You aren't getting enough calories.  Eating 1600 and burning 600 means you have a net of only 1000 calories.  That is so not enough.  Try upping your calories.  Yes, it sounds counter-productive, but it's not.  You will be more satisfied and you will lose weight.

I don't think that 150 lbs for 5'8" is a lot for your size.  I'm 5'8" and i couldn't weigh less than 145 w/out looking like a skeleton...

i'm pregnant now, but when i was trying to lose i ate around 1500 cals a day when i didn't exercise... so if you are working your butt off, you should eat more calories than that.  also, you might try changing things up.  don't do just the elliptical for cardio... and don't do the same amount of calories for every breakfast or every lunch, etc.

yeah it sucks, but the rules clearly state no knives.  he brought a knife...  the pic on yahoo! news shows the kid holding what looks like a pocket knife that also contains a fork and spoon.

i realize his intent wasn't to hurt any of his classmates, but his parents should have better sense.  it was before columbine and virginia tech that i was in grade school and i wouldn't have taken something like that.

those that enforced the rule had no choice.  i agree that the rules should be changed, but how are the teachers/faculty supposed to know when something is brought for intent to harm or for something less?

spell it alot when it's two words... a lot.

just cruise along in the fast lane, and then speed up when i try to pass them.  grrrr!

i cannot live without jalapenos, cheese, ranch, or MUSTARD!!  i love yellow mustard on tons of stuff.  i eat it on my burritos with louisiana hot sauce, on buscuits, dip my pizza crust and popcorn in it... i HATE mayo or anything close to it, so it goes on my burgers. mustard goes on my hotdogs, too (no kethcup).

not sure if it's healthy, though.  it has a ton of sodium in it.

try measuring yourself instead of just weighing in.  you may be losing inches and/or gaining muscle and it might not be reflected on the scales just yet.  i would also spend a little more time with the weights than 15 minutes... and work out your abs/core everyday that you exercise.  the more muscle you build, the more calories you burn.  i wouldn't be drinking the protein shakes unless you are doing some more weight lifting... there are a lot of calories in those and it doesn't sound like you are doing a work-out that really calls for one afterwards.

The Lounge New York proposes the first universal fat tax. Dec 22 2008

I don't smoke, drink soda, drink much alcohol, or buy much fast food so my opinion is probably moot... but I think that these items are not necessary and are free game.  You have the right to choose to pay for one of these items.  As far as poor people being taxed... if they are so poor that taxing cigarettes and such is going to hurt them, they shouldn't be wasting money on those items to begin with.  Not smoking is free.  Tap water is free.  Hangover-free mornings are free.  And it's cheaper to buy food at the grocery store than to eat at a fast food place everyday.

But again, I'm not addicted to anything so I don't care that there are taxes on these items.  I can't say for sure, but if I was, I think that I would still say that sin taxes aren't a bad thing.

you may be able to find a decent position that doesn't really have anything to do with your major with a company that you like... just to get your foot in the door.  then, once they see how valuable you are, you could apply for the position you want.  you also might try doing an unpaid internship for a few months.  that will give you some experience for other companies, and it might make the company doing the internship want to hire you on full time... that's what i had to do with my degree.

Recipes Anyone know of a site or tool that convert adds up caloric total of a recipe? Nov 16 2008

if you hover your mouse over foods, there will be a link with the name "new recipe" in the drop down menu.  if you click that, it will take to the site's recipe analyzer.  will figure everything up for you.  sometimes, it will give you a yellow triangle saying it couldn't analyze something.  if you search for that ingredient alone, you can see how the site measures it and that could be the problem.  sometimes it just doesn't recognize the item, but you can use the item number from the address bar.

eg. - http://caloriecount.about.com/calories-splend a-brown-sugar-blend-i101169.  the number for this item is 101169 and could be entered in the recipe as: 1 cup [101169] Splenda/Brown Sugar Blend

hope this helps!!!

edit: if you do have to look up an item, you may want to open a new browser with the CC website.  If you leave the page with your recipe, it will all disappear and you will have to start over!!

Weight Loss I feel like I have the wrong idea about frame sizes- does it mean your bones are wider, denser or both depending on size? Nov 12 2008
14:06 (UTC)

i have been puzzled by this same thing!  according to this website, i have a small frame as my wrists are pretty small.  but i have a HUGE ribcage, and if i were to be any smaller than about 135 lbs, i'd start to look sickly.  all of my bones poke out at about 140 lbs.  i'm between 5'7" and 5'8", but i could NEVER be smaller than a size 7.  even with no skin on me, my hips would be too big to fit in anyting smaller.  so i don't feel like i have a small frame at all.

Weight Loss At 5'8 140 whatmightmy size be? Oct 30 2008
15:55 (UTC)

i am the same as caitling - i'm 5'8" and at 145, I wear a size 10/11 or a size 31... I'm a small frame, according to this site, and a pear shape (that could change what size you wear as well as height, weight, frame, etc.)

Original Post by maha-kisa:

When you look at File->Daily-> pick that exercise and scroll down twice, it will show the max heart rate during the session and the average. Anything unusual there? Sometimes Polar gets crazy and reads something like 230, which throws off the estimate.

no, it says max was 165 (104%) - this was while walking up a VERY steep hill - and avg was 132 (84%).  i went walking/jogging yesterday for 30 minutes and it said i burned 334.  max was 166 (105%) and avg was 136 (86%).

I don't know if they are a good idea or not... but I have them, too.  I put them on once a week and look in the mirror.  I get sad that I can't wear them yet, but then I get even more determined to meet my goals for the next week.

Thank you trhawley,

My HRM said moderate, but I didn't feel like I was doing much... My resting heart rate is about 70 and when I walk at a normal pace, it's around 108... I was somewhere between a fast walk and really slow jog when I was at 132... I usually walk 3 miles in 40 mins... so that's about 4.5 mph, right?  CC says I burn about 297 calories at that pace in 40 mins and about 371 in 50 mins... so 542 just seemed out there...

you're not eating enough.  eating too little can hinder your weight loss.  i searched for free bmr calculators and using the stats you gave on this post, the birthdate on your page, and using an activity level of Lightly Active... the average amount of calories you should be eating is around 1500-1600 calories a day.  as you lose, that number will go down.  but for right now, you are eating too little.

go for the thin and crispy crusts or eat just the toppings and leave the crust behind.  an all veggie pizza is better for you too... try picking off the meaty stuff.  may not be the best way to go, but at least you could eat more than one piece.
