Health & Support feeling at a loss and afraid i may crash and burn Dec 30 2008

Yeah, I feel the same way right now. I'm eating 1200 calories a day, though sometimes I suspect that I eat a few hundred less. And that's not factoring in the 45 minutes I do on the treadmill four times a week. I'm nearly 15% underweight and my parents and friends are getting worried. I'm getting worried. I'm nearly always thinking about food and when and what I'm supposed to eat next. I eat the same food at the same time every day and get irritated when I need to make changes for social reasons. I'm too fussy about counting calories; I have to debate with myself over every single baby carrot I eat.

I don't want to lose any more weight. But I'm paranoid that if I eat even an extra apple a day, my body won't take it and I'll gain.

Maintaining 5'2 ladies around 100lbs: Dec 26 2008

Stats: I'm 17 (turning 18 in January), currently 90lbs and am exactly 5'2" on the dot.

Calories: Around 1200 a day. I can't say for sure, because my parents cook my dinner and they never bother to weigh their meat and vegetables. We also eat this mysterious Chinese bun once in a while that I don't know the stats of. But we don't fry and I stay away from stir-fry as much as possible, so I'm pretty sure the dinner calories are around 400.

Foods: high-fibre cereal/oatmeal and granola bars in the morning, home-made sandwich with whole wheat bread for lunch, water-based soup or noodles for dinner, something like 3 apples (or other fruits) thrown in throughout the day.

Exercise: I run on the treadmill for 45 minutes 4 times a week at approximately 6.5 miles per hour. Sometimes I replace one of the sessions with interval training (which is supposed to be good for weight loss), but I'm thinking of cutting that out of my routine because I just need to maintain and I really hate doing it.

Weight Loss How ppl treat you before and after weight loss Dec 25 2008

I feel like I get more attention and respect than I used to, or maybe it's just because I feel more confident about myself and project my opinions more now that I've lost weight (or maybe it's the respect that precedes the confidence.) But yeah, basically I get noticed more and get more comments about how I look and dress. I find that people listen to me more and initiate more conversations with me. My friends also treat me differently; they no longer poke at my sides and joke about my flabby arms. And I feel like they look up to me now for what I've accomplished, rather than down.

Weight Loss How much does metabolism actually vary? Dec 25 2008
22:14 (UTC)

The thing about metabolism is that it's still pretty much a mystery to everyone. It depends on your genes, really.

I have a friend who's still skinnier than me even though I eat 1200 calories a day and exercise 4 days a week, and she eats at least double that with barely ANY exercise. I've read magazine articles about people who can't seem to get a healthy BMI reading no matter how healthily they eat or how much they exercise.

Of course, there are things you can do to improve your metabolism (ie. exercise, eat fibre, break meals into smaller, more frequent meals). But other than that, the bottom line is that you're basically stuck with what you've got.

The Lounge What did YOU get for Christmas this year? Dec 25 2008

I'm totally in love with this pair of fuzzy slippers I got from a friend for Christmas. They're not only cute but warm too. I simply love wearing them. The same friend bought me two books that I really enjoyed reading (yup, finished with them already :D ). I also love this shirt that another friend bought me. I haven't worn t-shirts for ages and I was surprised at how nice it looks on me! Now I wear it all the time.

As for other things I'm thankful for... umm, good weather here in Toronto, I suppose. It's a sunny Christmas this year, and there's snow on the ground too.

I'm 17 and have never been kissed. I used to be really anxious about it. All my friends seemed to have some sort of experience (one of my friends rotated through 5 different boyfriends in one school year). But I stopped worrying about it and letting it bother me. When it comes, it comes :)

Young Calorie Counters whats the strangest thing you find attractive in the other sex? Jul 22 2008

Modesty, probably. I hate guys who act all macho and arrogant and insist on paying for everything you buy even though you have the money to do it yourself. The ones who act the strongest are the weakest, in my opinion. They say that they want to protect you and watch over you, but it's just so they can seem manly enough to give their self-esteem and ego a boost.

Young Calorie Counters So. What do YOU want to do with your life? Jul 22 2008
04:03 (UTC)

I enjoy the arts, but being a painter doesn't really earn you a living, so I'm planning to go into a career that's nice and relaxing and, at the same time, can reel in enough money for a nice condo, nice car, and weekly shopping trips. SO, I'm going into pharmacy :) If that fails, I'll probably be a teacher or a nurse.

I'm planning to go to a university in the city where I live. I don't mind commuting and don't want to have my parents fork over extra money for residency fees just so I can have an "on campus experience". Oh, and I don't want their greasy cafeteria foods either.

Motivation Do you "feel" fat? Jul 22 2008
03:54 (UTC)

I guess it depends on how much you're obsessing about your weight. Before, I never cared about my waistline, never cared about how I look in the clothes I buy, never cared about what size I wear in stores. But once you start noticing, you just can't stop. I used to be perfectly happy with who I sure; sure, I was aware that I wasn't skinny, but you know, it didn't matter, right? 'cause it's the inside that counted, right? But then one little comment kind of threw me off-balance, and since then, I just kept obsessing and obsessing. Usually, my self-image goes along with what the scale says, though. If I'm experiencing a trend of decreasing body weight, I feel skinny and happy. When I have a day where there's a "natural weight fluctuation" or a wonky scale reading, I just feel like crap, suck in my stomach the whole day, keep on checking my reflection in every shiny surface I see. Yeah, I find that ever since I started dieting, I never stopped watching my figure. Even during periods when I don't restrict my eating, I feel utterly depressed at the increasing reading on the scale; it just makes me feel so vulnerable and out of control. But yeah, long story short: my self-image pretty much rides on my scale reading, and I'm happier dieting than not.

I know how you feel. I have this friend who eats constantly and spends all day in front of the TV / computer, and for some reason, fat just doesn't stick onto her body! She's 103lbs and 5'6" and eats like a pig. God, I just can't help but envy her.

How many calories are you having per day? Are you sure you're eating enough? Be careful when you're cutting calories, because not having enough in a day can really have devastating impacts on your metabolism, causing you to lose weight at a slower rate. Oh, and make sure that you eat breakfast.

Lose five more pounds and keep it that way for the whole year. XD Maintaining weight is really hard for me; I tend to either lose or gain. Another goal for me would be to exercise more frequently. I've been slacking off on running on the treadmill since the holiday season arrived.

I totally understand what you mean! Sometimes I get so hungry that as soon as I finish a meal I begin thinking about when the next one will be. It helps, though, if you treat yourself to snacks (healthy ones, that is) between meals. Have an apple or orange when you feel incredibly hungry. That way, you won't be starving by the next meal and won't feel the urge to stuff yourself full.

Oh gosh, now I'm scared.

I've been using a dial scale. Lately I started to increase my calorie intake. I've always thought that I've been maintaining my weight, but now who knows?? T_T

Maybe I do need to fork over the money for a digital scale *sigh*

Still wearin' them. Strange to think that even after losing nearly 20 pounds I still wear the same size. I mean, my pants are pretty lose around the waist now (they were tight before) but apparently I'm still not skinny enough to get down to a smaller size. Argh.

Yeah, I KNOW. Sometimes when I wake up in the morning and look in the morning I feel pretty good, but after school when I come home and look at myself again I don't feel so hot even when the scale reads the exact same number. I'm not sure as to why since I don't eat a lot during the day (I drink 1L of water, but most of it's already out of my system by the time I get home). It might be psychological *shrugs*

But anyway, on a lighter note, welcome to CC! I've just joined quite recently too.

I just kinda went along with the username I've always used for every single account I've ever made since I was, like, 12 or something. I know, it's been 4 years and I'm not the obsessed Anime nerd I used to be, but hey, I have a hard time letting go of such fond memories of childhood attached to my username, memories of a time without counting calories and fat and whatever, okay?

That and the fact that I'm just plain too lazy to think of a new username.
Motivation Lack of self-control at night. Sep 26 2007
04:10 (UTC)
I experience cravings at certain times of the day too, though usually in the afternoon when I've just gotten back from school. I still haven't completed succeeded in stifling the temptation yet, but let me tell you, it helps if your home has two floors.

My computer's on the second floor; it keeps me busy most of the time and I don't have to think about going downstairs to get food from the kitchen, and even when I'm bored and have nothing to do besides surfing the net, I'm too lazy to pick myself up to go fetch some food. So yeah, laziness can be a good thing at times.

If you don't have two floors, you can always read a good book or do something else that entertains and distracts you. If you can't do that, well, whatever you do, don't face the kitchen. XD

I'm a bit taller than 5'2" (though I desperate want to be a 5'3"). My weight was at its highest probably between February and May of this year, at around 125 pounds (after that dreadful class trip to Ottawa that involved a chocolate factory). My lowest and current weight is between 104 and 106 pounds. After losing almost 20 pounds in two months I'm increasing my calorie intake again while trying to stabilize my weight.

I don't know much about muscles, but I know that unless you start really obsessing about the whole weight-training thing, your body won't look significantly larger, especially since you're a girl. Sure, your flesh will become stiffer and more toned, but you won't develop large, bulging muscles. If you workout regularly, however, you probably will gain weight. But who cares about weight when you don't actually look any larger? You'll be losing fat and your body will look nicer, so who cares if the little number on the scale is going up?

3. I can be a loyal friend.

4. I care for the environment.

5. I think before I do.

I have this hypocrit of a friend who always complained about how she was so much fatter than me in front of our other friends, and, even though I knew it wasn't true, I'd always thought that I was able to conceal my actual weight well. But then somewhere along the way, she began making fun of me when we were alone, like poking my stomach or my arms and calling me "pudgy". The first time I took it as a joke, but when she did it the second time, and then the third, it really got to me. I know I tend to take things more personally than I need to and that these comments are nothing like some of the insults that were thrown at you guys, but she was a friend and I trusted her. That was how I started dieting and exercising. She stopped making fun of me and I still act like her friend now but I'm never, ever believing a thing she says ever again.

Good for you XD I have the same problem as you've once had. I've started dieting and exercising regularly about three months ago and haven't gotten my period since. Mine usually skipped months, but I'm worried 'cause it doesn't usually take this long...

I'm at a healthy weight and am trying to gradually increase my calorie intake without gaining weight, so I'll cross my fingers and hope that God'll be kind.
Weight Loss Scale difference Sep 26 2007

Yeah, I've encountered the same problem. I'm typically between 104-106 pounds at home, but when I weighed in at the doctor's a few weeks back I was 114!! I mean, sure, you weigh differently depending on the time of day, what you're wearing, how much water's in your system, etc, but 10 pounds is quite a difference.

I know it doesn't really matter how much you weigh on someone else's scale as long as you know how much weight you've lost according to your own, but geez, it's so depressing to know that you actually might be 10 pounds heavier than you think.

I've always been on the chubby side, and to tell you the truth, I have no clue why I didn't do anything about it even though I was constantly self-conscious about it. I guess it was because it never really was a probably for me back then (I was a bit of a nerd, and still is), that is, until one of my "friends" started poking my stomach and squeezing my arms while saying "ooo, pudgy" in her oh-so-sweet voice. Yeah, she really got to me. Then, that summer, I decided to stop eating meat, stop eating junk food, get some exercise, lose the fat, show her that I can become just as skinny as she is (if not skinnier) and see what she else she'll have to say about my weight.

The funny thing is, after I got back to school, I took another good look at her and realized that, hey, she wasn't as skinny as I thought.
