Vegetarian Wow... and some questions. Mar 01 2008

I went all vegetarian pretty much overnight, and I'm slowing working at becoming vegan. Being a poor college student means you can't be too picky.

My extended family (who all live in the mountains, go hunting on a regular basis, etc...) have actually never been hostile or rude about my being a vegetarian. As for explaining my diet: Most people have had a pet they loved, and i normally just play on that.

Vegans can still get a lot of calcium from vegetables, and some argue they can use calcium from vegetables much easier and more efficiently than from dairy. My biggest problem was B12 and B6 consumption. You pretty much only get B12 from animal products, and it took me a long time to realize that my being dog tired all the time was from a B12 deficiency.

Thank you all for your responses, it makes me feel like i'm not just lying to myself. phord, thats a really great idea! i'll try to eat like i used to for a week, and keep track of how many calories i consume daily, average that, subtract 500, and end up at the perfect calorie place! you're a genius!

though man, i wish i could get my paws on one of those machines.

anyway, thanks all! i appreciate it.

because i am looking to lose a few...5-10 mainly. i know it's all vanity and aesthetics, but at 21, that tends to happen a lot.  I've upped my exercise and decreased my intake, and wasn't sure if i was denying myself for no reason.

i went to a beautiful all inclusive resort in Rivera Maya Mexico this past summer. After a long summer of bike rides and runs and watching my diet i was too was worried about what to eat at the resort. that was all fixed when i got there and realized they had no vegetarian food! i went from a complete fear of overeating to a fear of starving all week.

i (very literally) lived off of guacamole, salsa, refried beans every other day (cause every other day they put meat in the beans), and all the alcohol/mixed drinks i could handle (starting first thing in the morning). i thought all the alcohol would sink me, but somehow i managed to lose more weight on the trip! i doubt it would work for everyone...but i was highly amused. i thought about starting a fad diet. any diet that included all you can drink alcohol would have to be a sure fire hit ;)

i started typing a response for you, but i realized i don't really know what i'm talking about. i started a thread like this a month ago, and the advice people gave was varied...it made me think that pretty much any combination of weights, cardio, and HIIT worked...

Health & Support Calling Frequent Headache Sufferers. Oct 25 2007

dagicat: i've never noticed any food triggers. most of my headaches hit before i eat anything, but i've heard that sometimes  food allergies can trigger a headache a day or two down the line. i may have to go through the top headache causers and cut them out oneby one and see what's up. and, surprisingly, i've hated tofu and soy vehemently for most of my life. recently i've started eating it (thanks to this website and realizing my protein intake for any given day was waaay too low), so i may put that on the top of the list of foods to cut out for a while. acupuncture is interesting too. my grandmother swears she got acupuncture for a nasty headache once, and she hasn't had a headache since. i'm not sure she's not embellishing a bit, but it's worth a shot. hell, even if she is embellishing by 50% it's still a substantial improvement. and thanks for all the recommendations of stuff to dull a headache, i greatly appreciate it.

kriztina: thanks! see, i never thought it to be TMJ because when my jaw does lock shut, i can massage the muscles around it, and it releases it most of the time. i didn't know there was some manner of problem directly relating to the muscles. I'll definitely have to talk to my dentist (or my boss, i work for a dentist...) about it. thanks!

julie2385: I used to go to a masseuse, but i admit that due to my pocketbook (and it's nigh emptiness) , i never really gave her a fair go at dealingwith my headaches. i'd just go if i had a headache for days and days and couldn't last another minute. She often could lessen them, but she was never able to make them go away...but that's my own fault for being a cheap (and poor) college student. I may have to give it another go, however. It would definitely be worth the money if it worked.

lgutu: just today i started a chart keeping track of everything i do, and how my headaches flutuate throughout the day, so we'll see what that wields. i also think you may have something on hunger triggering them occasionally...the problem is i'm always hungry, despite eating my 1500 cal a day...so it comes down to not having a headache or cheating on my diet, i guess. Thanks for the information on migraine medication, come my next break from studying i'll have to go on a google spree.

callmekrystie: my mother is gluten intolerant...and i've been procrastinating a break from wheat for years now. being vegetarian, i'm not sure if i really can give up wheat (i know it's technically possible, but it would make my eating situation so inconvenient...) i may have to finally give it a shot, though. it's kinda weird, but i hope that isn't the source of my headaches...i'm of Swedish/German descent, so my fingers are crossed. thanks for mentioning it and making me stop the procrastination though. :)

aaltizer: i actually am anemic, and i've been taking a womens multiple that claims to have 100% o my daily required iron...though who knows. i'll try to incorporate more iron rich foods into my diet one week and see if that changes anything. Thanks!

polythelenepam: my headaches are the exact same way: either there and extremely prevalent, or a dull pain in the front of the head. it's soo annoying.

duzzie: i totally feel that. it seems like anything will or won't trigger them, and from day to day the things that alleviate them might make them worse...

jdbcmt: I don't think i have high blood pressure...i had it checked less than a year ago and the doctor said it was perfect. I also don't do artificial sweeteners almost at all...my mother thought them to be the devil, so i just never got into the habit of using them, and i never developed the taste for them. I haven't done a major log of what's going on in my life, or kept track of my headaches on paper, so that may be in order. i (strangely) never really thought to do that, thanks for the suggestion.

spoiled_candy i rarely eat anything with MSG, i buy almost all of my food from a health food coop, and as such don't even have the temptation of MSG'd chips and the like. I do have jaw problems, however. if i chew bubble gum or talk/sing/yell too much, my jaw locks mostly shut (which is very inconvenient at concerts or in the middle of fights), so i'll have to talk to my dentist next time i'm in.

cass877 Yeah, I've heard of OTC pain medication making headaches worse/occur more frequently. and I've become immune to almost every mediation available OTC. the only thing that touches them these days is 4-8 Excedrin's, and i just feel bad doing that to my liver, so it only happens in extenuating circumstances. i don't do caffeine very often either, maybe twice a week...blasted seemingly pointless headaches.

Motivation Physical Pile to remind yourself of the weight lost....anyone? Oct 15 2007
22:03 (UTC)
23

I've hear about people using stacks of magazines...though piles of magazines are kind of annoying to have around.

this doesn't help you visualize the weight, but my friends mother started making a paperclip chain, and for every pound she lost she added a paper clip to it. she hung it in her dining room as a reminder.

Sorry id don't have any better ideas. good luck!

Vegetarian Odd Topic - Binging and Vegetarianism Oct 15 2007
05:22 (UTC)
14

I've been a veg for over five years, and the only times i stray is when I'm in a foreign country (i needed to try just one bite of an authentic Irish shepherds pie, even if i ended up not really liking it), or when i'm drunk... :)

I can count the number of times i've cheated on vegetarianism one my fingers, easily. but it seems if there's pepperoni around and i have a few too many drinks in me, i just have to have a slice. never very much, but just enough to taste it. I can't stand the texture of meat anymore, so that's probably why i only slip up when i'm in no state to really determine the texture.

Anyway, yes, i feel this binging. I don't do meat...but after eating nothing but organic foods and fresh veggies and fruit and brown rice and etc...i go out and drink cheap alcohol, and completely undo all the good i did for my body that day.

The only meat I've ever craved sober was a corn dog...mmm, nothing like third rate compressed animal bits wrapped in GM third rate corn meal...

Motivation am i doing something wrong? Oct 14 2007
18:01 (UTC)

I'm no expert, but here's as much as i know:
No matter how much you work out and how great you eat, you won't lose any weight if you're not calorie deficient. keep track of everything you eat and how much you work out to see if that's the underlying problem. but also: you shouldn't be more than 1000 deficient for a day, and women should eat at least 1200 calories a day. The CC BMR tool is extremely helpful here.
If i remember correctly, a pound equals about 3500 calories. so you need eat that many more than you burn to gain a pound, and you need a deficit of that much (over multiple days) to lose a pound.

The other thing is muscle does weigh more than fat, and if you're developing muscle, chances are good may gain weight. the upside for this is that muscle burns more calories than fat, and is also more compact - so hypothetically if you're developing muscle you should notice that some parts of you are getting leaner.

Hoping that's of some help and that i didn't reiterate that which you already know. good luck!

The Lounge Favorite Movie(s) That Are NOT Well Known Oct 14 2007
02:30 (UTC)

I'm not a movie person, I'm generally more of a book person. This said, there is one movie i always talk about that practically no one else has seen: The Salton Sea. I'm not sure if it's just because it's older than my generation, and maybe everyone else knows it...

Anyway, that's pretty much the only "unknown" movie that i know of. Another one i really like that is definitely older than my generation is "the passenger". I'm pretty sure it's a well known movie, however.

Foods Super low calorie snacks?? Oct 13 2007
04:34 (UTC)
31

what i usually do when i want a low calorie snack is buy some puffed cereal. You can buy them at any health-food store and most large grocery stores. the ones i always buy are by Arrowhead Mills, and i love their puffed wheat, kamut, and corn. they're crunchy and carby (i love carbs), and 50 calories for a cup. a little over your limit, but a half cup is within the the limit. the other awesome thing is a bag is really quite cheap. it also feels more like a Friday night snack kind of food than celery (or any veggies...)

The only puffed grain cereal i don't recommend if millet...it's too chewy unless you add milk, and then that totally throws your calorie limit.

good luck :)

Weight Loss "You're Getting Too Skinny!!!!" Sarcastic Comments Oct 11 2007

Yeah, it seems all to common to tear down someone when they're doing amazing. And you are! I'm probably half as nice as you, or less, but I'd blast them with some comment about their weight. "You're getting too skinny" "Well you're getting too...well, let's just say that extra dough nut this morning wasn't a wise decision"

Keep up the amazing work!

Health & Support What to Eat When Sick? Oct 06 2007

Vegetarian What do ya do with TOFU?? Oct 04 2007
05:32 (UTC)
if you like Indian food...
i buy Masala sauce from my local health food coop, it runs about $3.5 a jar and is relatively low in calories and is junk free. Then i just sauté up some tofu with various veggies (asparagus, broccoli, tomatoes, onions and red peppers are my favorites), and after the tofu and veggies are cooked, smother them in masala sauce (right in the skillet). Once everything is warm, i serve it over basmatti rice...it's soo delicious. I'm a pretty abysmal cook, and this is a breeze. and if you have a rice cooker it's easier still.
Health & Support Muscle soreness tips/tricks? Oct 03 2007

I have taken pretty much all of you up on your advice. Hot showers, cold showers, slow jogs, walks, and a bit of weight training later and my legs don't hurt so bad...except for if i make any quick and sudden movements, then it feels like one muscle group in my legs is about to snap...so i just try to skip and quick and sudden movements. And..I've been getting my Vitamin C via apples and my Potassium via bananas, and no new muscle soreness has occurred. thank you all kindly. everyone on here is so helpful!

Good luck. I live in the greater Pittsburgh area, but don't think i can offer you much advice. Being an old steal town, the staples around the burgh are to be expected: fried, deep fried, and/or meat and potatoes.

But as for bringing stuff over the border, you should be able to bring sealed packages, shouldn't you? Maybe you could at least bring some good salad dressing. Then, if you have to eat at a place like McDonalds, you could ask for a plain salad and add your own dressing, which you k now will be tasty and have little junk in it...
