Health & Support leg cramps while sleeping--anybody knows of preventive measures/cures? Oct 25 2008

Original Post by amelia75a:

you can drink a little club soda right before bed.  It usually helps.

My Mom was having problems with leg cramps at night, and her doctor suggested she drink not club soda, but tonic water.  The quinine in tonic water apparently can be helpful.  It seems there can be problems with this if you have sensitivity to quinine, but that's fairly rare.

Weight Loss Hulk Hogan May 31 2008

Original Post by floggingsully:

Unless you start eating a WHOLE LOT more food (and add in some serious steroids) you won't come close to looking like Hulk Hogan.  People spend years and years trying to add muscle so it's not like it'll just sneak up on you.

If you want to lose fat without gaining muscle you need to lift heavy weights while maintaining a calorie deficit.

mmm...when I took a weight training class, I was told that to burn fat without gaining a lot of muscle I should lift light weights and do more reps; heavier weights do more to build.

Another option that would help you gain a few pounds and still not look fat would be to do some light to moderate weight or resistance training.  Nothing major--I have a set of resistance bands/tubes that I can use at home or anywhere I go, and depending on how diligent you are, they can give a real workout.  You'll gain muscle weight, still look trim and toned, and be stronger.

Here's a link for the tube set.  Less than $20 at Walmart--http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?pro duct_id=4329710

Sometimes I'm pretty sure religion controls our government as much as our government controls religion.   For a nation that's called a melting pot and prides itself on diversity, our governement seems to be very Christian-oriented.  I'm not putting down Christianity; I just think our government doesn't give equal time to other religions.  My schools were always closed for Christmas, but I don't ever remember days off for Chanukah, or Ramadan.  If there's supposed to be separation of church and state, it seems all churches should be equally separated from government...just my opinion; not trying to push it on anyone, or insisting that I'm right.

Weight Loss Do you add work into your Burn Meter? May 17 2008

I work ten hour days helping people with mental illnesses get done the day-to-day things they need to do to stay stable and in their own homes.  I drive a lot; sometimes as much as 3 hours a day.  I always count this, because it's 161 calories an hour, so I want credit for it.  That way I can justify that ice cream in the evening!  Seriously, though, I count it, and I lose fairly steadily, so it works for me, at least.  I think there should be a calorie allowance for job stress!  It may not be calories, but it definitely takes something out of us Tongue out.

Maintaining Overeating Problem - Food panic May 11 2008

NIghts after work are absolutely the WORST for me.  I work as a mental health supports counselor, and that's when I want to eat away all the stress of the day.  It's not necessarily that I go for foods that are bad for me, but I eat way more than I need.  I had done really well before the holidays, then gained back about 6 pounds.  It's been really hard for me to get back into eating well and controlling portions, especially at night, but I think I'm finally getting there.  One of the things that's helped me is to find something that I can let myself eat as much of as I want--I don't limit myself on raw veggies or cooked greens...grapes are good, too, because they're only about 2 calories each.  Strawberries are another good choice (for me).  I can pretty much eat as much of these things as I want, and the calories are still going to be minimal, plus I'm adding valuable nutrients.

from what I understand, the more muscle mass, the more you increase your metabolism, and the more calories you burn, so maybe you just have to reach a break-over point where you've gained enough muscle to help burn the fat...

you might try baking just the tortillas for 3-4 minute before you fill them...not long enough to make them crispy so they break when you try to roll them; just enough so they're not so soft when you put your filling and sauce on.

Health & Support Nutrition question May 04 2008
18:27 (UTC)

After I donated blood last year, my iron count dropped considerably and my doctor put me on pretty potent iron supplements, 3x a day.  I was told to drink orange juice with it, but because of the calories, I didn't want to drink orange juice 3 times each day.  I take a vitamin C tablet with my iron supplement, which my dr. said was fine.  I think gi-jane is right; it's not really so precise.  It's just good to have some source of vitamin C with your iron sources to aid your body's ability to absorb the iron.  Lemonade is one of my favorites!

Night time is the worst for me.  I get in from work and I'm tired, and I don't want to fix anything elaborate; I just want to reach for what's fast and easy.  Usually if I just have a sandwich on double fiber bread (50 cal. per slice) and then some cut up fruit later in the evening, I'm okay.  Another fairly low-cal snack/mini-meal I have sometimes at night is 1/2 c. lowfat vanilla yogurt with 1/2 c. fiber one--160 calories, and it curbs my craving for something sweet.  The salty thing is a whole other issue--I love salty foods, but it seems most of the ones I really like also have a lot of fat.   Cu

Have you tried looking up microwave recipes?  I used to cook whole chickens in the microwave, and they came out really well.  I'm sure there are lots of websites out there with good recipes.

As for the microwave veggies, a lot of them are seasoned, and are really good straight from the microwave.

Another inexpensive option would be a crockpot or other slow-cooker--great for meats, soups, even baked potatoes (although I can't say I've tried that myself, I have a friend who swears by it).  That way, you can clean it up after you use it and store it in your room so no one else mucks it up.  You can get a decent one for around $20-$25 at any discount store, like Walmart, Kmart, or Target.

Weight Loss This is a Great Plan... but it seems that many of you are not eating enough Jan 28 2008

Hi travelguy,

Welcome to the program.  I can understand why it seems a lot of people are eating way too little, compared to what you're (successfully) doing.  A lot of people here really don't eat as much as they should, but the other thing to keep in mind is that each person's metabolic rate is different, and based on one's  starting weight and activity level, the calories needed to lose weight will differ accordingly.  You mentioned you did Weight Watchers--they do the same thing; as you lose weight, you are allowed fewer calories per day, because as you lose  you're supporting less weight and burning less calories just being alive.  So, someone starting at a lower weight (and following this program correctly) will need fewer calories to maintain, and even fewer to lose, than someone starting at a higher weight.

My boyfriend, who's 5'11", about 150 lbs. has no interest in food, and takes meds (for arthritis and ADD) that further suppress his appetite.  We were talking about my weight once and I said "yeah, but unlike you, I get hungry".  His reply was "you could ignore it"...Grrrrr....

Mine is 175 by New Year's...that means 8 lbs...don't know if it's realistic (at least if I pursue it healthfully), but it could happen.  If it does, that will put me at the half-way mark on my way to 150, and be the first time I've weighed that in ... well, awhile.  Good luck with your goal-- won't it feel great to start the New Year with one more goal already accomplished?Smile

When my Mom was first diagnosed as diabetic, her doctor put her on an 800 calorie diet, and the weight really came off fast. I didn't know enough then to worry; now I would. She only weighed around 160-something to start with, although she's only about 5' tall...

However, with your brother being young, and maybe not eating as healthily as he should have (of course I don't know this), I'd say getting his blood sugar stabilized and his being more aware of what he's eating (maybe reducing sodium) he's probably mostly losing water weight--I didn't realize this until I attended a lecture on GI issues at a conference a few years ago, but sugar (or rather the way the body responds to it) can enable fluid retention, too. So, if his blood sugar has stabilized, then he's probably losing a lot of retained fluid.

Wow!  Congratulations!  I'm so glad to see posts like yours, not only because it makes me happy for you, but because it's really inspiring.  I started out with 49 pounds to lose (which really still puts me 10 over ideal, but since I have a lot of muscle, I think I can carry it okay), and that just seemed like so much...as of this morning I've lost 18 lbs., and it hasn't been bad at all.  Seeing posts like yours make me realize I can do this!!!

Thank you for the inspiration, and congrats again!  You'll have to post a photo of yourself in the evening dress on your birthday...Smile

mmmm...peanut butter...

I don't think your binge sounds too bad, in so far as what you had. I mean, if you're going to binge...fruit and veggies are the way to go, an that's most of what you had. So, you added 7 or 8 servings of healthy, anti-oxidant rich, immune-building foods. Good for you! OH! And some calcium for your bones...good!

As far as the calories go, with your age and exercise for the day, you're fine.

I don't know what the emotional reasons are for your binge, but at least you made mostly healthy choices. Those aren't going to hurt you.

Tempeh is a good protein source--made from fermented soy beans.  I really like it with vegetables like brocolli and eggplant.  I think the protein content per serving in higher than for Tofu, and it has a much firmer texture.

Also, TVP (texturized vegetable protein) is an inexpensive "crumble" or "ground meat" substitute.  I use it by itself in dishes or with ground meat to stretch the recipe, using less meat and more TVP.

Egg whites can be bought in cartons like coffee creamer, and have virutally no cholesterol and are a good protein source.

Health & Support For Women Only----IUD??? Nov 12 2007

I have the copper T -- no hormones-- type IUD, and I love it.  The first few months I had cramps when it was time for my period (not really bad, but I never had much in the way of cramps before that), and my periods were a lot heavier (but I'm also a lot older).  Other than that, I love it.  I've had it two years now, and no regrets at all.  The cramping and heavier periods were temporary effects, and well worth it for something I don't have to worry about remembering.  I definitely don't want any more kids (I'm 43 and my daughter is 22), but my insurance coverage for volutary sterilization surgery left something to be desired.  The copper one lasts 10 years, and if at any point you decide you want children, there's no hormone to work out of your system--theoretically, as soon as it's removed, you can conceive.

Oh, and you have it "installed" (LOL) while you're on your period because your cervix is already slightly dialated and it makes the process easier.

One thing I found out, though--it cost more to get it through my Dr.'s office than if I'd ordered it myself and had it sent there.  Through my Dr.'s office it was about $700; ordering it directly it would have been less than $500.  I talked to the accounting officer @ my doctor's office; she said that was their cost...I told her they should order through the website...I'm not sure she appreciated that.

1.  You're not ugly.  I just looked at your photos.  Actually, you're rather cute, with great features.

2.  A lot of  high school boys tend to look at blond hair and boobies.  At least, this seems to be true here in America.

I had the same issues in jr. high and high school...my best friend was blond with a figure.  I was brunette, slim, but no waistline and no boobs.  I wasn't ugly, either, but I had guys I had crushes on call me to ask for her phone number...ugh.

HOWEVER...college was a whole other ballgame.  I got noticed; a lot.  So, my guess is just that your time hasn't yet come.  Look out next year!

Let's see...you're eating healthy, and several times a day, which is good for both your metabolism and your blood sugar...you get lots of decaf beverages, and you workout. So now you want to know how people feel about you using diet pills which you've already said seems unhealthy...I don't think you're going to get a lot of support with something that obviously seems like a bad idea.

Have you tried exercises specifically targeting your butt? I don't know about calf exercises (I'm sure they're out there), but there are lots that tone and firm the butt. Maybe it isn't so much that you need to lose weight (since you're already at a healthy weight and wanting to move to one that's less healthy), but that you need to target those areas for toning. Just Google "butt firming exercises".
