Have you started an exercise program? I tried dieting with no exercise for a long time, and had the same sorts of problems that you were having. But I find if I'm exercising regularly, it really helps control my bad eating habits and cravings. I also feel less depressed and more energetic, so I don't self-medicate with junk food.

I tend to just work around restaurant meals. This really isn't the absolute healthiest way to go about losing weight, but I've lost forty pounds so far while still eating 1-3 700-1000 calorie restaurant dinners a week. If I know I'm going out that night I eat lighter food during the day: frozen waffle and a serving of almonds for breakfast, fruit and yogurt for lunch, etc. Doing something like that you can definitely still stay close to your calorie level as I assume you're not eating under 1300 calories a day. And if you're exercising and eating around 1500 cals a day, it's even easier to work around. I'd love to eat in an absolutely healthy way but I'm horrible about boxing things up at restaurants and I'm not willing to put my life on hold for weight loss.

Any day is fine for me, reall. it's just a question of remembering to post the results. I generally get on the scale every morning.

And I still haven't managed to get my butt to the gym yet. I'm going to go running tonight to make up for it!

My Monday weigh-in:

Starting weight was 159.2 lbs, today was 158.5. I'm pleased since I've mostly been fluctuating 159-161 so that actually seems like it could be some real loss.

I dragged myself out of bed to yoga this morning to get my body moving again; I'm planning on going back to the gym tomorrow. Cardio workout tomorrow and then I'm going to start lifting again on Wednesday. I'm going with lighter weights/lighter workout this week to try to gauge how much strength I've lost.

This week I'm trying for more vegetables, too. I haven't been doing so well on that one.

Hey lynnhaslost, I'd love to talk weight training! Last year I was doing a lot of free weights, basically just following the stumptuous.com dumbell workouts. I love that website! I'm afraid I've probably lost a lot of the strength gains I made though as I really haven't lifted at all this summer :(

I love the idea of this group though; thanks for starting it!

I would love to do this if there's still room; I've been maintaining for about four months now and I need to get back into weight loss mode. I've lost 40 lbs with this site so far and I need to get motivated again.

Name: Lauren
Age: 23
Height: 5' 9''
Weight: 159 lbs
Goal Weight : 147 lbs

My goal is to start seriously lifting weights again; I've mostly been keeping my calorie intake down where it should be but I just can't seem to lose the weight without working out. I haven't been to the gym in three months which is just no good!

I've been on Calorie Count for about a year now, and I've lost forty pounds: from 200 lbs to 159 lbs. I've been in maintenence for three months now, mostly because with my schedule I haven't been able to excercise as much as I've wanted, and I wanted to test that I could indeed maintain my weight. I plan on losing another ten pounds; CC has really helped me think about what I'm eating and helped me realize that even though I was generally eating healthy foods, I was drastically over-eating without realizing it.

I've lost: 41 lbs.

This is a bit of a repeat, but not really... last year I lost about 20 lbs really fast in an unhealthy way and gained it all back as soon as I started eating again. This time I've changed the way I eat sustainably.

I'm not done, want to lose about 10 more lbs and build some significant muscle as well.

It's taken me about 9 months so far, and I've been doing really well. I took a break in December and ate at maintence to be sure that I could keep the weight off especially around holidays, which I did very sucessfully.

I've basically just been logging all my calories, eating at the level I calculate from Phord's calorie calculator. I also have been doing serious strength training 2-3 times a week with cardio thrown in at least twice a week.

Hey malaika, Stumptous.com has a great guide to proper form and tons of great info.

This page I've linked below is an example of a  dumbell workout routine, and each included exercise has a link to a set of demonstration pictures or video.

Keep in mind that the Healthy range for Tanita is from 21 to 36% which is higher than that stated for caliper measurement ranges.

Oh, I didn't know that. That's a little more reassuring.

The biggest one has been bagging my lunch and always making sure that I eat some kind of raw fruit or vegetable. It helps fill me up on a lower calorie meal. Instead of buying a sandwich that runs 500-700 calories, I'm fine eating yogurt and a orange or banana or apple, which is a fifth of the calories.

Melkor, is Covert Bailey's really that accurate? It gives me 24% bf, while the bf function on my Tanita scale at home gives me 31%. Is Covert Bailey likely more accurate than a Tanita monitor? I'm trying to get a handle on my body fat percentage so I can adjust calorie intake accordingly.

I should probably just get some calipers.

I'd also like a decent calculation method, or an idea of how accurate the impedence methods are. I have a Tanita scale, but I don't know how accurate it actually is.

Thanks so much for your post, phord. I know I need to adjust the calorie level when I'm not excercising; for the majority of the time I was sedentary I was eating 1300-1400 calories to compensate. I hadn't been to the gym because I was in the middle of grad school exams. Each day I tried to go for a half-hour walk, but it didn't always happen due to time constraints. But now I'm back to lifting 3 days a week plus 2 days of just cardio.

I know that I don't have nearly the muscle mass I should; I have muscular legs and strong abdominals as I was a ballet dancer  for many years, but my upper body is extremely weak (at the moment I struggle to do 3 sets of shoulder presses with two 15 lb dumbells.) One of my major goals is to build muscle, though that's not something you can generally do while in deficit, right?

I'm not entirely sure how accurate the bf percentage is that I posted, as I got it off the cheap monitor that comes with the scale that I got from Target. Do you know how accurate those scales generally are?

I'm going to use the adjusted levels that you've given and your calculator, thank you.

I would love it if I'm gaining muscle. Hopefully that's it.

I don't think I have a deficit greater than 1000 unless I am drastically underestimating my activity level. But when I log exercise, the counter tells me I never burn more than 400 cals a workout, usually more like 350.

I guess I'll see how the scale looks later in the week. It's not really ttotm, and I rarely see significant weight increases because of that anyway. Hopefully this is just water retention.

I'm a salty/vinegary food addict (not the healthiest thing in the world, I know), so one of my very favorite snacks is pickles! I eat them like crazy. One large dill pickles is only 17 calories! 6 sweet baby gherkin pickles are only 80 calories. Also, spicy pickled cauliflower is incredible and equally low in calories. Pickled beets are good, too, even though they're a bit higher, calorie-wise.

I also love to snack on string cheese, Dannon Light and Fit yogurts, and 100-calorie popcorn packs with Cajun seasoning added to make it spicy.

I would imagine you'd be safe with lightly active; I was losing weight like crazy at the lightly active calorie level when I had about the same activity level as you're describing (I'm a student too, so I spend the majority of my time sitting).

I'm eating at sedentary right now since I'm in the midst of exams (haven't been to the gym in three weeks, literally spend all day sitting and working except for minimal walking to get where I need to go) and I'm still losing about a pound a week, so I think sedentary would be way too low for you. Try lightly active, and if you aren't losing or you end up losing too fast, you can always adjust.

Black beans are one of my go-to dishes when I want something very filling- I can throw together 1/2 cup beans, a tortilla and some salsa and have a very filling burrito for around 250 cals. Very good for lunch or dinner.
