I really have no idea if this would work, but what about substituting apple sauce like in baked goods? I know that a lot of stuffing recipes use apples so the taste shouldn't be that bad. It might need a little water too though since I'm assuming the butter is supposed to melt. |

So I decided to lessen the resistance on the elliptical during my workouts and go back to my old habits. I found that my legs would be so sore the day after that it was affecting my workouts for the next few days, and I could go for even less time. However, I do still use the elliptical (it's a precor) on an incline of 5, resistance of 9, and go for 45 minutes. I find that every 2 weeks or so I am able to increase the resistance by one more. So I know that I am still building muscle (I do leg-training with weights once a week) but am able to go for much longer durations of time, still maintaining a high heart rate. |

So I got back a little while ago and think I did pretty well. I only had 5 of the tortilla chips, overloaded with fresh salsa, since I knew they were deep fried but I was SO hungry. I ordered the margarita chicken, which looked like 6 oz of chicken or so (and was absolutely delicious!), and ate half. I also got the black beans (which tasted like they weren't even cooked, just poured straight from a can =/) and vegetarian chili (which was really good and I also ate half). I also ended up eating all of the peppers and onions from my boyfriend's fajitas. I think I did pretty well health-wise but not so much calorie-wise. It doesn't really matter though since I haven't counted in a few months and have been increasing my intake a lot, especially on days when I lift weights (like today!). Thanks everyone! |

Yes! I've only ran outside once but yes! And it was a nightmare! First it was the inside of my ears that were burning, then my eyes - which started tearing. Next thing I know my whole body was itchy and covered in hives. I still have pics from it on my phone. Arms, legs, back, chest, puffy eyes and swollen ears - EVERYTHING. I took 2 Benadryl and lied down for about an hour and then it went away but I was flipping out. I haven't run outside since, partially because I'm too scared, so I never went to the doctor to get it checked out. But I definitely want to know why exactly i happened. |

I actually just started experimenting with this 2 days ago so I have no results yet. I'm doing it more to try and increase strength in my legs as well as get my cardio in. I started using the elliptical at my school's gym on a high incline with a very high resistance. I can only go about 100 rpm but my heart rate stays between 160-170 bpm the whole time. I used to do half of the resistance at 150rpm with the same heart rate. The ONLY problem I've noticed so far is that the higher resistance wears you out much quicker so you can't work out as long unless you lower the resistance for a few minutes. I can usually only do it for 25-30 minutes as opposed to 45-60 minutes. In terms of weight loss, I'm not too sure which one burns more calories if you do it based on those different times. |

| Foods | Cheese - anyone have an alternative for quesadillas? | Sep 09 2009 03:11 (UTC) |

I totally feel like procrastinating (who WANTS to do organic chem homework?) and sort of agree with the above poster. I once made a veggie lasagna that called for mixing cottage cheese with a small amount mozzarella as opposed to using a ricotta filling and lots of mozzarella on top. It might work for a quesadilla if you mix some cottage cheese with cheddar jack but you might have to blend it with a little bit of milk to make the consistency less lumpy. If it's still lacking in flavor, you could try adding a spinkle of taco seasoning or regular seasoning salt. Hope I could help! |

Ok, so I've been doing well with eating with the exception of yesterday (I woke up at 12pm and had work from 6-10:30pm) where I ate 1300, and have only gained about 2 lbs. I'm wondering if I should slightly lower my intake. I suffered a pretty servere back injury last Monday along with a concussion (I slipped down 8 stairs on the boat that sails between Niagara Falls) and can't do any form of strength training (no free weights, pushups, or situps) and the only exercise I can do is walking and maybe biking (however it's been raining almost everyday). I still plan on eating AT LEAST 1500 but probably more. Should I lower my intake from 2000-2200? And if so to what? |

| The Lounge | wedding favor help! | Jul 02 2009 23:45 (UTC) |

Well I went to a wedding this past friday and thought the favors would fit both categories (edible and useful). During dessert time, there were 2 large tables set in the middle of the dance floor. One held little glass candy jars (about the size of my fist) with a label on the lid with the bride and groom's name and the date. The next table was filled with all types of candy to fill the jars. Mine was filled with truffles, chocolate covered pretzels and toffee. But there were many other types of candy as well that were not chocolate like those fruit slices, swedish fish, gummy worms, sour straws, and other things I can't remember. I thought it was cute since everyone could pick what they wanted (and eat some then and fill it again before leaving) and can also reuse the jar, whether it be for cookies, candy, or perhaps even a plant or candle. |

I personally have found that leaning forward, gently resting my hands on top of the handles and forarms against the side facing me, and using only my legs to move the footpads while pressing down with my heel works my lower butt (not sure what it's called). Sometimes it's sore the day after if I do it for long enough! I'll try to make/find a picture if your not sure what I'm talking about =P Edit: This is while going forward by the way. And I tried to make a picture. See that the heel is driving the leg down on the front foot and there isn't too much weight resting on my hands, if any at all (just used to keep balance). |

Ok thanks to both of you. For gi-jane: I've never actually been overweight. Before I ever even started to change my eating habits my highest weight was 113 and my periods were completely regular. But I was also eating probably 3000+ calories a day (used to eat a whole box of Kraft mac n cheese for lunch on weekends AND everyday after school was some sort of ice cream sundae =P) but played volleyball for my high school until my sophomore year. So I don't think the problem is necessarily my weight, but all the changes its been through. I'm definitely going to start eating WAAAAAY more. I already go through a jar of peanut butter a week so I'm pretty sure I'm getting enough fat in my diet. Tomorrow's breakfast: bagel with regular cream cheese and chocolate milk. I think I'll also start focusing mainly on weight lifting instead of cardio in hopes that anything I do gain turns into muscle. Now that I think about it, gaining 5 lbs won't be too terrible considering I've been up to 120 and felt the same as I do now. My clothes did feel tighter but I still had the same negative feeling about my body. And if I think that I'm gaining muscle, weight gain shouldn't make me feel too bad. Back in the winter, I FINALLY thought that I had cured myself of this problem. I was eating bagels for breakfast, grilled cheese or peanut butter sandwiches for lunch with a giant glass of chocolate milk, and whatever my parents made for dinner (ribs, chicken marsala, burgers, spaghetti with garlic bread and sausage) and never felt guilty once. Sure I weighed myself, but I attributed most of it to the Yaz. But once I went back down, I became afraid of going back up, especially with the summer coming. I really want to thank you guys for changing my mindset about my eating habits. I really don't want to live a life filled with medical problems when I'm older (Trust me, I know what problems some people have, I work in a pharmacy). Hypothyroidism already puts me at risk for osteoporosis, and my mug of coffee, multivitamin with iron, and lack of calcium aren't helping either. I promise both of you that I will definitely change, but I'm still not comfortable talking to my parents or my doctor. My pediatrician is an old Indian man (no offense to anyone) and I feel like he wouldn't understand me. My mom doesn't know much about food (She asks me, "Why do you buy low fat cheese? You need fat!" I tell her it's because of the saturated fat content. I get enough fat in my peanut butter and the oil I use cooking my egg whites [which will now become eggs]). That's why I have found this site so beneficial. I use a different one to log my calories (don't tell the mods!) but just LOVE reading the forums. I've learned so much but still can't make it work out for myself. I know about the whole "starvation mode" thing and yet I still put my body through hell. But not anymore. I'm kicking my ED out the door and out of my life for good! Or at least I hope so. |

Alright thanks. I currently have a job at CVS but only work 2-3 days a week since they're cutting back on hours. My boyfriend tries to help by telling me that I need to eat more and he seems really upset when I don't. That's why tomorrow he's taking me to japanese buffet where I can eat as much sushi as I want =]. Another problem with my eating so little is that I only wake up around 11-12:00 and go to bed around midnight (I've always slept this much and my hypothyroidism isn't helping =P). On days when I work (I work evening shifts, around 3-10), I feel bad eating at night since I find it uncomfortable to lay down shortly after regardless of what it is that I ate. For example, last night after work I came home and just had some toast with peanut butter and read until I felt comfortable enough to lay down. On some days I really do try and eat at least 1200 net calories (after exercise), but on days following I often feel guilty and go back to 800. I usually go out to eat at least once a week and enjoy myself, eating my whole meal and dessert. I don't know how I should just go about telling my mom. My dad seems like he could careless since he's overweight. Last night after work I said to him "I felt like I haven't eaten much today but I'm not hungry. Should I eat anything?" And he just said no. But I did anyway knowing that I needed to. I'll speak to my doctor about it. In the meanwhile, can you give me some advice as to how I can get in shape? I'm willing to eat more as long as I don't gain weight. I feel like I'm exercising sufficiently and obviously not overeating. If anyone can help me please do. |

Ok, but I just wanted to let you guys know I wasn't able to wear it last night (it got to cold). And the shirt actually goes a few inches down my thighs, so it completely covers any shorts I own. I don't have leggings, but I think it's possible skinny jeans might work (I-haven't tried them with the shirt yet). I know you guys said it would cause an unwanted V-shape from the shoulders, but the shirt actually kind of flares out at the bottom, which is why i wouldn't think that it would cause this. I don't know =P I'll try something when it gets nicer out. I'm trying to get in shape for summer (like the rest of the world) and hoping that maybe my boobs will shrink just a little bit so any shirt I wear fits me better (I'm currently inbetween a 34D and 34DD depending on the bra). |

Hmm...I don't have an answer to the first question but I'll tell you my free way of measuring heart rate. When the timer on whatever machine I'm using hits a number ending in 0, I start counting my pulse until it hits the 9. I then multiply by 6. I do this every few minutes to make sure it's staying about the same. I pretty much do cardio to the point I am heavily breathing to judge my workout but use the heart rate to make sure I'm still "in the zone." Hope this helps! Edit: By the way, I use this site, HR Calculator, to estimate the calories burned during my workout sessions. |

Hmm...I am sort of the same way. I'm 5' 3" and WAS 110 lbs but now 118 =(. My endocrinologist put me on Yaz because I didn't have a period for 1 1/2 years. Before the birth control she did some hormone tests. They all came back normal except for my TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone). The higher the number, the greater the symptoms of hypothyroidism (slow metabolism, fatigue, sensitivity to cold, etc.). It was a 6 and the range is from about .5-4. After a month on the Yaz, it jumped up to a 10! And during that month I gained about 8 lbs, and had not really changed the way I ate. She put me on Synthroid 100 mcg and my weight has pretty much stabilized at 118 lbs. You might want to get tested for hypothyroidism because it's pretty common, especially in women, and could be what's slowing you down. Hope I could help. |

haha okay so I see that most of you are saying that wearing a bra is definitely the way to go. By the way, I meant the original post in terms of health/physical aspects, not really whether they should or shouldn't be worn in public. For your info, I'm a 34C, almost a 34D (my left one is anyway =P). So I pretty much always wear an underwire bra when going out somewhere but wear a sports bra to sleep and around my house. Should I wear a "regular" bra to sleep as well? |

The crust has the most amount of calories, even if it is thin crust. You can even see this by looking at the Domino's nutrition facts on their website. It gives you the calorie count for 1/8 of a pizza for each type of crust depending on the size and how many calories in the cheese for each type as well. Crust (1 slice of a 12 inch pie): Cheese: I would assume that ratios are similar for other types of pizza as well. |

| Weight Loss | Q. About Metabolism can it be permanently damaged? | Apr 28 2008 03:21 (UTC) |

I suffered from a damaged metabolism as well. For about 1 year, I ate between 600-1000 calories per day. As a teen, I now realize how unsafe this was. I increased slowly and DID gain weight. However, once I got to 105 lbs, I think my weight stabilized as I can basically eat what ever I want and not gain anything! I realize that I am a lot younger and only had poor eating habits for a year but I still required time to recover. Good luck! |

I've had multiple tests done before (for my acne) and everything came back normal. And about the naps, I've always been able to sleep FOREVER Oh yeah, and before I forget, I didn't binge yesterday! All I had after dinner was some fruit salad and green tea. I think it might be from this post, kind of knowing I'm letting people down if I binge. I think the nap helped also. I had another one today but only for 2 hours. We'll see what happens... |

Thanks for your help guys. I mentioned, but it may not have been clar enough, that I have tried eating regular sized meals throughout the day but still end up binging at night. I was never technically diagnosed with an ED but my mom claims I was anorexic. However, I began eating normally in August and have had no eating problems since then (except an occasional binge on peanut butter, but nothing major). So far today has been good, as I took a 3 hour nap when I came home from school and am now forcing myself to do homework. I actually walked home from school today while it was drizzling (2.25 miles) and keep telling myself that it's not worth it to keep eating because that will be counterproductive. And yes I always make sure I eat balanced meals during the day. My breakfast today was a piece of toast with cream cheese and cinnamon sprinkled on top, a hard-boiled egg, and some fruit salad. Lunch was a turkey sandwich with turkey and lettuce (not really any fat but I don't like cheese or mayo). Dinner was chili with ground beef, beans, and other veggies, some rolls with butter (2), and fruit salad. All bread is whole wheat btw. Thanks again for your help. Btw, what I mean by the "just an apple" thing is that I try to pick a food that I will eat specifically for dessert instead of eating bits and pieces of whatever I crave (which turns into a large amount of food). |

| thanks for all your help! we actually ended up going to a different restaurant, on the same street but 28 blocks farther away (don't worry we took the subway because it was FREEEEEZiNG and 8:30 at night). I ended up getting shrimp and mixed vegetables with brown rice. It was in a brown sauce, the same as most places' beef and broccoli dish. I ate all of the vegetables (except the eggplant which knida soaked up all of the sauce), 3 pieces of shrimp, and about a cup of brown rice. Meanwhile my friends overindulged by finishing chicken fried rice, sesame chicken and other dishes. After that at Penn Station, they managed to eat more...Haagen Dazs. Now, I gave up chocoalte for Lent, and since I don't like vanilla too much, I had no problem passing on this. Thanks again! | |||
