Sounds really good, but where does one get this Almond Breeze I keep hearing about?  I haven't found it in any of the grocery stores in my area.

Thank You Thank You Thank You!!!  I would so love to hire a personal trainer and work in a gym but living in a rural area means that the closest gym is a 45 min drive one way.  Working 10-12 hours a day, 6-7 days a week doesn't leave much down time for working out.

I have purchased resistance bands, but feel a bit unsure that I'm using them correctly as they don't seem much of a challenge when following the little booklet that came with the set.

As far as my diet goes, it's always been bad...so I'm working slowly and steadily to improve it.  I am trying to get in the suggested number and type of servings of the infamous "nutrition pyramid" and yet keep it at/around 1500 cal a day.

Any other suggestions?  I'm clay.....mold me!  Laughinglol

Thank You so much!  I am a babe in the woods with all this work-out stuff.  I have always been a walker, but walking is no longer enough since I hit 50 and quit smoking.

I figured I should do something to keep the muscles warm and try to loosen them up, but didn't know if I should do more or not.  Any other advice you can offer is greatly appreciated!

I love to marinate my veggies in a mixture of soy sauce,  EVOO,  garlic powder, and worchestershire sauce  for at least 20 minutes (couple of hours is better) and grill them.  This is good with just about every veggie there is....except perhaps tomato.

Rather than "diet", why not concentrate on eating more healthfully?  And drinking more water?  And yes, a consistant workout schedule is a must.

SEveral years ago (back when I was much younger and had energy to burn!) I spent 60-90 minutes a day on the treadmill.  I did not diet, ate junk, no fruits or veggies, drank only tea or soda.

In 2 months time I lost 2 pant sizes and never saw a change on the scale.  It can happen!

Fitness shinsplints! any advice on getting rid of them?!?!? Oct 17 2007
17:09 (UTC)
1

I was informed by a personal trainer (later confirmed by my chiro who specializes in sports injury) that shin splints are caused by weak calf muscles and over-extending your walking stride.  Or as it was explained to me, the leg in front is further out than the back leg.  Basically you're "pulling" yourself along instead of pushing off for the next step.

The best thing I have found to end them is to keep working on exercises to strengthen my calves, and I don't have any trouble with shin pain anymore.

Health & Support Meatballs- protein? Oct 17 2007
17:02 (UTC)

Meatballs are certainly a source of protein, but a healthy source?  It would be hard to say.  If the meat is very lean, and they are baked, they might be okay.  But my guess is they are not very lean.

Schools must form their lunch programs to fit the nutitional needs of high school age boys i.e. about 2500 cal per day.  More calories than most need.  I worked at a high school for years and couldn't figure out why I was gaining weight until I realized how many calories were on that lunch tray every day!  Surprised  however, it wouldn't do you any harm to change up your diet a bit.  Even tho' turkey is a healthy food, man cannot live on turkey alone.

I would go ahead and get the school lunch, eat the salad (they always serve salad with spagetti), drink the milk, eat the meatballs and some of the pasta.

I have never been able to find flaxseed at Wal-mart.  The only place in my area I can find them is Whole Foods.  I use the flaxseed oil and mix my own salad dressing with it.  Has a nuttier and tangy-er taste than EVOO.

It is possible to find flaxseed capsules at some pharmacy stores in the supplement aisle.  You might check that out at Wal-mart.

perhaps you are building muscle.  The worst thing anyone can do when working out on a regular basis is put too much emphasis on the numbers  on the scale.

Muscle weighs SO much more than fat.  Dump your scale, or at least stay off it for a while.  Concentrate instead on how your clothes fit.  How fit you are.  How much easier those 40 min workouts seem than they did when you first started them.

at your height, I'm afraid you will never be a HEALTHY and FIT 110 pounds.  I am a tall woman, and I sympathize with your desire to be thin and petite.  We can't.  Not if we want to be healthy.

Seriously, change up your focus and you'll feel better about yourself and how healthy you are!

Weight Loss lost 9lbs Oct 13 2007
14:52 (UTC)

It's possible that some of the weight is water, possibly even most of it.  Not knowing your stats or what you're doing to lose the weight it's hard to say.

I found the meters confusing at first also.  If you note the 2 boxes (one for calories in, one for calories out) have a total at the top.  In the burn meter box, that is the number that you will burn in 24 hours based on the profile you entered.  How much your body uses in a day to preform basic functions -like breathing, blinking- and what you expend in calories according to how you classified in your life -moderately active, sedentary, etc...-

If you will note the bottom of the box is a darker shade, and that shows how many calories you've already burned today.

Weight Loss Fiber + Water= weight gain? Oct 12 2007

Groovy Girl        ;  It is usually recommended by the medical community that an adult female eat an average of 25-30 g of fiber daily, so you're in good shape really..  As pointed out, you may just be retaining some fluid.  How are your fingers?  that is the first place I notice water retention.  Also if you've been working out more than you were, you may be trading muscle for fat and that will keep the scale from moving.  How are your clothes fitting?  How is your energy level?

Bananee    What type of slt substitute do you use?

Health & Support Anyone else trying to quit smoking?? Oct 12 2007

Julie, I took Welbutrin and it really helped me.  But the thing I did that made all the difference was that I was able to change my mindset from  quitting is something I HAVE to do, to quitting is something I WANT to do.

Just as saying "I can't have ice cream" makes you want that Rocky Road all the more, quitting smoking works the same way.  So many times I quit with the attitude of "I will never get to have another ......" and my quit failed.  But when I changed my internal voices to the reasons I wanted to quit, it became so much easier to resist the urges and cravings.

Hang in there.  If ever you need to contact me, feel free to do so.

Julie,   Congrats on making the decision to stop what is arguably the most dangerous habit you can have.  I will celebrate my 2 years of freedom from the Nico-demon on Jan 12th '08.

It will be one of the most difficult things you will ever do, but one of the things you will most proud of doing.  And one of the most worthwhile in  every way.

If you need someone to help you thru, let me know!

Thank You!  I try to stick with only "good" fats such as EVOO and Flaxseed.  If I have to cook in oil I generally use Canola.  Apparently I'm not doing as poorly as I thought!

My trainer says that if you feel so punky you don't want to get outta bed, stay there.  Otherwise go ahead and work out.....lightly.  Don't do as heavy a workout as your normal routine.  Take a short walk, 20-30 minutes.  No cardio.  REally push the water.
