| Weight Loss | to those who eat roughly 1600 calories a day... | May 06 2009 17:55 (UTC) |

If I'm doing it right (because I don't always have the stomach or time for it!), I have about 275 cals for my "first meal": 2 scrambled eggs (no milk, a tablespoon of water), 1 slice of light wheat bread tosted, and 8oz of light chocolate soy milk. Lots of protein to make me feel full and get me to my mid morning snack which is about 100-200 calories. Then I'll have yogurt and/or some fruits and veggies. |

Okay, I'm here to do a dance!!!! Just like NJ, I was discouraged and found the weight creeping back up at the beginning of this moth. I was sticking with it because I knew I hadn't been working out enough or eating healthy and I needed to recommit. So today I checked: I'm down to 368.5!!! That's 6.5 pounds since I weighed myself earlier this week. It's a wonder why it seems to come off overnight, but I'll take it!
Thanks for the support everyone. If I can do it, you can too!

Thanks Marinehead. BTW, Semper Fi! (My dad is also a Marine) Do you think I should be eating closer to 2000 calories a day? I could probably easily adjust to that level, making my mini-meals larger and eating a bit more protein.
Thanks again!

Hi All! I just joined the group because I'm finally at a place where I'm comfortable weighing myself and really committed. But I have a question, as people trying to lose a rather significant amount of weight, what kind of calorie deficiencies are you going for? I know that this will change over time as I loose weight, but I wanted some input. I'm eating between 1500 and 1700 calories a day and my burn meter is between 3600 and 3900 calories a day, including what I'm burning at the gym. Thanks in advance for your thoughts! |

I definitely use wraps often. Currently its one 100 calorie wrap with smoked turkey and pastrami with deli mustard and dill pickle slices. I do a lot of soup too, I love making and eating soup! I kind of make up soups as I go, usually revolving around zucchini, squash, carrots, cabbage, chicken or even reduced fat kielbasa. The options are endless with soups, I encourage you experiment. Now that summer will be here soon, I LOVE mixing shredded chicken breast with fat free ranch dressing, garlic salt and black pepper, then filling a hollowed out tomato with the mixture. It is the perfect summer lunch, or dinner! It gets too hot to eat a big meal sometimes. Now that I think about it, it would be so cute to do that with cherry tomatos as a appetizer for summer parties and barbeques! |

Dubliner Irish Cheddar. I miss the cheese in Ireland so much. Although I was eating like 4 ounces of cheese a day when I was there. It was so easy to take a bus to the city center and visit Tescos....
Feta, Jarlsberg, and sharp provelone are the other faves. |

I am also a fan of frozen grapes! I like fruit in general, but I have to say my favorite is Gala Apples. I LOVE them.
As for veggies, I have lots of favorites: Asparagus (a little EVOO and Garlic, steamed or stirfried) Brussels sprouts (steamed with spray butter) Zucchini/ Squash (Any way, stir fry, mashed, in soup, in pasta...) Cucumber Cauliflower (raw or steamed) |

I'm a dairy freak. I would eat CHEESE forever, all kinds. Except for the processed stuff. I can't stand imitation cheese. Give me the full of milk and fat stuff! Pudding, custard, ice Cream as well. I also love pasta (with red sauce). I had to cut way, way down on those things. Ohh, you know what I cannot resist? Napoleons. The layers of cream between phyllo or pastry dough. Heaven. But those are hard to come by around here, so they are not really a concern but once or twice a year. And at that rate, I have one! |

| Weight Loss | Calorie counting while on vacation and studying abroad? | Jan 26 2009 22:00 (UTC) |

Hi there akcoldbliss!
I studied in Ireland when I was in college, and let me tell you, if you are an American as I am, you will be impressed with the quality of food you can find abroad. I ate much healthier in Ireland than I ever did, and now do in the States. I also found that I was on the go so much and so active that I lost weight because I was not only burning more calories, I was only eating when I was hungry and my body needed fuel. I would eat only one big meal a day and maybe 3 smaller meals or snacks. Breakfast would be something like whole grain toast or fiber cereal, lunch was my big meal and I would pretty much eat what I wanted, and then supper would be a salad or some fruit. I did eat out a good bit, but part of the fun of being a foreigner was that I was actively seeking out fun and funky places to try, so I found quiche at a cafe one day, sushi the next. My advice is to really focus on the experience because chances are, you will be able to maintain a healthy lifestyle without micromanaging your diet. Just remember to be active and look for creative ways to dine out so your not splurging on empty calories.
Have fun! |

I'm from the North-west suburbs of Pittsburgh. We have a name for those who live in the more urban areas and speak "Pittsburgh-ese"; we call them "yinzers". I personally never spoke Pittsburghese unless I'm making fun of someone. (only in jest though)
I just love when they make the news, though I'm sure the world thinks everyone in Pittsburgh has some speech impediment. But technically the accent is just mixture of many European accents and most likely originated in the steel mills. As for the funny words like Jumbo for bologna and red up, I have no clue what the etymology is. |

| Weight Loss | Questions for the Bingers | Jun 23 2008 20:46 (UTC) |

First of all, major, major kudos to you for wanting to help your friend and being as supportive and honest with her as she deserves. You are a great person and a fantastic friend for that! Your friend sounds very much like myself. Binging and disordered eating is a really hard thing to come to terms with, and knowing that she's been caught in the act by you may make it even harder when you try to help. Not to excuse her behavior at all, but there are probably many factors and other issues or problems involved that you may not know about. She doesn't need or want the first two questions you posed to be addressed. She knows already. I know, I know; it seems counter intuitive that she keeps pushing you away when she should feel safe knowing that you know. And she should want to spill her guts to you, but its likely that she's super embarrassed by her habits, and the fact that they've been found out. So because she's still in denial, she'd much rather forget what she ate, forget that you know, forget all that stuff.
Its a tricky line to walk, being supportive without her taking it the wrong way. Especially since she's likely to be ultra-sensitive when it comes to diet and exercise issues. I would encourage her to try all sorts of new (active) things so she can find something she likes and to get her moving. My one favorite exercise is swimming. I'm sure there is something out there for her too, that will inspire her.

Has anyone tried doing like a self aversion therapy? For example, every time you are hungry or reach for a "bad" food, you think of something horrible?

I LOVE this show! I'm not a Mady fan at all. I think she may be bi-polar or something. She is normally a good child, but the sudden regression and meltdowns indicate that there may be a behavioral issue. I don't have any children though, so this may be normal for an elementary school kid!
All in all, the kids are just adorable, and 99% of the time from what is shown, they treat each other so well and have a wonderful bond with each other. Its lovely to see. |

Original Post by lyri: This is what happens to me! I'll want spicy and flavorful foods like Asian or Mediterranean. And it doesn't matter if things "match". I will mix and match with my food. But before my TOM, I do lose my appetite. Sometimes for the whole week or 2 weeks before my TOM. I just feel so BLAH! and can't bear the thought of eating. |

Hi Girls! I know its been a while and thank you so much for those who sent me messages, it really meant the world to me! I'm back after a hiatus and I just want to let you all know that my first dr's appointment in years is going to be in a few weeks. I'm finally going to put up with the embarrassment and horror of seeing the doctor so that I can get to the bottom line of my weightloss journey.

I held off on buying the book because I knew it would be the recipes on their site. I love, love, love the site, but I don't follow the recipes exactly. Its probably because I've developed my own approach to cooking; but I'll take one or two recipes (from anywhere, not just HG) and tweak them to my own tastes. Don't like carrots in my lasagna, so I leave 'em out. I can't find or don't like a lot of stuff, so I just make it the best I can and adjust my nutritional info.

These are good, especially on days when I have a bunch of calories left towards the end of the day and I'm afraid of eating something unhealthy or not being able to control my portion size. Now I'm obsessed with them: 1 plain no salt rice cake (35 cals) 1 all natural "butter"; I like cashew or almond (about 90 cals) 1-2 tlbs of marshmallow fluff (20-40) cals Its so filling! I know there's a ton of sugar in the fluff, but for a little more than 150 calories I feel like I'm eating something scrumptious from the bakery; and at the same time I'm getting a really good source of protein. Sometimes I add fruit like strawberry, banana or apple slices. Raisins are good too. My roommate likes to forgo the fluff and add a tablespoon of dark chocolate chips instead.
ooo I want one now! |

Sorry I know I'm answering the question late, I'm just now getting back to normal after being sick!
I don't think I've ever felt like a skinny girl in a fat girl's body. I've always been fat and felt fat and I don't know what it feels like to be anything different. I suppose there is a skinny girl inside of me because its what I want more than anything in the world and I don't see myself achieving my goals as a fat girl. But I just don't know what it would feel like to be skinny, to not worry if people are staring, or feel uncomfortable on a plane, or ignore my love life because I know no one's interested. I guess somewhere along the way I tried to forget that certain things are important and concentrated on things I did have or could have. I think I lost my skinny girl and so its even harder to motivate myself and really believe I could be thin.
I know that seems really sad and I'm not looking for attention by it or anything like that, just being honest and facing it is the first step to fighting it, right? So I guess my new mini goal is to find my inner skinny girl and wake her up! |

I had a bad weekend too, but now I have a stomach bug and can barely eat anything, so I guess this makes up for it. I wanted to so badly to go to the store and buy healthy food but now the thought of it makes nauseous. I was trying to get in at the Dr's since this has been going on since Sunday, but no dice. I was hoping to get weighed there and ask a few diet questions even if they couldn't give me medicine!

My mini goal is to buy new clothes! My clothes now will work maybe for a bit longer, but once I get down a few more sizes it will be undeniable that i'll need so new stuff and I can't wait for that. Once I get down below 300, I want to take a trip back to Ireland, so that's already tentatively scheduled for next summer. I hope to way surpass that goal by then, but I figure with money and weight holding me back, a year is enough time. At goal weight, I should have graduated from grad school and saved enough money to remove excess skin and hopefully move somewhere fabulous! |

I'm on board too! I don't know my cw but I definitely need to loose more than 100 pounds. I shoot for around 1500 calories a day and my limit is 1800. I recently added push ups, 5 reps of 10 a day, to my routine because I'm a horrible exerciser and I hate my arms more than anything! Hoping to add more exercise soon! My gw is 140 and I'm 5'7"
Let's get to work! |

| Health & Support | How has learning about nutrition changed how you plan to raise kids? | Apr 28 2008 20:18 (UTC) |
1 |
I definitely do not want my future children to develop the same problems I have. But I think the best way to do that is not to deny them certain things (God forbid they take a page from their mama's book and hide food in their rooms), but give them a choice. Everyone talks about giving kids choices from child psychology specialists, to teachers, to other parents, so I figure nutrition should be the same. For example: If my child says "I want a snack, please." I will say, "Alright. You may have these apple slices, or this pear". Occasionally, I will let them choose between the fruits and veggies or a small chocolate. Not only will they be given the freedom to choose and develop their taste buds, they learn a bit about portion control. If they are truly hungry, they'd want a whole apple more than one chocolate; and they learn that chocolate(or whatever) is okay, but it is a "sometimes" food, because I won't always let it be one of their choices. I also want to expose my kids to ethnic foods and healthy alternatives like tofu. My parents were very "meat and potatoes" people and to this day can't believe where I get my adventerous taste buds. Its been really hard for them to eat healthy, which they have to do now for medical reasons. So, I'm officially breaking the cycle and hopefully my kids will have a normal relationship with food! |

This is your family we are talking about right? I understand not wanting to hurt your mom's feelings, and trust me, many moms out there would love to know how considerate their children are. But more than that, they want their kids to be healthy and happy. So don't be afraid to let her in on your concerns for eating healthy. Start off slowly by being around your mom as she cooks. Look at what you are eating and read the labels. How does she prepare things? Broil, steam, bake, grill, etc. Are there enough veggies? Lean Meats? When serving yourself are you taking the proper portions? After a while you'll learn not only what you're taking in during an average meal, you'll learn a bit about cooking too! I see recipies and cooking as ideas and equations, not strict formulas that require special talents. Cooking doesn't have to be scary. Start thinking about meals you've seen your mom cook and how you might be able to make them healthier. It could be as easy as swapping a couple ingredients for their lower cal twin. Or you could take those awesome tacos and make a taco salad, or those bugers and make turkey burgers. Take the lasagna or the chicken parm and use eggplant and portabellas instead. The possibilities are endless and tasty! Here's an example for my personal favorite, turkey burgers: Take one pound of low fat ground turkey and put it in a bowl add generous amounts of rosemary, garlic and basil, mix together till the herbs are evenly distributed throughout make 4 patties and put them on the grill (i use the george foreman) and grill about 10 minutes or till they are the desireed doneness. I love ground turkey not only for its healthy stats, but the milder flavor is perfect for seasoning and lack of fat makes it less gristle-y and more tasty. I love it more the beef and use it for every instance one would normally use beef for. And you can use any herbs and spices you like, I love experimenting with herbs like dill, edit{apparently one of my favorite spices, a smokey disambiguation of curry and chilli can mistaken for a bad word, sorry}, celery seed, etc. Dill goes great with fish like salmon. My family started eating a lot healthier after my dad had a health scare, and I know a lot of families in similar situations. They may welcome a change and then its not all about you wanting to be "different" or "difficult". It could end up being awesome! |
