Fitness is anyone more of a jogger than a runner... May 22 2008
12:53 (UTC)

yes!  jogging is something i can handle for a fairly long duration, whereas running just speeds up my heart because my muscles have to work so hard to do it.  i just don't think my body is a fan of that stuff...and when you're working at such a high heart rate, it's basically "sprinting" to your body and the cardio becomes anerobic vs aerobic...which means you burn calories differently since it's not using oxygen anymore...which is a "whole 'nother" story!

new genes!  and/or a cal deficit.  the people above me are right.  that is the only way to get rid of fat.  your genes will determine where it comes off first, but if you keep at it, you'll get rid of that pesky fluff!

Fitness what is the best routine to stay active and fit WITHOUT gaining muscle? May 20 2008

building muscle only actually happens when 2 things are going on:

1] you're eating more calories than you expend

2] you're doing strength/resistance training with pretty heavy weights

and even if you do resistance training but are not eating more calories than you burn, you're just going to end up toning your muscles!

Used-ta-could-do-it! is my favorite excuse coming from the newly injured.

Hmm, don't try exercising at the same level as a previously sedentary, but now very enthusiastic 40-something that you used-ta-could-do when you were an athlete in tip-top shape as a 20-something! Eeeease into it! :-)

Ease into it gently/progressively enough, and you'll be doing all that sexy stuff you used-ta-could-do in due time! Yeah, I said sexy! :-D

Fitness Overnight Mystery: Pulled Calf Muscle in my sleep?? Apr 25 2008

I vote for stretching your calves.  I get charlie horses (the ridiculously painful cramps in the calves) especially in my left leg due to some nerve damage from a car accident over 3 years ago.  If I don't stretch enough (daily), I wake up in the middle of the night and have to use my full body weight to push down on my heel and stretch out that tight muscle!  Ow.

I imagine the flip-flops were no help.  You may have a potassium deficiency, but try stretching.  I thought I had a potassium deficiency...but the real culprit was my lack of stretching.  Since discovering yoga, the cramps have magically disappeared!!  Whodathunk?  Down-dog is my favorite, but a standing calf stretch works just as well!  Hold them for 20-30 seconds and repeat 1-3x...do this before bed, or any time, really!

Weight Loss Do You Gain or Lose Weight When You're In a Relationship? Apr 15 2008

hmm, pre-relationship...when i still have the jitters when i first see him before a date...when i'm super ridiculously giddy...i tend to lose a little weight.

then the comfort sets in and LOTS of eating together occurs.  booo.  so now i go for the active ones who don't compromise physical activity for snuggling.  well, not too often.  although that is VERY tempting.

Weight Loss Late Night Eating - Prevention Mar 20 2008

Ah, this is the bane of my 'diet'!!  I eat well all day long and feel good...and then I see my mom munching on something delicious and have to partake.

My best advice is to stay busy and out of the kitchen.  Stay in your room where there is no food!!!  Don't wander out!  I wish the cabinets and fridge would self-lock after dinner and only let out a piece of fruit as an emergency!

I'm not the type to leave the house in search of more food, so that's not an issue...  But yeah, I've found that just staying locked up in my room and keeping busy keeps thoughts of food outta my head and keeps the actual food outta my stomach!!!  Tea doesn't really work late at night for me...it makes me think of what I really want...and then I unload on a binge!

i thought the jersey city-ish area wasn't too bad...i mean, compared to manhattan.  i suppose i was going with craigslist rents, but if 500-700 is unrealistic, i may as well live in a hole in one of the boroughs!  i don't mind a few roomies.

i know what it's like to have wrist issues and wanting to do yoga at the same time!

once i broke my wrist...and another time...it felt like i fractured it again...both times i had an excruciating time with hand-balancing postures and down-dogs.  my advice?

don't do those poses where you have to be on your hands or put pressure on your wrists.  it just don't feel good!  and what don't feel good, you shouldn't do!  ya heardddd...hahha.  all joking aside, take it very easy.  if you feel a twinge, you shouldn't push it.  you might be able to handle the weight when you're on all fours, but be cautious.

and the instructor will most definitely be able to help with modifications!

namaste!

I have a meeting tomorrow with my own Personal Trainer...he's been there and done that...yay for resources.

I just received my NASM Foundations Course in the mail today...after I take a look, I'll have a better idea of how long it will take.  The training director at the gym who offered me the job said that if I have any brain at all [and he said it looked like I did, considering the 3.6 GPA and two BA's], it shouldn't take me long.  We'll see how well my brain is doing these days!

Thanks all for the advice.  I'll be talking to the training director again on Monday...I'll let you know if I decide to try and negotiate a higher pay.

And well...I always wanted to be a bartender for a little while...Haha, here's my chance!  But is there a demand for unexperienced bartenders?!  Oyyyyy.  I know how to make a mean rum & coke...pouring a draft doesn't look too hard.  What else do you people drink?  I'm sure I can concoct tasty libations.  ;-)

i think i could stand having 2 jobs, but the problem is finding the time for it.

i need a lot of face time in the gym, especially to get my name out there...i may be working many hours essentially for free.

no experience = non-attractiveness to other gyms...i'm not certified yet, so i consider myself lucky they offered a job!  i know i'm a catch, for sure, but now i have to prove it.  i'll do some research on the going rate....but i don't know if i'll be able to find it, especially for someone without experience.  i think $8 is minimum...and i guess the least i could do is ask.

but still...is $10 ok to ask for?  is $12 just ridiculous?  especially if the going rate is $8?

Fitness YOUR VIEWS:Running V walking Dec 29 2007
23:21 (UTC)

both are good exercise...but i feel like running is a better conditioning tool.  anyone can walk, but not everyone can run [well, do it and enjoy it].  running also batters your body, while walking is gentle.

walking to burn calories...kinda time inefficient.  walking to get in some exercise, A+.  running to burn fat..probably not gonna happen unless you can sustain it for more than 20-30 min.  running for heart health and body conditioning, A+.

was the professor trying to argue something?  that one is better than the other?  one will always be better than the other...it all depends on the circumstances..

i have a rod going thru my right femur and have screws at the hip and around my knee...i'm really tight in my right hip because of it...and i know stretching and massaging hurts, but you gotta do it!!!

go EASY.  a little will go a long way.  and you HAVE TO BE CONSISTENT.  every damn day.  i was VERY lazy with this when i was in recovery..and i think that's why i still have issues with it 3 years later!  if only i had stretched it more!  warmth will totally help with the stretching too...

i'm slowly easing the tightness in my right hip...but it's still pretty apparent that it's bad because while sitting indian-style, my right knee is really high up in the air...in comparison with the open left hip whose knee is nearly flat on the floor!

i just got the numetrix sports bra with a polar transmitter/F6 watch.

logs cals/time spent exercising/weekly exercise goals/max HR, avg HR/whether you performed a light/mod/heavy workout...it's pretty cool!

numetrix and polar make sports bras that have a transmitter that you snap in and sensors built right into the bra.  you can purchase a watch to go with the transmitter/bra or you can hop on an elliptical/treadmill to transmit the signal straight to the machine!

i just bought a numetrix bra with a polar watch/transmitter ($150) ...it took a little while to get used to the functions on the watch, but it's awesome that you can count your calories/exercise time/THR...it logs the data right on the watch for you!  a little pricey, but worth all the info it provides.

Fitness Couch to 5K plan Dec 27 2007
18:14 (UTC)

i'm technically on week three, but i've been changing up the runs a little.

one is a mile jog [6.0 mph], then an interval of sprinting [8.0mph]/walking [4.0mph]

one is an interval of jogging/running for 20 min [5.0-6.4mph]

one is just jogging for 20 min at my THR [165, which happens to fall between 5.0-5.6mph]

i'm going to attempt week 4 as soon as i get over this stupid sickness.
