Weight Loss So strange! Oct 11 2008

I agree with gi-jane. i recently lived in the Czech Republic for 6 weeks over the summer and all of my judgements about the people in the countries i visited (poland, vienna, budapest) is from what i actually SAW them do.. by this i mean, when i was at a restaurant, i would notice what they were eating for example. but i don't know if they eat out like that every night, i don't know what they cook at home other nights, i don't know what they ate for the rest of the day, etc..

what i DID notice (since living there for 6 weeks, we actually went to the grocery store and not just restaurants) the way people eat over there is very fresh, not many packaged foods to buy, so this could also play into their overall weight.

also, there is a LOT of walking done in many of those countries i visited and this could play a role as well. low-fat items were often rare but they had some stuff. and from what i remember, portions were bigger at some restaurants than others but they really never offered take-home boxes, maybe meaning that people stopped eating when they were full and left the leftovers to be thrown away instead of taking it home and "indulging" again.

just some thoughts, hope this helped.

congrats for u!! i had mine out laparoscopic on July 30th and am sooo happy it's gone!! i haven't tested out too many fatty foods (cuz i'm dieting anyway) but what i've had a problem with is too much fiber. if i even eat one Fiber One bar, i get an upset stomach and have to use the bathroom soon. I'm only 21 so i recovered fairly quickly, i was out and about in under 3 days..

Honestly, once you heal, everything should be great! it was quite uncomfortable after the surgery.. i couldn’t sleep comfortably, i had to find a special position, and the gas they pumped in me left my right arm with pain... which the Vicodin took care of.. anyway, good luck!!

i wash my hands after applying the lotion but i try to use soap on the palms and only water on the tops and pat dry. i don't know about your fingers, maybe try to get lighter and lighter as u get to the fingers. like, your arm regular, tops of hands a little lighter and fingers the lightest so that it's not noticeable that your fingers are not perfect. What L'oreal lotion do you use?

Weight Loss Anyone here hit a plateau after a large amount of weight loss? Aug 31 2008
14:21 (UTC)

In response to mmerren (Mike):

You need to up your calories. the MINIMUM a man should be eating is 1500 calories and that's if they are lying in bed all day. When you add in factors like exercise and extreme sports and potentially over 1000 minutes a week of exercise, you need to be eating WAY more to fuel your body.

Yes, you are losing weight rapidly and it's nice to see the pounds come off, but you are losing weight in a very unhealthy manor. This type of weight-loss typically leads to not only putting the weight back on, but problems with your health as well.

The saying goes "slow and steady wins the race". I think you need to slow down and enjoy the amount of food that your body is allowed to eat. On a daily basis, you should not have a calorie deficit more than 1000 calories. This means if you burn 3000 calories per day, the MINIMUM that you should be eating is 2000 calories. Please take this advice. A moderator should have already been in here to say something, but has not. For your personal health, take the advice.

I'm also leading by example. I've lost almost 40 pounds and my boyfriend has noticed, of course. He's put on about 40 pounds since i met him 4 years ago and he knows it. he's a little bit self-conscious about his weight but i never minded and i never wanted to hurt his feelings. (i love him -- any way, shape, or form). what scared me was the other day i was curious so i checked his BMI. according to the calculator, he's entered into "obesity". i doubt this is true but it scared me a little bit. i don’t want him to have problems when he's older so i said something to him, but i didn't ATTACK him. i said “you know, you could easily lose 20-30 pounds by your birthday (late December) and that would put you in your normal weight range.” he was intrigued. he said, “can you lose weight that fast, too?” and i said “yea, i already have, i lost 20 pounds in two months.” he was even more interested. then, we made a bet. our bet is to see which of us could lose 30 pounds first. if he puts the work in and changes his eating habits and shows that he really wants to do this, he will definitely beat me. but that's okay. i want him to be happy and healthy.

i have the pb2 and while it tastes okay and it's great that it's so low cal, it's a hassle to me. to mix it up and use it and have to scrape it off of whatever you mixed in it.. it's alittle anoying (imo). i'm addicted to better 'n peanut butter. i think it tastes great. not exactly like regular peanut butter but it's very creamy and delicious. lastly, i'd like to say that i do love regular peanut butter (chunky) and i feel that as long as you make room for it in your daily calorie intake, there's no reason why you can’t have the one you want. it's a great source of good fats and if you enjoy it, continue to enjoy it!

Weight Loss Weight Loss Plateaus, Ready to Cry Aug 21 2008

You say you don't want to eat more calories but you need to. 1200/day is the minimum a women should be eating. When you add in 30-45 minutes of exercise 5-6 times a week, you're body is most likely burning too many calories for the amount you're eating. You should be aiming for a 500-1000 calorie deficit per day (but never go under 1200). You're plateau is most likely caused by the fact that there's a good chance you're in starvation mode and your body is holding on to every calorie it gets. Your best bet in my opinion is to up your calories.

I calculated your BRM  (with an estimated age of 30 y/o) and the amount of calories you burn by doing absolutely nothing all day (lying in bed), is 1389. If you were looking to maintain, on a moderately active day you would eat 2153 calories. Since you’re wanting to lose weight, you would eat a deficit of 500-1000 calories per day. This means 2153-500 = 1653. With this example, you would lose approximately 1 pound per week (500 calorie deficit per day times 7 days per week = 3500 calorie deficit per week).

I hope this helps and I hope you give raising your calories a chance because many people after hitting a plateau raised their calorie intake and continued to go on and lose more weight.

hey guys, i'm not in the group, just following along..

i just wanted to chime in for tlc0219 because i used to get blisters all the time. what helps me out when i have a blister, is blister blocker cushions by band-aid brand.

http://www.amazon.com/Band-Aid-Blister-Block- Cushions-4-Count/dp/B000FELQC2

when i don't have a blister and don't WANT to have a blister, they have another product called blister blocker stick which you rub on the area that you usually get blisters and you typically don't.

http://www.amazon.com/Band-Aid-Activ-Flex-Bli ster-Block-0-34-Ounce/dp/B000UWS70I

another thing that has helped me in the past was to put shoe gels in your shoes.. the kind that are only for the heel. it lifted my heel up a tiny bit to make it harder for me to get a blister.

http://www.amazon.com/Dr-Scholls-Massaging-Me dium-Packages/dp/B000FKHHL0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF 8&s=hpc&qid=1218024908&sr=1-1

hope this info helps because i know how discouraging it can be to have a blister and to continue to get them!!

Weight Loss To what extent is a calorie a calorie? Aug 06 2008
12:56 (UTC)

i don’t have anything to back up which side i take on the issue. i agree with eveliina about the fruit being able to keep you fuller, longer.. same goes for veggies, lean protein and fiber.

as to your question about whether or not JUST counting calories will result in weight loss, the answer is yes. for two months i stopped exercising for different reasons and continued to lose weight (20lbs).

what we may be forgetting is that not only are you losing weight, but you are also losing muscle mass. as for this information, i'm sure someone will be along shortly to give better information than i have about it.

what it all comes down to for me, anyway, is to do your best to eat healthily, have some treats when you feel like it and can fit it into your calorie allotment, and then if you feel you're still not getting all of the proper nutrients, take a daily multivitamin to help you out.

Ps. another argument that you may soon find is that exercise is simply good for your heart. many studies prove this to be true. in the long run, you're going to want to exercise to keep the weight off, to be able to eat more throughout the day when your calorie limit drops, and to be able to take advantage of the many health benefits you’ll receive from it, especially for when you get older!

hope some of this helped and that someone else comes and helps me out on my areas where I don't know as much..

Fitness Pilates Reformer, loving it!! May 15 2008

my mom has one and bought it from QVC as well a few years ago.. she loves QVC  and a lot of times gets stuff we never use or don't use often but the Pilates  Reformer we both LOVE! i go away to school but whenever i have a break (summer, winter) i actually LOOK FORWARD to using it. It's an amazing thing and i love how you can feel your core actually working, that's a good feeling from an exercise "machine". congrats on the buy!

i used to go by the 8 -- 8 ounce cups per day but now i go by "drink approximately half your weight in ounces".. meaning someone who weighs 175 pounds would drink approximately 87.5 ounces per day which equals almost 11 cups per day.

but yah the "tip" about urine color is also very helpful.. keep an eye on that

the weird thing about my publix is it's random to see the Western Alternative bagels. (although i live in a college town so they might just go fast) but usually it doesnt seem like they get many in at once so it's sometimes rare to find them.

also, at my Publix, they arent in the bread isle theyre actually over by the bakery where they have individual bagels for sale. hope this helps!

ps. the blueberry ones are delicious!
