I'm at no risk of freezing in my house ... we're well-insulated, have lots of blankets, and a house-full of kitty cats. Heck, we often have windows open all winter long so the cats have access to their catios. I think we only turned the heater on last winter 4-5 times. Anyway ... closing blinds will help prevent the loss of warmth through windows, and if needed -- just keep confined to one room so your body heat builds up. In severe "Day After Tomorrow" sort of blizzard scenarios, a walk-in closet may be your best bet. I suppose if I got hungry enough, I could always eat dry cat food ... we have probably 80 pounds of it stockpiled, and it breaks down nice 40% protein, 40% carbs and 20% fats. I have to say, from a flavor only standpoint, the Kitten Chow is significantly tastier than the Science Diet. And I'm pretty sure that the wet food has even more protein. (Go for the chicken and turkey flavored cat food over the fishy ones, trust me.) And if I didn't want to eat the cat food, we've easily got 100+ pounds of sunflower seeds in the garage for the birds and squirrels. A sunflower seed, all by itself, has protein, carbs and fat ... pretty nifty nutrition, huh? And then there's the grapefruit tree and lemon tree out back -- those are hearty winter-harvest plants and there'd be some nice vitamin C there. And did you know that every part of the dandelion is edible? I'm having some difficulty with the food that I'm supposedly stuck with ... since we never have minced beef, microwavable rice, or tortillas in the house. We do, however, have an impressive stockpile of non-perishable foods that don't require lots of cooking ... great for those weird global emergencies. Yes, we even have Spam. Heck, I even have a nifty supply of Sugar Free Peeps -- which I'm pretty sure have a shelf-life of several hundred years. And then there's the Community Food Bank ... one can get food there. Or church food pantries. Or several rescue missions in town that serve hot meals. But I'm pretty sure my friends and neighbors would be willing to feed me, if necessary. Heck, they are always sneaking big piles of zucchini on my front porch when I'm not looking. For me ... (an insulin dependent diabetic) ... the biggest challenge will be eating the right quantity of carbs to match up with my insulin .... but if I just nibble on all those sunflower seeds and dandelions, I'll probably be just fine. |

| The Lounge | How does medical insurance work exactly? | Oct 08 2009 23:24 (UTC) |

What her insurance pays for (or doesn't pay for) depends entirely on what sort, type, and amount of health insurance she purchased. Some insurance policies have caps which limit the amount of out-of-pocket costs the insured is responsible for, other policies don't. Obviously, the better coverage policies tend to cost more than policies that don't cover as much. By the way, it works the same way for car insurance ... not all policies and companies are the same, and you get to choose (and pay for) the coverage that you want. (Some people want rental coverage, some don't. Some people want roadside assistance, some don't. Some want a high deductible, some don't. Some want $15,000 of coverage, some want $300,000 of coverage.) |

Original Post by katesorad: I am not the "attacking" type, even though I disagree with your post. We don't know whether or not he's done this sort of thing "since then" ... since he's been living (hiding) in non extradition countries most of the time. The mere fact that no other country arrested or prosecuted him doesn't mean he hasn't been having sex with 13 year olds ... it just means some countries don't prosecute for that. |

Waitpersons in California make at least the State's minimum wage ($8.00 per hour), and in San Francisco County they make at least $9.79 per hour. I know that's not a lot of money, but lots of people working retail make that, and no one gives THEM tips of 10%-20% of their purchases. I was looking at the IRS website (www.IRS.gov) and it looks like waitpersons are required to keep detailed track of their tips, and report them to their employer and the IRS so that they can be taxed on the tips that they actually receive. |

I am just wondering WHY tips seem to have gone from 10% to 15% to 20% and even more??? I really don't see that restaurant service has improved that much. I really don't see that restaurant food has improved that much. And, certainly, I don't think other industries have seen pay increases like that.

I'm happily married and my wonderful DH is currently in his 26th year of military service. I have never ever ever regretted marrying him ... and he's been on six deployments to Iraq. Some questions for you to consider... 1. Does your boyfriend want to get married? Has he proposed? Has he already named you his military life insurance beneficiary? 2. What do your parents think of this? And of him? 3. How much longer will your boyfriend be stationed in Hawaii? And are you cool with having to leave school when he gets sent somewhere else? How will being a military life (and moving every 3 years) impact your educational and career goals? 4. Is your boyfriend planning to stay in the military as a long-term career, or is this a shorter term (get money for college) sort of thing?

Mushrooms are about as low-calorie and diet-friendly as you can get ... IF you don't cook them in high-fat oil or butter. I use I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Spray or chicken broth to saute things ... works wonders! I buy fresh as well as canned mushrooms, mainly because I can't find fresh straw mushrooms around here all the time, and I love them in soups! |

We recycle. We have three trash cans that go out to the curb once per week: grey (trash); blue (recyclables); and green (green waste.) In addition, we also recycle cans and bottles separately... as well as printer cartridges. And we tend to re-use a lot of other things around the house, too .... plastic bags get used for scooping cat boxes, for example. And in the winter we save rainwater for watering plants. We are also avid Freecyclers. |
