| Weight Loss | Natural Fat Loss Basics - Whole Foods vs. Refined Foods | Aug 05 2009 17:01 (UTC) |
7 |
Sometimes the balance of intestinal microorganisms (fungi, yeast, bacteria, etc.) becomes imbalanced when one eats too many processed foods, because refined carbs don't have the same immune-boosting nutrients as raw/unprocessed fruits, veggies, and whole grains. Processed foods also contain high levels of sugar, which feeds the naturally occurring candida in one's gut, sometimes resulting in candidiasis. Antibiotics are often the cause of such intestinal imbalances, because they kill off the good microorganism colonies in your gut and give the unhealthy ones opportunity to flourish. For over a year now, I've been coming down with increasingly widespread and severe food allergies (recently, eating pretty much anything processed or containing flour/gluten, soy, or sugar caused me to feel itchy all over), and I've been tired, depressed, and been unable to concentrate at my previous levels. In spite of completely clear STI/HIV checks and re-checks, in the past four months, I've been diagnosed--by Western docs--with two conditions (shingles and lichen planus) which are closely tied to auto-immune disorders. Both these ailments had no Western medicine cure: the answer was to just "live through it" or take corticosteriods in the case of the latter. I've caught colds and flu bugs at a much higher rate this year than ever before, haven't been able to stay properly hydrated, and and have generally felt like my body is rebelling on me and *anything* I tried to do to fix it. Taking two courses of doctor-prescribed Flagyl within a month of one another only made these problems worse after the medication was completed. I finally went to a naturopath, who was the only doctor to suggest making drastic dietary changes (even though I ate pretty healthfully before, I'm now eliminating gluten, dairy, soy, and sugar) and put me on a natural anti-microbial, which helps kill off the microorganism overgrowth in my gut. After about 3 months of super clean eating, I'll rebuild new healthy bacteria colonies by taking probiotics and slowly expanding my diet. I've already noticed positive improvement after 2 weeks in being able to consume small amounts of 'restricted' foods (hey, everyone slips up once in a while) without the side effects I had before, and my general health and energy levels have improved dramatically after an initial (severe) die-off/detox reaction. Like OP said happens, my hair, nails, and skin are all in their best condition EVER, and my ailments have almost entirely disappeared. I've gone the long way around the barn in telling it, but my experience is just one example of how antibiotics are sometimes *not* the answer. Processed foods are treated with chemicals and radiated to ensure "food safety," but this eliminates many of the nutrients that made the original ingredients good for you in the first place. The best source of nutrients is from fresh, unprocessed foods, even better if they are locally produced and therefore spending less time decomposing in between garden and plate. Just because you haven't experienced these effects from antibiotics or processed foods, kisteel, does *not* mean they don't exist for the rest of us. |

Wouldn't you be too, if someone was photographing you totally nekkid for international publication? Poor birds. It does seem like the infections and breeding would be a bigger problem without feathers. I would say sun exposure would be an issue too, but somehow I doubt these birds ever see the light of day (except for the odd photo opp). |

GrassDress, you've hit a goldmine here! I just tried this and thought I wouldn't get through the first 10 minutes ... but I pushed myself through it and made it through the whole thing! Doing the hops instead of handstands in section 3 put my HR up to 161, and according to my Polar F11 HRM (love this thing) I burned 228 cals in a half-hour, about half of that in a "low intensity" HR zone and half in "moderate intensity". It was definately tough, even with a few of the modifications, but it was well-balanced and left me feeling stretched, relaxed, and strong. Bookmarked! |

Original Post by ningomes: I recently went on a diet very similar to the one described in your link, and it has left me with the softest skin I've ever had. It's also reduced inflammatory weight I've been carrying for quite some time (8 lbs in 2 weeks, and I've struggled with ANY weight loss for over four years), and helped me to actually feel energized from the foods I eat. It was a HUGE push to make it through the first week (one of my biggest problems was a systematic candida infection, which causes major detox symptoms when you stop consuming sugar, milk, gluten, soy ... anything that yeast likes to munch on. It's easier now because I realize that eating those foods (at least for now) will make me tired, cranky, and put me into a major brain fog. Good luck to all on your migrations away from KP! |

I use the Netflix on demand service - they have a few different yoga videos and it's ALWAYS available. You don't have to see the screen after you get the hang of each one, and so I can just queue up my computer and get to yoga-ing on the floor near my desk. I really like the Candlelight Yoga one - good basic stretches ... I use it right after running and never end up sore the next day. |

Original Post by james_64: I follow the same practical-reward motivation scheme, but like your addition of the movie/coffee restrictions, James! It's simple, fair-minded, and clear--all great characteristics in a potentially emotional effort. My current goal/reward schemes are as follows: 155 lb. (-5 from current, -20 total): get several pairs of pants altered to fit 145 lb. (-30 total): try indoor rock-climbing! 120-130 lb.* (-45 to 55 total, maintained for 6 months): Goal Weight! Spend a day at Title 9 Sports and give myself a rockin' active lifestyle wardrobe/makeover *I've never seen myself or anyone in my family at a smaller weight than 150, so I'm going to analyze my goal range once I'm closer to it and determine from there what my final goal weight will be |

Mine are "lady parts." The boyfriend giggles when I call it that, but it seems to work without making me completely lose my train of thought from my own giggleage. (Which happens when saying the girl c word, the more vulgar form of "kitty.") BF calls his parts the boy c word, i usually use the d word, though. |

I'm a Virtual Assistant. I do freelance administrative work on my own schedule. This includes doing scheduling for life coaches, bookkeeper/assistant to the director of a local farmer's market, creating and updating websites, data processing & desktop publishing, etc. I started doing this when I decided to go back to school for graphic design, which starts in September. My goal is to overlap school projects with client projects whenever possible, to give myself a bit more free time and (gasp) get paid to do homework! I thought I wanted to be a biologist/research scientist when I was younger, but realized I didn't want to be a lab rat my whole life. I've already gotten over being a corporate whore, so I'm hoping to work for myself (and employ others, potentially) in both virtual assistance and graphic design businesses. |

Not too sure where you are, but there's probably a farmer's market around. They often have much less expensive pricing and/or you can haggle with the farming vendors. When I moved back home, I walked up to the woman who runs our (independent but fully certified) Farmer's Market, and told her I wanted to volunteer for her at the market. It means that I get up every Saturday morning and walk across town to the market site, spend 2 hours setting up and tearing down tents, tables, etc., and 4-5 more hours running around the market making sure vendors get to go potty, are paying their weekly stall fees, etc. In return for my assistance, the vendors are so full of gratitude that I usually walk home loaded down with about $60+ of fresh, wonderful, usually organic veggies, fruit, berries, and breads ... free. Combined with the 1,000+ kcal burn I get from manual labor, this is the most rewarding part of my week, and I don't feel bad at all about making Sunday a true lazy day. Check for any nearby markets. Even if they don't need some help, I'm sure their pricing will help. Good luck! |

The best sports bra I've found is at TitleNine.com, a women's sport apparel store. It's the 3-Reasons Support Bra, and I've had mine for over 3 years now. It's made for C-DD cups, which is not an area I'm sure you're in, but it's my go-to for any activity that requires no jostling, bouncing, or movement of any sort from my DD friends. Even if you don't need something so ... substantial ... I'd recommend reading the reviews for other bras and running gear at Title Nine. They field-test and review every product they carry, and their stuff is CUTE too. Not cheap, but it'll stand the test of time. For instance: their Meg's Favorite Shoe ($95) is now MY favorite running shoe. In this case, it's one made by Asics and I got my pair at the Shoe Pavilion or something like that for $20 less and no shipping charges. The review is what sold me on it, though, and I'm just now getting ready for a new pair ... 2.5 years later. :) Good luck! |

i have & use the f11, LOOOOOOVE it. i can't remember if the f4 has the "goal" programs to set up goals for maintaining, improving, and maximizing fitness, but i use this on a regular basis. the nice thing is, each week that i meet my set goal, a trophy pops up on the hr monitor, which is encouraging for the next week of workouts. the only bummer about the f11 is that the heart rate monitor strap, while coded (good for gym workouts, so i hear) is a bit more bulky and obtrusive than the non-coded straps that come with the f6 (and with the f4, i'd assume). i've also used the f6, though, and from my experience, any polar hrm you buy is going to be well worth the money. |

i use vinegar in the wash to get rid of stinky smells. sprinkling baking soda in the wash and adding vinegar works especially well. try running a pretreat cycle on hot with vinegar (no detergent), then run the same cycle with detergent and it won't smell like a pickle after drying. :) good luck! i have the same program with my polar heart rate monitor strap. |

As many of my fellow Californians out there might already know, we have a bit of a smug attitude towards what we "need" and expect. I challenged my sense of superiority by moving to upstate New York (for several reasons that I won't go into here) for 1.5 years in November 2006. BAD timing. Rochester, NY was already a blue collar town before the economy started to drop off, but shortly after getting there, I saw that I had underestimated the challenge and was drowning in debt each month, in spite of my seemingly low $370 rent (including heat). I just moved back to California in May after practically suffocating financially, and decided the best way (only way?) to be a full-time college student in this economy is to live at home. I moved back in with my mom (a bit of a win-win since she now lives in a very progressive/green-minded community, with a house three blocks from beachside walking trails). That saves me $1000+/month in rent & utilities, but increases my mom's expenses. So, these are the ways our household is cutting down on costs:
Trying to be "green" and to conserve energy has always been a part of my personal culture, and it's much easier to do now that everyone else has become so conscious of it, and it's so "fashionable". We're about to start a compost bin, and I'm nearly there on getting my mom to plant a herb garden (those suckers are expensive!) and a bigger garden next year. |

how disappointing! :( i have a polar f11 too, and i actually can't get it to beep at all! (except, inexplicably, whenever i press the "ok" button). i know there's a way to change the upper/lower limits alarm in the settings (to off, low, or high, i think). i would, however, verify that there's no beepy-ness that will arise by doing a series of sprints/cool-downs and a few yoga poses in the comfort of your own home before bringing the dreaded/lovely thing back to yoga class. :)

You find it in the frozen food section, with the veg burgers, etc. I personally prefer the Morningstar Crumbles, it's the same thing but I think the Morningstar variety usually gets the "meat" texture and taste spot on. We eat it quite often as a substitute for meat in tacos, spaghetti, sloppy joes, etc. because my sister is veg and I'm on CC. My mom comes near swearing she's going veg too every time we eat it. Morningstar's Grillers Prime are the BEST no-meat hamburger patties we've ever had, I swear they're even better than most hamburger meat you get at the grocery store. Good luck, and let us know how those stuffed peppers come out! |

| Foods | whats your favorite kind of cake?! | Jan 12 2008 20:39 (UTC) |

My favorite cake EVER has to be a version of this Italian Cream Cake: my mom made it for a party when I was about 12 and I actually remembered it so lovingly that I searched for and found it nearly 10 years later to make for myself!! I make it with slivered almonds instead of pecans, though, and almond extract instead of butter extract. It is absolutely the richest, most sinfully amazing cake I've ever had, and it's LIGHTER than many, coming in at 300 kcal/slice (but keep in mind 1 slice = 1/20 of the 8" cake). It's a bit labor-intensive (I think I did it start to finish, including cooldown time) in about 3-4 hours). Oh, by the way, I don't bother with the whole kumquat and prettiness bother that they've got going on in the photo. i just frost it really well and cover it with a few leftover slivered almonds. |

Original Post by wildwildwes:Original Post by cellophane_star: a "rebleed" would be when the needle site starts to bleed again. as they're in a pretty active vein, it can be hard to stop the bleeding (this is why you have to hold gauze on the needle site for a while with your arm above you head when they finish the blood donation process, and also why they wrap it with a compression bandage for the entire day after giving blood. |

| Weight Loss | I'm donating blood- how much should I eat? | Jan 11 2008 19:25 (UTC) |

it's most important to make sure to drink a LOT of fluids (water, juices, etc. but non-carbonated and non-caffeinated) before going to give blood. i've been told drinking a gallon of water in the 24 hours preceding blood donation is very reasonable. drinking just as much water in the 24 hours AFTER giving blood is also important, in order to replenish the lost fluids. eating before a blood donation is important too, but you should be just fine eating your planned daily calories. i would aim for a smaller calorie defecit (say, 500 kcal as opposed to 1000 kcal) and make sure to stay away from alcohol (even a single drink can increase your blood alcohol content way more than normal, since, after all, you'll have less blood in you). also, take the day off from exercise. lifting weights, doing cardio, or even running up a set of stairs too quickly can exhaust you and even cause dizziness, which is not nearly as much fun as just spinning around in an office chair makes it seem. good luck today! it's very important for more of us to get out there and donate blood on a regular basis; i hope you keep the practice up! |

ok, so i adore Ellen DeGeneres even though she's a bit weird at times. And she has this Emmy song: "I don't need an emmy in my life to make me happy, i'm already happy without an emmeeeeeeeeeeeey!" and i heard about a girl who adapted it: i don't need a cookie in my life to make me happy-- i'm already happy without a cookiiiiiiiiiiiie! which i think is adorable and actually gets STUCK in my head. it also works to convince me that i'm not depressed but actually happy ... two birds, one stone! |
