Nope,
I won't be changing my habits AT ALL......  the thing you have to think about when you read these articles is where did the info come from.  A lot of articles touting this kind of information often get their "studies" from companies who make weight loss medications.  Not exactly an 'independant' study if you know what I mean!

You quoted the article as saying "Excersise has many health and emotional benefits, but it doesn't make a huge difference in when it comes to weight loss"
Sounds like garbage to me...I lost 4 pounds over 8 months with no exercise, but I lost my last 20 pounds with exercise in only 2 1/2 months, just a little bit faster!  Working out creates that calorie deficit that makes you loose weight, or mantain weight while eating more calories.  Also, when you up your metabolism by working out, it doesn't just bottom back out as soon as you stop exercising, it tapers down over time, and you burn more calories durring that time than you would if you hadn't exercised.

Don't let one article freak you out!
At the very least, if it really bothers you, hit the library or the internet and look us some independant studies on exercise and metabolism....you will be surprised how many are out there.  Just be sure you look at who is publishing those studies!

Good luck, and keep it up.

I've heard the Jillian Michaels 30 minute burn is amazing. I'm going to see if I can find it tomorrow, and if so, buy it!

Yup-  I have 6 Jilliam Michaels videos....Bes 1/2 hour workout ever, and she is highly motivational.   My favorite so far it "The biggest winner-Frontside".  I have not done the cardio kickboxing yet though, so that may change.

As for motivation-there is no easy answer.  But once you get into a routine, stick with it.  Vary your activities/videos so you don't get bored, and don't reach a physical plateau.

Best of Luck!

I LOVE running, and weight lifting, and I can answer some of those questions with some level of confidence.

Running will slim you gown...it does not bulk up muscle, but will instead create the long, lean look- make sure to stretch afterwards though-rumour has it that running can lessen flexibility.

As far a times per day- do what you enjoy.  There is nothing worse that boredom when working out.  If you like three short sessions then do it that way- you've seen the commercials- move your body 10 minutes 3x a day.

If you want ab definition you will need to do other ab excercises, if you want a six pack, plan on every day, the abs require alot of abuse to really shape up.

And, on top of it all, CONRATS for making the commitment and finding something you enjoy.

I do this on my breaks at work all the time....

take the time you spent going up and down and divide it in half.  Calorie count has calories burned for going up stairs at a vigorous pace, and for going down stairs.  I log my time half going up, and half going down.

It is a fantastic use of your resources at home, and you won't belive how fast you get winded compaired to a stair machine!

Doesn't anyone intentionally take days off???

I have been on this lifestyle for a little over a year, I have lost 60 pounds, and I ALWAYS take friday and saturday off.

1500 calories sun-thurs
2000 calories fri
NO HOLDS BARRED on saturday

Yes, I typically pack on some water weight, and it takes until monday or tuesday to dissapear, but hey-60 pounds doesn't lie!

Consider giving yourself a day off intentionally-it will keep your metabolism from getting used to lower levels of food, and when that cookie is talking to you on tuesday, you can just tell it it has to wait until friday. (with any luck you will have forgotten about it by then anyhow.)

Foods Sodium Intake May 20 2008

Original Post by caloriecountingme:

your recommended sodium intake depends a lot a lot on how active you are.  if you sweat a lot, then you need more sodium than the average bear.  there's nothing really wrong w/sodium unless you have high blood pressure or similar medical condition.  it's an electrolyte and helps keep you from feeling lightheaded.  if you eat so much sodium that it's dehydrating you, then it will make you retain water.

Caloriecounting me is correct.  I work at the minneapolis heart institute, and here we try to get every one to be on a 2gm (2000mg) sodium diet.  That is considered a restricted sodium diet.  The norm is under 3500, and the average restaurant food consuming american consumes about 4500 in a day.

Your best number depends on all the things caloriecountingme mentioned...exercise, water consumption, and other health issues.  The average person with no other health problems does not need to limit their sodium (be reasonable here), as long as they dring plenty of fluids.

One thing to keep in mind.  If you are a good girl for a few days and then eat "normal" levels of sodium (say by eating out....mmmm...nachos) one day, your weight will shoot up the next morning.  But fear not, it is just water retention. (Trust me on this, I take fridays and saturdays off of counting, and my weight is always a little high on sunday morning, but back to the expected place by tuesday...and I have lost 60 pounds this way)

Weight Loss logging showers?? May 19 2008

I agree with amethystgirl on this one.  Better to underestimate your activity than to overestimate and get frustrated!

Keep in mind, when you filled out your diet profile you told the computer how much activity you average in a day.  That little algorithm takes ADLs (activity if daily life) into account based on what you say your normal lifestyle is.  Notice that even when you do nothing, the activity log still counts calories burned throught the day.  Only log these things if you go above and beyond normal, Say you shower 3 times in one day, then log two showers, but assume one is already accounted for.
That being said, logging activity for showers and hygene feels like cheating to me.
