Again, thanks. y'all are confirming my suspicions. It gets weirder. She is the one who makes references to violence. one time she started an argument and then said she didn't want to talk about it anymore. She cut me off early and walked off. I followed her and continued-I was very upset. She later said that my continuing made her feel raped. she has defended that reference. I have been in verbal fights and I have been raped, I would never compare the two.

I think ultimately, I don't trust my BS detector. Then, I don't follow through with it.

Yikes. Sounds like she is the one using loaded language!

Fitness Let's try again...love handles?? Jul 16 2009

I also have one love handle bigger than the other, and I know that it's definitely because I favor my left leg in all exercise because of a car accident I was in. Sucks, but as far as I know, no one has ever noticed but me :)

I had a similar experience today.

I was backing out of a diagonal parking space slowly because of the huge obnoxious truck beside me, and somebody coming up slams on their brakes and honks and honks and honks. So I pull back in the spot to let them go around and they honk and honk and honk some more. So I figure they want the spot, try to back out again but can't because they are too close to me and they honk again. Finally my friend got out of the car and asked what the eff they wanted me to do, and what exactly those honks were accomplishing.

I HATE PEOPLE.

bwwwhaaaahahhaaaa I LOVE THIS THREAD.

Just for all you NROLFWs out there, I did squats today and actually saw beautiful defined muscle in my thighs for the first time ever. (I'm sure it's been building for awhile, but just now saw it.)

I was in love with myself :)

I'm also doing the NROLFW program, and this may get better results if you post in that group.

I can just speak to my own experience - other women in that program have a lot more knowledge to share. As far as the HIIT goes, I think there is some kind of metabolic benefit of doing it after the weights. I did it before for awhile but switched and had more energy for the weights.

Try to up your protein closer to 30% if possible and really watch what you are eating otherwise. I started noticing the most difference when I did those things and got past stage 1. You may also be overestimating what doing the program actually burns and need to adjust your calories. Also, the calories recommended by the book may be too high. Other people have found that as well.

To add another disturbing dimension to the lack of numeracy in our population...I do research on cancer treatment decision making, and MANY, MANY people simply do not have the numeracy skills to understand treatment risks and benefits, which are of course, mostly presented in a numerical format by highly educated doctors (badly) translating that info their patients.

Just for perspective - I eat around 1800 calories a day and I am 5'3, 124 pounds and exercise most days. I maintain my weight on this amount. You won't gain weight on 2000.

Just had a great breakfast this morning - whole wheat english muffin (130), egg (70 ish, depending on how you cook it), slice of cheese (80), and some sliced tomatoes. mmm...

Also - I love a wheat tortilla (130), a banana (100), tablespoon of pb (90), and a drizzle of honey folded over and grilled like a quesadilla.

They trusted me to make smart decisions, even when at the time I kind of wished I had more set boundaries (yeah, I was a weird kid).

There was always an expectation that we worked for what we wanted.

I always, always knew, that whatever I chose to do with my life, my parents would still love me and support me.

I've read through your posts and I don't think anybody has mentioned this, but how about substituting some of the bike riding for walking? It may help address the knee issues, you're still moving, and it will be lower intensity than bike riding.

The Lounge Graduate School Interview? Mar 17 2009
00:24 (UTC)

I'm in a PhD program for clinical psychology, so granted, that's different but here are just a couple of things I've picked up from our interview process.

WEAR A SUIT. You can never appear overdressed at an interview, and it WILL make someone stand out if they are not wearing a suit (in a bad way).

Be prepared to discuss why that particular program is a good fit for you - what they have that other schools don't - and why you are a good fit for it - how your previous experiences and skills can be demonstrated to their best advantage there, but also how they can fill in the gaps of what you still need to learn. I know that at least in grad programs in clinical psych, they are huge on FIT with the program. Otherwise, you are just another applicant with good grades and GRE scores that applied to a bunch of random places. You have to be able to coherently explain why you want to go to this program and not somewhere else.

And I definitely do not want to increase your nervousness, but the whole day is an interview. Even if they just have you meet other students in the program or everyone is eating lunch, that's part of the process and you should try to stand out (again, in a good way!) during that part as well. It's nerve-wracking, but as it was explained to me, if people can't hold it together for a day-long interview, interacting with others in a challenging environment, they probably can't hold it together during grad school either.

Best of luck to you!!

The Lounge When alcohol is a problem... Mar 14 2009

I'm going to disagree with the above poster. Just because something is normative does NOT mean it's healthy! Just think about this site - eating terrible food and living a sedentary life is the norm in this country, so does that mean that people who do it are healthy?

Binge drinking among college students is a problem in our country and should not be normative behavior. I'm not sure if the above poster missed the fact that her son got a DUI, which, perhaps if he hadn't been caught, he could have killed someone. So should we just shrug our shoulders and say 'oh well, I'd rather he drive drunk than be a social outcast!' This group mentality in our culture is disgusting and maybe if more people chose to be the 'social outcast' (which, seriously, if you can't make friends without drinking, find different friends) it would change these types of things.

Fitness NROLFW question for those who use the book religiously Mar 10 2009

I too used to have pain in my knees when exercising because of a bad car accident. It took me quite a while (um, almost 10 years!) to get into an exercise routine that strengthened my quads without causing knee pain. Now that I have quite a bit of quad strength, my knees rarely hurt. I do all exercises in NROLFW without any pain, so that program for knee rehab sounds like it's worth a shot!

I got married at 23, my husband was also 23. We'd been together 5 years, and as plasma girl said, we have changed a lot together in that 5 years. Was it always easy? NO. But life isn't easy. And we still love each other after now 7 years and sometimes uncomfortable growth and change. I don't think there's much we can't handle now. I'm also not interested in kids yet so we didn't get married for that reason either.

I also disagree with the implication that just because someone has good prospects after college means those go away if they get married. I'm working on a PhD and my husband is about to graduate with a Master's degree.

I think your response of laughing hysterically is a great one. It covers so many bases :)

Although I don't think I'd want your problem (I can't imagine having to be on the defense all the time!) where I am currently living is night and day compared to previously living in DC. Guys just DO NOT hit on women here. Ever. My 5 girlfriends and I go out and I can honestly say all of them are gorgeous, and we don't even get a second glance. The guys are just very laid back I guess. It does start to make one wonder if they are getting old and unattractive though...(at 25...)

My husband did this before I met him!! Laughing He was not overweight though, just completely crazy about his body image. He's better now.

This is tough...I've only sat beside an obese person on a flight once and since I'm small, I had enough space. However, he moved himself when there was two open seats together so he was obviously uncomfortable. I'm sure if I were like a 6 feet tall dude I would have moved if possible.

I am currently doing NROL4W (hence the protein shake every morning)

I though that Lou Schuler's iron clad rules of this program was that you have the protein shake right after your workout...did I misread that?

From page 75 of the book:

'Pre-workout shakes: If you're going to exercise in the next hour or so, you can have a pre-workout shake instead of a midmorning or midafternoon snack'

I'm guessing this is on days when you don't lift. Not sure.

Weight Loss Feaking Out!!! Nov 22 2008

Well, if you havent varied caloric intake significantly, then it must be extremely unlikely that you ate 3,500 calories over maintenance 5 times since Monday. It's clearly not real weight gain.

In that case, you have to assume that it's one or a combination of the millions of other reasons our scale weight can fluctuation: sodium, water retention from that or ttom or building muscle from exercise, weighing at a different time of the time, weighing after eating, the scale just being messed up...

I know it's tough when you are trying to lose weight, but step away from the scale. Try weighing again next week.

Thank you both.

He did go to the hospital and got an electrocardiogram and some other things run on his heart and that's fine. His blood pressure actually went down to 100/70 while he was there. They think the chest pain was making his blood pressure rise, and that the pain (which is also in his wrist and elbow) is a pinched nerve.

Thankfully he did not have to get bloodwork done or take bp meds, both of which he was really unhappy about.

Thanks for the replies!
