Foods When do you eat most of your food? Jul 03 2008

I tend to eat most of my calories for dinner.  I am rarely hungry before 5, some days not until 7pm and have to make myself eat anything for breakfast or lunch.  So I eat at least 2/3rds of my calories after 5pm.   Some days I do get hungry earlier than that and eat then.  I figure my body knows what it needs and just act accordingly.

I don't really like microwaved eggs from my experience it makes the rubbery, if you just want hardboiled, make them at home and bring them to work with you.  If you would like to try to do microwaved eggs, here is a guide.  http://whatscookingamerica.net/Eggs/Microwave Eggs.htm

Yes, go to My Account, then Logs, then go to the bottom of the page, go to date range, then select the first option and select yesterday.  You should be able to edit it that way.  Make sure you turn it back to today when you are done so you don't accident put today's food/activities in yesterday's log. :)  Good luck!

Eggs on scambled toast with a some fruit is a good breakfast and never weights me down.  Oatmeal is a good breakfast, I am not a big oatmeal fan and found this recipe and it eat it more often now.  Peach oatmeal I quite often double it or have it with something because it is pretty low cal, more fruit or toast with something on it.

Nothing!  Just watch you serving size.  I like pasta very much and eat at least 3 days a week and I lost my goal of 7.5 kg (about 16.5 lbs) in the time I sent out for it as well as going down one trousers size.  Whole wheat pasta is better for you than regular white flour pasta, but even 1 cup of the regular pasta has 10% of your fibre for the day.  The whole carbs are bad for you is a very bad diet myth. Your body needs fuel, and it is unhealthy to limit carbs too much!

Weight Loss how were your eating habits when you were a kid? Jul 02 2008

I was a weird kid because I would try pretty much anything at least once.  My grandfather still likes to tell the story of how that when I was 5, we went to this one seafood place and he asked if I had eaten steamed clams before and I said no.  He said that he would order some if I said that I would try it and I said sure.  He thought that I wouldn't like it but I ended eating about half of the bucket.  There are some things that I didn't like then that I like now, for example beans (would only eat the New England style baked beans), blue cheeses, potatoes that weren't fried.  My excuse for the potatoes in the US, unless you grow them yourself they taste like cardboard and they taste like potatoes in Europe because I still don't like baked potatoes in the US.  There are some things that I don't like as much anymore though too, I don't like eating meat that much.  Fish is great, but I don't eat much red meat or poultry.  I won't eat hot dogs or any finely ground sausage for that matter.

I have a serious gripe with the Tuna subs at Subway, the standard use to be use the low-fat mayo (which I have always liked much better then the other), but then they decided to change it and now it is made with the regular mayo, which is more rich and less healthy.  I still to this day do not agree with this decision by Subway, but on the other hand I understand why they did from a business aspect as the regular mayo is quite a bit cheaper by case then the light.

They still use light mayo for it most European countries.  I don't think that regular mayo is even a condiment you can get, at least not any of the stores I have been in Germany or UK.  The strange thing for my local Subway was they didn't have plain mustard for a while because not many people wanted it.  I guess a few other mustard lovers and me had asked enough because they have it again.  Laughing

It is funny you mention that as light mayo was the only mayo for the longest time, there was no regular mayo, then all of a sudden they decided to bring it in our district and it became the standard for what the tuna salad was made with.  I loved it when it was the light mayo, but now stay away from it like the plague.  Personally, when I was eating mayo on my subs I would always opt for the light at the Subways because I never got use to the richness of the regular and have always enjoyed the light.

As for the mustard thing, that is odd, but I guess it makes sense if they think there is not a demand for it.  Glad to hear it is back as it is a great fat free alternative.

That would make sense.  I used to live in the US and ate the tuna subs most of the time I would go to Subway.  I only really like that and the Veggie Delight.  I started using the calorie count and went to enter it in and it was about 100 calories more than I expected so I looked at the Subway UK website and it was in fact a bit more than 100 less than the one listed here.  I poked around on the websites and figured it out because it was the British was made with light mayo.  I always thought it tasted the same here (well, the bread is better in the UK, but I mean the topping) so it makes sense that is how it used to be.  It has been 4 or 5 years that I had gone to Subway in the US.  It is sad that you don't have the choice of light mayo for the tuna and knowing it is full fat in the US, I doubt I would get it, I think it would be too rich tasting.

The British don't seem too keen on mustard, and some of my British friends are appaled by my heavy use of mustard.  It isn't a problem in Germany because they love mustard there too and there are several types depending on what you eat.  Mmm... mustard.

Fitness Shopping as exercise? Jun 30 2008
20:38 (UTC)

I don't have a car and there isn't a bus to the supermarket so I have 20 minute walk to the nearest one, plus carrying the bags back.  If I want something special, I have to walk for 30 or 40 minutes to the nicer supermarkets.  So if you can walk to the supermarket, that is a way to sneak exercise in.   Going to the library is exercise too, not because it is far, only 10-12 minutes walk, but I am PhD student so I am hauling at least 10 books at time when go there and I have to go up and down the stairs for my building and for the library.

Weight Loss Eating back burned calories, yay or ney? Jun 29 2008
11:23 (UTC)

It depends how far back you mean.  I would cycle my calories and it was the weekly average that I paid attention to rather than day to day.  It was the easiest way for me because of my job there would be two days a week that I would have to eat more, having to eat lunch with collegues and be back to work within an hour where there were no real low cal options.  If I didn't I would have to eat lunch alone in my office and lunch was only time I would get to socialise with them so that wasn't a real option.  It worked quite well, I never really got stuck with my weight.  I think that is what you mean by your post, and if that is what you mean, I would recommend doing it. :)

I know that the major chains have to do it in NYC, I don't know if it has effected sales though.  I still will eat something fatty/high cal when I go out even if I know it is because I usually have it as a treat, ie something that I would eat more than twice a month or that I have budgeted into my day.  I wish more places would make the information availble so if you have to eat out, you can make an informed decision.  I do check online before I go, but you can't always do that and not everywhere has the information availible anyway.

i am glad to see this seems to vary from girl to girl :)

i was a 40D at my largest, and a 34C at my smallest (now) and the girls are kinda floatin in the C cup so i think i may try a B.

no way am i sad if it goes up and down, i am getting healthy so who cares!

i was measured at la senza not too long ago and the girl stated i was a 36D! har har har. she made a face when i tried one on and everything was just floatin around! so poo poo to professional measuring (unless you are getting orthotics)

remember, sizing is your number of inches around, then the a=1 b=2 c=3 d=4 inches outwards for the cup. put a ruler with the numbers facing up under your breast (the smaller of the two) and look straight down as best you can. this will tell you a cup size (or range of cup sizes) i see 2 3/4 inches when i look down.

you have to do this with a bra on, btw~ if you are floating in your bra or spilling out, perhaps it is time to get a new one!

Yeah, when I had it done a couple of years ago, the first place I went to the woman didn't seem to know what she was doing and she still couldn't get it right after 3 tries, twice as you said flotting around, the other one was way too small, and I couldn't even hook it.  I pretended that I got a text after the 3rd one and had to leave.  The other place measured and on the first time they fit.  I went back there again this time, they measured me twice because they had someone training and they asked if I minded if the trainee tried too, which I didn't because I figured that was more likely to have the right size by doing it twice.  You can have professional ones that crappy usually it is a big hint that is the case if they are way off in the first one.  My main complaint now is I can't seem to find a good strapless bra because 32DD is weird size, and I need one for my cousin's wedding.  One of my friends told me about a place that specialises on D and higher cups so I will try there, but I am not too hopeful as that I have tried 5 stores now. Frown  So if anyone in the UK has any suggestions of where to find bigger cups sized bras I would be grateful.  I thought of waiting to go the US to look because it would be cheaper, but I don't know I will have time before I go to try on the dress to go from shop to shop bra shopping.

Weight Loss How Many Days Does it Take to Loose Weight? Jun 28 2008

Most people don't notice with that little of weight.  I didn't notice myself until I lost almost 10 pounds, you see yourself everyday so you don't notice as much as others do.  One of my friends told me she could tell I lost weight just after 4 pounds, and she didn't know that I was trying to loss weight.  However, like one of the other replies said, you might also be eating too little.  You should ideally only eat 500-1000 calories less a day than you burn.

Ha, ha, ha.  I agree with a lot of those.  Please, don't ever come to Germany, though.  The saying here is that it's a "sevice desert".  Like rain in the desert, here is none.

I'd love to only wait 10 minutes instead of having to flag someone down after 15.  Free refills - don't exist here.  You pay for every drop.  Crayons for any kids at all - you've got to be kidding.  They'd charge you for that, too.  Tips and service charges are already included in the price of the meal, so there's no hope of making a statement by not leaving a tip.  There's also no incentive for the server to be a good server; they don't get anything extra for their hospitality or efficiency.

Yikes, you must be unlucky where you live in Germany.  The only time that we have it that bad with waiting that long my German husband gets so annoyed he doesn't leave any tip.  Yeah, there are no refills but refills are a North American thing as far as I can tell, I know France, the UK, and Germany quite well, the only place I know that does refills that I know is Subway and Yo Sushi!.  I have been in the Netherlands, Belgium and Northern Italy and they don't seem to do either.  Our favourite café will give you crayons if ask.  The kid has to draw on the paper tablecloth, which might not good to encourage, but it is free.  They will bring a bowl of water for your dog too, usually without asking.  It is rare to have service charges where we live.  I only know a handful of place that do it, and only two of them are no matter what, the others you need 6 or more people.  Even there you get good service because they are hoping for 5% more over the service charge if they do a good job.

I like to tip fairly generously (usually works out to 20-25%) if the service is decent. A little less if it's medicocre or a few screw-ups. But for those few occasions where it's REALLY bad....what is the right thing to do, tip-wise? Stiff them? Give them the one-penny message? We usually end up giving a poor tip like 10% but I have to say I resent it...my boyfriend thinks that even the worst service gets 15%. Shouldn't a tip have to be earned?

On a side note...in Italy, it is considered very rude to bring the customers the cheque before they ask for it, and even to bring it in a timely fashion after hey have asked! We found this out the hard way....and learned pretty quick to say "Il conto per favore" but still ended up waiting excessive amounts of time before it came. And your dining experience is expected to take all evening...many restaurants only took reservations for ONE set of tables all evening, no turn-over. We had one memorable experience where we had a light two-course dinner (we'd had a late lunch and werent very hungry) that took a record 4 hours. Wow were sick of sitting there, on hard wooden chairs no less. We ended up getting goofy and taking pictures of eachother looking as annoyed and bored as we could act, it was funny but I am sure they thought we were rude North Americans....in our defense it really was excessively long, they were totally ignoring us, even to bring beverages or anything.

And one last thing...one pointer that we can take from the Europeans...why do servers feel they have to whisk away your plate the second you are done, leaving your dining partner to finish eating alone? Leave the darn plate! In Italy and France, they always waited to clear until both parties were done, so that no one had to be the last one eating (well someone is always last to finish but it's not so obvious when everyone still has their plates). I eat slow so am always last, and I HATE it when everyone's plates have been cleared while I am still eating!

Yeah, general rule in Europe is that you have to ask for the bill, though the Italians do seem take awhile to bring it you were as if you ask in Germany, France or the UK, you get in within in a couple of minutes unless it is very busy.  I don't even really think about it.  Maybe when I visit my family in the US the waiters think I am weird because I ask for bill when I done, and it should be obvious.  :)

I usually tip pretty good when I do go the US, I worked in a restuarant as a summer job when I was doing my undergraduate and know that what they have to put up with.  If I do get bad service, I will tip badly though.  I had some pretty unpleasant days working at that restuarant because of customers that were total jerks, but I never took it out on other customers.

re. the waiting times. You probably know this already but a lot of this is cultural - Americans especially seem to like quick service, quick exit, etc.. whereas in Europe it is normal to be sitting at dinner for 2-3 hours all told. Heads up for when you travel! (Also, in other countries tips are either not given or are much less - those European tourists think they're being generous when they give 10% here. Heck, for that matter, when I was a kid the standard tip was only 10% instead of the current 15.

Kinda off topic, just thought I'd mention it for those who were planning to travel this summer.

Depends on the country, the UK and Germany it is a bit slower than in the US usually a hour to hour and half to finish.  Of course it depends on the place, fancier places take longer.  In a good restaurant in France that isn't meant mainly for tourists, you should have slow service.  The mark of a tourist trap and therefore bad food is a hovering waiter, these isn't always the case if you go to some of the ethnic neighbourhood as the locals have different expectations (The noodle bars in Nippon Town in Paris are usually good for a quick and good meal).  If you get a menu (a fixed price meal of a starter, main and dessert), you will most likely be there for 2 hours minimum.  My favourite place in Paris it would take 2 1/2-3 hours to have that.  The waiter should only make his presence known if your drink is empty (refills are very rare in Europe) and your plate as been empty for a couple of minutes.  You are meant to enjoy food, and the French don't think you can do this quickly.

The Europeans don't really do doggy bags either.  The only places I have noticed that do is Greek places in Germany.  I would feel weird to ask for one elsewhere.  Then again they don't give the giant portions in most places.

No, you don't have to tip much, in France and Germany, 5% for okay service and 10% for very good service.  The UK you should tip 10% for okay and 15% for very good service.  Sometimes service is included and then you only should tip if if the service was really good.  It should say on the menu card and/or receipt.

Oh, don't ask for tap water in Germany.  The Germans don't drink tap water, and most likely won't give it you or will be annoyed it if they are able to.  It isn't an issue in the UK or France and most French people will drink tap water and most restaurants filter it for free.

I don't like the places in the US that try to get in you in and out in a hour, especially after getting used to being able to relax whilst eating out.  Though I want my food at normal order and the correct one!

Oh gods, you guys are scarying me.   I went on this diet to lose my boobs.   At 16  I wore a 36 C or D.   I weighed all of 130 lbs.  80 percent of my weight gain has been in my boobs and Im up to 189 now.  So you can imagine how big Ive gotten.  I don't even try to wear a bra anymore unless I absolutely have to.  They cut into my shoulders and make my back pain three times worse.

So please don't tell me your boobs are getting bigger.  My mother ended up having to have breast reduction surgery done.  The way my back has been feeling the last few days,  Im seriously considering it myself.  If they get any bigger, I think I will cry.

Well, I think it depends on the person.  After having my cousin send me the measurements again, I realised that the bust remained the same size just the chest measure went down.  It is a matter of when you lose weight the most.  I know when my mom lost weight, she lost in the breast area but not much in the hips and did the opposite so I wouldn't say that because your mom had that problem that you will too.

I thought TV was way more lenient all throughout Europe! Especially more open than America would be. Don't they show naked people on TV a lot? My dad said he saw some.

Depends on the country and the time of day.  In Britain, you can't show nudity before 10 pm and you can't really show some things then still.  The Germans seem to have the same "watershed" but you see more on German TV, including puzzling games shows hosted by a trashy looking topless woman.  I am not sure about the watershed for sex in France, didn't watch much late night TV, but when I would watch rugby games they would do interviews in the lockerooms and there was no attempt hide things there.   There is not wrong with men kissing on TV in the UK as far as the rules go.  Heinz choose to remove it, which is why I am convinced it was a publicity stunt.

Well, I think when I bought the bra, there were the right size because they fit well and felt good, but I moved to France shortly after afterwards and began to put on weight because I liked food a lot and didn't really pay much attention to what I was eating.  Massive salad with fried goat cheese and honey and oil, not really that healthy even though it is a salad and especially when followed by something quite fatty, not to mention the really good tasting fast food that I would sometimes have for dinner when I came home too tired to sit in a restaurant for a long time or cook.  I would have gained more weight if I wasn't always walking or taking the public transport everywhere.

I took measurements for a bridemaid's dress for a wedding about 3 1/2 months ago, and ask my cousin to send them to me if she still had them out curiously.  Apparently the bust was the same as that point, so I guess I was lucky to not loose much with 6 months of weight loss, other than I apparently have a hard bra size to find now.  Thanks for the congrats newbjy and notanotherxerox.  It wasn't a lot of weight, but I definately have my energy back, which is awesome.

I would use it as motivation to continue on your hard work of getting healthy.  I am very lucky that my mom is usually very supportive of me, but my husband's mom can be quite cruel to both my husband and me.  When she saw my husband and I at Christmas Eve at our place, she said, "Oh my, both of you are getting fat."  Then she makes lots of high cal food the next day, all of the things that she knows are my favourites and complains in front of my parents that I am not eating enough.  Argh.  Moms can be cruel when they don't mean to be.  You have to realise that she probably didn't mean it to be mean and is just worried about you as mothers tend to be about their children.  It doesn't always look like you have lost weight when you aren't that heavy.  A lot of people didn't really notice until I was halfway to my goal, 4 kg (about 9 lbs) and that is might be the case for you.  But after you do lose that be of weight, it is really worth it because you realise that you not only look better, but you feel better (less tired, etc.).

Go on with your goal in a healthy way, it is about make yourself better.  I agree with the others the comments maybe to due to jealousy.  It is hard to make the life choice to improve your health and those that don't want to can be very critical.

Yeah, I am somewhat short too (5' 1 1/2").  I lost 7.5kg so almost the same as alexandrapaige.  It was more puzzling me because when I was this weight before that I had different size. Obviously, the fat moved around since then was this weight last time.   I am not sure where from before because even with the lost chest size nothing more than D would make sense.

Ah well, it is good to know I am not alone with that and highly recommend getting a bra fitting.  I think I would have been in the shop all day before I would have thought to try that size.

Thanks for your replies, both are helpful.  I think measuring before I want a snack will help with the temptation to eat more than I should, it is easier to say no when you are full.

I will try with the dried fruits, I don't think I have seen the 100 calorie pack things here, the British seem to be more into trendy diets than counting calories so maybe I can just measure something like that for myself.

It is a good though with putting the mayo back on the sandwiches, it is good to get a bit of fat and I am usually on the lower end what you are meant to eat for the day with fat.

I have gone back to having a small glass of red wine a day and that has helped a bit so the small snacks should make up the difference.

German rye bread (you know the dark wholegrain stuff that is very heavy), bel paese cheese and Dutch peanut butter (it is much less sweet the American stuff).  I blame the cafe that I go to sometimes for their 'Dutch' breakfast.  I think that maybe I was just needing some fats, can't figure out why else it sounded good because I don't eat that very often.  I went to the café and had it for lunch and just cut back on dinner to make up for the calories.

When you get them?  That can help in figuring out what it might be.  I had fainting spells a few years ago.  It was triggered shortly after I was very ill with the flu for a couple weeks and just wasn't going away.  After having a number of expensive medical tests, I went to a neurologist.  He figured out that it was just my blood pressure.  I didn't need to go to a neurologist for that, but he was the first doctor to actually listening to what I had to say, rather than jumping to conclusions.  After a month of medication I was back to normal.

Foods What do ya'll put in your tea? May 07 2008
15:33 (UTC)
18

I drink black tea up until 4 and green tea after 4. Sometimes I drink red bush tea and herbal teas.

For black tea, I use loose tea and a tea ball. The kinds I have currently is Darjeeling, English Afternoon tea, Ostfrisishe Goldblatt Mischung (mmm... my favourite, a mix from Oldenburg, which known for tea and coffee in Germany), and Marco Polo (flavoured with fruits and flowers).

For green tea, I have a special Japanese tea pot with built-in infuser. I drink mostly Japanese green tea, only Chinese green tea on rare occasion. I drink Sencha (the most common Japanese green tea, grassy smell) most often, but I also drink Genmaicha (green tea with roasted brown rice), Shincha (the same type of tea as Sencha, but from the first harvests so it tastes sweeter), Bancha (late harvests of Sencha) and Gyokuro (grown with shade, most sweet without anything added but more expensive so I don't drink it as much). In the mornings if I need a caffeine boast, I will have Matcha (ground green tea that is a suspension rather than an infusion so has a high caffeine content as you are consuming the leaves).

I never put anything in my green tea, I buy high quality tea so it would be a waste to put anything in because the flavour is good enough on its own. I don't usually put anything in my black tea unless I am out somewhere because the Brits think you are weird if you don't put milk in at least.

The one I use the most is herbes de Provence.  I got through large amounts of it.  I use a lot of crushed red pepper flakes; it adds a nice balanced flavour as well heat.  I use chili powder a lot too.  I make my own and put it in old spice jars because I don't like the British chili powder.  I am big fan of garlic too.  I go through a lot of ginger, too.  I like to make a salad dressing with fresh grated ginger.

When I am at university and therefore just buying food for me, I spend about £20-£30 a week (about $40-$60).  When I am at home in Germany, my husband and I spend about €80-€90 a week (about $125-$140).  Food is more expensive in Britain than in Germany but the German bill is higher because I eat almost no meat when on my own.  I rather get meat from a proper butcher, and there aren't as many around where I live in the UK so I opt for beans and cheese for protein instead.

One of my friends had a stroke, and he is only 31.  I tried to lose some weight about year ago because this one dress I loved wouldn't fit me anymore, but that wasn't enough to make the life change.  I did it for about 3 weeks and gave up because it was just easier to bakery or kebab place for lunch rather than making something healthy to bring with me or taking the time to go to a good restaurant with food that is good for me.  I needed the shock.  He is okay now, it was only a mild stroke so he was back to normal within a month.
