Weight Loss Honest opinions needed. How much more to lose? (pics) Apr 27 2009
16:55 (UTC)

I have to say it is really nice to know that you guys seems to think that I can do this! It seriously makes me feel like I can be feeling good on the beach this summer!  It may seem crazy but even after all the success I've had, I doubt myself constantly so thanks so much for the boost. I think it's just what I needed!

So far, I've been able to add 2 strength training classes to my weekly schedule and I'm looking to add at least one more. My knee is healing so I should be able to add back my 3-4 weekly runs this week. I'm going to focus on short runs with speed intervals and I'm already ditching the processed foods and adding in more protein.

Can't wait to see the changes! I'll be posting more pics as the weight comes off. Thanks again everyone!

I can totally see that in my middle. It's been really tough for me to get my belly under control. I thought that maybe it was because I've had two kids but I'm no longer willing to give myself an excuse. Getting real here.

A personal trainer at my husband's gym recommended that I keep my calories at 1300 cal and just try to replace some of the carbs I'm eating during the day with protein. So instead of just oatmeal in the morning, I'll add some protein to my breakfast and replace Fiber One bars with cottage cheese for my afternoon snacks. Totally doable. I will probably start shifting up to maintenance calories once I make it to 125. I'm getting my body fat tested in a bod pod next week so that should help me find a better way to gauge my progress. The scale has not really been my friend lately.

Thanks for your honesty! You guys are awesome!

Another question- I've been trying to stick to about 1300/calories a day. It's enough for me as long as I'm eating the right things. Should I stick to this or up my calories a bit since I'm upping my exercise? My current calorie intake doesn't really leave any space for extra protein. I was thinking of adding a protein shake after my workouts. That would be about 200 calories more. Any opinions?

Thanks so much for the honest opinions. I knew I'd find what I was looking for here!  I was thinking that I'd like to lose 5-10 more so I guess I was right on track. I want to look like I work out a lot. I want to look lean and toned so I'm ready to start making changes to my workout routine to get me there.

It's true that it's slow-going once you get within a certain range. I sometimes get really frustrated with the process because I'm not getting the immediate feedback on the scale like I was when I first started losing weight. And there are definiitely days when I feel like I'm doing "all this work for nothing" and then I have a couple cookies to make me feel better. That doesn't help things.

So, I think I'll set my goal to get to 125 and then re-evaluate once I'm there. That's great advice.

(By the way, I went to a pump class this morning and I'm feeling stronger already!)

Thanks. It's been a long road. Just don't feel I'm quite done yet. I agree that I need to tone up. I've recently added more strength training to my workout routines.

I've been feeling the same way lately. I'm 5'5" 130 lbs and have a small frame. I desperately want to lose 10 more lbs but my body seems to be holding onto it. Every time I get into the 120s I think I'll stay there but I always pop back up to 130!

That being said, I do believe that it's possible to reach your goal. It's just going to take a little extra work and a little more discipline. That's what I'm trying! Oh, and I've started adding more strength training to my week and I'm beginning to firm up a bit more.

Good luck in your journey! You can do it! (By the way, you do look great!)

You are right. It does account for elevation changes. That's gotta be why it averages higher calorie burns. I love my Garmin!

Garmin says that I went an average of 11 mph. So I went to that site you gave me and looked to see how many calories I would've burned going 1 hr 9 min at an 11 mph pace and it said 413 calories. My Garmin, however, says that I burned 467 calories.

Maybe that is because the Garmin can actually account for changes in speed. My workout report says an average of 11 mph but it also says that I hit a max speed of 16.7 mph. I don't know. What do you think the difference could be?

Samgonzo- good idea but the IT band is keeping me from walking, too.

Bohdan- great site! I'm bookmarking that one for the future! I did take the road bike out and rode about 13 miles. Chalking today up as a loss day! Yay!

mperic81- I did! I did! :)

umneydurak- guess I was just thinking too much. I do that sometimes!

Thanks for all your replies. The ride was great even though I really need to get a new seat or some of those padded shorts. Oochie-ouch! My Garmin tells me that I burned 487 calories so it was well worth the effort. Tomorrow is a new day!

Thanks everyone! It's nice to know that there are people out there that "get it."  And a couple of you made some really good points about spite only taking you so far. That's true but I'm not really worried because I can think of a hundred reasons to lose weight besides spite. One being that I'm a runner and I know that the extra weight has affected my conditioning and will affect my time if I'm not careful. Also, I feel way more comfortable in my clothes at a lower weight. My back-up motivation is set.

If she ever asks me again, I'm definitely going the "Why do you ask?" route. Just imagining what she would say is making me laugh.

Thanks again for all the support. I love these message boards. It's the only thing that gets me through sometimes... You guys rock!

Well, I didn't wake up as early as I thought I would this morning (late movie last night) so I ended up going out at about 8:45 am. It was HOT already but what was I to do? I really didn't feel like running on the treadmill for the 3rd time this week.  Man, was I pooped this morning! Ever feel more tired when you wake up then you did when you went to sleep the night before? I did this morning. So, I'm pretty impressed with myself for going for a run at all. Usually I have tennis lessons on Saturday mornings but it was cancelled so I had to get some exercise.

So, here's an odd question. Maybe you guys have some insight. Every once in a while I'll get chills while I'm running. Even when it's hot. Like today, I got chills twice. What's up with that?! It's so strange.

Manta- believe me, there is nothing heroic about it. rather stupid, really. :) And I for one do think it is really cool that you see kangaroos and wallabies on your runs. Australia is definitely one of my must-see-in-this-lifetime vacation spots. Your post reminded me of this song that me 6 yr old learned in kindergarten this year- "Laugh, Kookaburra, Laugh" Ever heard it? It's his favorite and he always sings the chorus at the top of his lungs.

Back to the topic at hand- I don't love running on the treadmill but I really need to increase my speed and it's always the best way for me. That being said, I just hopped off the treadmill a few minutes ago. My boys were still sleeping and I obviously can't leave the house to run so the treadmill was my only option this morning.  Feels good to get the day started off on the right foot. (And this time, I had both the tv and the mp3 player on!)

Olivia- so glad you had a great run this morning!

Wow! An alligator! That is crazy! I haven't seen anything too cool either. But I did get to run along the beach in California and for a chic who spends most of her time inland (in Utah) that was pretty awesome! I think I could've run forever that day.

Got in a run on the treadmill last night. I've only been running outside lately and my pace was suffering so I decided to do my usual 3.1 miles at a 6.5 speed. It was harder than it used to be so I'm thinking I need to run indoors for the next couple of weeks to get my pace back to where it needs to be.  Oh, and I ran without the tv or mp3 player and I have to say that is pretty brutal on the treadmill. All I did was stare at the wall for half an hour. Boring!

And Asics rock! I wear the Gel Landreth.

Health & Support Low Blood Pressure Solutions?? Jul 11 2008

A couple of years ago, I went to the doctor feeling lots of heart palpitations, lightheadedness, dizzy and disconnected. Come to find out, I've got low BP and now I have to take medication for it but only when it gets so low that it causes the palps and other symptoms.  My cardiologist also suggested a diet of steady small meals and LOTS of salt. He said to add salt to everything and cut out sugar. Completely. Or almost completely. It definitely helped get me through the bad spells. There were days I was so weak that I couldn't get out of bed!

Maybe you don't want to see the doctor but I would say if you have any concerns you should definitely check with a specialist.

Foods Views on fast food? Jul 09 2008

I saw the movie and I think that they should show it in every high school health class. I never really eat fast food so when I do I usually don't feel too guilty about it. There are almost always healthy options. Just check the websites for nutritional info. I've opted for the Asian salad sans almonds and dressing at McD's and it's only around 300 cal. Not bad. I believe what everyone else is saying- moderation is key.

Hey guys! Didn't run yesterday because of some major heart palpitations. It was seriously wearing me down. They are just a part of life for me and something I have to work with. The cardiologist just says to take it easy when they come. But it is so hard sometimes because I'm the type who as soon as I'm told not to do something, I REALLY want to do it! I've had them off and on for the last 2 years and I remember when the cardiologist first told me to ease off the running for a couple weeks or months- I really cried! Right there! That's when I knew that I was a true runner and I knew that I would run again. And I do! I could've given up and never run again but I was was patient with my body and now I run consistently and just listen to my body to know when to take it easy.  I'm feeling much better today and will probably be taking a sunset run tonight.

Cheers to all you runners! You rock!

1) I supinate, too. Not terribly and it hasn't affected my knees yet. But my shoes are always worn out on the outsides of my soles. Do you have high arches? My brother had to get prescription insoles because of his arches but it made a world of difference.

2) Been there, too. But thankfully while on the treadmill so I've hopped off gone to the potty and hopped back on. Haven't had the problem running outside yet. *Knock on wood.*

3) I am about there. I used to think, "Who are these people who can run without music?!" and during my last 5k my MP3 player battery went out after just 2 songs and surprisingly, I felt more focused.  It felt good to just think. But I still need the music more often than not. I suspect in the future I won't.

4) I live in, like, the most runningest county in the world, I think, and people are very respectful of runners. It's great. But it's always a good idea to have a Road ID on you, no matter where you are running.

5) My favorite new website is MapMyRun.com. It is awesome! Map out new runs and save them to your training log. It's all free! I'm working on improving my speed and I've started using the fartlek training. It's basically interval training, like run then sprint then run then sprint. It works and it really helps to break the boredom in the longer runs.

Great to see all the runners here! A support group would be great! Nice to meet you!

Weight Loss Who blew thier diet for the 4th? Jul 05 2008

I had a ton of calories. I didn't even bother logging them. (It would take TOO long!)  I had only eaten abt. 300 calories by the time dinner rolled around but at dinner I ate a turkey burger, turkey smoked sausage, french fries, 3 servings of cherry delight dessert and a ton of watermelon. It was a lot but I'm hoping that I still ended up breaking even because I ran 3 miles yesterday morning and played tennis for an hour and a half in the afternoon.

Back to the grind today!

I figure I went through a combined 27 hours of labor with my kids, I think I can take a tattoo, even if it is in a sensitive spot.  I mean, people who have tattoos, does it really hurt "that" bad?

As a mom to 2 myself, I can tell you that a tatoo is nothing like giving birth. You'd breeze through a tat, no matter where you put it!

I got:

Tuna & Salmon Sashimi (4 pieces each)

Edemame

Miso Soup

:)

Shockingly feel satisfied... I would have thought I'd be hungry - so used to having 2 large rolls!

I'm so jealous! Sushi is by far my favorite food and hubby and I only get it every couple of months. (It can be so expensive!)

Another great option at sushi places is the seaweed salad. It's SO yummy and really low in cals.

Weight Loss Did you have a treat or more than that this weekend? what did you eat? Jul 02 2008

Friday night my hubby and I went out to Outback. I indulged in some bread and butter and stayed sensible for dinner and ordered the grilled salmon and scallops.  BUT for dessert we went to a local chocolate shop and I got a chocolate dipped frozen banana that was smothered in chopped peanuts. YUM!

Saturday, I had a kids hamburger and french fry meal and then a huge scone with honey butter for dessert.

Ahhhh, weekends!

Fitness is 30 minutes enough? Jul 02 2008

I once had a personal trainer tell me that weight loss is 90% diet, 10% exercise and that has always stuck with me. Exercise all you want but you won't see real results until you keep careful track of what you are putting in your mouth. It is true for me. I have been a diligent runner for the past 2.5 yrs and, although the amount of exercise never changes (abt. 30 min/day, by the way), I don't see changes unless I'm keeping careful track of my calorie intake.

Just my 2 cents.

Fitness Spinning Classes and gym equipment overestimating calorie burn!!! Jul 02 2008
16:23 (UTC)

Yeah, you can never really trust the calorie readouts on gym equipment. My treadmill at home tells me that I burn over 500 cal. in a 30 minute run. I wish!! Realistically, I burn between 300-350.

Personally, I eat the same amount of calories whether I've exercised that day or not.  Then I don't have to worry about the validity of the "calories burned" numbers.

It could just be that you are tying your shoe too tight. When I got fitted for my running shoes the gal there told me to always buy shoes at least 1/2 to a whole size bigger than I would normally wear. She also showed me this cool way of lacing and tying them that keeps the shoelaces from causing possible injury.

Here are some suggestions for tying your laces on Runner's World.com. Hope that helps!
