Weight Loss I Can Make You Thin May 12 2008

EFT is akin to acupuncture but without the needles. EFT (Emotional Freedom techniques) uses the fingers to tap on a series of 12 specific points on the body that correspond to meridians used in Chinese medicine (Wikipedia). You can download the manual for free and read for yourself. I am very much a skeptic but see no harm in "tapping" the pressure points. Afterall, we don't know everything and you never know what works till you try it!

I watch a couple of his shows but was unimpressed with all hype. He does have some good suggestions though. The visualizations of your favorite food being covered with worms etc. was gross but it works for some. I mean afterall, it you envision a dog turd in your plate of pasta, would you eat it? LOL

Very interesting thread. Interesting and oh so true of how we "hang on" to our excess weight even though we know it's bad for us. I think we do "hide" behind our fat selves. We think of it as a safety net. We don't want to appeal to the opposite sex, or we want others to like us and respect us for our intellect. In some ways, it's an affirmation that our friends and family like us for us, no matter what our physical shape is.

Letting go of those mental images is hard, but as Duke says, once you finally accept yourself, you can start to shed your fears and some excess weight too.

Congrats on the weight loss and give yourself a hug today. You are a winner!

Foods "Surprise!" What food did you think you'd hate but you actually loved? Apr 22 2008

Plain yogurt, now I hate the sweetened kind! And split pea soup. I have some leftover ham in the fridge so picked up some green and yellow split peas in the whole food section yesterday. I've got a pot of soup cooking now. Will give it another go with an open mind. I think it's more of a texture thing rather than flavor, but then I am kinda the same way about peas in general. But I do love to eat them raw, straight out of the garden! Go figure.

"I can't seem to find any sugar free yogurt."

I buy plain yogurt and add flavorings or berry fruit to it. I also use it in baking too. It is a great "fat" substitute for butter called for in recipes.

Look for Nancy or Mountain High brands. You can usually find plain yogurt in small containers under your local grocery chain name brand too.

did you know that egg beaters and other egg substitute products are mainly egg whites? So I suggest buying eggs in the carton and separate yolks from the whites. Take just a minute and you save a ton of money! As I am working on getting my cholesterol down, I can have two egg yolks a week, so I have scramble eggs or whole grain homemade waffles on the weekend. Typically, 2-3 egg whites with one egg yolk makes enough egg product for two scramble egg breakfasts along with a turkey sausage patty. How yummy is that?

Just for info, I have a collection of SB friendly recipes available through Yahoo Groups (http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/SBDS-foo ds/). Lots of recipes collected for both Phase 1 and Phase 2. If posting this url is a violation, I apologize in advance, I just want to share.

Wow, what a great story. Glad to see you posting and I encourage you to post often, even it's just to Hi, I'm still here. Be sure to add "friends" and read their posts. I try to stop by every day or so and at least post my eating menu for the day, maybe a quickie recipe, or not post at all. But I always read my Friends posts. They are so inspiring and let me know that I am not alone or forgotten, and even slips are only human and no one every berets me about it.

So, I will be adding you to my friends list and invite you to do the same!

Have a most wonderful day!

I love egg flower soup and it is totally "diet" friendly. A great way to take the edge off before eating the main course. Then just add a tablespoon of this and that to your plate for a taste of your favorites. And pass on the rice! Enjoy a pot of hot tea with your meal and laugh a lot. You will have a great time!
Foods okay i m gonna ask....APPLE CIDER VINEGAR Jan 29 2008

Well, I don't buy into the weight loss myth of apple cider vinegar, but I do like to put a tablespoon each of unpasteurized apple cider vinegar (ACV) and honey in a cup and add hot water. It's delicious and both the ACV and honey have anti-bacterial properties so it can't be bad for me! As with all things, everything in moderation.

For household use, vinegar is great at cutting grease and makes a wonderful rinse for the hair!

I guess some people do take it straight from a spoon but I would rather dilute it for better drinkability and adds to my fluid intake for the day.

I always have Ghirardelli dark chocolate chips in the cupboard. 16 chips is 80 calories so I usually pop in four or five chips (that's five calories each!) and let them melt slowly in my mouth. Heavenly!Amazingly that totally satisfies me and I used to be a card carrying chocoholic!

On the oatmeal subject, have you considered cooking it the night before? Seriously, I cooked up a couple of servings, divide them into bowls, cover with plastic wrap and stick in the fridge. Then I have "instant" cereal ready for a quick nuke in the microwave to heat up when time is short in the morning. Just add milk and you are ready to eat!

Works great for my hubby too who hates to cook anything in the morning. I just take the covered bowl and place it in front of toaster. He will heat it and eat while waiting for his toast to cook.

Great job on eating smart today.

Weight Loss Special K challenge? Jan 05 2008

Special K is a rice cereal product so basically no fiber and your blood sugars will quickly spike causing you to get hungry quickly. Not a great product and the vitamins in it are added, soooooo, if you are going to consume it, consider it like a bread product and have a protein with it, like a scrambled, soft boiled, or poached egg. I am assuming you are young enough that the cholesterol in the egg isn't an issue. Yes, you add 100 calories but at least the egg has nutritional value that will be good for you.

Just a suggestion. Good luck!

Yep, toss it, I tossed ice cream, pumpkin pie already , and today I tossed out "old" veggies that hadn't been eaten yet like the limp celery and a romain lettuce that was past it's prime. I cleaned out my vegetable drawers and went shopping for fresh! Brought home, yukon potatoes, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, red bell pepper, green onions, green cabbage, fresh broccoli crowns, hubbard squash, and acorn squash. I have sweet potatoes, oranges, apples, and bananas already.

Three sacks full and all for under $30. My fridge is now fully stocked so nearly impossible to make any bad choices. I love it!

As another cheese head, I can totally relate. I tried 2% cheese but didn't care for it and it's way more expensive than the full fat cheese. I think part of the appeal is the saltiness of cheese. Anyway, I digress........ I suggest as another poster did, to have a variety of stronger flavor cheeses. And yes, I do eat full fat cheese as I think it is just more satisfying. 3/4 oz of regular cheese has the same amount of calories as 1 oz of 2%! Worth it to me.

My favorite cheeses in no particular order:

extra sharp cheddar (with a thinly sliced crisp apple)

asiago cheese (a type of Parmesan)

feta cheese for crumbling on top of salad

pepper jack cheese

mexican blend cheese

4% cottage cheese (awesome in baked potatoes with green onions mixed in!)

mozzarella cheese for homemade pizza or in a omelet.

Lite Laughing Cow swiss cheese spread

I aim to limit myself to one serving per day just like I do with nuts.

Foods Yams? Nov 26 2007

There are mainly two varieties of sweet potato. The pale sweet potato has a very thin yellow skin with a bright yellow flesh. This variety is neither sweet nor moist, but more the texture of a white baking potato. The darker skinned sweet potato (often referred to as a yam in your local megamart) has a thicker orange skin with a sweet moist flesh. Most common for the side dish with marshmallows.

BTW the sweet potatoes that have the white interior makes great oven fries!

A zillion calories!! LOL But seriously, if family members are requesting, then go ahead a get it. I suggest cutting the pieces thinly. There is no way that four people should eat a Costco pie! They are huge! I think you should be able to get at least 8 to 16 servings from one of their pies. And do have a healthier choice available. California oranges are at their peak right now and as little as $1 a pound! As for pecans, buy a bag of pecans in your produce section and pour them into a festive serving dish and don't forget the nutcrackers!

And most important, enjoy this time with your family,

Happy Thanksgiving!

Foods Please don't let Splenda products fool you. Nov 20 2007
01:52 (UTC)

I know, this is a hot topic and there are pros and cons on artificial sweeteners vs. regular sugar. Here are my comments.

Splenda is made from sugar but it is chemically changed. True

Whenever I cooked with it, my husband said it left a "metallic" aftertaste in his mouth. I can't say that, but it did have some type of aftertaste all right.

Sugar is not evil ! I decided not to use Splenda but used fructose for months. That worked out alright. Due to the high cost of fructose, I finally switched back to good old table sugar. Frankly, baked products turn out like they should and by counting calories, I am able to still lose weight. I don't use a lot anyway and use other sweeteners like honey (we have bee hives) and real maple syrup for hot cereals and baking.

I do admit to drinking "diet" pop but rarely anymore as sometimes it really upsets my stomach and gives me gas pains. Do I attribute that to the diet sweetener? Sure, I think it contributes plus the rest of the chemicals in canned cola pop. Afterall, there is no real food products in that can!

So I have plain water or fruit juice instead, but every now and then, that cola beverage just hits the spot!

Opinions expressed here are mine alone and what I find that works best for me.

Hugs,

Joyce

To cellulitedelite,

Go ahead and enjoy the meal with extended family, just limit yourself to a tablespoon or so of foods you really don't want to overdo it on and fill up on fresh salads and veggies instead! Consider having water instead of sugary beverages or maybe, hot tea!  And skip the dessert or if you must, just have three bites, then exercise your options and push the plate away!

Invite your family members to join you in a post dinner walk if possible. Or at least your fiance! Hand holding is a great stress reliever and kissing burns calories!

Hugs,

Joyce

Weight Loss Stop eating in front of the tube: Attack of the KILLER SNACKS Nov 19 2007

One of our favorite evening snacks is a handful of nuts in shell, ie: walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds. Bagged nuts can be found plentiful in your fresh produce section of your grocery store.  Avoid canned nuts in your snack isle, they are full of processed fats and salt.

Another fall type snack that I love is a juicy apple that I slice up and either dip the slices in plain peanut butter OR one ounce of extra sharp cheddar cheese.

Nuts are good for you but are calorie and fat dense, so portion control is necessary. A handful of nuts is about one ounce worth or one serving.

And yes to the pretzels! I love the big Sndyer ones! Also if you want a "salty" snack, how about a dill pickle? No way to overeat those! LOL

1) Fresh hot espresso latte and a hot homemade muffin!

2) Pot of green tea with orange slices.

3) "Bake" a cored apple with tabls of raisins in it and dust with pumpkin pie spice. Can top with sf pancake syrup. Cover and microwave till fork tender.

4) A real baked potato (not microwaved). Add cottage cheese and green onions for a protein boost. It's good!

5) Canned chicken noodle or tomato soup. The whole can is about 150 calories! Use 1% milk instead of water and adjust calories for tomato soup. Another favorite is Manhattan Clam Chowder!

Weight Loss Feeling discouraged Nov 10 2007
22:51 (UTC)

Wow! What a great menu! Good job.

A thought on the Diet Pepsi, contains sodium and chemicals that your body doesn't need. I read somewhere that by drinking sweet tasting diet sodas you are signaling to your body that you are consuming sugary carbs and then nothing! The brain says "Hey, where's my mid-afternoon sugar fix?" and the cravings set in. I think there is some truth to it plus soda dehydrates rather than hydrates. So why not try an ice cold bottle of spring water? Will quench your thirst and you will feel good about the change. Rather than going cold turkey, try having soda every other day with water in between. It's the baby steps that will lead you to a healthier and longer life.
