will be Wednesday, when different people bring lunch for the staff meeting, and sometimes there isn't much I want to or should eat, and Friday, when a co-worker and I are going to the Moroccan restaurant with some of her friends from her internship.  And Saturday I plan to walk in a charity walk, which actually won't be very difficult for me as it's only two kilometers.
