| Vegetarian | Are we Veg*ns freaks | Sep 26 2008 13:43 (UTC) |

There's probably some psychological thing in there. Like, perhaps they're subconsciously appalled that someone who's among the few in the world who has access to nearly unlimited kinds of food would choose to severely limit what they will eat. And also to possibly endanger their bodies with lack of nutrition. Vegetarianism has been around for ages. The term 'vegan' wasn't coined until the 1940s. There are and have been civilizations with a large vegetarian population. Not so for vegan. It takes a while for things to be accepted. |

| Vegetarian | Vegans, would you eat truffles? | Sep 16 2008 16:13 (UTC) |
3 |
So like, if a farm decided to go "back to its roots" and start using oxen to plow again, you would refuse to eat the resultant crop? And truffles are a "gourmet" product. I know there are a billion definitions of gourmet, but I take it to mean something the average person doesn't eat that often, and something that is meant to be savored for its own distinct nuances of flavor. It's not like 300 million Americans are gobbling down pounds and pounds of this stuff each year and threatening the lives of hundreds of thousands of pigs and depleting the world's truffle resource It's a treat, and I'd say quite a benign one for the vegan gourmet. I mean, think about how foie gras is made. Or bird's nest, where if blood is found in the birdspit they consider it more "vital". So they train pigs and dogs to find a food, for which the animal is also awarded. Oh the inhumanity! On another note: Do you think it's unethical to use bloodhounds to find missing people? I could be really bleeding-heart mean and say "find missing children", but we'll say people. Is that an unfair exploitation of the dog's rights? I looked up the methods of training a truffle-dog (boredom and nagging curiousity for insignificant things drive me), and honestly, it's a glorified game of fetch. They begin by teaching the dog to fetch, actually. Then they add some smelly cheese. Then they hide the smelly cheese. Then they hide a truffle. Mental canine anguish, right there. |

| Weight Loss | Too Much Fruit? | Aug 29 2008 16:21 (UTC) |

I thiiiiink the fruit is pushing you towards the high end of your daily sugar recommendation, if not going over.
I had an "extra-large" peach today with my breakfast, and it says I've got 47% of my sugar intake for today. ONE PEACH. x_x And isn't that using the FDA standard, which goes off the 2k-cals-a-day, super-fit-tall-and-athletic-male standard?
I totally have the same problem with fruit though. Gotta have it, breakfast lunch and dinner. |

| Motivation | What size is a 5'7? | Aug 05 2008 13:46 (UTC) |

I am 5'8" 153 lbs, and...I -think- I'm a size 8? I just lost 7 lbs and haven't had a chance to try on new clothes since then, but at 160 lbs I was a borderline 8-10. At my highest, 195 lbs, I was a size 12-14, getting more towards 14. I'm surprised at a lot of the answers on here. Like, at 130 lbs I'd assume someone would be at the most size 6? |

My mother is a gorgeous lady. She gets compliments every time she goes out (and, she's so naive she thinks it's perfectly normal). I used to hate going to the coffee shop with her 'cause everyone knows her (she's known as "the lady with the pretty dresses" and "the Hong Kong movie star!"--which she's not, but is often compared to). And then they see me and are like "Oh....that's your daughter? Uh....well, you know, she's still got some time to uh....((don't say grow))"
I can be seen outdoors with her without being embarassed now. Though I can't say I'm used to the attention. |

| Weight Loss | The No S Diet, anyone tried it? | Jun 16 2008 16:47 (UTC) |
2 |
Yeah, I suppose, but I'm not a numbers person and the thought of spending the rest of my life counting my food makes me want to...I dunno, go to the fridge out of spite. In the longterm, I'm more likely to stick to this. And all the skinny people I know (except my sister, damn her) stick to it without even thinking.
I've been on this for about a week now and am 1 lb lighter, though some (or all) of that might've just been some water. More importantly though, I haven't binged.
Out of curiosity, I added up what I ate over the week (calorie-counting is a hard habit to kick) and translated it into calories. It was actually about what was recommended for me to lose weight. It's just a lot easier this way, and I don't have to waste my time thinking about food anymore. KISS, ya know? |

@tastytreats: Well yes, I've heard that too, I (and a lot of other people apparently) really found this was getting in the way of stuff like eating out, working, life in general. And I'd end up eating more calories. I think the site addresses this. In the lab environment, sure, the snacks thing is more "fuel-efficient", but in the real world? Well, it's not for me, anyway.
And I didn't think about S meaning anything else. :D Oops. |

| Vegetarian | Pescetarianism Questions. | Mar 03 2008 17:09 (UTC) |
7 |
| I'm pescetarian, though I am generally vegetarian on weekdays; it's weekends when I go to restaurants that I use it as standby (and sushi, dammit!). I've researched on which fishes are currently sustainable and try to stick with that. The best I've discovered so far seem to be crabs, shellfish, etc (except shrimp--the bycatch on shrimp is absolutely disgusting, about 50%, and they just let it die). The strictest laws regarding overfishing are generally applied to crabs and lobster, so you should be pretty safe with that. |

I have this problem all the time. Every week. My godfather is like the full-fat full-everything god in the kitchen, and the weekends are torture. Eat lightly (but not starving-ly) for the day leading up to dinner. If this is impossible, eat sparingly the next day, and try try try to get some exercise in between dinner and bed. |

| Weight Loss | cold vs room temperature water. | Oct 03 2007 14:13 (UTC) |

I heard cold water should be drunk alone, but if you're drinking with food, it should be room temp.
Something like cold water takes up more energy and slows down the digestive process for the food that goes with it. I don't know...never followed it so I can't say if it works. XD |

| Weight Loss | What size do you wear and how do you feel about it?? | Sep 29 2007 16:00 (UTC) |
46 |
I'm 5'7.5 and a size 8-10. =) I didn't let myself believe I could fit into a size 8 just 'cause I fit into Ann Taylor, since that store is notoriously big in sizes. A few weeks ago though, I fit into Betsey Johnson size 8.....which made me utterly ESTATIC. I'd kill to be a size 6, or even a solid 8. But it's better than when I was a size 12-14. XD
Another note, my sister is a size 0-2 and is a 32 C AND has a butt, both of which are very evident in a bikini. ): So depressing for big fat me. |

| Recipes | 1st time making soup... help? | Sep 28 2007 16:01 (UTC) |

I usually end up making italian wedding soup when I make chicken soup, though now that I'm pescetarian I don't eat it anymore. ): I boil a whole chicken for a bit until it's cooked in a pot of water (which makes my chicken stock! :D), then I take the chicken out, pick off the meat, toss it back in the pot, then dump a TON of spinach. I add some little ball-pasta too...forgot what it's called. Like orzo, but smaller and round. You can also add in some ground meat rolled into balls. Sprinkle some parmesan, salt and pepper, and you're good to go. :D |

| Motivation | I Came Here Looking for Cameraderie and Inspiration, But... | Sep 28 2007 15:04 (UTC) |

It's spelled "camaraderie".
Buuuuuttt don't give up! ;o; I'm relatively new to this site, and I have troubles reading these topics about 100 lb girls too, but the tools on this site are really helpful, and a lot of people have good things to say and sound advice. (: I guess it's just that there are all different levels of dieting, from someone trying to lose 3 stubborn lbs to a another trying to lose 100. The problems for the person losing 3 lbs are vastly different than the person losing 100. A 100 lb overweight person isn't concerned with "omg will my abs EVER show up?"; they just want to get into a healthy weight range, and won't bother with any "fine-tuning" until later. |

| Foods | Spicy Foods | Sep 28 2007 13:38 (UTC) |

I freaking love spicy food. I think a large part of it helping you lose weight is that it's a huuuuge punch of flavor in a few calories. :D Of course, if you're pairing it with bad ingredients like coconut milk then.... My favorite spicy food is almost any noodle soup. Well, it's not really spicy, but when I add the spicy sauce it's amazing. xD I believe it's also relatively low-cal as well. =) You just have to watch the sodium content. |

Oh my god. XD Your family owns a BAKERY?! I'd probably die. Well not really. Just be a huge tub of fat. (: Lol, I watched my mom take out a whole one to eat this morning:
Me: You know those have something like 1000 calories right...? O_O Mother: That's it? Wow I must be eating healthier!
She has no idea about the value of a calorie. Even when I told her that ~2000 a day is what she should have, she just went "oh...=shrug=". Blaaaah @ her size 2-4ness. |

A question for you guys: How long should I wait using a certain weight-loss routine (and nothing happening) before I switch something up? It's been 2 weeks now and nothing's happening for me. ): I'm fluctuating wildly between 159-161 lbs and it's so aggravating. XD I'd like to STAY in the 150 range for good!
I've been following CC's calorie guidelines for me...sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less, and working out almost every day. 2 weeks and no results...is it time to change something? |

I'd never heard of a white bean mooncake. Looked it up and wiki told me sometimes white kidney beans are used? XD I'm betting it's less calorific than the lotus seed paste ones. Even more so if there wasn't any egg yolk. I've been looking around for definite info but can't seem to find it. ): |

| Weight Loss | Help! Going to India - how can I stay on my diet? | Sep 27 2007 15:01 (UTC) |
6 |
Oh wow, I envy you. O: I honestly wouldn't be too worried about it. Just stick to portion control and worry about not getting sick, if you're unfamiliar with Indian foods. Drink all the (good) water you can get. I know I tend to not drink enough water when I travel. You should also watch the meals they serve in hotels, as they're probably modified to western tastes, but badly. When I was staying in Shanghai this past summer, I got desparate for anything that wasn't Korean or greasy Shanghai food, so we went to a very fancy hotel to eat. Salty greasy nightmare. They think westerners love it that way? Dunno. =/ Use this trip to experience true Indian culture instead. :D |

I use the gym in my condo building, which, since it's shared with a resort-type hotel, is /quite/ amazing. At first I was so scared of going in 'cause I expected to see all these long-legged Swedish girls breezing through the ellipticals on their holiday, but actually, every time I go, I haven't seen anyone. It'll probably change once it's in season again, but for now... State-of-the-art gym just for meeeeee ;D |

| Weight Loss | Thanksgiving Goal | Sep 26 2007 16:20 (UTC) |

Wow hbbroadbent, you seem all set. XD I'm not really concerned since I don't really care for Thanksgiving food at all. Buuuuttt, for holidays or other big meals, I just eat lightly (on good stuff) around the meal, 'cause sitting down to the meal super-hungry-ravenous is a baaaad idea. ): And you could stay more focused with catching up on certain family members you haven't seen in ages. The more you talk, the less food in your mouth. When I talk animatedly, I find myself eating at only half the pace of normal. |

nsgardener: I will mail you since continuing your thread of discussion would be throwing the topic off. XD But to put here, I was simply saying that I don't see the news saying something like, "Go easy on the pumpkin pie!" around Thanksgiving.
Gaaaah they're so amazing though. ): I'll just try to ignore the pile of them sitting in my fridge then. I really want to try the "healthy" ones. I heard they're made of frozen yogurt instead, or jelly. XD Must be pretty odd.... |

Wow....this just reminded me of the time when I heard on the radio about this woman who was trying the semen-only diet. Claimed semen was very nutritious and if she only lived off it she would have all she needed so could lose weight safely. e__e Don't recall if it worked. |

o__o Explain the TTOM thing? That sounds like a very serious problem indeed.
I know 'cause I used to only get my period 1-2x each year, and I didn't think much of it until a gyno told me I better take meds for it otherwise I could end up with cancer. x_x So I took meds ~1.5 years and just went off 3 months ago. Normal now if a bit wacky in which part of the month it chooses to grace me with it's glory. e_e
But also when I first started the medicine I dropped 10 lbs out of nowhere quite fast. Not sure what this is attributed to though, since said medicine was simply birth control and usually you gain weight with it...
Other than that, I'd say it's all in your head. Sometimes I look in the mirror and am disgusted by what I see, convinced that I gained approx the size of a baby elephant, but scales says otherwise. The next day I'm marginally more calm. XD |

| Motivation | large chested ladies | Sep 25 2007 17:37 (UTC) |

o__o Wow. I thought I had troubles at 36C. X_X Then again, I'm in an asian family. My own mother still can't believe it. It's so frustrating though to try on a shirt that looks adorable on that brickwall-chested girl but looks like a maternity shirt on me. 36C's supposedly the average bra size, but fashion makes it look so fat. ):
To Doorfry and anyone else who never got measured: GET MEASURED. Especially if you're on a diet, since your bra size WILL probably change (I went down in size). And especially if you have have a large chest, since you will need optimum support. I was buying and wearing bras the totally wrong way until this helpful store lady corrected me. (: Really, once you have the right bra, it feels so much better. Also, I read somewhere that every woman has uneven boobs, just like how one arm/foot will be bigger than the other. My guess is you have to HAVE more boob-ness to be able to tell a significant difference. I can tell a difference between mine, definitely. To correct that, you can get inserts (like the little jelly things! =squishyness=) to slide into one cup or the other, but the bra should fit the larger boob, not the smaller. :D |
