If I think about giving up, I think to myself, "If I quit watching what I eat, I'll end up gaining." Even if I try to maintain my weight, at least I'm at a standstill versus gaining. I'd rather lose a little or nothing at all than gain. That's how I think about it!

People are at the gym to work out, not gossip about others' weight. No offense but I think it's a little self absorbed to think that people would talk about YOU instead of focusing on their own weight loss efforts. Those girls probably really thought they needed to lose some more weight. Maybe they have to work out for hours a day and eat really poorly? Maybe they needed guidance so WW was a good idea?

I've seen women three times my size working out and you know what I think? "Good for them" and not "Wow, look at her!"

If you up your calories, you may see a gain (since you were eating too little before) but it'll pass and you'll probably start losing again. I was eating too little, upped my calories, and started seeing the weight go down! Good luck!

Food scales are great! I thought a 6 oz piece of meat was 3 or so when I was eyeballing!

I've found that cereal is a waste of calories for me because it doesn't fill me up. I'll be starving an hour or two later. I've switched to egg whites and I can eat the same amount of calories and be twice as full.

I try and limit my pasta intake to once a week.

Try Googling "body frame calculator" and actually measure your wrist and elbow breadth. The "wrist trick" too left me wondering if I'm small or medium frame. I think a calculator is more exact.

And no, you look fine for your height/weight but if losing a bit of weight will make you feel better, go for it :)

Walking doesn't do me any good for me. Wish it did!

I have that red shirt but in green!

I remember where I used to work, I'd eat a small salad with light dressing, some carrots on top, a couple olives, and yogurt as "dessert". I love how you eat healthy and get flack for it! "Salad again? What are you, a rabbit?"

I used to have this problem with cooking too. The meats were never fully cooked, I usually had to remake dinner twice, etc.

I just kept cooking and cooking and cooking and within a couple weeks, I really started understanding it. It's really helped with my weight loss and I couldn't live on frozen foods forever!

If you have to cook for two, just cook for yourself and let your spouse fend for himself if he has a problem with what you're cooking. That's what I do however I know generally what my fiance won't eat so I try to avoid those things.

I used to attend the Y in my old town and they had a "sliding scale" payment system based on what you earn. They'll use your last W2 to determine how much you pay. My membership went down half as a result!
Weight Loss Anyone at 1200 cal/day? Feb 28 2008

What I used to do was eat a serving and a half of Cheerios and a glass of orange juice. That came to about 350 calories and two hours later, I was starving! I switched to egg whites for breakfast and at half the calories, I'm twice as full. That way, I have more calories to eat for dinner and an after dinner snack!

Since I've cut down on carbs, I've realized how far my calories can go! I used to eat oatmeal or cereal for breakfast but it never filled me up and it would total up to at least 200 calories! I switched to egg whites and can use so many less calories!

Is the Fitness Challenge the one where you go for x amount of days a week?

jennmcc, I really do need to get my behind moving! I'm usually not this lazy, I swear. I used to be a competitive swimmer in middle/high school, quit before I went to college, and I just let the laziness take over. I usually work out in the summer and then winter is another story... sounds like you know what I mean!

I know that losing at 1200 without exercise won't last but I figured I'd try it while I can :)

msrobbyn, no offense taken. I'm not depressed; just new to the town and I've been bored lately so I sleep a lot. (Some people require more sleep and if I don't get at least 8.5, I feel horrible.) I used to get about six or so before I moved.

ohio45, I use sparkpeople to track my food intake. I'm always way over on my protein intake (I love eggs!) and hardly ever over on my carbs or fat. I've been really good at tracking my food. I used to hate to do it but I figured I need to if I want to do this right!

jenmcc, I can't tell you if my metabolism is trashed or not. Again, I've only been eating this 950-1200 diet for a week now. I used to eat pretty poorly the previous weeks, ate about 2000 a day, and had the same lifestyle. It was pretty much pasta and pizza every day. Bleh.

alicandra, you made a very good point about the body adjusting. I leave this place for a couple months and I forgot all these points! Thank you!

stef211, I should exercise :P

amyvalentino, sounds like we're in the same boat! I read your journal and your bio. I was afraid it would sound like I'm anorexic as well, not consuming at least 1200! I can remember when I was working and 1200 sounded like so little! At least you're a mom so you have someone to run around after :)  I lost four pounds in the first week but two of those were on the first day. I tried the South Beach Diet (the only "fad" diet I've ever tried) and yeah, I only lasted one day. I'm not a big carb person but I can't live without fruit! I couldn't have made it two weeks without fruit. However, if you take a look at Phase 1 of the SBD, I think it really grasps what you should and shouldn't eat. You should limit yourself on carbs and certain fruits and really take in as much good protein and veggies as you can. It's nice, for me, to have a list of things instead of just saying, "Eat protein, fruits, and veggies." I had pasta on Friday and potatos on Sunday. Only "bad" carbs I've had thus far! Good luck to you too!
Weight Loss How I broke my plateau... sleep! Oct 07 2007

denise07 -- I started sleeping less on the weekends after I was tired of getting pestered by my boyfriend because I "slept too much." He can get six or seven hours of sleep and be perfectly fine. I, on the otherhand, need a lot more than that. I told him to quit giving me flack for sleeping "a lot" (nine hours) because we (myself and my body) obviously need it!

deflepfan16 -- Congrats on breaking your plateau!

nicolek6 -- I totally understand your point. However, if I weigh myself at nights (before bed) after having not gotten enough sleep the previous nights , I still weigh the same and never break my plateau :(

spudlewski -- I hear you on that. I never got a lot of sleep in college (probably five or six hours a night) so I understand where you're coming from. I definitely slacked off in college and that's where I gained all my weight so it's a good thing you're watching it now instead of after!

Don't worry about going over tonight. Tomorrow is another day! Just don't make it a habit.

You mentioned you're doing light exercise. Maybe you can do moderate exercise or exercise more than you currently are. Perhaps that will break your plateau.
Weight Loss Elliptical to swimming laps to plateau? Sep 27 2007

I agree with you, kristinedaqueen. I just got really frustrated at gaining a true pound and a half back (quit exercising during a stressful week at work), started losing it by swimming, and then I got stuck at this "plateau".

Thank you for the encouragement. I just need to quit worrying so much and try harder.

Wow, I think I could have done your workouts when I was, say, 18 and conditioned, but not anymore :) Props to you!

I never did anything in practice but breast and free because I was so bad at back and fly. I was the best at breast and am quite proficient in the stroke, however, if I'm casual at it, I'm quite slow but if I'm fast, I swim like I'm competing.

I could be eating plenty but I could not be working hard enough, you know?

Thanks so much for the great information. I think I'm being too easy on myself at times. Just because I swim for a good amount of time doesn't mean my body's going to respond. I'll try the workout you posted above tonight and see how it goes.

CC says to eat 1800/day but everywhere else gives me 1550. Hope that isn't confusing you too much.

I ended up eating 400 calories over on 9/25 but it was my "cheat" meal of the week and this was on day three of my plateau. I expected an increase in my weight but that was okay by me. I ended up going from 144.6 to 145. I ate well yesterday and within my calorie range, exercised, and was up .4 this morning. I'm not mad or discouraged because I know these things happen but I assume it may be due to sodium. It's just weird that when I wasn't counting my calories two years ago and swimming regularly, I never hit plateaus and was always losing *shrugs*

So do you do 25 fast and then 50 easy your entire workout time or just occassionally throughout your workout?

Are you asking if I'm a tiny person or if I may be someone else on this board?

According to many sites, I need 1550 to lose 1-2 pounds per week. CC says I need 1800/day to lose by February (their date, not mine).

I log my laps as moderate because I've always swam at moderate speed, even when I was swimming competitively. I never liked swimming fast because I'd rather swim for longer and slower than faster and a shorter distance.

I don't want to lose it really fast but I hated seeing one pound weekly loses here and there.

Thanks for your reply!

Thanks, amoren.

I'm having so many problems understanding how many calories I need. I went from 1200 to 1400. The machine also says I burn 400 calories per 40 minutes so does that mean I need 1600? I'm 25, 5'6" and about 148 pounds.

I HAVE to exercise or my weight doesn't move. I can eat 1200 calories a day, not exercise, and I lose about half a pound a week.

In my opinion, as long as someone's doing something about their weight, no one should care what they're wearing. That's how I look at it at least. I know that there are skinnier girls than me at the pool or on the cardio machines... but I'm doing something about my weight so that's all that matters!
