Vegetarian vegetarian/vegan service question Nov 12 2009
06:29 (UTC)

peaches0405: "From what I've seen, most vegans on this site are a quiet bunch.  They pretty much keep to the Veggie forum, are mostly respectful of others, and are not interested in being baited.  Just as they (most of them) are not interested in going into the other forums and posting things to purposely bait the meat eaters."

"...I wager to guess that since they are ok with human babies getting milk from their human mothers, then they are probably ok with any humans swapping any bodily fluids with any other humans."

True and True :) for me at least! However, I have to say that my hubby is a full on meat eater who almost never eats vegetables or fruit. Because of his diet, I would refuse to swallow if he ever asked me to.  I'm not comfortable knowing what is in that stuff... plus his diet makes it very... well... how can I put this... potent. I, on the other hand, am much more... fresh... and I know it's because of my vegan diet.

steffsheff: "Cows only produce milk when they have babies, just like humans. Therefore cows are constantly being impregnated so that they constantly produce milk. Not only are their calves taken away from them hours after giving birth, but they are then milked while pregnant again which causes all sorts of problems/infections such as mastitis which leaves all you milk drinkers with lots of tasty pus in your drinks. When the cows are then all dried up, they're killed."

"The other issue is for the merino wool sheep that have loose skin at the backs of their legs which can get dirty and infected if not cleaned. To make life easier for the sheep farmers, their skin on the backs of their legs are therefore chopped off in a process called museling (which then is very painful and can get infected itself). Don't even get me started on the animal transport issues that arise when they are sent to slaughter in the end!"

These are the reasons I don't wear wool and I don't drink milk. I have no problem wearing wool if the sheep are properly taken care of... but sense you never know where your wool is coming from, I just stay clear of it. Plus, I prefer cotton.

I don't drink milk not only for the reasons above, but because I don't think we are suppose to drink milk from other animals. That milk is only there because a baby was born. That's like drinking a woman's breast milk... yuck!  I also do not eat eggs for moral reasons (living conditions and whatnot), and also because I feel like it's still a baby chicken. That would be like consuming a woman's period, no? Discarded eggs... gross. And I TRY not to eat honey. I'm not contradictory... as someone stated before... but being vegan in incredibly hard. I HAVE in fact driven myself a little crazy from it... you can't be 100% vegan friendly in everything you do... not in todays world. But I try, anyone who's vegan for moral reasons wants to be the best vegan possible.

My main reasoning in responding was that if you are a vegetarian, or you have severe food allergies (which I do) then you have to educate yourself about what food ingredients should be avoided.  I just assumed that most people who claim to be vegetarians would know that Omega 3's=Fish Oil.  My initial response was not directed at clolitaa in the first place, and it certainly wasn't intended to be rude or disrespectful.  It was just my opinion.

I agree with the others about Omega 3's, I first think of flax (especially if it is a genuine "healthy" food... like what you would find at whole foods or something), and when I read the label and see "fish oil" I am disappointed and move on to the next product. Flax seeds are 6 times more rich in Omega 3's than fish oil... and I think flax seed oil would taste better in my orange juice than fish oil... I wonder how much sugar has to go in to mask the taste o.O

You can freeze bananas and use them for all sorts of things, including 'ice cream' by blending them in the blender; they come out the consistency of soft serve; add a little cocoa powder and it's just like chocolate ice cream.

And uh, this is going to sound weird, but have you ever heard of dumpster diving? My good friend is a Freegan vegan (meaning she doesn't spend a CENT on groceries) and lives entirely off of 'reclaimed food'.

I have gone with her, and number 1, it's amazing how much food grocery stores throw away that is still in great condition. number 2, most of this food is thrown out BEFORE the sell by date (NOT the use by date!!!), is in it's original packaging, and is separated from everything else in the dumpster with plastic bags. I'm squeamish, and I found the food well protected enough that I had no problem eating it. I also have a US Sanitation Certificate for food, so I know what dangers exist with this, and I still think it's relatively safe, as long as you use your own judgement.

Trader Joes is the worst around here; when we dumpster dove, we found a big plastic bag full of tons and tons of untouched Ezekial Bread, and they had all been thrown out on their sell by date, which means that had I come to Trader Joes just a couple of hours earlier that day, I could have bought that same bread in the store.

Look up Dumpster Diving online; I know it's weird, but it saves money and helps our world to live off of the excesses we produce.

I would check it out.... but my husband would disown me if I did that :\

Soup.  You can toss almost anything into soup, it's nutritious, cal friendly, and most freeze well so if you make a huge pot you can freeze 1/2 of it and eat it latter so you don't get tired of the same soup for lunch every day.

If you need to get rid of your lettuce make black bean nachos or salad wraps and toss the over ripe bananas into some whole wheat muffins.

I have a crock pot I never use... that could be used for soup right? And can I just throw anything in there? Beans, corn, potatoes... things I find in store bought soups?

Thanks so much for your ideas! I completely forgot about making my own nachoes! I used to do that all the time. And I haven't made any kind of muffin before... I suppose I could make any kind of "bread" product with the overly ripe banana's, right?

Hi Darth and Clay :)  I've been vegan for about two years, and I don't eat honey either.  I want to build more muscle but maintain the same weight.

Darth - what are your fitness goals?

I live in good ol' Portland, OR.

It is probably the most vegan friendly city in the country, it also has more vegan junk food than one could possibly imagine.

So every winter I gain weight eating yummy comfort food, and every summer I burn off as much as possible!

I am planning on breaking the cycle this year!

Most years I end up in much better shape then I started, but I never reach my ultimate fitness goal. I plan to make this year different.

I also want to get back in shape for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I did it for 3 years and started getting really good until life and school got in the way.

I just moved away from Portland... I miss the vegan doughnuts from whole foods :( and saint cupcakes! They  have the best vegan cupcake ever! When I visit in December... I'm SOOO gonna get me some more vegan sweets!

As in no animal products whatsoever (including honey)

I have been vegan for 13 years! Drop in and say hi if you're vegan too! We can support each other with our fitness goals!

I am 99% Vegan! Meaning I avoid honey, but I have to consume it sometimes because I'm hypoglycemic and am not always prepared. I'm also poor... which makes it even harder to be as strict as I would like to be sometimes.  I have also given into a craving for Avocado Egg Rolls at the Cheesecake factory twice in my two years of being vegan. Other than that... yea... I'm vegan.

Hi;

I am Vegan also.  Try eating a Bowl of Bran Flakes with Orange juice.  That sends me to the bathroom immediately.  Almost forgot to mention, the juice goes into the bran flakes instead of soy milk.   Lots of people say YUK! I say don't knock it till you've tried it, it's delicious.

I have been thinking about adding a bran-based cereal to me normal eats. But with juice? Can't I just have it with some soy milk with juice on the side? I'm willing to try it... once... :)

Thank you conscience, for stopping the constant frozen yogurt chatter within my head.

FROZEN YOGURT!!!
oh man i had such a hard time giving that up when i was going vegan!
i still have those days where i wish i could eat it, but i guess soy-icecream will have to do haha

I miss frozen yogurt :( the only place I could get some vegan soft serve was in Portland, Oregon at a place called "Blossoming Lotus"... it was the bomb.

And here I thought I was the only person in the whole world who couldn't stop eating Lara and Luna bars. I used to have a Luna bar every day for breakfast.  Luna bars are so much worse than lara bars because they are so processed and full of sugar. Lara bars aren't evil! They are good, raw, vegan food. Just you know... super fattening... and also full of sugar... but it's not added sugar!

For me... well... in Chicago there is a place called "Chicago Diner". It's all vegan friendly diner foods! You can see why this would be bad. Even though I'm so thankful for this little vegan paradise; it still allows me to gorge on big portions of food that probably aren't that great for me. Not to mention their vegan cakes, cheesecakes, and and milk shakes! Thank goodness this place is so far away from my place... and also so expensive. Not having a job sure makes it easier to not eat all those bad foods.

Also things I wish weren't vegan: Chocolate, cookies, diet soda, brownies... anything sugary and fattening.

I hope someone else here will give you the LONG answer to your question. As I'm low on patience and just can't bring myself to explain all the different reasons why people are vegetarian and vegan... and why accidently eating meat hurts them so much. So I will say this:  You know how it is against the Hindu religion to eat meat? Well it is for both ethical AND health reasons. So if they accidently eat meat, they have "sinned" in a way. Same thing with vegetarians and vegans. I am vegan for only ethical  and moral reasons; you can kind of consider it a part of my religion... as eating animals and animal products is against what I consider ethical and moral. Does that make sense? Like a Christian who kills someone. God tells you not to kill, but you do, and you forever live with the guilt. Like that :)

I'm very tired... so I'm sorry if none of what I wrote makes sense.

Vegetarian Why the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle? Apr 06 2009
23:36 (UTC)
11

I became vegetarian because:

1) I feel animals are much smarter than humans give them credit for, and I'm not comfortable eating something that is sentient and could possibly have a soul.

2) I LOVE animals... and just couldn't bring myself to eat them any more.

3) The animals used for slaughter are treated so HORRIBLY and inhumanly. Even if I was okay with eating meat... I still wouldn't simply for that reasona alone.

I have been vegan for almost a year... and the reasons I switched are because:

1) Animals used for dairy and egg products are kept in horrible conditions that I can't condone.

2) Cows are forced to give birth in order to produce milk. So I assume the milk is only meant for the calf, not humans.

3) I'm not sure if I think eating chicken eggs is okay. They ARE still chickens.

4) My body has a hard time digesting dairy.

By not consuming anything with animal products; I am not contributing to the abuse of animals.  I also do not wear anything that comes from an animal, including wool.

My favorite vegan lip balm is Alba Lipcare SPF 18. It uses Candelilla (a shrub) wax instead of bee's wax. I love how it feels and it lasts for a long time. I love any ALBA products though :) so I'm a little bias.

I wanted to say that this MAY be a once in a lifetime opportunity because top model is asking for women UNDER 5'7". Who knows if they will do it again? Right now I'm at 1000-1200 calories and I'm working out a lot.  And it's not something I plan on doing for an extended period of time. Just until I lose 10 pounds, and then I will eat and exercise normally and sensibly :)

Oh and I can't do Atkins or South Beach cuz I'm vegan Laughing

woohoo! you got the fight going here!

first, if god didn't want us to eat all those innocent cows, why did he fill them with meat?

But more importantly to you, perhaps you are craving meat because you are lacking a nutrient it provides?  not enough protein?  or something more specific...red meat is high in iron?  perhaps fill the void and the meat cravings go away?

So... we should be eating eachother as well? We're all filled with "meat". Even vegetarian animals are made of "meat", but they don't need it to live... which is what your saying. Yea...

Thank you everyone for the help... and even for those who say it's impossible and I shouldn't do it.  This isn't about fast weight lose because I don't want to make a life style change... I'm doing it JUST for the audition. After the audition I would eat more calories but continue to work out everyday. So please know that I'm not looking for fast results because I am unwilling to work for a "real" goal. What do wrestlers do to make weight? It's just what needs to be done for me to have a chance at something I love.

Vegetarian What do I eat if I'm trying to "go raw" (or semi-raw?) Mar 04 2009
00:28 (UTC)

I would LOVE to go raw... but my taste buds do not enjoy most raw vegetables. I had this raw "pizza" once... and it was so gross to me. I'm used to eating all natural vegan food... but some things I just can't stand :( which really sucks. Wiki has an article you could read about it :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raw_diet

Vegweb has a section of raw recipes! http://vegweb.com/index.php?board=154.0

As for my weekly diet... well... it varies really. It depends on how much money and time I have. But typically I eat:

Brown rice with mixed vegetables (frozen, pre-packed) with General Tso sauce from Trader Joe's

Peanut Butter or Almond butter and Banana sandwiches on Ezekiel Bread

A pasts dish that is just like "Evelyn's Favorite Pasta" from the Cheesecake Factory: Penne, Olive oil, Garlic, Pine Nuts, Peppers, Broccoli, Artichoke Hearts, Kalamata Olives, and Sun dried Tomatoes in Olive Oil.

Any kind of veggie or soy Hot Dogs on Ezekiel Buns

Spaghetti and Soy Meat Balls with Marinara Sauce

Orange "Chicken" with vegetables (a recipe from vegweb.com)

Trail Mix

Chocolate

Soy Chocolate Milk

Frozen fruit Smoothies

Red Pepper Hummus and Vegetable Flavored Brown Rice Snaps

Baked Potato with Earth Balance Soy Butter

I can't think of anything else at the moment :)

Vegetarian Suprise...It's NOT vegetarian! Mar 03 2009

Actually, most people are vegetarian because they don't believe that animals should be killed for us to either EAT or USE in any products we buy. Gelatin is made by killing animals... therefore, it is not consistent with what most vegetarians consider vegetarianism to be. Just because you don't want to eat meat, but are okay with eating other sloughter-by products, doesn't mean your the type of vegetarian that these people are trying to be.

I'm not big on soy milks because they are a little hard for me to digest. However, I do LOVE organic valley chocolate soymilk. It's the best chocolate soy milk I have ever had. For cereal, I drink rice milk. I was never a big "milk" drinker... so those are the only two things your likely to find in my fridge.

Vegetarian So. How would you feel if you found gelatin in your medicine/supplements? Feb 26 2009
13:50 (UTC)
Original Post by kajikit:

It's not food, it's medicine. Take it and pretend you never read the label. The amount of gelatin in one vitamin tablet would be miniscule, and you said it IS helping your hormonal problem. That makes it medicine.

It's the principle of it. I once bought some pills that  I needed but found out they had gelatin... so I threw them away and got a different brand. You are supporting the killing of animals by buying anything with animal products in it. That's why it matters... I don't know if that is why she is vegetarian, but if it's because she doesn't believe in hurting animals, then she should not be eating ANYTHING with gelatin in it.

Kaybug, it sounds like you really need these pills so I would suggest continuing to take the rest in the bottle, but do not purchase them again. If you could live without them... then throw them away or return them if it's possible.
