baccala is heaven!...it's funny you mention it, because my grandmother lives in Delaware and always gets salted cod from the Italian market in Philly to make baccala before we get there. glamgram, pannetone is a sweet bread that contains citron and lemon zest. It's really beautiful, and has large, cylindrical base and puffs up really high. hah, hard to explain, but I'm sure google has some good pictures. |

clairelaine: No way! We have the tradional fish dinner because it's what my great grandparents, who came over on the boat from Abruzzo, Italy (they're from Alba Adriatica -- I still have cousins and aunts and uncles there) always had. Our fish stew recipe goes way back. : ) How cool, I guess my family's tradition is not so unusual at all. |

I don't know if our dinners qualify as "unusual," but I do love them! : ) For Christmas eve we have a traditional Italian 7-fish dinner: We have smoked salmon as fish #1 for an appetizer, and for dinner we have fish stew over homemade fettuccine. It's delicious! It's a tomato-based stew, and this year included tuna, cod, tilapia, shrimp, clams, and crab legs. Top it with some parmesan, and oh, it was so good. : ) For dessert, I made meringue snowman. For breakfast, we make panettone....unusual for the US, I guess! And Imade a not so unusual feta, sun dried tomato, and spinach (crustless) quiche that came out well. Normally we have coddled eggs, which are wonderful, but I thought I'd mix it up. For Christmas dinner we have beef tenderloin, a simple green salad and homemade ravioli! It's just a simple ricotta-parmesan-herb filling, topped with a simple mushroom, olive pasta sauce. The fettuccine we had last night was just made from left over ravioli dough. We live in the south and are really fortunate to still have fresh rosemary and thyme from our garden, which makes a big difference in everything. Dessert's different every year. This year we kept it simple: pumpkin pudding, Fannie May chocolate, and Christmas cookies : ) |

I bet they might work with almond milk, especially if you beat your whites seperatly and fold them in (to make up for the lightness that buttermilk provides, maybe?). It could be a fun experiment : ) Or, you could use applesauce instead of pumpkin, mix up the spices, add almond extract...and have a whole new muffin! Maybe and even more delicious one! haha, I love baking.
I hope you all like them! |

Another thing you could do with the hard boiled eggs littlemalynda suggested would be to make an egg sandwich. Get some hearty, whole grain bread (or make your own!) or a bagel (the asiago cheese bagels from panera are so tasty!), slice up 2 or so eggs, add some soy cheese, tomato, whatever, toast the sucker and hit the road. Mm, I love egg sandwiches. : ) |

I love my early morning runs! I'm new to running early in the morning (just started at the beginning of the summer, because I live in SC and it is HOT!) and, really, running in general. I've always played sports, but I started running about 4x per week sometime after volleyball season ended (october?) and am now running 6x per week. It's amazing. I can't imagine starting my day off any differently....I love the energy it gives me for the rest of today. Today I ran 7.5 miles for the first time ever, and there's just nothing that beats the way you feel afterwords...not that I have to tell you any of that! : ) I probably run around 4 miles a day. I run cross country, so I just follow the summer work out scheduale for now. I don't really know how I wake up in the morning -- at first it was really difficult, and I was always tempted to not get up, but I always managed to talk myself back into it (somehow!). Now I just get up, eat my apple, get dressed and go. I just kind of do, and then I'm running. And then I'm home, and I feel so awake and just plain good! Does anyone else feel like their run goes by fast? Even if it's a rough day and it feels like forever while I'm doing it, when I'm done, I just always feel like...that's it? haha, I'm maybe I'm strange. I had the bathroom problem yesterday. Oh my god, worst feeling ever. I was running as fast as I could home, but it hurt so bad! I think it happens to everyone. I normally go to the bathroom about two to three times before I run (right when I wake up, when I eat, right before I leave, lol, all within about twenty to thirty minutes), and that really helps. I also feel that not eating too much and not drinking anything before I run helps. As for the mp3, yes, I, too, have given it up! Slows me down. I do still listen to it if I have to use a treadmill, though. I used to love treadmills, but now they bore me to tears. I'm normally okay if I have some music to zone to, though. : ) Yeah, as far as cars go, I think a lot of drivers are a, not awake, and b, jealous. ; ) haha, some people are nice and wave, though. Honestly, I'm amazed at the number of people awake and dressed and on their way to work so early. EDIT: By the way, does anyone use a heart rate monitor? If so, do you feel it's helped with your training/running? I'm trying to maintain my weight, so I'm not really interested in any of the weight loss features, but I am interested in target heart rate, stopwatch, etc. I'd also love something that can double as a watch and is cute! haha. I just started looking into it, so I was wondering if anyone here had any useful info. : ) |

I'm not a big fan of Stevia in coffee -- I find that it takes a lot to sweeten it, and the flavor always just seems off. It's odd. So, I stick to Splenda in my coffee. Stevia is amazing in everything else, though. : ) I really love it in tea, smoothies, etc. It just doesn't taste right to me in coffee. haha, me and my mom were talking about stevia this morning, she feels the same way. We've managed to buy boxes of packets (50 packets/box) of powdered stevia for around 4.99 - 5.99 (Publix and Bloom). I like the powdered stuff a lot more than the concentrate, which is far more expensive anyway. I really enjoy Stevia, and I do think it's worth it....for tea. Which I drink a lot of. : ) If you like it in coffee, I'd say it's worth it. However, I'd give it a try first. |

Well, it all started because.... Someone else mentioned guys thinking "ooh, she's hot!" and I totally agree, lol! For real, what great confidence booster! I also want to like the photos of myself. My mom loves taking pictures, and losing the weight that I have has made me feel really beautiful and more confident in front of her camera! Plus, I want to be able to look back on those pictures when I'm older and see a person that I'm happy with, and a person that I know was happy. I want to be less self concious in the locker room/by the pool...especially by the end of June, because I'm going to at the beach for one glorious, relaxing week! I like being able to sit down in class and not have to worry about the fat rolls on my stomach & I no longer feel the need to pull up my jeans to try to hide them....it is one of those little things that is so satisfying! Also, when I eat at resturaunts, I don't want people to look at what I'm eating/how much I'm eating and think "fat-girl" or "chubby girl"...haha I want them to be jealous that I can eat what I do and still look hot! My newest reason: to increase my speed and endurence! (my friend talked me into running cross country!) |

Breakfast: 1 cup of Kashi Golean with 1/2 cup of Activia, with half a medium banana, plus about 1/3 cup milk in my cup of coffee Snack: 1 harboiled egg and 1/2 glass of milk Lunch: Gala apple, and a turkey wrap: 1 flatout wrap (amazing, I highly suggest them! 90 cal and 8g fiber. : ) ) + 2oz turkey, 1 tbsp olive hummus, and 1/2 cup spinach Snack: Protein shake: today's was 1 tbsp crunchy peanut butter, 1 scoop Designer Whey Vanilla protein powder, 1/2 frozen medium banana Dinner: 1 1/2 slices of broccoli artichoke quiche, plus a salad with cherry tomatos and about 1/2 tbsp Trader Joes Pear Vinaigrette, and then an apple because I was still hungry, lol Dessert: 100 calorie ice cream bar and 1/2 glass milk. My mom was eating one, and they were just calling my name. All in all, a succesful day, within my calorie limit. : ) yay! |

I'm 5'0, 110, and eat around 1500 calories every day (with exercise). I only burn 1580 when I'm sedentary, so on off days I aim for 1400. Nothing rediculously low. : P |

Well, I do know that it is not necessary to buy all fruits and vegetables organically. The Environmental Working Group recently did a study on 44 commonly consumed fruits and veggies and their pesticide levels. The list can be found here: http://www.foodnews.org/
Basically, buy the "dirty dozen" organic. Otherwise, save and buy whichever produce is cheaper. ; ) |

QUESTION OF THE DAY: WED MAY 28: What proteins have you eaten today (or will you eat today?) Well, I just finished whipping up a delicious salmon salad! Mmm, 7oz pink salmon, 3 hardboiled eggs, 3 tbsp fat free mayo (which on any other occasion I would try to avoid) = 2 servings of deliciousness. : ) I also had about 8 oz milk this morning, 1/2 cup yogurt and some kashi golean at lunch in my fruit parfait, plus my daily post-workout protein smoothie, which is simply pure bliss. And, as of this afternoon, I am officially going to attempt running cross country! I'm really excited. I'll be terrible, but it'll be a really great to get in shape and push myself. : ) I'm proud that I signed up, here's to hoping I can stick with it! |

Question of the Day (Tuesday 5/27) ... Do you tend to eat the same basic breakfast every day, most of the time, or do you switch it around a lot? Are you happy with your breakfast? I really do eat the same basic breafast (s) every day. I always think about switching it up, but they just make me too happy! This morning I did my oatmeal + 2 tsp almond butter + 1/2 banana +cinnamin, and then I always have milk in my coffee or on the side. Sometimes, if I know we're having a light dinner, I'll throw some orange juice in my oatmeal. It's amazing, it has just the right amount of sugar and acidity! If I don't want something hot, then I have the exact same thing with 1/2 cup kashi golean crunch and 1/2 cup milk. : ) It's so good, and the almond butter keeps me full all morning! We have tons of frozen blueberries because we have like twenty bushes going down our driveway and we pick thousands of them during the summer (it is hell. SC is hot, and picking blueberries for hours daily becomes a chore really fast!) so if I feel like mixing it up I'll throw those and some raspberries in, but...I mostly stick to my average breakfast. The few times I've tried to switch it up, I haven't been nearly as satisfied! |

well, of unhealthy things...keep me away from ice cream (oh my god, edy's and breyers double churned are so so delicious and low cal, but I have NO self control, I'll go after like two or three servings! I can't keep myself from going back!), pancakes and muffins. They don't fill me up, and even if they do, I just can not resist. It's so sad. And, of course, pasta. I've grown up in an italian family, and even though our pasta dishes are pretty healthy...dear god, I can eat so much of it! It's so yummy! : P As for healthy stuff, I have the same problem with almonds. And grapes, because I go through them so fast that I don't realize how much I have consumed. And bread, especially delicious, home made, warm, fresh out of the oven whole grain and nut breads. They're like heaven. mmm. |

yeah, I've always had really small boobs, and they were the first place I lost weight. It's so sad. My top is so tiny, lol! I'm barely even a 34 A -- don't feel bad your b cups! I'm jealous! Plus, I'm really short (5'), and now that I'm thin, S tshirts are too big. Like, really big, dress big. But YLs are short and fat, and very unflattering. So, basically, I look retarded in tshirts, which are my favorite things ever. ) : Actually, it's just made finding sizes for me near impossible. oh well, it's worth it! The stuff that does fit well looks good. ; ) |

Today we went out on the boat with a bunch of friends, and I managed to resist temptation! I made some amazing raspberry sweet (splenda) tea, and that helped me resist all the unhealthy stuff laying around. : ) I managed to snack on some delicious cherries, enjoy my open faced turkey sandwich and look hot in my bikini, lol! Boat outings have always resulted in me doing some hardcore snacking, so this was an exciting mini-victory. Plus, now I have the calories to enjoy a burger on the grill tonight and be under my daily limit (god bless 96% lean ground beef!). : ) |

| Weight Loss | How many people just eat when they are hungry? Or do you have set meal times? | May 24 2008 17:31 (UTC) |
4 |
I do both. Because I'm in school on week days, I'm sort of forced to have "set meal times," and on the weekends I try to eat small meals spread across the day (normally about five small meals that fit into my daily allowence). I would say I have a loose meal plan -- once I am maintaining, though, I'm going to try to distance myself from calorie counting really learn to eat when I am hungry and to stop when I am full. : ) One of the reasons I have found calorie counting to be so effective for me is that I've always struggled with portion sizes (especially since I am 5'0 and just need less then my 5'9-6' friends!)and I feel that CC has helped me figure out what the right portion sizes are for me. |

Do you like fish? Do you eat fish? What sort of fish will you eat? And do you take a fish-oil supplement? (What the heck, do you own fish?) I used to detest fish. The smell alone made me sick! About a month ago, though, I made myself try a bite of my father's lemon sea bass or something...I don't know, but it was really good, and since then I've been trying everything! I'm actually allergic to shellfish, but last week I actually ordered blackened salmon at a returaunt and it was wonderful. Mmmm, and dynamite rolls with blackened tuna. So delicious! Last night my mom and I made some really good salmon salad, actually. It was just 7 oz packaged pink salmon, 3 harboiled eggs, and about three tbsp fat free mayo. It was delicious, we ate it open face with some fresh salad from our garden. No fishy supplements for me. I did have a beta fish that lived for four years, though. It was green, I was five, and it was named greeny. : ) |

I really love the designer whey products. I make a daily smoothie, lol, but really, it tastes amazing! I don't know if they have enough protein for you (18.0g) but they make a delicious snack. Right now I have strawberry and vanilla, both of which I normally mix in 1/2 frozen small banana (great creamy texture) 1/4-1/3 cup orange juice, 1/2-1/3 cup frozen mango or blueberries, three ice cubes, a half cup cold water....so delicious. Feels like a milkshake or really creamy smoothie. and when I had chocolate, it was chocolate banana with a tsp of peanut butter everyday! haha. |

Thanks for the snack ideas! The peppers sound especially delicious...and if I ever make those granola barsI mentioned I'll be sure to share the recipe. : ) So, I haven't had time to weigh myself in the mornings, and haven't seen my "real weight" (sometimes I'll hop on out of curiousity, but I never let the numbers phase me because that;s normally not long after I eat) in a week or two. and hey, I've lost 2.5 pounds! weird! normally that takes me about three or four or five weeks, lol.... : ) it was pretty exciting. What is your target breakdown of fats / proteins / carbs .... and WHY? I personally shoot for 20-30-50 fats-protein carbs because I feel that it keeps me the fullest and gives me the most overall energy, especially if it's a long run day. I'm never upset if it's leaning more to one side, though, and I figure that as long as my fat is coming from good stuff (almond butter is my new favorite thing! amazing on everything, especially kashi golean crunch or oatmeal...mmm, with some banana or fruit, it's soo good, I forget it's good for me! keeps me full till lunch!) It's okay if it's more like 25-25-50.... Overall, though, the more protein, the better. : ) Molly, that is amazing! You really are the fiber queen, congrats on the drop in cholesterol. |
