Maintaining Making the transition to intuitive eating... Dec 02 2009
22:00 (UTC)

I think sdluck hit the nail on the head. What I see repeating in accounts from successful intuitive eaters is that you have to remember that intuitive doesn't mean eating whatever pops into your head.

I don't know about you, but my hunger wants chips and cookies and pie (just to name a few). My brain has to insist that a small meal is enough. It's not counting calories, but it is still a huge mind over excessive snacking lifestyle.

I like the scale idea. Is the fullness part measured after each meal? I think that's a good idea, but I have to wait about 20 miniutes for the full feeling to kick in. Usually if I still feel hungry after a meal I giveit 20 minutes. If I still feel hungry then it's probably legit. (Like the bagle story above).

Good luck.

Here's a question I've always wanted to ask an honest-to-g*d recruiter:

Is there a way to call and ask about the status of the search without sounding like you're a desperate crazy person?

It doesn't sound desperate or crazy at all! In fact I would encourage candidates to do this more often. You wouldn't believe how many managers say something like "oh yeah, her. I forgot about her. Get her back in here"

I would simply say "Hi, we met last week and I just wanted to follow up. I'm still very interested in the position and wanted to check on the status of my application"

see? easy and non-crazy

The first time, maybe, but what about the second?

I was told the job hiring process was drawn out at this company, but I'm at three weeks after my second interview, and I' going bonkers.

I did use your suggested sentence, though. I had to say something. Hopefully short and sweet will do.

Like cellophane_star said, all yogurt has helpful bacteria. If you want to try Activia, you should, but remeber, you can get similar benefits from cheaper brands that are just regular yougurt.

If you want to keep an eye on sweeteners either sugar or artificial stuff, I recommend a brand called Cascade Fresh (their located in Washington, I think.) I buy them at Whole Foods, but I'm sure they're carried other places.  They have the best score when it comes to the number of "real food" ingredients. I have also noticed digestive benefits--enought to limit myself to only 4 per week. ;)

OMG, I'm exactly the same 137 for over a decade.

I have noticed that I slim down a bit when I exercize regularly and intensely, but other than that ...

The good part is, though that I can still wear things I bought in highschool.

It doesn't have to go that far. The string end will only be a few inches in. This may be a little weird, but if you put your finger in and feel around you can feel the mucles that hold it in--they will feel like a tight ring around your finger near the front. The tampon just needs to be that far in.

If you were trying to puch it too far, that might be what hurts.

Then just tuck the rest of the string up so it doesn't get caught in between you aanf ouyr suit leg band.

Adding in rest days can help, too. once or twice a month 3 or 4 days in a row without going to the gym. (Or at least with very very light exercise, like a leasurely walk).

This should only amount to one or two skipped sessions. Also, while you are resting, eat close to what you would eat regularly - as if you had exercized.

It sounds counter intuitive, but allowing your body to rest, heal. and re-fuel will make all your sessions more efficient. You shouldn't have any decreases in your rate of weight loss overall.

The guy I know is at the other end. He recently lost quite a bit of weight (around 80-90lbs over few years). Now he exercises twice a day and the only thing I see him put into his body is water and Rockstar energy drinks. We're at work 9 hours a day and I'm not sure he ever takes a lunch. There used to be the occasional protein drink, but those stopped a while back.

This one is more scary sad than gross, but still the most unhealthy I know of.

I had a neighbor who got pregnant with her second within 6 months of the first birth, and it caused problems. Her body wasn't ready. The second was born very premature.

I think bodies need time to heal, and then more time to get ready to carry again. Maybe a year total?

By the way, didn't you just have one just the other day?

The Lounge Where have you gotten a bra fitting? Aug 27 2008

If you have a cloth tape measure you can do it yourself:

Step 1: measure at the point just below your breasts (where the band goes).

Step 2: measure at the fullest point of your breasts.

Your band size is the # of inches around your chest plus 5.

Your cup size is the #of inches at your fullest point minus the # of inches below your breast.

A = 1 inch difference between the fullest point and the chest below

B = 2 inches

C = 3 inches

D = 4 inches

and so on.

So, if you measure just below your chest and get 31 inches your band size is 36. Then, if you measure at your fullest point and get 34 inches, your cup size is C (34-31=3)

You are therfore a 36C.

Bravo.

I ditto what carolann said. I'm also a 32DD (It's not as obscene as it sounds, but I can't wear just any old tank top.)

I also recommend trying on the band and cup sizes that are one-up and one-down from what you usually wear whenever you buy a bra. There is enough variation from one brand to the next, and from one style to the next that you might find a better fit. Just like jeans.

Original Post by melkor:

I haven't heard any guidelines from the other corners on the triangle, but I suspect that it's similar - more than 90 minutes of heavy lifting will probably interfere with a goal of gaining endurance or speed because your body is going to have to work hard to repair the 'damage' strength training causes.

Generally endurance training is a pattern of short- high endurance effort. For example, a runner might use short all-out sprints up hill in combination with longer low- medium runs. The point is to raise your lactic acid threshold. (If you can prolong the point at which you feel tired, you can go longer at a higher output).

I'm guessing that the links above will have some variation of this. I can also recommend a good book on endurance training specifically for rock climbing.

I think the controversy here lies in the many interpretations of what it means to be stronger.

I have no intention to be a body builder. Getting stronger would probably be helpful for cycling, climbing, and other fun activities.

What I'd like to do is spend time in the rainy season focusing on indoor work on strength and speed. It sounds like non-intense bicycling for daily life activities wouldn't be a problem for these goals.

(this rainy season I'll be working on some more fat loss, hopefully other winters on strength without fat loss).

This isn't strength like what Mekor is touting, this is endurance.

It sounds like you want to feel "strong" after an hour of cycling, or on your fourth route. Both situations require endurance.

The strength associated with this rule is purely lifting heavy things.

Dr. scales always say I weigh more because I'm dressed and usually it's later in the day. If she wasn't wearing the same thing, that will change her weight. A pair of jeans + lunch + water could add up quickly.

Why was she at the DR? If she has been sick, maybe the lower weight was due to not eating well for a few days, then once her appetite came back she moved closer to her normal weight.

At 11 she probably has more to grow, so skinnyogi has a good point, too.

I bet you could rig up something to keep the rocks out. Like a bandanna around each ankle, or a sock with the foot part cut off that can be pulled down over the top of your shoe.

There's always duct tape- it does hold the world together, I hear.

Try buying your next bra a band size smaller than you think you need (a tape measure is essential here- band size = #inches plus 5).

One brand of sports bras that has an adjustable band is moving comfort. I personally love them.

Weight Loss Question to make sure.? Aug 20 2008
18:31 (UTC)

carolally brings up a good point - adding muscle will help with both your problems. It you work on adding muscle (this works better with a calorie surplus, by the way). You are likely to add pounds, but shrink in inches.

You'd get to your size 7 and have a nice firm body to boot.

It might be a little odd to see the scale go up, though, so it might be easier to switch to a tape measure and stop weight yourself altogether.

I agree with ducklingerthank ^^^^

The number of calories you burn really depends on who you are, and your relation to the sport.

I'm a 13_? lb woman who is supporting a fair amount of muscle. That said, I burn less calories at an activity I do very frequently, and more at an activity I only do occasionally. Any activity that I burned even 750 calories an hour would put me to bed for a day since it would require so much effort.

A better question might be: "what are you training for?"

Fitness Regular exerciser but beginning a new workout, any suggestions? Aug 18 2008
17:59 (UTC)

I went through this too. I'm a regular exerciser, who has been mixing Yoga with weight training for about 8 months now, and my advise is to allow for flexibility in your routine (pun inevitable).

My Yoga instructor mixes up the poses from week to week. This means that some weeks we are working heavily on arm balances, other weeks more on back bends, etc. I find that I don't want to do a heavy work-out on the same muscle group that I just worked in class. So, you might find yourself switching your days a little to stay balanced. (I.e., leg weights after handstand classes)

Also, for me, the calorie tool here under estimated what I was burning in a single power yoga session at first. For the first few weeks of doing everything I had to eat way more. If I had it to do over, I would have started one week with one element (just weights, or just Yoga) and then added slowly. Starting anything new is taxing on your system, adding a lot of new effort, or shifting effort in new ways may have unexpected effects. Slow changes are easier to adjust to.

Now that I've been on this schedule for a few months, I'm eating less than I had to at first, and have been able to add in more weekend stuff like cycling and rock climbing without feeling like I need a few days to recover.

Good luck, keep us posted.

Fitness Toning Thighs-Excercise suggestion? Jul 31 2008

Ditto Jill, I'm sorry you're not getting more support.

Stronger legs are less "jiggly". Add weight to your squats and lunges (like 10-20lb in each hand). And try step-ups with weights, where you hold weights and "step up" onto a raised stair or bench.

Just remember, slow and controlled moves with weights.

Well, you can always stop eating. Eventually your body will turn to your muscles for energy.

Or,

You can take some time to pamper yourself and work on loving the body you have. Try looking for pictures of models with broad shoulders, or using sites like myshape.com to shop for clothes that flatter your shape. Or Google "narrow shoulders" and see how many people wish they looked more like you.

'sup to you.

Fitness How much protein do I actually need? Jul 25 2008

I agree with yountsmonster, especially since you are new to this. If you are only working with light weights, you really aren't increasing your need for protein too much. You are probably at the lower end of the scale trhawley just put up (.8 to 1.0 gram per Kilo).

If you were working at the level where you would really benefit from high volumes of protein, then you wouldn't be able to work out every day.
