| Fitness | OW! My hands!!! is this normal? | Nov 21 2009 22:25 (UTC) |

Yes, your grip strength will increase. There might be exercises for which grip strength will be your limiting factor (Romanian deadlift, for me, is limited by my grip), but over all, your hands will get stronger and they won't hurt as much. I wouldn't bother with gloves - as you say, they'll only make it harder to grip for you, and I think the main point of gloves is to limit callouses - not worth it IMO. There are lifting straps, but I don't know anyone who uses them - I'd rather not be tied to a barbell, personally. |

This forum is for people who are working to gain weight. However, at 16, you are bound to be growing, and it is completely natural to gain weight. Do not restrict your calories because you need to nourish your body. |

Beginner is a relative term. For instance, my husband lifted from middle school on (so a good 15 years or so?) and would consider himself a "novice" at lifting. Partly because like most teenage guys (and up til his 20s) he was doing stupid lifts like a million different curls and shoulder shrugs etc. Then he started doing some reading, including Starting Strength - currently we are both following that program (which is done with 5 lifts - squats, bench, deadlift, shoulder press, power cleans, all with a barbell, divided between 2 workouts - squats are done in both). Isolation movements are appropriate for, as sully put it, experienced, high level bodybuilders (especially the chemically enhanced), but for the rest of us, starting with the full body and compound movements is more beneficial. You had said you were doing squats, but also leg press. Why the leg press? And you are doing military press, shoulder press, and dumbbell shoulder press... that's kinda redundant, no? That's why people responded the way that they did - it sounds like you are throwing in every exercise you know of, not doing a thought out routine. |

Have you taken a look at Welcome to the Fitness Forum FAQ - Read This First! I wouldn't recommend relying on magazines like Shape or Health... they tend to repeat ad nauseum the completely ridiculous notions that women can only lift 5lb dumbbells, and that cardio is the only way to lose body fat. Melkor just wrote a good post you might want to check out - especially the last 4 paragraphs. |

Keeping a drink in hand works - nobody will be paying enough attention to know that you never topped off the soda with a shot. And in cases where you go out, and are actually ordering from a waitress, say something like "I'm going to start with just a water" or whatever you want to drink, and if questioned, say that you're still deciding what you want to drink - again, most people will forget that you didn't end up getting alcohol. |

Yeah, the online calculators are wildly inaccurate. At some point I put my stats in several at the same time, and go everythign from underweight to obese. And I can assure you, I'm neither. At 5'8, 141 lbs, you are at a perfect weight. If you want, some gyms will do bf%'s, but keep in mind, people have said on here that trainers will report back an elevated bf% to sell training sessions. (also, it helps if you don't type in all caps) |

I wouldn't be too worried about lifting as a teen - if you are using proper form, it shouldn't be a problem, even as a teen. I don't have the link off hand, but I've looked it up on ACSM and they say that teens are fine with heavy lifting. Don't be afraid of getting "bulky" from going heavier (relative to your strength, of course) - as a female, plus if you are eating around maintenance or below, you'd have to work very hard and eat perfectly to actually reach "bulkiness". A good article is Strength without size. Also, remember that as you get older, your body will do some of its own redistributing - even up through college.

Here's the thing - we can all give you support and say 'yeah, I hate when people do that".... but you are 5'3" and 124 lbs (from another post) and only 16... so you are at a healthy weight for you height, yet you say that you haven't lost enough. Sometimes people say that out of jealousy, but since we don't actually know what you look like, isn't it possible that they are actually seeing that you've reached a healthy weight, and they are worried that you are taking it too far (as so many teens do)? |

tciherr - keep in mind that people have different body types and carry their weight differently. When I was ~135 4 years ago, I wore size 8 jeans. I attribute that to having started lifting weights, so while my weight went back to the same level, my body got smaller (or vanity sizing is out of control). That you can be an inch shorter and heavier than I, but still fit the same size that I am, says that you carry your weight well. |

Way better than Fuddruckers. I've only seen it in the mid-atlantic region, I think. Everything is cooked in peanut oil. Dunno why, but that seems to be a big deal to them. Fries are given to you in a paper bag, and the grease soaks through so that you can see through it. It's wonderful. |

Yep, if eat = burn, you maintain. Always good to remember that a day of maintenance just puts your goal off by one little day. And can sometimes do a world of good. |

It's hard to imagine beans, rice, and veggies in any way constituting a "cheat" - unless they had a pound of butter, a pound of cheese, and a pound of salt in them. Makes me a little worried about what you consider healthy, if you consider beans, rice, and veggies out of bounds. |
