So do you want to be their definition of a loser, or your definition of a loser? It's your call.

I'm not disgusted by myself/my bodily functions, I'm just disgusted by the thought of putting something as nasty as a used tampon into a machine that I use to wash my clothes. :) There's a difference in accepting the fact that I have to bleed from my vagina every month, and wearing a used tampon strung around my neck like a dogtag, doncha think?

Have you tried telling this to your parents? Maybe they don't realize what they're doing? In any case, I think the best thing you can do for yourself is try your best, but make sure YOU'RE happy with yourself. Explain to them that you're just not a straight A student all the time, and you don't want to be a doctor (or whatever), and that they'll have to learn to deal with it. I know that probably sounds impossible, but I really think that's the only way.

"thats would be awesome if they made tampons that could be washed in the laundry machine. haha"

Eeeeeeew! Why would anyone want to put a used tampon in the washing machine that you wash your clothes in?

My gym's really small, so I have to use a Smith Machine for squats. It's true that the Smith machine is inferior to using a real bar, but I haven't had any trouble with the results I'm getting, and I've been using it for almost a year. My only beef is that it does feel awkward/unnatural, but it's my only option right now. So I wouldn't worry about using a Smith machine, as long as you're comfortable with it. You could also try dumbbell squats.

I prefer tampons, but will use pads if that's my only option. I only sleep in pads, because I'm paraoind about TSS.

I think I can speak for most of the females on this board when I say that I'm not ignorant about organic tampons and what not, I just don't see the point. The bleached ones aren't affecting me or my health, and they're cheaper and more accessible. So kudos to you for using organic tampons/diva cups, but that's just not for me, and I can guarantee that you're not going to convince me otherwise.

First off, it's a bad idea to weigh yourself constantly, especially before/after a workout or a meal. You should weigh yourself once or twice a week to get an accurate track of your progress. Giving up soda is great, and so is walking and playing DDR for exercise. Getting even more types of exercise ( running/jogging, lifting weights, swimming, biking, martial arts, etc.) would be great, but it's not necessary. I've never heard of calorie confusion, but maybe it's like cycling your calories? Calorie cycling is when you eat a different set amount of calories on different days of the week (some higher, some lower) to add up to a desired average. Whatever you decide to do, make sure you're eating enough for a growing 14 yr. old boy (don't use this site to figure out how much to eat because it's meant for adults, look it up on a different site, like sparkteens.) Basically, get lots of exercise, drink lots of water and eat lots of protein, fruits, veggies, and whole grains, and don't freak out or obsess. Good luck!

Foods eating out Mar 03 2008

Would you rather have butter or a loogie in your broccoli? If you're going to ask them to alter the dish, be very polite, but keep in mind that there's a chance they'll competely ignore you, or do something icky to your food. I've heard plenty of horror stories from kids who've worked in the food business.

Woah. I'm kinda shocked at all the replies berating you for eating over 2000 calories, and people saying how little they eat. If you guys are teens, and if you exercise (I'm assuming you do,and if not, you should) you should be eating at least 1800 calories. Seriously. I used to do the whole "OMG I ate 1680 calories I'm gonna get fat!" thing and I was miserable. Now I don't really even count calories. If you find yourself eating more than you intended, it's probably because you're not eating enough earlier in the day. The reason you guys are getting hungry on 1400 calories a day is becuase it's not enough and your body is trying to tell you that. Still not convinced? Think about it like this: Is it better to eat a couple hundred more calories, say 1800 a day, of good, healthy food or eat 1400 calories and then binge on crap later and go over 2000? Oh, by the way you could use more fruits and veggies in your diet.

I think it's great that you make an effort to work out, even with your illness. Tons people don't even work out, and they don't have a legit excuse. The important thing is that you feel like you're accomplishing something. Do you feel tired (not exhausted) and like you've worked your muscles? If so, I'd say you're doing fine. But you should definitely check with a doctor just to make sure.

Lift weights Sunday (abs, back, biceps, chest, & triceps) and Monday (legs, shoulders, abs) for 45 to 70 min.; Brazilian martial arts on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 1.5 hours; ideally I jog three miles on Wednesdays and Fridays, but usually, if I actually have time to/feel like getting off my butt and do something, I'll just go to the gym and walk/jog three miles. Satuday is my off day.

Young Calorie Counters Abs Help! Feb 25 2008

This has already been said, but the only way to get rid of stomach fat/flab is to lose weight. After you've done that, you can work on defining you abs with a variety of exercises. It's more important to do a few repetitions correctly than a ton of repetitions incorrectly. Personally I hate crunches and hardly ever do them. For my abs I mainly do V-ups and bicycles, but that's only the tip of th iceberg. Just try to find some that you like/don't mind doing, and that you can feel working for you.

(edited to say..) What you're eating is also important. Sodas, sodium, and other unhealthy things can make you look puffy, so try cutting those out, or moderating your intake.

90 lbs is really unhealthy. I'm 5'2'' and when I was 110 lbs I had to struggle to stay there and was really irritable and tired all the time, not to mention weak. I wanted to gain muscle but I couldn't lift very much weight. I've gained some weight and now I want to down get to 115ish,  with most of that being muscle. I don't care about my weight as much as my appearance, because muscle weighs more than fat anyway.
Young Calorie Counters My Strange Questions and Weird ED Perceptions Feb 25 2008

You definitely don't need to lose weight. Trying to lose weight would probably make your ED even worse. You should work on developing good habits, like healthy eating and exercise. If you're unhappy with your appearance, seriously evaluate if you really think you could use a little improvement, or if its just stemming from your warped sense of body image. Even at my lightest weight I was still unhappy with myself. Looking back, having gained some weight and some perspective, I see that I should have been happy with myself and that I looked great but instead all I focused on were the flaws I could find or make up in my mind.

I take a turkey or ham sandwich pretty much every day; occasionally canned tuna with wasa crispbreads. Leftovers or lean cuisines are a good idea, too.

Haha. Yeah, eggs are a really bad idea if you care about offending people. I used to take hardboiled eggs, and a bunch of people would complain about "that smell" when they passed by my locker. xD

Weight Loss What should I eat??????? Feb 18 2008

Ha. America is obese because people think eating is a hobby, are ignorant about nutrition, and have no self-control.

Weight Loss 5'2'' and 5'3'' gals - what sizes are you? Feb 18 2008

I usually wear anywhere from size 1 to 3. Haven't weighed myself recently but I'm usually around 115-117, would like to get down to 113ish though. 5'2'' and when I gain weight it goes straight to my midsection. I don't really get a belly, that area just gets thicker/my butt starts to disappear.

Young Calorie Counters Do I need to gain more weight? Feb 16 2008
22:22 (UTC)
Honestly, that doesn't sound healthy to me. But everyone's different. If you feel comfortable and have enough energy throughout the day, I'd say don't worry about it. But if you're struggling to stay at that weight, denying yourself, feeling low-energy, or unhappy in general, I'd say loosen up and gain a few pounds. Do you work out or lift weights? If not you should start. At 5'7'' and 110 lbs, you can't possibly have much muscle on you. If you do start working out, you DEFINITELY need to eat more.
Foods Ever bring your own food to a restaurant? Feb 16 2008

Uh, I'd have to agree with peaceloveandhominy. That would have been in REALLY bad taste. Bringing food to a restaurant, expecting them to prepare it for you, completely out of the goodness of their hearts? Yeah, that's a little much. Glad you came to your senses, but don't attack someone for calling you out on your own temporary lapse in judgement.
Young Calorie Counters Lose weight around breast area? Feb 16 2008

It varies from person to person, but your breasts will shrink with weight loss, and also if you lift weights/exercise vigorously. I went down a cup size when I lost fifteen pounds and started lifting weights.
Young Calorie Counters Inner Thigh Fat - I HATE It!! Feb 16 2008

I used to hate my inner thigh jiggle, but its pretty much gone now thanks to a combination of weight loss, jogging, weight lifting, and brazilian martial arts. Just do activities that you enjoy and that work your leg muscles. Heavy squats/leg extensions will do wonders. I've also heard horse-back riding tones the inner thighs.
Health & Support I feel like I'm going insane from this diet! Feb 14 2008

Whine, whine, whine, whine. Get over yourself.

I actually used to be a lot like you, but I grew up a little bit. The only way to enjoy life is to DECIDE to enjoy life, and to make a conscious effort to live a fulfilling life. Not moping around contemplating suicide. And restricting yourself that much is not a good thing, I speak from personal experience. I was an emotional wreck when I restricted myself like that.

It seems to me you've already made up your mind to restrict yourself and just make yourself miserable in general. I really don't know why you made this post. If you actually CARE about being healthy and happy and living, you'd listen to what these people are telling you. I'm not gonna repeat it all for you.

You should get outside, get some exercise. I think it would do you good. Don't give me that "I don't have time, I have school" ****. I go to a demanding school and I work out a lot.

If you actually care about your well-being you'll make some changes. Otherwise, go ahead and make your life miserable. It's your life, or lack thereof.

(edited for spelling)

Young Calorie Counters have you told your friends... Feb 14 2008

I didn't need to tell anyone- it was fairly obvious. I dropped about 15 lbs. over the summer, which doesn't sound like a lot but I have a pretty small frame and wasn't overweight to begin with, just out of shape and unhappy. And everyone noticed the change in my eating: I used to go back for seconds, thirds, fourths at family gatherings, and then I started eating very small portions, skipping the cake, etc. Some of my family were concerned, but they didn't make a big stink about it and supported me for the most part. My friends noticed too, most of them were supportive and complemented my change in appearance. Some of them were a little miffed that I wouldn't pig out with them anymore, haha, and a couple thought I wouldn't be able to keep up with it. My parents were very supportive and proud of me, which kind of makes me feel like a hypocrite now because I no longer eat as healthy as I did when I first started. =/ Still a lot better than I used to, though.
Young Calorie Counters So, how many calories ARE teens supposed to get? (frustrated) Feb 13 2008

If that was directed at me, I'm also pretty active- martial arts/weight-lifting/cardio. She's definitely more active than I am, but I'm not exactly sitting on my arse all day (just most of the day.) ;)

What I was trying to say is that it's better to go by what you feel is right for you than feel icky eating more/less because someone tells you to. Just be smart and relatively healthy in your choices. It also depends if you're trying to lose/maintain.
