Maintaining small frame, healthy weight...belly fat?? May 29 2008

Not supposed to post links, so here is my advice -- conduct a google search on the phrase "body type" and click the quiz from iVillage (probably the second link down).

The current idea on "trouble spots" (such as belly, hips, thighs, arms, whatever) is that your body is genetically predisposed to store fat in certain areas.  The quiz identifies your genetic "body type" and suggests exercises that will help you sculpt your way to more pleasing proportions.

For example, I tend to store fat in my lower regions, so the site recommended I build a more muscular upper body to balance it out.  I whined at first, but the  advice was right on -- even when I'm not at my "ideal" weight, I look fabulous.

However, your body is still your body, and there's only so much change that can be initiated by exercise.  That's where clothes come in! Find styles that emphasize your arms, face, boobs and legs, and that hide your tummy.

And, seriously, love yourself. Recognize that there is only so much that you can do (without plastic surgery) and don't beat yourself up because your body type isn't in fashion. After all, if we all looked the same than it would be much more difficult for our loved ones to recognize us. ;^)

Maintaining HELP!! I'm losing control after months of hard work. Dec 21 2007

Maybe when your knee is better you could alternate with something a little more low impact, like swimming or an elliptical trainer?

Hey pbb -- sometimes I feel the same way! I try to push through by finding new ways to exercise. Lately, I am X-country skiing. Things that also work for me are long scenic walks -- or walking uptown to go shopping, or just walking to work and back.

And once, when I was just too depressed to lift a finger, I slept for 12 hrs a day for a week, didn't work out, hardly walked anywhere, & lowered my calorie intake to 1200 -- which was pretty easy, since I didn't feel much like cooking ... or eating for that matter. & it didn't damage me too much when I snapped out of it the following week.

Why don't you slowly up your calories at a rate of 100 calories every two weeks?  If you gain a few pounds, you know how to lose them again.  It could take you months to figure out how many calories you need to eat to maintain on a long term basis.  That's just part of your weight loss journey -- figuring out what your body needs to maintain.

Weight Loss The Exception or the Rule? - Debate Dec 13 2007

Even though you are feeling stronger does not mean that you haven't lost muscle mass.  It just means that your muscles are becoming more efficient with use.  It's ok to lose muscle mass, as long as you feel healthy and are able to do the things that you want to be able to do.

I used to have a lot of trouble falling asleep sometimes, until i went to college.  For some reason, at that point in my life I began establishing a routine.  That's what a lot of people recommend -- build a routine that takes some time (mine takes about 20 min.), in order to prepare your mind and body for sleep.  It's also helpful if you go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning.  I wash my face, brush my teeth, comb my hair, floss, rinse, put on hand lotion and read a book IN THE EXACT SAME ORDER EVERY NIGHT.  Then, I lie on my back and think about my day for 5-20 minutes, and when I'm done thinking, I roll onto my side, and that's my signal that it's time to begin falling asleep.

Repeating the same actions night after night train your body to react in a certain way to these actions, just like how Pavlov trained his dog to drool @ the sound of a bell.  Now, even when there's crazy stuff going on in my life, it doesn't keep me up like it used to.

Also, if you have even the teensiest belief in anything, prayer can be very calming ... or can chant the AA mantra to yourself (give me the courage to change what I can, accept the things I can't, & ability to recognize the difference.) -- that is, if masturbation doesn't work.  ;)

As a 139 lb, 17 yr old male, @ 5'6" you have a BMI of 22.4, and @ 5'7" you have a BMI of 21.8.  Both BMIs are right smack dab in the middle of the healthy range.  Why are you trying to lose weight?  As you are recovering from an ED, why don't you just focus on a healthy lifestyle at your healthy weight?  Pump some iron & eat maintenance.

Edit to add:  The reason you're not losing is probably because you're already at a healthy weight & your metabolism is a little slowed from bulimia.  So, please, don't torture yourself.

If you want to try lowering the calories in your coffee in order to squeeze in breakfast, trying using nonfat powdered milk.  It has very few calories, and doesn't taste watered-down like skim milk because ... it's dehydrated.  Also, cinnamon is a great flavor for coffee that has few calories.  Also, you can add vanilla or almond extract, to cut down on calories from coffee mate.

Right.  If you exercise, eat most of it back.  Even though the site says you can have up to 1000 calorie deficit & be healthy, you may find it difficult to feel full on a 1000 calorie deficit & thus be more susceptible to binging.  For me, I find it is easier to maintain a 400 cal deficit than a 500 one -- so feel free to play around until you find what works for you.

The Lounge Odd question (Relationship and age Question) Dec 08 2007

Well, there's no way I could tell a story quite so frightening as Kat's.  Good luck to you and your daughter, hun.

However, I have two minor tales.

1.  The age issue.  I am currently seeing a man who is 6 years older than I am.  We get along great and enjoy doing many of the same things.  However, we are headed in completely different directions right now -- I'm off to grab the world by the tail, and he's ready to settle down.  Fortunately, we've communicated on this issue & it's not going to result in a hail of tears.

 2.  The highschool issue.  When I was in high school I dated a guy who was my same age, and we were so in love we stuck it out long distance for nearly two years in college.  When we were 17, it seemed like nothing could stop us.  When we were 20, we realized that somehow our life plans had veered wildly away from each other.  When you're in high school, you have no idea what you will want from life two years down the road.  And if you fall in love with this girl, it's going to be very painful if, when you both change, it turns out that you want different things.

Motivation Boys: Wrong Motivation? Dec 08 2007

Hey tyrdrop, I have a little different take on the situation --

From your comment, that you want to be more comfortable in your own skin, it seems like you REALLY want this weight loss to happen for you, not him.  So in that case, your main motivation is yourself.  Congratulations!  It's like, some people wanting to drop pounds before their high school reunion or before they go on a cruise.

My main motivator was that my family is taking a family portrait this year -- of course, before I heard about the photo, I knew I had some weight to lose, but the deadline of the photo gave me a reason and a time frame to work with, which was a lot more helpful than "some day when I feel like it ..."

If it helps, I have the opposite problem -- the minute I get a steady bf, I become so overly absorbed with him that I forget to take care of myself & gain weight as a result.

BTW, cellophane: some guys WILL date you & once you become more serious, begin telling you how to change yourself (gain/lose weight, dye hair, change makeup, clothes) in order to belittle you & gain control.

Weight Loss Drinking water and weight loss?? Dec 07 2007
05:38 (UTC)

The theory is that many people eat when they're not really hungry because they're actually thirsty.  Food contains water, so it's not a totally crazy idea for the body to eat when it's thirsty.  But as water has 0 calories, if you stay hydrated, then you'll only feel hungry when you're actually hungry, and not when you're hungry and when you're thirsty.

Plus, if you drink lots of water, it helps to fight bloating that can result from TTOM, drinking alcoholic beverages, and high amounts of sodium.

AND, it's good for your skin, improves your workouts, and keeps all your organs & systems functioning smoothly.

I'm not worried about the count on the food, except maybe I should be since my annual holiday tradition includes picking the fried fat off the ham ... drool ...

But the REAL reason I'm not counting on Christmas is the veritable buffet of alcoholic beverages that will be at my disposal.  And nothing ruins a good buzz like realizing punch + rum = 250 calories.  ;)

This thread became HILARIOUS.  Thanks, guys.  Needed a laugh.

Of course, julie, if you find that breakfast doesn't work for you, you should not eat it.  But, one day is hardly going to give you an accurate picture, right?  I mean, most scientists do eating studies that cover months if not years.  So, feel free to play around with what you eat.

I bet, if you incorporate more PROTEIN into your breakfast it will keep you full longer.  Also, maybe a mid-morning snack is in order.  And finally, if you're really concerned about weight loss, you might want to forget about muffins and bagels for now.  They are SO high calorie and DO NOT keep you full for very long!  I'm always STARVING an hour after I eat either.

Of course, since you of course do deserve to eat the things that you enjoy, having a few mini-muffins or half a bagel might be right up your alley -- or whole wheat / multi grain versions will help keep you full & provide some healthy fiber.

giggle puppy -- for many people, the body begins to store extra weight in the early teens to prepare for later growth spurts & puberty.  That's just the way the body works -- it cannot function AND grow AND develop merely from the calories you ingest -- it uses stores of fat.  If you don't believe me, why don't you just google it?  or ask your the anatomy teacher @ your local high school.

I was a chubby girl from 10-14 (5'3"-5'4", 118-125) even though I participated in sports year round and ate healthy foods, then started growing an inch a year until I was 17, and suddenly was very slender (5'8", 135).  I didn't know what a calorie was and couldn't care less.  Trust me -- there's some crazy stuff happening to your body in those teen years, and it needs all the energy it can get.

plh, I get frustrated sometimes, too -- mostly because I know my advice to these teens to not worry about calories goes unheeded.

Weight Loss total estimate/burn meter?? Dec 06 2007
07:03 (UTC)
When you're in the "My Account" page and you see the burn ticker (next to the calorie ticker) the smaller number on top is the total estimate of what you will have burned by the end of today based on your activity level and the additional activities you have entered.  The larger number below it represents the amount of calories that CC estimates you have burned so far today.
Weight Loss lack of sleep = HUNGER. suggestions? Dec 06 2007

Answer: get at least 8 hours sleep.  Not only does lack of sleep make you feel hungrier, the stress it puts your body through results in the release of hormones that stimulate fat storage.  Not good.  Cut the clubs.
Weight Loss bad advice? Dec 06 2007

I hate to doubt you, but perhaps your calculations on the equation were off.  CC estimates that at your height & weight, at a sedentary (not comatose -- watching tv & office work type lifestyle) rate, that you would burn 1700 calories a day (if you're 24), in which case 1300 would be a reasonable amount to stimulate weight loss of a little under a pound a week.

I'd go with CC, if I were you.  Using their calculators helped me lose the 15 pounds I wanted to.  :)  But out of curiosity, how much weight do you intend to lose?  At your height, 142 lbs is perfectly healthy.

Weight Loss never eating breakfast again! Dec 06 2007

Eating breakfast DOES kickstart your metabolism, which is why it helps you lose weight.  Cereal really isn't the best thing to eat if you want to curb your appetite though, as it's so easily digested.  Try a boiled egg and granola with yogurt.

If you're a teenager, which I assume you are since you eat at an assigned school lunch period, you can probably still lose on 1500 calories a day.  Or hey, why don't you add in some exercise and lose on 1800 a day?

Finally, it's not breakfast's fault that you had a bagel and a chocolate chip cookie for lunch -- that was your choice.  Next time try adding an apple and a protein bar to your lunch -- less cals, more filling.
