| Weight Loss | Has losing a significant amount of weight changed the way you socialize? | Nov 19 2008 19:31 (UTC) |
16 |
Yes & in ways you wouldn't believe. I lost over 40lbs & people have never been meaner to me in my whole life. There is a clique of moms at my son's kindergarten who WILL NOT SPEAK TO ME! I've never seen these women before in my life but when ever I say Hi or good morning - they are F'ing Queen Bees. |

| Maintaining | Will you ever be normal? | Nov 19 2008 15:42 (UTC) |

Been at this for over 1yr & I have to say yes you will be or already are Normal<tm>. You're quesitoning the rational of counting every calorie & thats a good thing. But one item I would like to touch on in this topic is that our food is *NOT* Normal. It's filled w/chemicals, steroids, HFCS & transfat <shelf life>. Maybe instead of counting cals we should focus on making healtier choices so that it's not so easy to gain so much d@mn weight. I'd also like to have the FDA held responsible for all the garbage they call "food". Did anyone else read today that Healthy Choice frozen meals have been recalled because of "Plastic pieces"?!?! WTF! the packages were even inspected!!! It's time for the consumer to start demanding that our Gov. take our health seriously. |

| Fitness | morning work outs | Nov 19 2008 14:27 (UTC) |

My understanding is that if you work out in the morning your body will tend to torch more calories through out the day. <Is this true? I have no idea> Regardless - I have stuck to my morning routine for over a 1yr. By doing so I've kept off the 30lbs that I originally lost & feel great. I prefer to jog in the early AM before breakfast. Post jog: I eat a high fiber cereal w/1 cup no fat milk & 20gs of raisins = 235 cals. |

I'm 5'4 my thighs are currently 19 inches. I ride my bike, jog, do single leg lunges & rotational lunges with shoulder press. But the most important thing is my *Diet*. I have cut out all Trans fats & HFCS. Meanwhile I've increased my intake of good fats, high quality lean meats, fruits/veggies & No fat Milk. Along with an occasional glass of red wine. Daily Cal intake is 1,700 Good luck you can do it

| Karak = Cup A
You want no boobs? Simple reduce your calorie intake. Since breasts are made mostly of fat they will be the first to go. My daily cal are approx 1,700 if you stick to that for over 4 months <depending on your current weight> your breasts will be gone. |

| Hey OP - Check out Marshalls or TJ Max. I bought some weights & a stabilty ball there for around $20.00 total. They also have some great books at seriously reduced prices. Always check out the "cleance stuff" - you never know what you might find.
Some one already mentioned thrift stores & I have to agree w/them. They are a grea resouce that shouldn't be over looked. Good Luck! K |

| I go in the stall simply because I want personal space. I want to hang my stuff up on the hook & have a moment to cool off. Some time I just stand in the stall do a little nekkid yoga/stretching. Besides it would look funny to someone who didn't understand what I was doing. | |||

| So you want to lean-out <right?>
1. buy a food scale - measure every bite you eat 2. no more & NO less 1600 cals per day <since you are 5'3> 3. Eat high quality protein - Might want to check out Super H <Korean Super Store> Forget the exact cross street - not far from Mid Town. They have really interesting soy products 4. I'd hit the pool nearly every day but watch out for the chlorine. It'll crisp your hair 5. Start your food/exercise journal if you already haven’t – you will be surprised at what you will learn about yourself. Sounds like what you are doing is right on target. But you aren't eating @ reg intervals. Basically your body needs to know it's going to be fed the right stuff at the same time This is my usual <basic daily menu> 6am: coffee w/28g High Fiber cereal & 1cup No Fat milk Post jog: Trader Joes - Soy Protein Powder2 scoops Mid Morning Snacks: 40g raisins, 28gs walnuts, carrots Lunch: usually roasted chicken salad or Tuna <depends on what is left over from dinner. Everything is tossed into a big bowel of leafy spinach, roasted red peppers & 2 tps of Extra Virgin Olive Oil Mid afternoon snack: Seasonal Fruit - right now 90gs of peaches <soon will be figs> Dinner: **Grilled lean fresh cuts of meat or fish, 2 servings of fresh veggies & a glass of red wine Evening snack: Seasonal Fruit ** Serving of Meats & fish change depending on cut. I will eat a whole salmon steak & not feel guilty if I go over my cal count. But will cut meat down to size depending on type. The key is consistency & fresh products. One last bit of info - cut all High Fruitos Corn Syrup out've you diet. It's nasty stuff & causes me to bloat. |

Thanks everyone! I wonder if I still have a lot of leftover sprinting muscles or just run too many hills since where I run is extremely hilly, but I don't really think my thighs are very muscular- more just...large. Been running a 3K every other day in Nova VA (It's very hilly here). Since joining CC - I started drinking Trader Joe's Soy Protein Powder <120 cals> after every run. I've found that the added protein feeds the muscle w/out adding much fat. Reexamine what you are fueling your body with before/after you run. P.S. Trader Joe's Soy protein powder tastes nasty but it's one of the best out there. |

| Compound movements, on the other hand, use several different (larger) muscles - things like squats, deadlifts, lunges, bench press, rows, lat pulldowns, military press - these are going to be more effective for strength training.
Compound sets are my absolute favorite To further elaborate – Two exercises down back-to-back that work opposing muscles groups such as “biceps & triceps” “Chest & back” My second fav is Drop Sets Multiple sets of one exercise using different weights in a descending pattern. By decreasing weights & continuing to work out – the boy recruits the reserve muscle <twitch> fibers & nerves that have not fired yet. |

| sooji what do you do when you go out with your friends and eat ?? come on, it's not like you're going to bring ur food scale wherever you go, right?!
This is a 2 part question for me & you'll see why Part 1. Last year when the first time I got serious about dieting <YIKES> I would only eat out at certain places. Restaurants that I knew served healthier foods <no fast foods or Franchise sit down places> That way eating out would become a reward. <make sense?> These are not the type of places you go to worry about calories cause they are very expensive. Part 2. A year later I will actually eat McD's <gasp> with my kids *BUT* only on rare occasions when I want to treat the kids to a little surprise. I still avoid *all* Franchise sit down places because they are so unhealthy. I've lost some friends but inspired others. Now that they see the results they understand how important good nutrition is they made changes to their own calorie intake |

| I know sooji but I was desperate. It was the only thing I hadn't tried. Then my Hubby told me to buy a food scale. I thought it was stupid & wasn't worth the $$$. But one day at Target I checked them out & bought the cheap $5 scale. It honestly has changed my life. I still get to eat everything I always did but it helped me learn what a "serving size" is & how many cals I was over eating. | |||

| Frustrated11 - tell your friend to buy a tape measure & start writing down the numbers. If she doesn't like'em big, then tell her to change her routine & more importantly her diet. If they lean out - she can keep track of what works & ditch the rest. | |||

| Forgot about the "ab" question
I would seriously work on your diet & controlling your calorie intake before doing all the crazy ab reps. One thing dork boy didn't mention is that "great abs" all genetics. If you are blessed to have them then flaunt it. But if you aren't blessed then don't worry about it. |

| Kick that dork to the curb.
When I started calorie count <approx 1yr ago> I weighed 140lbs. Today I weigh 115lbs. Want to know how I did it. ***1. measured all of my food*** 2. logged it on here 3.jogged lifted weights/Kettlebells & a bit of pilates. The most important thing you need to do to lose weight is keep track of what's going in your mouth. Also, women can & should lift weights for bone density. Sexy girly muscles never hurt:) |

| Fitness | Cardio twice a day? | Aug 06 2008 15:52 (UTC) |

| Gotta remember now that you weigh less <congrats> it is harder to lose. When I first started my calorie deficit - I lost weight right away then hit the wall & couldn't lose any more. Instead of more cardio or encreasing my workout time - I broke it up to 2 times a day. That way I wasn't over doing it but still got my heart rate up twice a day. I also modified my exercise routine & added 15lbs. Kettlebells.
I agree w/jonesml - measuring yourself is the best way to really see progress. |

| I'm a lift to failure girl. So if I can do 4 sets of 15 reps w/out failure then it's time to change up. Another idea is to buy a 15lb <or heavier> kettlebell & do different exercises. As long as you are eating a healthy diet - I wouldn't worry about being "Bulky". I have a great deal of muscle but since I'm lean - the term bulky <Actually bloated w/fat over muscle> is not applicable. | |||

| Been running for years - thighs never increased or really decreased. It wasn't until I started riding my bike every day & created a calorie defecit that my legs leaned out. Also love to do split squats http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkgfJ3sEtzU. When I measured my thighs 2months ago month they were 20 inches - today they are 19 inches. I can not stress it enough - if you want leaner thighs you are gonna have to work really hard on a healthy diet & keep the cals down to <NO LESS> then 1,700. Remember: you have to feed those muscles - that means lots of lean cut meats, protein, nuts, no/low fat milk & leafy greens. | |||

| PaigeyLou - I lost 25lbs & never set foot in a gym. It was all calorie deficit, exercising at home & jogging in the neighborhood.
I joined Calorie count, bought weights from the thrift store, then subscribed to Runners World & Oxygen Mag (so I could teach myself how to have correct form). Also agree with everyone who suggested buying really good running shoe & can't stress enough to say "ONLY" use those shoe for running. Good luck! |

| 2. I have a comfortable seat, and I experience no pain when I ride. The problem is when I get OFF the seat. I experience sharp, extreme pain that kind of shoots from where my bottom touches the seat and up into the top part of my bottom. Then, for the next hour or two, it hurts to sit down. Anyone know what could cause this? Like I said, no pain during the ride, but I dread getting off at the end.
Could be Piriformis Pain - I've had it & it's the worst thing you can imagine. http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-241-286-289-12630-0,0 0.html The piriformis muscle lies deep behind the gluteals and is responsible for the external rotation of the hip joint. When the muscle becomes too tight, it can impinge on the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body, which supplies the lower extremities with motor and sensory function. The resulting pain often radiates from the buttocks, down the thigh, and up into the spine. Highly recommend reading the article & learning how to strengthen this muscle. |

| You are right! It's time to change your routine. I change mine every 2 weeks. Let me suggest looking into Pilates/Yoga for 2 weeks then switch back to something more Cardio intense. You can usually pick up a Pilates book on remainder @ Boarders.
Lastly when I hit a plateau I decided to kick it up a notch by adding cardio in the afternoon. Once I got my heart rate up 20 mins twice a day the last 10lbs came off. It's a lot of work but it all depends on how bad you want it. |

I may sound crazy but I honestly believe that our food is poisoned w/sat fats, trans fats & High Fructose Corn Syrup. All of those "things" are added to increase shelf life. Just think of how long that **** stays in your system. |
