The Lounge Restaurant Service - WHY is it NOT Good sometimes Nov 02 2008

Perhaps the fact that you expect to be treated this way (it comes across in your rant, even if you don't notice it) is why it is happening.  Unless you've waited tables yourself, you can't begin to imagine why these things are happening.  With the exception of your comment that an apology is in order(which is true), the rest of your post makes it clear that you think the world revolves around you.  If the service is that bad, tip accordingly - that's one way to make sure that your server realizes they could have done better.

Weight Loss Anybody ever gone the No Sugar route? Oct 18 2008

I am an absolute sugar addict and the only way I can keep myself in some semblance of sanity is to avoid sugar entirely.  That includes honey and artificial sweeteners as well.  The one thing I do allow myself is stevia in my coffee or tea (and occasionally on my oatmeal.)  If I let my guard down, it doesn't take long for me to fall into the trap again - one small taste today leads to an uncontrollable binge a couple of weeks down the road.  And one binge leads to another, and another and another.

Having said all that, I've been off sugar now for 2 1/2 months (I did it for 7 months in 2007) and I feel great.  I've lost 12 pounds just by swearing off the sugar.  When I'm looking for a sweet treat I'll have some frozen berries in a couple of tablespoons of light cream.  (As Carleyrapp mentioned, eating them with a bit of fat helps avoid the insulin spike).  Was it hard?  Pretty much so for the first week, by the second week not as bad, and by the end of the third week I really wasn't missing it at all.

Now if I can only tackle the emotional eating....

I usually tell people that I'm allergic - if I eat that, I'll break out in fat all over!

Why don't you just plug it in as a new recipe and find out?

Is eating really going to make you feel any better?

Most likely, it will just make you feel worse.  I have a big sign on my refrigerator that says:  "STOP!  The answer is NOT in here!"  I also have signs on my stationary bike, my meditation chair and my gym bag that say, "The answer is here."  Just a reminder that emotional eating doesn't really serve the purpose we want it to.

Okay, I really blew it.  All the wrong foods for all the wrong reasons.  Sure I still stayed within my calorie range, but this was too bad to ignore.  Start me back up for 11/11!

Another important thing is to have a drop-dead reason WHY you want to lose weight.  It has to be a reason that will trump all of the excuses you might throw at it - something that is worth more to you than the yummy food and relaxation that has gotten you to where you are now.

Honestly, I got a book on the internet called Thinner Thinking by Adam Armstrong.  In the first chapter, he talks about having a reason to lose weight - something that really means something to you.  It took me three months from the time I downloaded the book before I finally figured out what my reason is - and it took another couple of months before I really put the plan into practice.  However, knowing WHY I'm doing this makes all the difference for me.

I suffer from depression, and I've found that my poor eating habits and lack of exercise were contributing to making it worse.  So my reason is that I want to be able to live my life without antidepressants, and the only way for me to do that is to eat a healthier diet and MOVE!

Hopefully this will help.

Unless you're super active, I think you're right on target.  When I plug your numbers into the calorie target tool on this site, it says you should be eating 1850 calories per day.

Ensure (250 calories) - or even better, Ensure Plus (350 calories) - will add calories without you having to consume anything more than a shake (just like the SlimFast you're already having). That was my thinking on that.

And I wasn't saying to have the lower calories foods - I was saying NOT to have them, but to have the full calorie versions of anything you might already be consuming that is lowfat, low calories.

Rather than Slim Fast, why not try Ensure?  Also, try substituting full-fat, full-calorie versions of some foods for some of the lowfat, low calorie versions you currently eat.  It doesn't have to be all of them, but that's one way to up the calories without going TOO crazy.

Edited to add:  One thing I do is use butter instead of a low cal margarine.  Just a suggestion.

The Lounge Old Scars.... mederma? procedures? Help! Nov 06 2007

I have a dear friend that has a number of old scars.  Her plastic surgeon was amazed at the way they are healing now.  I know that she does several things to work on healing them - including a daily massage (of the scars) with a blend of 15 drops helichrysum oil in 1 ounce of sweet almond oil.  (I do aromatherapy on the side, and I made the blend for her.)  You only need to use a few drops, so the bottle lasts several months.  Hope this helps!

Of the restaurants you mentioned, I know at least some of them have a calorie friendly section on the menu (Chili's guiltless grill and Applebee's weight watchers menu).  I always check out the menu online before I go.  That way I know what I'm having and can plan it into my day!  Hope this helps!  (and yes, there are many things other than salads on those menus!)

Fitness Burn meter Nov 05 2007
01:18 (UTC)
When you say the two numbers, do you mean the two numbers on the burn meter?  If so, the top number (larger of the two) is the total number of calories you burn in a day.  This is calculated using the height, weight, and activity level you entered when you signed up (and is updated every time you log a new weight).  The bottom number shows how many of those calories you have actually burned so far, based on the fact that the counter is zeroed out at midnight and goes until midnight the next day.

Foods Any recipes using ground turkey? Nov 02 2007

You can pretty much substitute Ground Turkey in any recipe that calls for Ground beef - chili, meatloaf, tacos, etc.  You need to realize that it isn't going to taste the same, but it can still be good.  One thing to think about - if you're adding spices, it is much more likely to taste good than if you are eating it plain.

Or a quick grilled cheese - or even better, put it on a whole-grain tortilla (quesadilla, I guess!)  You could also try some nuts, or trail mix (although trail mix might be too sweet.)

Also, if you've been doing the same exercise routine for a long time, your body may have become accustomed to it so it doesn't burn as much as it used to.  Perhaps a change would help - a different video or class perhaps?  Marneedear's suggestion about strength training is also a good idea - perhaps you could replace some of your walks with these types of exercises instead.
Foods just wondering? Oct 31 2007
17:21 (UTC)
If you check the food browser, club soda has 6 mg of sodium PER OUNCE - not a good choice.  However, plain water has 5 mg per 8 ounces and seltzer has 10mg per 12 ounces - making it only slightly "worse" than plain water.

My employer provides the Fitness Center to us for free, so it would be a shame if I didn't use it!

As to the choice of cycling workouts, I am still a true beginner - it has been more than 10 years since I rode a bike, and more than 20 since I rode one with any regularity. Right now my goals are to get used to my new bike, break it in, and work my way up to being able to spend an hour or more on the bike without feeling like I'm going to die. If I can get that done by springtime, I'll be happy!

Now that fall weather is in full swing (and with the time change it will be getting dark SOOOO early) I'm seriously thinking of my winter routine.  I intend to do endurance workouts (from the book, Fitness Cycling) 5 days a week.  I've also signed up for the Fitness Center at work, where I will be doing strength training 3 days a week.  My question - what do you guys (and gals) think about my using the rowing machine at the fitness center as an additional cardio activity?  I like the fact that it uses both arms and legs, and I can see myself sticking with it because it reminds me of rowing on the lake when I was a kid (just like riding my bike reminds me of the freedom my bicycle meant to me when I was young).  I'd appreciate any thoughts, pro or con.
