Pregnancy & Parenting Did anyone take a lamaze class? Oct 22 2008

I had forgotten about how well these classes prepared my husband!  A PP mentioned it, and I wanted to second the idea!  My husband basically started our bradley classes because I said I wanted to go natural, but with all we learned, he is now so supportive, and well educated on labor, interventions, etc that I think he will be the one reminding me of all of our techniques and desires.

Also, the long class (12 weekly sessions of about 2 hours)  really helped my husband and I communicate so much better.  not only about the baby, labor, etc, but everything!  We were asked to express ourselves, both positive things and negative things, about the other, and how to work through them.  It was almost like couples counseling in disguise!  I just can't say enough about the Bradley method...

It is also helping me now, since I am a week late today!  It is helping to re-read my book, remind myself about the importance of low intervention, and to remind me how natural and wonderful an experience this can and will be!  (my mantra lately has been, the baby is happy and healthy, there is no reason to rush things...)

Ok, now that I have written a novel, I'm off... :)

I took a Bradley class, which is a 12 session class very similar to what a PP said. We went over the stages of development of the baby, stages of labor, relaxation techniques, and how to work with your body for a natural childbirth.  Also we covered breastfeeding, recovery, newborn care, various intervention options, etc.  I loved my classes!  I really feel confident that I will be able to handle birth, whether it goes the way I envision or not.  I am overdue, lol, so hopefully soon I can report back as to whether it worked as well as I think!  :)

Pregnancy & Parenting Baby Shower fun ideas? Oct 03 2008

This is a completely un-related type game, but we had so much fun doing this at my shower, I have to suggest it!

We got three progressively more complicated baby outfits (shirt and pants, long legged and sleeved onesie with bib and socks, and finally, diaper, onesie, overalls, sweater, bonnet and socks and shoes!) for two baby-dolls.  Then we paired all our guests up and they took turns two teams at a time dressing the dolls, fastest duo goes on to the next round.  The only rule was that each person can only use one hand!  We had eight teams, and the three rounds worked out perfectly.  It sounds so simple, but we had the best time!  My mom dropped the baby after her team won the first round, she was so excited!  We had a co-ed shower and even the guys really got into this one!

As far as baby facts, and such, I would suggest BabyCenter.com.  They are my favorite baby site!

Pregnancy & Parenting How long did you try (or how long have you been trying)? Apr 17 2008

I guess I am lucky, or just seriously fertile!  I went off birth control for a month, had a regular cycle, then we started trying.  I never had my period, and was about 5-6 weeks pregnant when I took my HPT.  It was so surprising, because I just assumed that I would have a hard time.

Good luck to all who are TTC or are soon to be Mommies!

I might have everybody beat!

My boy dog actually chewed on an electric cord THAT WAS PLUGGED IN!!  Thank goodness it was after the "brick" where the AC gets turned into DC, so he didn't fry.  I think the little shock he got just pissed him off, cause he chewed like ten 1-inch pieces off of the end.

Both he and his sister love to eat anything plastic, or related to cooking.  They will eat plastic cooking utensils, tupperware, anything.  They have actually figured out how to pull hard enough on our baby proofed pantry (no baby yet, but problem dogs!) to pull open the door and eat entire loaves of bread.

As a pp noted, they also love ice!  They could be asleep upstairs, and hear the ice dispenser, and run downstairs like kids at Christmas!  Or if they hear ice in your drink cup, they will follow you around until they get ice.

First two quizzes said boy, by the same margin, 60-40.  Last test said girl.  I have a long time to wait to find out though, since we aren't going to find out the sex of the baby until delivery!

I take the Pre-Natal from Nature Made.  They don't make me sick, and aren't so big I can't swallow them.  You can also get them at a really reasonable price at Costco.

I would take a pregnancy test, just in case...

I was on the pill for at least 8 years straight, and got pregnant right away.  If my husband hadn't been using condoms for a month, I would NEVER have had a normal cycle.  I'm not trying to be ignorant, but I always play devils advocate and want to make sure all sides are covered.  If you have already ruled that out, I would imagine your doctor could do some sort of bloodwork to see if you have normal hormone levels or whatever...

Good Luck!

Fitness I jog with a dog every day, but I do not know what kind she is.... Anyone? Feb 23 2008

I like the answer, "she is a brown dog!"  I use the same theory to answer questions about my mutt, though she is black!  haha.  The pound said she was a collie mutt, but really, she just looks like a plain old DOG!

Other things I say are she is a "certified muttdog", Heinz 57 (we are from Pittsburgh, and that always goes over well!),  or "pound puppy."

No matter what you call her, she is adorable, and it is always great to have a cute running partner!

Fitness Marathon training Feb 11 2008

I am ALSO starting a training program for a half marathon (well, i am starting out slow this season with a 5k and a 10 k, then a half, but whatever...Tongue out)  I have been having a terrible time getting out to run because it is so cold!  My lungs just burn and my snot freezes!  ( i know, gross!) I know that asthma can be triggered by so many things, the cold could be a culprit.  I had a friend suggest that I wear a ski mask or scarf around my mouth, but I found it to be too restrictive.  But it works for some people, so I thought I would suggest it.

Keep up the fantastic work on your training program (five miles is great!  More than a third of the way to the finish!) and don't let this get you down! Cool

Well, I am not a mommy, but I do work with special needs adults. So I come across tantrums/behaviors a good bit. My favorite story, however, was from one of my Special Ed teachers in college.

She had a daughter that was sick, and had to take medicine. Daughter refused and refused and threw a tantrum, even in her ill state. Mom ended up losing her cool and chased her around the house with this spoon of pink medicine. Then finally, her training kicked in and rather than insisting on the girl taking the dose, she said; "Do you want to take your medicine in a cup or off this spoon?" Immediately the girl said, "Out of a cup."

Isn't it amazing that giving up just a little control to such a small person will get them to do exactly what you want? I just thought I would share that little gem. Hopefully I will remember it myself when I have kids. :)

I have the same thing happen to me, off and on. If you have cut out pop recently, your body may be adjusting to the lack of caffeine. Or your body may just need time to adjust to this way of living. I have lost about 65 pounds, and I had a doctor tell me that sometimes when your body or diet changes, your blood pressure may fluctuate for a while, until your system gets used to the new ways. Hopefully, it will pass for you soon! Good luck, and don't let this keep you from the path to wellness!
