The Lounge Etiquette for Ignoring Friends Requests on Facebook Oct 28 2009

I don't think it sends a message saying you've ignored them!

To be honest I think someone might not even notice you've ignored their request while if you send an email saying why you're declining their request they might take that as an excuse. And if you're going to the bother of the emailing, then I don't know just makes it sound like you really don't want to be their friend to me.

At least I once added someone and he sent a message about how he doesn't accept invites from undergrads because of exams blah blah blah, where if he'd just ignored my request I definitely wouldn't have checked up on whether he'd accepted me or not. A week later he added me....strange man.

Fat and happy. If you're happy being fat (in this hypothetical situation) you wouldn't want to change surely. I'd like to be thin because it sometimes makes me unhappy being fat. But if I was more unhappy thin then that wouldn't solve anything!

Re. people having a go when it's absolutely nothing to do with them...

On the bus the other day a young girl and old woman got on at the same time and the young girl offered the last seat to the old woman, who declined saying she was getting off soon anyway. The young girl said so was she and the old woman had such a go at her for wasting money getting the bus when she should be walking because she looked like students and students don't have much money etc. etc. etc! Where the girl got off would have been a 20-30 minute walk.

After a pleasing half marathon time last year, 6 months into my running career I got shin splints and my times started to get worse. Yesterday I did that same half marathon again and was so nervous I'd do worse than last year but I PB'd by 4.5 mins - 1:40:53! (And beat my boyfriend - who beat me last week in a 10k)

Fitness Running Shoes? Oct 05 2009

The best type of shoes depend on your feet and your gait----some shoes focus on support over cushioning, some cushioning over support, some brands are wider, some narrower, etc.--the right shoe really depends on your foot and your body mechanics.  Getting the proper shoe for you is super important for avoiding injuries.

I'd recommend going to a specialty shop (a true running shop not just a fashion sports shop) and get them to help you find out what type of shoes to buy...if everything there is out of your price range shop around (sales!!) given the new info you've acquired from the experts!

+1 on this.  A good shoe for one person might cause you grief if you don't have a similar gait.  Although others might tell you you're better off running barefoot. :)  But that's the subject for a new thread!

Clint

Agree. Though this can be expensive. I assume if you've been going to the gym you have some shoes you can wear to just start out until you decide you actually like running. Then get some proper running shoes that suit you.

I used to be in Oxford university and left my keys with the college porter. Not having a porter anymore and having to look after my own keys was quite a shock! I have some tights with a pocket on the back or tiny pouch in the front. I've heard of people tying them to their shoe laces or to their bra strap. I've recently bought a little pouch for £5 that slips over my shoelaces.

Or bury them and dig them up when you're done?!

I did a 5 mile race yesterday and from the very start I noticed a funny squeaking noise but I was racing so didn't have time to look and just ignored it. At the end I looked and found a rock, an actual rock about 1" square lodged in the tread under my heel. I could probably have come 2nd instead of 3rd without that rock lol! And on the way home I got another one rammed in there. Really strange - it's never happened before.

I'm so excited. I actually placed in a race today. I did a 5 mile race, it was just a small field but I did it in 37:55 and came 3rd female, just a few seconds behind the woman who came 2nd and a few seconds in front of 4th place (the winner beat us all by several minutes!). I even got a trophy. I've never placed before. YEY! :D

I'm 21 and do triathlons. I'm 5'2" and around 140lbs so not too different from yourself. I maintain on around 2500 calories and train approx 7-10 hours a week atm. You're younger, slightly taller and train more so 3000 calories doesn't sound too off for maintenance. Everyone is different though-you can try out 2500 cals for a couple of weeks and see what happens with your weight.

Anyway, why I find it interesting / fun probably would make me seem pretty crazy (haha I started to write it out). Let's just say I find mental things interesting and fun (including different states of mind... ED's are just a shift in your state of mind towards your body and wants).

But surely experiencing a shift in your state of mind that you can't control is terrifying rather than fun? A disorder is not about just looking at something from another perspective. You have no choice in the matter. You're trapped.

Do I support it for other people? Nooo. Would you support a paraplegic to step into the ring with a pro-boxer? Boxing is fun! For sure! But only if you are physically able to do it and know how to keep safe.

But many people with EDs do think they know how to keep safe and that what they're doing is ok. If you are safe and healthy, then surely that's not an ED just a normal diet? Or maybe not, I mean - I've had disordered thoughts about food but I've never ever undereaten/purged/whatever and I'd never say that it was fun or interesting - just frustrating and upsetting and sometimes consuming.

Sorry, I can't work out how to type outside the quote box.

And in reply to the OP:

I'm almost the opposite. I've frequented these boards for years and thought I knew a lot about EDs and the mindset etc and would disagree with those who would troll around saying 'just eat something', but over the past couple of years my friend has developed anorexia, and it's so frustrating to me. I'm starting to understand less and less and I really do just want to scream at her. She's such an intelligent girl. She knows full well what she's doing to herself. But she's changed in personality too. She's not the girl we knew and everyone notices this. Also, however selfish this sounds it just adds to my point of how experiencing it first hand has almost decreased my understanding - she's 'choosing' (I know, I know - she can't help it etc. but I mean no-one's doing it to her) to do it to herself, but what about what she's doing to her family and friends? And then I go round in circles and just feel so sad for her again.

Anyway, I'll be doing my psych rotation in about 9 months so I'll see if all this changes again.

Interesting and fun are positive terms. Therefore to describe an ED as these things is surely pro-ED?

I'd be interested to hear though WHY you thought it was interesting/fun and WHAT about it you found to be interesting/fun?

Fitness Marathon questions - please help! Sep 09 2009

Long run paces – should it be 60 to 90 seconds slower than middle run paces, or 60 to 90 seconds slower than the pace I intend on running during the actual marathon?

I think about 60 seconds slower than the pace you intend to run the marathon.

Should I run my first few miles of the marathon at a slower pace than my other miles, or should I just keep the same pace the whole way through?

It will be hard not to run slower at the start I expect due to crowding.

How many times do you have to pee during the marathon? Do you have to wait in line?

The lines weren't long and I didn't need to go that much but I kept stopping every couple of miles when there were toilets out of paranoia that if I didn't go now, I might need to before the next opportunity. Probably wasted about 10-20 mins on toilet stops.

Did you walk during the marathon? At what mile and for how long?

Through water stations and on and off after about mile 20 for a total of maybe half a mile. I was suffering badly!

Do you recommend caffeine? How much? Will it make me pee?

I don't drink tea/coffee ever so I'm not really a caffeine girl. EVERYTHING makes me pee!

It's officially against the rules to have an Ipod, but I read a blog that said it's not enforced at the marine corp marathon. Should I bring my ipod? Do you run with music?

I never run with music mainly because I can't get headphones to stay in my mini ears.

Should I bring my race belt to hold water/gel/chapstick and anything else I need?

I did a 20 mile race with a race belt and found it really annoying because it kept moving. I wouldn't have needed to hold water because there were enough stations. Though a belt that could hold some gels/vaseline for underarm chafing would have been awesome.

How do I pick a good goal time? My longest run has been 20 miles thus far - should I use my average pace on that run to predict my marathon time?

I used this basing it on a training run before I did my half marathon and it was quite accurate: http://www.liebreich.com/LDC/HTML/Various/Run Calculator.html ; - not so accurate from the marathon cos my training went to pot.

Do you talk to people while you’re running?

Briefly maybe but not really. Didn't stick with anyone. It would have been nice to have a running partner to chat a bit on long training runs, and to encourage eachother in the race though.

What do you do after the race? Did you go straight home and take an ice bath? Did you just stretch? Did you get a massage?

Rummaged through my goodie bag, found an apple, munched that, downed a bottle of water, ate a bag of jellie babies, then wandered around like a lost puppy looking for my parents at the overcrowded finish. Stretched a bit. Then walked for what seemed like an age (and included steps - STEPS!) to a tube station to go back to our hotel then drive home. Took some photos on the way back, changed out of those grim clothes, and brushed my hair :)

Ran a very slow mile the next day, got a sports massage the day after that. And went straight back into training at my normal schedule (albeit slower and lower intensity), and did my first triathlon a week later.

Fitness shin splints...argh! Sep 08 2009

Have you just started running? It's best not to up your mileage intensity too quickly. A general rule is about 10% max a week so if you run three miles, three times a week this week, you could probably go to 3.3miles three times a week next week, or 3,3,4 or something. However annoying it is to hear though, the best thing for shin splints is rest.

Weight Loss Adding Sedentary Activities to Activity Log - cheating? Sep 08 2009

Original Post by mermaid3011:

Theoretically studying (which means your brain is active and needs more energy) is not included in the sedentary calorie amount.

I think it is included. The sedentary setting on here assumes you do sedentary activities, of which studying/reading/watching TV/eating/sleeping/washing are some. The sedentary count is not equal to actually being completely sedentary/in a coma. It factors in some activity!

I think it's already accounted for and so fine to add in if you want, but a waste of time ie. if you add in something that's quite sedentary the burn total won't just add an hours worth of calories to your day. It will divide what it already had by 24, take 1/24th away and add in what you did...which if it's similarly sedentary will be the same and therefore give you the same/similar total burn.

That's great, and if you're still in highschool you're going to keep on improving. I have trouble pushing myself too. I finish a race and think 'hmm, ok, let's have a sit down'. Then I see people coming over the line (I'm talking triathlons so waves at the start and the people coming over the line after me might actually be faster) with cut lips and snot everywhere looking really rough, then keeling over/puking, and I think 'wow, I really need to try harder!'

That all sounds fantastic wildizer. I used to have much more of a routine when I was a member of a gym with classes like that. I'd go to pretty much everything I could fit in so several spin/pump/combat classes a week and actually did some weight training. Now I do triathlon and it's more self motivated with no timetables for classes etc. and it feels like such a faff to go to a gym and do the weights! Need to get the motivation and a a proper routine back.

I started running last March and did my first race (a half marathon in October). I have my 3rd triathlon on Sunday.

So in one year I will have done:

2 x 10k
Half marathon in 1:45.34
20 mile race
Marathon
2 run-bike-run duathlons
3 sprint triathlons

I'm so proud and I'm doing that same half marathon again this October to start next year in the same vein. These are definitely non-scale brags because I was so obsessed and upset about weight before but once I had something to train FOR (the marathon) instead of just training to lose weight, I stopped worrying and I was happier. But I've put on weight and started worrying again. I also got shin splints and so my marathon time and recent training haven't gone to plan. If I can do just as many races this year and really get back in to training at the same time as looking at my diet as I did before then that would be good ie. I did a year of eating well and losing weight, a year of training hard and gaining weight. Now I want to eat well and train hard!

The weight isn't printed on the front. Well I dont know, it might be but it seems the volume is in litres rather than the weight. She probably has a full container and wants to know the weight of the empty container so she can subtract the latter from the former. I've seen icecream before that has total contents in litres but nutritional info per 100grams or something.

It's too much work to add in all the little moments of exercising (like walking around the mall for 10 minutes, walking from my apartment to the garbage compactor and back up the 3 flights of stairs, etc) However, at work, I will be trying to keep a rough guesstimation of time spent walking or playing with the kids (also looking into getting a pedometer)

If this was in reply to what I said, I didn't mean you should add in all these things. I meant that you burn calories when you don't consider yourself to be exercising. You burn calories just being alive and doing nothing. Someone of  220lbs would burn way more than 370 calories just through being alive. The rule of thumb is a 5'0", 100lb woman would burn on average 1200 calories a day without doing anything.

My exercise consisted of :

EA Sports Active : -155 calories
Swimming : -345
EASA round 2 since I was bored : -200

This left me at about 370 calories that I hadn't burned off.... >.>

You don't just burn calories through exercise. You certainly  burned off those 370 and more. This is how you lose weight (by burning more calories than you eat). So if you burn 500 calories a day more than you consume then you would lose about a pound a week.

I would estimate that someone of your weight would burn around 2000 calories a day without any exercise and so with your exercise you probably burned at least 2500. With a consumption of around 1000 a day that puts you at a deficit of approximately 1500 calories a day or 3lbs weight loss a week. This is usually considered an unhealthily fast rate of weight loss.

To up your calories and still be healthy I would agree with the nut butter suggestion, maybe add a banana to breakfast, have some sauce or dip with dinner, honey with the yoghurt for your evening snack...
