Weight Loss Weight loss/Body tone question Nov 13 2007

The BodyPump class is a wonderful way to start your weight training. They are usually very consistent with working each body part and you do what you can handle.  Don't feel intimidated because you might have weak arms.  If you can do that class consistently 2-3x a week, I can almost guarantee that in 4 weeks, you will begin to see some type of definition in your body.  I did the class for awhile, and then once I felt comfortable with the exercises, then I started doing my own thing.  I would highly recommend it.

Fitness Running advice... Oct 19 2007

I just ran my fist half marathon in February.  I am 31 and have never been active a day in my life until I started losing weight and running last year.  I did the same as you and followed a program from hal Higdon that I found online.  It definitely works.

For me, the 2 most important things I learned are that you have to be consistent and don't skip the long runs.  If I missed a week of running, it almost felt like I was starting from the beginning again.  Obviously things come up and sometimes you have to miss a day, but try to stick to the schedule as much as possible.  Try your best to NOT skip the long runs on the weekends.  These are very important and will be key to finishing that 13 mile run.  Also, once you get to the longer runs, start playing around with things to eat while you run.  You won't be able to finish 13 miles without eating something every 15-30 minutes.  find what works for your stomach and have that with you during the race.

Oh, and the last thing is make sure you have good running shoes.  If they're old, I suggest going to a specialty running store and get fitted for a pair.  it makes a big difference with your running.

Now that I've stressed you out, go train and have some fun.  It will be so gratifying to know that you were able to run 13 miles.  Woo hoo!  Happy running!

Weight Loss deficit? Oct 18 2007

I started at 5'6" 196 lbs, ate 1200 calories (ate 5xs per day with lots of veggies), no cheat meals, worked out 5-6 days a week and 1.5-2 hours per day  During my first 2 months, I never lost more than 2 pounds.  1-2 lbs is a healthy weekly weight loss.

I say that to say, sometimes it takes alot more for some of us to lose more weight.  Don't get discouraged.  As long as the scale keeps moving, and your clothes begin fitting looser, then you're on the right track.

good luck!

Fitness long-term running leads to knee problems in the future?? Oct 16 2007

My guess is that this lady ran 30+ miles a week and did most of it outdoors.

It is true that running is tough on the joints.  A great way to alleviate some of that is to cross train.  If you run 3-4 days a week and cross train on the other days, doing something that is not so strenuous on your knees (ie. swimming, elipitical, bike), then you should be ok.  Also, changing up the surfaces helps also.  If you like to run outside on the pavement, that's tough on the knees, so try to change it up by running on the treadmill, grass, track, etc.

Happy running!

Calorie Count Calories from fat... Oct 16 2007
16:16 (UTC)

Not a dumb question.

1 gram of Fat = 9 calories

1 gram of Carbohydrates = 4 calories

1  gram of Protein = 4 calories

It's just breaking down how many fat calories are in the product.  So if it says, it's 100 calories, then it's 100 calories.  The 80 just tells you that out of the 100 calories, 80 are made up of fat.

 I hope that makes sense.

Fitness Any Marathon runners?? I'm new and need advice. Oct 15 2007

Haven't done a marathon, but I did a half marathon.  Kudos to you for all of your hard work and training!

You definitley need to carb-load the night before.  Your body will need and crave the energy.  Make sure to eat a healthy breakfast about an hour before.  Oatmeal, banana, toast with peanut butter.  Things that will get you going for the start of the race.  Make sure to carry snacks with you.  You will definitely need to eat while you're running.  You will not make it 26.2 miles without anything.  You will need the energy.  I kept gummy bears and popped a couple in every mile after mile 4.  Also, goo gels are great ebcause they're full of sugar which will keep you going.  I personally hate them, but I know alot of people that use them.

You should be able to find alot more detailed information on the internet.

Good luck!

Have you tried going to a specialty running shoe store?  They can usually fit any type of foot, arch, gait, etc.  And while most people think they are more expensive than the mall stores, they are just as competitive.  I've never paid more than $90 for my shoes.  And it makes a big difference in your performance and safety.  Good luck!

I agree that you should try and up your calories.  Also, maybe try to incorporate some type of cardio into your routine.  I'm assuming you dance ballet, and while it is a great workout, it's similar to pilates or yoga, in that it helps elongate your muscles and tone up, but it doesn't do much for getting rid of the fat.  Adding some running, walking, elipitcal etc for 45-60 minutes 3xs a week, I think will help shave off some of those extra pounds.  Good luck!

You do look great though in your pic!

Weight Loss Weight loss question---2 pounds a week... Oct 15 2007

I would say to decrease your calories to about 1400-1500 and increase the intensity/length of your work outs.  I started at 196, ate 1200 calories and worked out 5xs per week for 1-2 hours per day.  I ususally did 1 hour of walking hill intervals on the treadmill, 30-45 minutes of weights in 1-minute intervals, and then I would do some type of aerobic class in the evening.  With all of this I lost exactly 2 lbs per week for my first 2 months.  It's definitely alot of sacrifice for such a small weight loss, but it was healthy, so I was happy with it.

Also, try to keep a food journal.  This will keep you honest and when you're not losing the pounds you want, you can go back to see what you're eating.  We tend to underestimate the calories we take in when we don't keep track of them.  Remember that you must burn 3,500 calories in order to lose 1 pound.

Don't beat yourself up for losing 1.2 lbs per week.  That's a great achievement!  As long as the scale is going down each week, then you're doing it right.  Congrats on the weight loss so far and keep up the great work!

Weight Loss Help! Oct 10 2007
23:53 (UTC)

I think you're good at 1500 calories, but you might want to increase the intensity of your workouts.  What speed are you walking?  Maybe push for 45-60 minutes 5xs per week.  Try to do some incline intervals within that time to increase your heart rate.  I mean, if you're walking at say 3  mph for 30 minutes, you may be burning 250 calories.  I'm guessing there.  And if you're doing that 5xs a week, that's 1250 calories burned.  It takes 3500 calories to burn 1 lb of fat.  So unless you're eating 2000 or so less calories than before, it's going to take you that much longer to lose 1 pound.  don't beat yourself up.  You just need to figure out what works best for you.  I wish you the best!

I wouldn't stress over it.  That's why I like to weight myself only once per week, because there are so many things that can make your weight fluctuate, and I would drive myslef insane, if I saw it go up and down every day.  And depending on how much you have to lose, it would make sense that you may lose more than 2 pounds per week, and still do it in a healthy way.  So just stay strong and keep doing what your doing!

Fitness RUN 2, 3..miles but cant run more...why? Oct 08 2007

You may be trying to push yourself.  For me, it helped to have a routine.  If you go to http://halhigdon.com/ and click on free programs, there are a few great programs to follow.  Based on where you are now, you can choose a program to help you run a 10k, for instance.  They say you shouldn't try to increase your speed/distance by more than 10% a week, so try to be patient, and I think it will come to you.  Happy running!

Have you tried going to a specialty store?  The prices are comparable to the typical mall stores, but you have someone that will look at how you walk, your arch, etc, and choose a shoe based on that information.  It's worth a try.  I haven't had a bad experience with running shoes since I did that. Good luck!
Weight Loss Meridia... Oct 08 2007

I was on Meridia when it first came out about 8 years ago.  I was 165 and wanted to lose about 20 lbs.  It started off slow but in about 3 months I got down to 142.  I didn't change my diet (which consisted of mostly fast food) and I didn't exercise.  it definitely decreased my appetite.  I went from eating a double cheeseburger value meal to barely being able to eat a kid's meal.  I stopped taking the pills after about 4 months becuase I wasn't seeing any new changes.  I didn't have any side effects other than dry mouth which just made me want water.  Now here's the catch:

As I said, I never changed my diet or level of activity (which was none), within a year, I slowly started to see the weight gain.  After a year, I had gained 25 lbs.  I was now at about 172 which was my highest ever.  In the next couple of years, I continued gaining weight back until I hit 196.  That was 30 lbs over my heaviest weight!!  Lucky for me I finally realized that diet and exercise were the only things that would work and I was able to lose 37 pounds last year.

My whole point is that there is no easy fix.  Period.  Diet and exercise is the only thing that works.  I'm sure you can ask any overweight person who has taken diet pills if they have kept the weight off without changing their lifestyle.  My guess is that the answer would be no.

I'll come down off my high horse.  Sorry.  I just know how miserable that damn pill made me and I would hate for others to go through that.

Foods Always Hungry? Oct 05 2007
16:56 (UTC)

I think anyone will tell you that you NEED to eat breakfast.  That's your fuel for the rest of the day.  You should try to eat 5-6xs a day.  I usually do Breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner.  Every meal should have a protein and fiber.  This is what will keep you full and satisified.  Get some veggies in there.  I try to do a small salad and a cup of veggies with lunch and dinner.  That along with a protein and a complex carb, will leave you full, I promise you.  Try to choose 100% whole wheat bread instead of white bread, if you have a craving.  White bread is a simple carb, and will only act like it's filling you up, and then shortly after you will be hungry again.  Last year I started out at 5'6" 196 lbs, and was eating 1200-1400 calories and was plenty full.  You can eat 2000 calories a day, but if you're not eating the right stuff, then you can still feel hungry, and not lose weight.

Hope that helps you some.  hang in there you can do it!

My stats are very similar to yours when I lost weight. 5'6" 196 lbs 10 hour day office job.  I was at 1200 calories a day and used a food journal.  I made sure to eat every 2-3 hours and had protein and fiber with every meal and snack.  The biggest thing for me was that I worked out very intensely.  I worked out 4-5 days a week, walking inclines on the treadmill for an hour and 30 minutes of weights.  I never lost more than 2 lbs per week, and I was very happy with that.  I ended up losing 37 lbs.  I just started back 3 weeks ago, because I haven't met my goal, and while I've changed up my workouts, I've still been losing 1.5-2 lbs each week.  I truly feel that you need to up the intensity of your workouts and log all of your foods.  You can do it!

Pandajenn19 hit the nail on the head. You can do all the ab exercises in the world, but in order for the muscles to pop through you have to lower your body fat %age. I have a few female friends who have close to a 6-pack, and they have very little fat in their diet and a lot of protein. You just have to shed the fat. Good luck!

Try to have protein and fiber with every meal.  This will fill you up until it's time to eat 3 hours later.  Don't allow yourself to go without eating every few hours, or your body will go into starvation mode, and you will begin to binge.  Also, try to keep yourself occupied.  The busier you are, the less likely you will have the munchies.  I wish you the best!

It could also be the shoes that you're wearing.  It's important to wear a running shoe that fits right, and it makes all the difference.  You should be able to find a specialty shoe store in your area.  They will look at your feet and determine what type of shoe is best for you.  You won't pay much more than you will at a Foot Locker or something like that.  Good luck with the running!

Weight Loss Do i need to do more?? Sep 21 2007

Working out won't be easy if you want to see results.  Stick with it.  Eventually you will be able to run or do your power walk at an incline, and it will be easy, which means then you'll have to up it.  I understand your frustration.  I've never been active or played a sport in my life.  I decided I wanted to start running last year when I was 196 lbs 5'6".  I ran until I was out of breath and then walked.  Eventually my lungs grew stronger.  I completed my first half marathon 10 months after I started running.  You can do it!  You just have to push through the pain and most importantly, you have to be consistent with it.  I wish you the best!  Go out there and kick some butt!
