It sounds like your friend is having a very normal pregnancy!!  I also had heartburn and it was terrible.  Probably the worst part about being pregnant for me.  Oh, and the terrible pelvic pain, the kicking from inside while I was trying to sleep... the weight gain.  I also didn't really like being pregnant.  It's not a pretty time, and you don't feel great.  So just remind her that it will be over eventually!

I am having the hardest time losing weight after the birth of my son, and that was about 5 months ago.  I've really only lost about 15 lbs or so.  I'm so frustrated!!  According to just about every calorie calculator I have seen, I should be able to eat 3000 calories a day to maintain.  I'm trying for about 2200 a day and the weight is NOT coming off and I'm always hungry.  I do have a big baby though!

I would be totally into having a weight loss accountability group!  I need some help!

My five month old son is proof that the pull out method doesn't work forever!! :)

 

I would recommend getting an IUD.  The one I have is non-hormonal, it is a physical barrier against implantation.  So no side effects, no nothing.  I have heard that they can make the first few periods you have with it in a little more crampy than usual, but I'm still breastfeeding & haven't had a period yet so I can't say for sure.  I'm really happy with it though, no pills to forget, no weight gain.

This is so where I'm at right now.  I gained 40 lbs while I was pregnant and I still have 35 to lose! I'm working out regularly and eating right.  I feel like my body is hanging on to every pound.  I'm breastfeeding, too, so I don't want to drop calories too radically and have my supply suffer.  But I hate not fitting into my pre-pregnancy jeans, not too mention all the front-button shirts that no longer fit over my boobs.

My baby is 4 months now and my trick to having time to workout is doing it at home.  I use a combination of weights/cardio (I use kettlebells - not too many people are familiar with them), it takes me exactly one hour to get a full workout in.  I'm lucky that my husband will take the baby for that hour or take him to day care early so I can have this time.  We both also work full-time.  I use weekend days to make sure I get a workout in because my husband is usually off work, but I work Saturdays.

Many, many days I don't feel like exercising but I try to get at least four days a week in because I always feel better after and I know it helps a lot with stress.  On my off days I'll go for a long brisk walk or just make sure to be very active at home with laundry and cleaning. 

It's so hard to be a mom and have that time to make sure you are healthy!!  It's hard not to beat yourself up about it when it doesn't happen, too!

My husband's mother went to high school with a woman named Polly Esther Cote.

When I was getting towards the end of my pregnancy, I told my husband that if the baby turned out to be a girl (we had an ultrasound and they told us it was a boy), we were going to name her Surprise.

We went in for our 4 month check up and the pediatrician told me that she didn't think I would have to supplement.  She said that around 3-4 months, most women start to think they're going to have to, but then the supply goes up.  So I'm holding out.  I'm taking 2 capsules of Fenugreek four times a day, drinking Mother's Milk tea, and taking another herbal supplement called Mother's Lactation Tonic.  I think it's working: sometimes when I pump I get 3 oz, sometimes 5 oz.  She also told me that I should be taking enough Fenugreek that my pee starts to smell like maple syrup. 

My real question comes down to this: can I eat at a deficit enough to lose weight and not have my supply suffer?  It seems like enough new moms lose weight after pregnancy that it's possible.  I do exercise a lot and have been eating around 22-2400 calories a day to gradually lose the weight.

I totally agree with the poster above.  I work in a health food store as the supplement buyer -- it's my job to sell these detoxes, but unless someone walks in my store specifically for a cleanse, I just tell them to eat well, drink water, don't drink coffee or alcohol and they'll feel better in no time.  That's the main reason people feel better on those cleanses.  They may be taking 10 pills a day but it's the clean eating/drinking that really helps.  And exercise!

take naps! LOL.  My baby is 4 months now and while my husband and I go to bed at 10-11 and get up at 6 or 7 am, we're still waking up at least twice a night for feeding.  Babes sleeps in our room and when he wakes we just have to grab him from the crib and I nurse him laying down and usually I can fall back asleep while he eats.  That has been key for us.  We're waking up, but not for too long so it doesn't feel like I'm constantly awake.  Sometimes I don't remember getting up, even.  I would recommend the laying down nursing for sure.  Usually we all just keep sleeping in the bed together until morning.  There have been a few nights here and there when babes will sleep for 5-6 hours, but those are few and far between.  But I can see the light and it's getting better and easier to deal with.

 

You can do it!!  Good thing they're so cute, right?  The things we do for them!  (This after changing the biggest blowout I've seen in a while and smiling the whole time at my cutsey, poopy baby)

When I got pregnant, it was at the tail end of a 2 year weight loss that had finally gotten me down to a healthy weight and I was terrified of gaining it all back, too.  Sounds like you already have established good habits, which will help.  The most important thing, though, is to accept the fact that you're going to gain weight.  20 lbs or so of it will be gone the moment your  baby is out of you.  If you are planning on breastfeeding (do it!) you can count on burning about 500 extra calories per day.  Just keep up your good habits and don't give in to too many cravings, and you'll be fine.  It will come back off, eventually.  In my case, it's been harder to lose it the first time around, but I know it's going to happen.  Maybe that's not exactly what you wanted to hear, but your body is going through something extraordinary and you have to stay healthy to make it though.

I think my main problem is that I quit counting calories when I was pregnant.  I only gained about 40 lbs, but have only lost about 15lbs of that.  I was very active during my pregnancy and only stopped working out (but still walking and doing easy stuff) at about 38 weeks.  Before I was pregnant I would eat about 2000 calories to maintain, if, like poster #1, I cut down to 1500 calories I would probably pass out.

I'm just frustrated because it is seemingly harder to lose now that it was before.  Also, I'm mad at myself for getting bigger again.  I'm pumping at work and breastfeeding when I'm with him, and I just barely have enough to keep him from formula so that's why I worry about supply.  I want to keep him breastfed as long as possible.

I was about to write this whole long post about how hard labor and delivery can be on your body, and then I read your post again and realized that you said you'd already had kids.  So you know.  I would say that if you feel like it, go for it, but listen to your body and take it slow.  I know I wouldn't have been able to work out so soon after having my son, but only you know your body.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too.  My mom has owned a day care center for twenty five years and she says the same thing.  Pediatrician clients of hers have her put thier baby on its stomach to sleep, so it can't be the terrible thing it's made out to be.

Chiropractors are wonderful at turning babies.  My guy was transverse until about 37 weeks and after a few visits to the chiro, he turned head down.  Find yourself a pre-natal chiropractor and see what they can do for you.

My baby is 5 weeks old and will not sleep in his crib.  He startles himself awake constantly, so we keep him in our bed at night.  When he startles himself awake and I (or daddy) are next to him, he calms right back down.  I wish that it was okay to let him sleep on his belly - he sleeps soundly that way and I think it's soothing for his tummy.

 

We plan on doing this as long as we're all comfortable with it, but it seems like the natural thing for us now.

Yes!!  Exercise!  I kept up what I was doing (cardio, weight training) until about 38 weeks.  Then I just got too big and decided that I wanted a break.  I still walk (now I'm at 41 weeks... yaaaaaay).  I can't tell you how much it has helped my pregnancy: no weird mood swings, energy, feeling like even though I'm gaining weight I'm still healthy.  I love exercise and can not imagine nine months without.

Talk to your midwife/OB just to get the green light but they'll tell you that you can do whatever you were doing before pregnancy.  And then do it -- it's good for you and it's also really good for your baby.

I could change this thread title to "a week overdue!"

I know, I know... it happens to lots of expectant mothers, but it's just so frustrating!!  I'm doing what I can do, sex, spicy foods (not that I think that works, but I do like spicy foods!), not interested in the castor oil, foot rubs, etc... nothing.  Some mild cramping in my back, slight tings of pain & braxton-hicks...  Sheesh!

Going in for an ultrasound tomorrow to make sure baby is still happy, amniotic fluids are still good and placenta is still healthy.  Good lord, if I have to wait another week...  I really don't know what I'm going to do!

 I also like What to Expect.... and I absolutely HATED The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy.  I hated the tone and I echo what the above poster said about how the author described her husband.  Also some of the things that she says happen in the delivery room and after, like how the nurses will give your baby glucose water and a pacifier so just deal with that - where I am delivering they specifically say that they never do that unless you're absolutely okay with it.  I don't know, it just kind of rubbed me the wrong way.  There's just so much information out there that after about three months, I just gave up on trying to learn more and just focused on how I was feeling.

This is kind of an old thread, but since someone replied recently, I'll keep going...

I am super aware of what I say around this friend because I don't want to upset her.  I'm a Midwestern Scandinavian so the way I deal with intense emotions is by being stoic and quiet.  I talked with her about the miscarriage but only when it was clear that she wanted to talk about it.  I have never gone on about anything relating to my pregnancy around her and have only talked about it when prompted.  In fact, right after I told her I was pregnant she and her husband had us over for dinner to celebrate, so I thought everything would be okay for us.

But, alas, it's been almost my entire pregnancy and she still doesn't seem to want to be friends - maybe it's totally unrelated to my pregnancy, maybe not. I'm starting to feel resentful towards her because I could really use friends right now and she's simply not around.  And that makes me feel terrible.

Anyway, patience is key, I guess.

I have to agree with holynut - don't worry about calories when you're pregnant.  I'm at 31 weeks now, and I was trying to count calories for a little while at first, but it's hard to get out of the weight loss mode.  I was finding that I was so concerned with gaining weight and calories that I maybe wasn't eating all that great, and probably not enough.  The fact is, you're going to gain weight, so just try to eat good food.  If your doc/midwife says that you're gaining too much, eat less.  You will lose the weight afterwards.  Plus, now is the only time in your life when you're allowed to pretty much eat whatever.  I would never eat stuff like muffins or ice cream before, but now I allow myself to have stuff like that occasionally.  Pregnancy is hard and there's no reason to make it harder.

I read recently in What to Expect When You're Expecting that women who exercise during pregnancy tend to have smarter babies (the kids score well on IQ tests in the future, which could be due to other factors as well) but also their babies tend to get less stressed out by labor and delivery.  So there's two more reasons to exercise when you're pregnant!

I think the main no-no is simply that it's a raw meat.  Pregnant women are not supposed to consume raw animal products because of risk of bacteria.  I also am pregnant, only 16 weeks, and I really miss sushi!!  I do get the vegetarian kind sometimes, just to fill in the void.  It helps!  You should be able to eat sushi again once you've had your baby.

Congratulations!  Let me tell you, I was in the same boat - except that me and my husband had just decided that we didn't think we ever wanted kids and seriously like a week later.... surprise!

It's early for you so you have lots of time before anyone knows you're pregnant, and maybe lots of time before you even feel pregnant.  If you don't have morning sickness (I never did, and I wanted it because I thought that it would make me feel more pregnant) or any of the usual symptoms you'll just feel like normal for a few months.  Relish that time, because nothing is going to be normal for you after that.  :)

Trust your instincts!!  Don't freak out over every little weird feeling (there will be lots of those), but don't be afraid to get in touch with your doctor/midwife if you have questions. 

Start exercising and eating really good, if you don't already.  I was cleared to keep up with my exercise routine and it's become so important to me as I am finally starting to get bigger and bigger.  And don't freak out when first your regular jeans start to feel snug, and then your "I only wear these when no one's looking" jeans start to feel snug.  Eat well so you know that you're doing everything you can to be healthy.

And relax.  For sure.  Spend some time just sitting on the couch and thinking about your baby, or take a leisurely walk and just zen out.  You need to be as stress free as possible and it's a good time to delegate stuff to your husband.  He should be happy to cater to your every whim.

If you know you don't want kids, DEFINITELY you need to be on birth control, very very aware of your cycle, or open to the idea of a surprise pregnancy.  I kid you not, my boyfriend of 8 years and I had a conversation one day where we decided we were never going to have kids.  We like disposable income, we like to travel, we like to only have responsibilities for ourselves.  Not one week later, I was pregnant.  And I was also just like you, thinking that the birth control methods we were using seemed reliable. (a combination of the natural planning - my periods were so regular you could have set your watch to them, and the "it's never happened before, how could it happen now?!" approach)

 

We're happy now and I never for a moment thought about not keeping the baby, but it was a surprise and we're still dealing with the idea and what comes with it.

I am the same way!  I was craving a tuna melt so bad one day I made my boyfriend go out and get all the ingredients for it.  Now, I can't imagine eating one.  I also had a serious falafel craving ONCE and now I don't ever want it again.  Some food aversions, but luckily not to veggies.  I think it usually goes away by week 12 or so.
